Perhaps, if you were talking about a talent like Luck, it might be ludicrous, but Weeden is not Luck, he's not mobile, he's not young, and he's probably not the future of the franchise.

What do you define as future? Is he going to be starting here 10 years? Who knows, heck if he starts for 6 years he's doing better than any other QB we've had since 99. He's only going to be 29. Tom Brady is 35, and has said he wants to play into his 40s, Weeden technically has left Football milage at 29 than Brady did... Oh and they are both Statues.

Quote:

If he turns out to be, great, then trade someone, but ignoring the age and lack of mobility issues is basically going ostrich on the situation.

Trade someone? What does that even mean? No one is ignoring his Age/Mobility, but you seem to be doing the opposite of it and beating the fact into the ground.

Quote:

This is a radically unique circumstance which may call for a radical approach. Picking him was a risk, having a back-up plan isn't completely ridiculous.

Drafting someone in the top 5 is not a "backup plan" SD didn't draft Eli/Rivers as a backup plan "in case" Drew Brees failed, they thought he had already failed, they were drafting his replacement.

Quote:

Now, please don't misunderstand, while I wasn't crazy about the pick, I didn't hate it, and I do believe he has the tools to be VERY good. However, I seriously wonder, right now, given our line, his inability to maneuver and our schedule against good defenses, if he'll make it past week 6 without ending up on IR.

Do you think we're going to be running a lot of 7 step drops where he has to wait? Don't you think getting Richardson was kind of the plan?

Quote:

And BTW, it's simply a hypothetical question, no need to get your panties in a wad just because I asked it. You don't want to discuss because it's "too early", simply bow out.

So if someone disagrees with you, you'd prefer they don't reply at all? Sounds boring...

I wasn't calling you out, I was asking the question. I don't care if you defend Colt or Weeden, both, neither, that's not the issue. I'm simply wondering if you take advantage of a high draft pick to take another QB should the opportunity to pick #1 comes along. It doesn't happen very often. It's an interesting question, specifically because of the situation we're in. This is not about T-Rich or Hardesty or anyone else. It's not about whether Weeden played baseball or badminton. It's about an older QB with limited mobility on a historically crappy team with an incredibly difficult schedule against some really good defenses and the very real possibility that we could pick high in the draft.

I understand the points you're making regarding Weeden, even agree with some of them. It's simply an interesting discussion. So you see, I'm not upset, I just don't understand why you're expending so much time arguing a point you see as fantastical or ludicrous.

I really don't care if you or he agree or disagree with me. I enjoy reading the different takes on the issue. My point was that if he found the discussion ludicrous because it was too early to tell, there was no need to participate. Yet, oddly enough, even though it's too early to tell and ludicrous to discuss, volumes were written on why it would be a bad idea. I think that's a little funny actually. But the reality is, I do enjoy the different takes and reasoning as to why or why we shouldn't consider picking another QB, should we end up with the #1 pick.

This in itself actually poses an interesting question; if our record is so bad as to put us in the number one slot, what will that say about our QB play, team play in general, system and coaching? I mean, many here have low expectations including myself, but is it unreasonable to expect at least a .500 record simply because we do now have a QB with a strong arm and a couple play makers on offense? Can we reasonably expect a Dalton-like year and if we don't get it, is there something wrong with the QB? The team? The FO, coaching staff or system? Will we be able to say at the end of the year, should we end up with a 2, 3, or 4 win season, that the season was a success and everybody did their job well?

That's his point, we don't know until we see it.

Cam Newton wowed everyone last year (fell a bit down the stretch) and the Panthers went 6-10, and were probably close to 8-8 or even 4-12...

If they had the #1 pick last year, would they have looked for a new QB? Of Course not...

It's all in context.

Absolutely, but that's why it was posted as a "what if".

Cam Newton is a poor example, he's a young, physical specimen, with all the tools, who is mobile and has many years in from of him. And, they didn't pick #1.

So you're saying if Cam were hypothetically 29, couldn't run well and wen't 2-14 and picked #1 in the draft? Then yes, I think they may have taken Luck.

I would want to stay in the top 5-7 if we trade down and I would want a RG3/Redskins type of trade to do it. That being said passing on Barkley would be tough.

As long as Heckerts here, there is no way we take a QB before round 4 next year, how long has he stuck by Hardesty?

Even if we get a clean slate in the FO/Coaches (I doubt it but whatevs) I would think whoever comes in would enjoy having a strong armed QB at their disposal..

That depends a lot on what other strengths he shows as well. Anderson had a strong arm too and almost made the playoffs.

So you're saying Weeden would make a good backup to a high first rounder?

He has not played one down in a NFL game, and already we are speculating about the future....

Improve from what? to what?

There is a big difference between going out and getting Peyton Manning and Ryan Leaf, your understanding of the situation after the first year would be completely different.

No I'm saying people like to keep around strong armed QBs. As in reference to a FO/Coaching change here...

But continue having fun turning everything I say around...

If weeden is the man and we're picking #1 something is seriously wrong with this team... with that said, if we are going to stick with weeden then you auction off the #1 pick for 3 #1's (at least). Or you take Barkley and auction off Weeden...

JC...

This board loves to perpetuate myths and I see another starting ... "Our OL isn't very good".

GMAFB

Maybe we should just draft a first round guy for all 5 positions ... Then a first round guy for QB, RB, FB, WR1, WR2 and then let's move to D and do the same.

We should have the team built in 22 years. LOL...

1st question - Do we take a Qb? If Weeden looks decent or better then no. We can trade that pick for multiple other picks. If Weeden looks like crap then yes you take a QB.

2nd question - What Qb do we draft? Definitely not Barkley. Depending on which underclassmen come out Barkley could wind up being the 3rd, 4th or even 5th Qb taken. That is just based on talent. Additionally Barkley has said he doesn't like playing in the cold. Not a quality that you look for when picking a Qb for the Cleveland Browns.

If Weeden shows improvement I do not see how we have the #1 pick in the draft. McCoy and Wallace led us to #4. If our QB position is improved, we are not picking #1.

My answer: YES!

Related issues:

If that happens, is Heckert gone?

Shurmur?

I'm assuming Holmgren is gone regardless of record.

What if Heckert stays but Shurmur goes?

Will Haslam insist we take the #1 QB to put his team on the map?

Thoughts?

On Barkley,, if it's clear that Weeden isn't the answer, by that I mean, at some point during the season we determine that McCoy is the better fit and McCoy still doesn't light it up, I guess you have to look at any option to get "the guy".

As for Heckert or Shurmur,, your guess is as good as mine. I don't know how Haslam thinks. He runs a very successful business and he doesn't appear to do it by firing people without good, sound reasoning.

I assume he'll use that same type of judgement with the Browns. How that works out,,,, I just don't know.

And I wouldn't be so quick to say that Holmgren is gone no matter what.

I actually suspect that Holmgren works out the balance of his contract and then retires. I'm betting Haslam doesn't want to be the one that fires a legend and a sure HOFer. I suppose Holmgren could retire and that might be Haslams way out.. dunno.

I missed the reason for the huge firestorm that it seems like Youngstown created. I have read a ton of nicknames for players that aren't flattering. I wonder why so many people allow those to pass. Are some of the same people who are upset now guilty of doing the same thing?

Yes after calling out things like Hatfields, Wheathin, and so many we've seen on a regualr basis even within our own team, I do find it odd that all of a sudden someone gets called out on some QB from USC.

When our fan base who supports Weeden and our own players get dissed, it's a non-issue. Now all of a sudden it is because of some college qB?

Hmmmmm........

Wow, this has to be the earliest that we've had someone calling for our QBs head and a new one to be drafted.

C'mon guys...we haven;t even played the first game. Everyone knows we don't start doing new mocks til...what....late October.

I agree... I guess it depends on "improves from where to where"... I mean if he starts off horrible and only looks real bad at the end of the season, then maybe... but when I consider what a top 5 pick could be worth, either in trading back for other picks or for picking up that defensive stud impact player that we desperately need, Weeden would have to look awful bad for me to think about taking another QB.

Now, let's start the season.

I think the question is if Weeden does NOT play well...

I just think it's not a question that can even be hypothetically posed, because there are so many things that could happen..

This is the point I find most interesting, because if the opposite is true, and we find ourselves drafting 1 or 2, what will that say about his performance. Weeden needs to play well enough for that not to happen. It sort of falls on his shoulders to make certain we're not drafting at the top of the draft. Ironically, even Holmgren doesn't believe we'll do very well.

And if everyone is fired there will be no one tied to Weeden. If we suck bad enough to draft #1 overall and there is a slam dunk franchise QB available (not saying there is one) we have to take that player0.

For example, if Luck stayed in school for his senior season and we ended up with the #1 pick, would you take him? I say yes.

No doubt. I guess the itch I'm feeling is that I don't want to be hogtied to a QB pick simply because we happened to grab this projected 2nd rounder in the 1st round instead. He is certainly no Luck. If we end up with a record that gives us the opportunity to pick 1st and grab a franchise guy, I want to take him.

Rome does that,, he ticks me off for it, so do the folks on here..
