I think it's natural that people want to know what happened and hear the story and feel for the people involved. They don't necessarily want all the crap that the networks spew, but they don't have a choice because they ALL do it.
I haven't been tuned to any news or news sites all day because I am truly afraid of what I will see on there.

You are right of course but what I should have said is that nobody needs to see these images . A lot of lives ended today not just the ones struck by a bullet . There are people who woke up this morning who have had the last night of peace that they will ever have . The horror that awaits these parents are unimaginable . The only thing that can rival the feeling of unconditional love is that of the feeling of pain of losing the object of that love.

I can't watch this one. I'm not ashamed to say that this one is hitting me really hard even though I don't know anybody in CT and have only ever passed through it a couple times. I don't like to watch or even think about kids suffering... I just have this horrible mental image of the school in my head and I can't get it out. I have been on the verge of tears all afternoon and the only thing I know about the incident is what I've read in here.

I know what you mean. All day I've had the imagine in my head of my elementary school when I was a kid. I think about how innocent we were, how naive we were. Something like this happening never crossed our minds and I'm sure it didn't cross theirs either.
Even the kids who survived this, their lives have changed forever.
It's really really sad.

I know, I'm so sad, I'm going to go out and do something outside. I'm home today and able to watch all of it, and I can't stand it. I picture all those people getting their kids ready for school this morning, hugging and kissing them goodbye without the slightest thought that this would be the last time they would hold or see their little child. It's unbearable to think about.
I'll just pray for them, that's all I can do.

The only thing that can be any kind of "good" to come out of this might be that maybe this can lead to a good discussion of what can be done to prevent these kinds of crazy things. I'm not sure such a thing exists, but we have to try.

My wife and I split who drops her off but whether it's in the house in the morning or at the school, I get a kiss on the cheek and I say "Have a good day Pumpkin." and she replies, "You too Daddy".... I just don't understand this.
This isn't a high school, "These kids were bullying me!" thing. These were 20 and 24 year olds, going in to kill 6 year olds.
Absolutely sickening.

The fact that he killed his mother who was a teacher there probably tells us this wasn't a random go kill a bunch of young kids type thing. If she had taught high schoolers it would have been that age person killed. He went where she worked for a reason, they were just the unfortunate group that she taught.

Days like this where I'm glad there are people tougher than me that have to deal with this situation. I mean the first responders. The sights in that place are going to forever be burned into their minds. Seeing dead bodies on a somewhat regular basis may be one thing, but little kids? I just couldn't do it.
I couldn't imagine having to break that news to parents who had children that did not walk out of that building.
A lot of people are going into arguments over gun laws and all that. You can make your arguments. I'll stick with the quote from the Dark Knight movie. Some people just want to watch the world burn.

Incidences like this are going to ultimately catch up to gun owners and much greater restrictions will be made..... I'm not advocating it but its inevitable. But that is an argument for another day.

I'm still hoping that the American public will actually try and look at the real problems, which are not inanimate objects. The politicians will try to take the easy way out, and Obama couldn't help himself by alluding to it today, even in his condolence speech. We need to make them look at the harder and more difficult issue, which is the real problem. I mentioned it just a couple of days ago in a thread in this forum...this country does an absolutely horrible job in dealing with mental illness.
As you said, it's a conversation for another day, but it's already being brought up here and in the media.

If I heard right on the radio, this kid's father was found dead in New Jersey, where the kid lived ...... and his mother worked at the school, and she was killed there as it was her classroom that this kid shot up before killing a bunch of kids, and then himself. I have no idea what possesses such a person. None at all. This was evil on full display. 20 little kids with their lives in front of them, gone, just like that. 26 people in total killed by this lunatic. My heart breaks for the families of these children and the other victims. If there is anyplace you would, and should, expect children to be safe, that would be at school. (especially elementary school) I cannot imagine getting a phone call saying that your 5 year old child has been shot to death at school. My God ...... could there be anything worse than that?

OK, just heard on TV that the father is not dead.
What a screwed up situation all over the place.

Well, there has been tons of bad info over the course of the day.. First it was a 20 year old, then it was a 24 year old, then it was back a 20 year old and that his Brother was dead then no wait, it was his father, then no wait, the father isn't dead but the mom was a teacher.. Yikes
Better to just let it settle down. The facts will come out.. One thing that is a fact, too damn many little kids got killed today and for no damn good reason at all.
God bless that children that died and those that have to live with the aftermath.

America will do as we always do. We all say they should do something, no one does anything and in a few months this is all forgotten.
I am very pro gun. I enjoy hunting and shooting but honestly, I dont need an assault rifle to go deer hunting. i dont need my 9 mm Beretta with a 15 round clip to defend myself.
No one should be allowed to possess anything with a higher firing capacity than 6 rounds. Its not the fix for everything but we gotta draw the line somewhere. Its amazing at the firepower that is possessed by some really dumb people.
You take the average headcase can go to the flea market buy an AR 15 watch a youtube video and turn it into fully automatic all within a matter of minutes. it is seriously disturbing when you think about it.

Jules:
I was feeling it right along with you- the crushing sadness, the feeling of helplessness. Events such as these poison the souls of us all. It's not what The Father wishes for us.
I could only handle about an hour of the incessant coverage before I could feel my insides darkening. I did the only thing I could think of- I pulled out my cello, closed my eyes, and played Bach... every piece of his that I'd ever committed to memory.
About an hour and a half later, it dawned upon me why I felt better:
The same species that gave us such unspeakable ugliness, also gave us people who contributed incredible examples of beauty and purity. The realization of that dichotmy gave me back some sense of balance. Without my music, I'm not sure how deeply into that dark place I might have gone today.
I'm sharing this because I think your instincts and mine were very similar today. The only way to fight back against allowing the darkness to infect us, is to take on something positive for ourselves. If we don't, we risk being dragged down by these horrors... and becoming secondary victims ourselves.
We can't let that happen. We cannot allow the least among us to keep us from wanting the best for us. I hope you found something to do that nourished and nurtured your soul. Something that would counteract the vileness that this day brought.
I hope we all find for ourselves that one thing that soothes what this man has hurt in us. I love being part of this community, and want each of us to survive this well.
Bless you Jules... and bless all of you tonight, Clem

I really hoped I'd never have to say this, but I have to ask my son's elementary school what their plan is for these situations. I mean, elementary school!
What can be done to stop these kinds of things from happening? My Lord.
I'd instruct my kids to find the closest window and get the heck out of the building. I don't care what the teachers are telling them to do. Closing doors and hiding is insane.
Portland, In listening to the shooting in your area and a couple hours of the disaster today-some the teachers at the school locked their classroom doors and covered the windows and then got the kids away from the doors in a corner and tried to read to keep the kids calm. Some of the smaller stores at the mall locked their store doors and then hid in the store-even a couple locking themselves in bathrooms inside a locked store. These are probably better methods than having a bunch of people running around an active scene.

I have concluded that anytime an issue comes up to the ballot regarding funding for the detection, counseling and treatment of mental illnesses I will vote FOR the funding. It seems to me that the small increase in my taxes is well worth the lives of of these young children.
As a parent, I cannot fathom the anguish that these families are going thru. Yesterday was a good day for me since my daughter DancinDawg finally came home to me after spending a semester in Italy. I haven't seen her since August. I cannot comprehend the idea of never seeing her again.
My condolences to the families affected in CT

As long as we continue to equate and accept gun violence as being the price we pay for freedom, we will continue to have terrible days like yesterday. Our second amendment right to keep and bear arms just cost 27 innocent people their inalienable right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. I now reject the premise that freedom equates to the right to bear arms. Far more people have had their lives forever changed as a result of the death of a loved one. They too have had their rights violated in a far more personal manner. Yet they have few to speak for them, no all powerful national organization, no corporate funding from suppliers, only other Americans, similarly appalled by the blood of babies that has been splattered on our national face, and drips at the feet of our values.
We need to rethink how we approach the design, availability and access to guns. I will ask the first question: Do we really need 30 round magazines?
There are no easy answers, but I believe that more guns, bigger guns and easier access to guns are answers that are not acceptable– We tried it, and it has not worked.
You cannot ask the mom of the shooter, who was killed as well. She was an avid gun enthusiast killed by her own gun by her own deranged son.
Please stop the madness...

As long as some believe that guns are the only path available for those with mental illness to take to inflict pain and suffering on people, well, then guns will indeed look like the villain.
Imagine if he had gone into that school with a machete instead. How many little children do you think would have successfully evaded his wrath? It would almost certainly have wound up with the same body count, and quite possibly an even higher total of dead and wounded teachers and children, because there would have been no gunshots to warn other adults in the building.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again ...... once someone puts it in their head that they are going to commit a senseless act of violence, the weapon becomes unimportant. Think that the guy in the Batman movie theater couldn't have used Molotov Cocktails in his attack on innocents, and that he couldn;t have caused just as much more, or even considerably more damage and death?
Think that this kid couldn't have killed more children and teachers if he had been forced to use nail bombs, or other rather simple explosives, or even "just" a pair of machetes?
Insanity is hard to fight when you are unarmed .... because insanity is always a weapon to start with, and insanity also always looks to do the most "vibrant" damage. They want to make a hug impact. Take away a gun, and another, maybe even more heinous weapon, will appear.
The weapon never lights its own fuse, swings its own blade, or pulls its own trigger ..... and we are naive if we think that insane attacks will be stopped simply be removing a single type of weapon from the board.
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

I agree.
I would think guns make it easier for the monsters....puts them further from the action but as you said, a monster is a monster. They'll use knives, bombs, fire or something else.

I understand where you are coming from Charger,, especially at this moment when so recently, senseless killings of children occurred.
But let's say we got all the guns, legally and illegally owned, off the street, if someone is hell bent on killing, all they have to do is what Timothy McVee did in Oklahoma.. Each item he had possession of was legal by itself, yet when combined, they are deadly.
Can you imagine what would have happened had this kid used that weapon instead of a gun?
Point is, If someone wants to kill, they will find a way. man I hate saying that, but it's true.
