Wallace is a career back-up, and has been successful as one. I think we could get more from trading him than Colt, plus his salary is way too high.

I don't understand this thought process...

Why would a team be more willing to trade for Wallace or McCoy?

NO ONE is going to trade for either of them to be a starter..

So if someone is going to trade for one of them, wouldn't it be the cheaper one, that has more potential?

If any team in WIN NOW mode, thinks trading for Seneca Wallace is a good idea...

Kafka hurt his hand.. think he is out 3-4 weeks..

Mike Vick hurt his hand, but he is okay.

I think they put Nick Foles as number 2 now.

If I'm the coaches and executives who are now playing to save their jobs with the new owner, I'm updating my résumé.

With what? 4-12, 5-11, 5-11, and 4-12? With a 28 or 29 y.o. rookie QB? Two 2nd round that hadn't played the season before being drafted because of suspensions?

I think I'd try leaving that crap off my résumé and hope that whoever was reading it hadn't known anything about my tenure in the Browns front office or coaching staff.

Exactly how does that make the case that they would want Wallace over McCoy? When the Browns had their starter (namely McCoy) go down last year, Wallace took over and was 0-3.

I'm reasonably sure that doesn't qualify him for the qualifier as being a 'win now mode' QB acquisition.

I think Nick Foles would have been the backup QB (to Vick) anyway with a future as the Eagles starting QB.

Why do all the columnist keep using Weeden's minor league career as some sort of notch of accomplishment. He played 4 years in the minors and never left single A ball. So basically he failed. If e succeed even a lil bit, that would be something.

My biggest concern when it comes to Weeden is his footwork and more importantly his arrogance. Im a firm believer that in professional sports an ego and confidence is a major plus. But I thnk weeden needs to fill lucky to be in the situation he's in. No denial he has an arm.... But it takes so much more then a good arm to be a qb in the NFL... Just ask Jeff George.

At ok St. He had better receivers then he does now. The accomplishments and achievements that ppl give him credit for... I just don't see. Hopefully his "maturity" which is the reason why I thnk that everyone has given him a pass for or very seldom mention his negatives... Will give him some tools to learn n progress enough to play. But by all means... Don't annoit the the kid just to justify draft pick

Which i think is the case here in Cleveland.

Compare all the rookie qb's first preseason games... Luck, RG3, even Tannehill. Weeden definitely had the worst and looked lost the most.

Very often you learn more by failing, then picking yourself up and succeeding that you ever would by never having experienced failure.

The only thing I believe it accomplishes is that the whole shock of being a rookie and facing the pro fan base and media have already been experienced by him. In that regard he would handle that end of it well and not be so distracted by it.

Otherwise I don't see it as having any real bearing.

I guess you need to make up your mind whether it's a major plus, or if it bothers you.... I watched the entire game and DVR'd the game and broke down his footwork. While it wasn't text book, I didn't see any major footwork issues from a rookie QB in his first pre-season NFL game.

I guess if you expected to see a finished product in his first pre-season game, you have every right to be disapointed.

I watched every highlight reel of Blackmons and it seemed almost every clip he was hit right in the hands and in stride. Maybe you should look at those and see if you can find any "acribatic catches" he had to make because of the QB?

But yeah, timing between the QB and his WR's are key. I really didn't expect that to happen in just a few weeks of training camp.

After the first pre-season game, at this point it sure looks that way. I really tried to tell people that when you're starting four or five rookies that things aren't going to develop quickly and progress won't be as fast as some expect.

So I'm not surprised nor do I think the sky is falling at this point. Talk to me after he's had 20 starts.

That's not what i said. I've actually been one of the ones that's been saying we not gona find out til after the season starts....to see what we have in Weeden all along. I also believe he is not our answer at QB. Said that since day one.

I do like a certain cockyness. Self confidence is a huge plus in sports. Too much confidence and unearned confidence makes ppl not work as hard or promotes mistakes.

um.. He's been named starter after 1 week of practice. And has had essentially had that position since he came in the door. There was no qb competition in camp.

I'm not one of the ones on this board with that mindset. 20 starts??? I hope it don't take u that long to realize what we have. Colt didn't even get 20 starts... And currently he looks much better in the system. Which ismwhy I've been saying let's not start Weeden from the get go... IF HE IS NOT READY. Let him mature some in the system... Then give him playing time. I just hope H&H don't start him just to make themselves look good. I'd rather him sit n grow and not get ruined, cuz I do think he has some potential. Unfortunately there is limited time to see his potential. Which is main reason I was against the pick in the beginning.

I can't say that I disagree with much of this at all.

Maybe Weeden will develop and prove me wrong, but he'll have to take the Browns to the playoffs to get it. Anything else is a failure. Dalton did it in Cincy in year #1. Mark Sanchez did it in year #1. Tebow virtually did it in his first year.

Anyone willing to accept anything less is wiling to accept failure. Maybe he'll be great. Maybe he'll develop into a fine QB in year #2 or #3. With his age, that's too long to wait.

So in one breath you say we have to wait and see what we have and in the other you state you already know what we have and he is not the answer?

Make up your mind will ya!?

Well we obviously see things differently. I have seen Weeden appear calm and confident. Not cocky or arrogant as you see to feel in any way.

If you have press confrences or quotes to indicate he is somehow cocky or arrogant, I'd sure like to see them.

Quote:

That's what he was drafted to be. The Cleveland Browns starting QB. After breaking down film on Colt this FO determined they did not wish to move forward with Colt as our starter and drafted Weeden to take over that role.

You say he was annointed. I say he got the position due to default. Obviously the FO had enough evidence on film that they felt a QB competition wasn't needed. Seems everyone who has seen the two of them practice can see Weedens arm strength and overall accuracy is better. It is what it is. But that isn't "annointing" anyone.

Quote:

Sorry but you are incorrect. Colt has started 20 games with The Cleveland Browns. You might wanna Google that......

Even MH has stated that you really don't know what you have in a QB until he's started a full season. So you think one training camp and a few starts tells the tale? You might wish to look at Peyton Mannings first 6 games or so before you continue with that line of thought. Or Elways.....

Quote:

And currently he looks much better in the system. Which ismwhy I've been saying let's not start Weeden from the get go... IF HE IS NOT READY. Let him mature some in the system...

Really? You mean a guy who has been in this system for over a year now looks more comfortable than someone who has only been in this system a few weeks? Well color me shocked!

This FO has determined Colt doesn't have the skill set to be the starting QB. Considering that, each game you start Colt is yet another week that Weeden isn't getting used to playing in the system. They have decided they aren't going to continue starting games with a QB that is not the future.

Quote:

I just hope H&H don't start him just to make themselves look good. I'd rather him sit n grow and not get ruined, cuz I do think he has some potential. Unfortunately there is limited time to see his potential. Which is main reason I was against the pick in the beginning.

You were against picking him because you obviously feel he isn;t the answer and from your posts you obviously feel Colt deserved more time.

Well Colt had his 20 starts and I'd say Weeden will get his. Now once Weeden has his 20 starts as Colt did, we can actually compare the performance of the two. Until then, there really is no comparison. And to say someone who has been in this system for over a year is more comfortable in that system than someone who has only been here for a few weeks is one of the most obvious reaches I have ever seen to try to make your point.

Would anyone in their right mind expect someone who has only bee n here a few weeks to know the playbook and system as well as someone who has been in that same system for over a year?

Come on man!

To me he'll have to develop and play better over the course of the season.

Sorry, but I don't judge one player on what every other player on the field does.

If we end up putting 27-30 points on the board and the D gives up mpre than that causing us to lose, Weeden failed?

Nah, we are starting several rookies on O at skilled position and we have no clue how many points the D will give up if our opposition actually has to start airing it out against us.

If you wish to judge the performance of the entire team on one man, be my guest. But I judge each player on what they do.........

LOL.. the Bengals made the playoffs because the Jets and Broncos lost in week 17 in games the Bengals had nothing to do with... so if the Broncos had won and the Bengals had NOT made the playoffs, even though every single thing Dalton did would have been the same, it somehow would have been less of an accomplishment?

Anything less than a Super Bowl win is a failed season.

Now that we have that out of the way, I don't agree you can hold Weeden responsible for that or to hold him to that standard without holding Joe Thomas to the exact same standard.

Good 'ol Tony, always trying to stir the pot

Why does it seem that Brandon Weeden's honeymoon is over after 15 practice plays?
Aug 15, 2012 -- 6:00am
By Tony Grossi

The 480 bridge mentality: Browns fans are so star-deprived, so win-starved, so scarred by bad football, they’ve lost all sense of perspective.

They want results instantly. They want a polished, winning, franchise quarterback delivered by Twitter, not developed over time.

Judging from the reaction I’ve heard all week – which has been reflected by the area’s equally frustrated media – Brandon Weeden’s honeymoon is over after 15 plays in his first preseason outing.

That’s how long it took for Weeden to commit two turnovers and the countdown to Matt Barkley, or the next No. 1 pick, to begin.

Astonishingly, Weeden is over the hill at age … well, 28.

“How has Weeden’s demeanor been, bouncing back from a less-than-great first game?” Pat Shurmur was asked on Tuesday by a member of the media I respect.

If looks could kill …

Clenching his tongue between his teeth, Shurmur responded, "I don't know. You guys are painting his performance as less than whatever, number one. Number two, I think he's a very resilient guy. So when he has a bad play or two, or a bad series or two, I see him bounce back extremely well."

Of the four quarterbacks taken in the first round of the April draft, Weeden’s preseason debut was comparatively dismal – 3 of 9 for 62 yards, one interception, one lost fumble and no points on the board.

One thing I’ve learned in 28 years covering the NFL is you can use preseason numbers to prove any point you want. I’ve done it. Last year, Colt McCoy completed 60.9 percent of his passes in preseason, tossed four touchdowns v. one interception and compiled a passer rating of 101.7. We all wanted to believe his magnificent practice season meant something. Alas, it did not.

Been there, done that: This is where Weeden’s experience as a five-year professional baseball prospect should serve him well.

“Numbers … numbers are deceiving,” he said. “You know, when you’re only throwing nine times, it doesn’t look too good when you’re (completing) 33 percent. That’s the only negative when you’re only playing 15 plays.

“You don’t have the chance to come in and redeem yourself and do something better the next time out. Numbers are skewed sometimes.”

For the record, Weeden wasn’t thrilled with the fumble at the Detroit 28 on his first series, where he didn’t feel backside pressure from Lions rusher Willie Young, or the forced and miscommunicated throw to Greg Little that was intercepted.

Of the fumble, he said, “That I can correct by getting the ball out just a split second sooner. That’s something you can get a feel with as the game goes on.”

And of the interception: “Saturday we came out and ran that route with Greg five or six times (after practice). There’s only limited reps in team period and 7 on 7. So you have to come out and do more, talk through it. Those are easy, easy adjustments. There’s a lot of work to be done.”

If they haven’t done so already, the Browns’ coaches better make getting Weeden ready for Sept. 9 the No. 1 priority at practice.

Developing on the run: Browns fans don’t want to hear it again because every year the team breaks in a new quarterback. But there is going to be a developmental period for Weeden.

One heretofore overlooked adjustment he’s making is verbalizing the extra-wordy plays inherent in the West Coast offense.

“Some of the wordy ones can be tongue-twisters at times,” offensive coordinator Brad Childress said. “I encourage him to practice in front of a mirror with a script and enunciate all those words.”

Weeden said at minicamp he’d send his wife pictures of the play sheet and then have her test him on the verbiage. Now he’s taken to just blurting plays out loud when alone.

He said Shurmur’s plays are “a lot longer … a lot longer (than those at Oklahoma State). And I didn’t have to say them. In college, we signaled everything because we played so fast.”

Weeden also is learning not to dismiss field goals so casually and throw recklessly in the end zone. At OSU, he took more chances because he knew he’d be reloading again on fourth down.

“You rarely want to sit on that ability,” Childress said. “A lot of time, discretion is the better part of valor of trying to stick it through the eye of the needle. But we want him to be aggressive, want him to keep shooting. Whether it was the fumble or the interception, you want him to keep shooting where he’s supposed to be shooting. We won’t dissuade him from that, not right now.”

Not when he’s getting only 15 plays. Thursday in Green Bay, he should receive at least double that amount in what Shurmur is framing as the team’s premature dress rehearsal for the season.

Just remember, there still will be 24 days, 14 practices and two mop-up exhibition games before the real thing starts. And then, too, will start another phase of Weeden’s education.

And let me tell you, it was all Dalton and Sanchez that did it in year one. It had nothing to do with their offensive supporting cast or their defenses.

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."

I disagree. Anything less than a Super Bowl win is a disappointing season but you need to consider where we are coming from as a team. Right now winning a Super Bowl would not just be a successful season but a miraculous one. Yes, our ultimate goal is to win a Super Bowl. But I would consider this a successful season if we make strides that get us closer to the Super Bowl.

You know I have never seen so much whining, crying and ledge jumping after one freaking preseason game. Weeden was composed and he made a few mistakes but that is part of the process.

I was more impressed with what Weeden did than what I saw from Tannehill, RG3 and Wilson. Tannehill and Wilson were going against backups and backups to backups and RG3 was throwing to guys with no defender in the same area code. The best throw RG3 made was an incompletion lol.

I was glad the Lions were bringing it. That is how you get ready for week 1. You don't gain anything by playing pitch and catch in open space. OOO and Weeden whether you like him or not made it to the NFL by being the guy that doesn't let a poor start get to him. He didnt get to finish so lets withhold judgement for a few more weeks before we break out the rail, tar and feathers.

I don't believe that Grossi is really stirring the pot. He's actually defending Weeden, which is a seemingly departure from his M.O.

As for the "honeymoon being over" yeah, it's an overreaction by the fans, but that's the case for every QB who has ever walked on the field. Luck is to be enshrined into the Hall Of Fame next weekend after his performance, and Weeden is ready for the scrap heep.

Having said that, there is going to be a certain amount of greater truth and substantiation to evaluations of Weeden because of how he was sold to the fanbase. Weeden was touted as being a "ready now" QB by the organization. They've put out the word that his baseball past makes him ready for the NFL (which is absolute crock of crap) and because they've not even bothered with a real competition, the job has been handed to him indicating their belief that he's ready to go right out of the gate.

Now I would reiterate something I said when we drafted him (no, not that I think he's a poor gamble ) which is that anointing him the starter just because of his age is LUDICROUS. You can't treat him any differently than any other rookie just because he's attempting to do something at his age that has never been done before. If he's ready to start, you start him, but if he's not, you don't. He's a rookie coming from a backyard offense, nothing more. There will be growing pains, as there are with every rookie. The big problem is that IMHO Holmgren and Co. have not done anyone any favors by handing him the keys to the franchise in the manner they have. All that has done is open him up for more pressures, stress, and criticism.

Is the honeymoon over for Weeden? Somewhat, yes, and you can thank the head honchos for laying the groundwork.

You MUST be new here.

I agree with your basic premise, however. Weeden's performance was about what I expected: some good, some bad but, generally, OK. That game was, hopefully, the low-water mark for our ones and we build from there. That, IMO, is the goal. If we see a little more polish and efficiency on offense against the Pack, then that will be a good sign that we're on the right track.

Other than the thinly veiled shot at Colt, I think that was one of the more level Grossi articles I've read in years.

I'm excited for the next game, it's obvious Little is hungry to improve his performance, Weeden has to know about the press but he strike me as the kind of guy who treats it like "out of sight, out of mind." of course this assertion is assumptive. I think he will look much better with a full half of football. He will have some time to get into the game, and I think we're all hoping that he will show us more of why the team has put their faith in him.

We want more than one pretty pass to Travis Benjamin, but I think we will get it.

Maybe Grossi talked to Paco and Anarchy before he wrote that?

odd... he looked like a deer in headlights to me. rewatch the game and you will see that he looked lost/overwhelmed.

I am sure that he will get better as time goes and the jitters will subside.

I don't see that as stirring the pot or a negative article.

Just read the boards for the public's opinion....many are writing him off...Grossi is right on point.

I would just have to say that's a matter of perception. I DVR'd the game and watched Weedens playing time over several times.

From my obsevations I did sense an underlying tone of frustration which I would have expected from his performance. But during his playing time on the field I didn't see any "deer in the headlights look" that you seem to indicate that you saw.

And as what I think was a further indication of this, is as soon as he was removed from the game, on the sidelines I saw him very cool, calm and collected going over things with the QB coach.

I didn't see the whole "jitters thing" either. I'm not saying which one of us is right or wrong. But what I will say is different people can look at the exact same thing and take away from it very different perceptions of what they did and didn't see.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I didn't see any great jitter either.

I do think that the Lions threw some stuff in there that we never planned on seeing ..... such as running the "wide 9".

The DE spreading wide always gives us issues. It turns into a mental game for the o-line to decide to block the DE or block the possible blitz by the LB.

Weeden IMO didn't look jittery though. He looked calm to me.

I did watch it. I didn't see it no more than Peyton,Brady or Rodgers showed in there first preseason game. They all looked bad!!!!!
Matter of fact Brady looked like he was staring down receivers. Manning looked like he was watching the rush more than Downfield and Rodgers looked like he never played before.
So.....now you tell me about these guys upcoming seasons with what they did?
Come on guys..really.....

Remember in McCoy's rookie year, where he was supposedly on the verge of being cut following the 2nd pre-season game ........?

People love hyperbole.
