but why build up that excitement over the guy considering how unlikely he seems?

Lack of QBs in the draft?

Who says that he's unlikely?

He was an energetic, dynamic, and effective leader in Indy. He took that team, and pushed, prodded, and drove to become a winning team.

I respect the hell out of a job like that. Indy had every reason at that point to give up and quit. Arians would not let them. He got everything possible out of his players, and probably even more.

He might be unlikely ..... but it's all conjecture at this point. None of us really know who is on the top of Haslam's and/or Banner's list. He might get an interview and blow them both away. He is my preferred candidate.

That article is just so much stroking the powers that be that it's almost gut wrenching!

Banner was the pencil pusher and now he wants tons of power. Haslam was a minority owner as a part time job for four years while his full time job was CEO of a truck stop chain.

And now the press and fans have some cause for huge hope putting their faith in that?

Will they ever learn.........

I do agree with Banner and Haslam about the primary thing to look for in a head coach though .... that being leadership. We have had some weak coaches as far as leadership goes. I am ready for someone who can lead this team instead of just kinda floating along with the team. I want a coach who gets out in front, and leads.

Only if they find someone to lead them in the right direction. Custer lead his men to slaughter.

I'd like to hear their definition of leadership actually. Consistancy is a wonderful thing if it is gaining ground and heading in the right direction.

But you can also look at sheep. Once that first one leads its way into the slaughter house, the rest follow without question.

Leadership is a fine quality, but only if you find the right leader.

I hope we dont go the way of this years hot cordinators...

I am intrgued with Bill O.brian from Penn St.

Like Lovie Smith, but concerned with his Offense side of the ball,

not sold on Kelley, his meanor scares me and when I think of him, butch Davis comes to mind, not fair I know, but it does

If we want Lovie we need to move fast...Dont want him bringing half the bears team with him, Urlocher would be nice in a Browns uniform, but dont know how much is left in his tank, but his secondary always plays tuff and creates turnovers, but once again, his offence leaves alot of concern. but love his leadership..

The Browns roster is also viewed as one of the best - if not the best - among the teams with vacancies at the top.

This just goes to show how much Heckert has done for the Browns. I would have to assume the ONLY reason Heckert was let go was due to respect for Heckert and Heckert not wanting a reduced role (No final say and ect).

And I get the feeling having Haslam as the Owner of the Browns will do wonders for bringing in those tough hires that have never wanted to come to the Browns (Head Coaches) that is. I'm not sure how Banner is viewed by others in the league.

Name any successful head coach in the NFL. You do not have to limit your selections to current head coaches you can go back as far as you like.

OK then, now who was their quarterback?

Head coaches are important but it is really hard to win without a quarterback playing at a high level.

Look around on Black Monday coaches die because of poor play at QB.

Look at the failures in Cleveland. You can lay some blame on the coaches but when you look at the quarterback play, well draw your own conclusion.

Do you think it was coincidence that the Colts who were 0-12 and ended winning 2 games last year and now this year won 11 games? Does anyone really believe Bruce Arians was the reason?

How about Washington and Seattle? Although I do give some credit to coaching there. Especially Seattle where Pete Carroll had the guts to to draft and play Russel Wilson.

All these candidates for the HC job in Cleveland will not be worth spit if a quarterback is not identified. Let me be very clear there is no quarterback on the Browns current roster who is capable to lead a team to a championship.

Lewis made it very clear Mr. First Round Pick is not the answer.

At this point I am bored by the regime change process. It's like Groundhog Day.

I have heard it all before. Now we have another billionaire son who doesn't know squat about the NFL. He goes out and hires Banner ( his bio is pretty clear). Banner then goes and hires a President. So now he is clear of certain responsibilities so he can run Football Operations. Banner and Haslam will hire a Head Coach then go and get a Personnel Director. A lackey yes man like Lombardi. Banner as CEO will have plenty to say about all personnel decisions.

The Organizational Chart is clear like gin.

Plug and play all these guys including the next "great head coach" coming to Cleveland who will tell us all about how committed everyone is to bringing a championship to the city of Cleveland.

Whoever that someone is I sure hope Santa was good to him and got him a gift certificate for a great quarterback.

I suppose that could enter into it. In an article somewhere on here, Richardson admitted that he played with 2 broken ribs for some games this year.. In that same article, he said he hoped the Browns would get Saban..

Maybe it will happen.. dunno But I'm not convinced he's the NFL Type. Just like I don't think Joe Pa would have been anywhere near as successful in the NFL.

The difference here is, we've seen Saban give that a shot..

Speaking of shots,, anyone think that Tressel will get a look?

*Rambling thoughts from an old fart* To all of you claiming Kelly's offense won't work in the NFL I would like to remind you that back in the day the same thing was said about Paul Browns offense. People gave every excuse in the world why it wouldn't work, yet just look how he changed the NFL game and look at the success he had. Kelly could do the same thing with the current group of doubters.

well, BONEFISH, you're all sunshine and lollipops, aren't you? i just so happen to agree with everything you said.

i will add that that i agree with one thing in the Bud Shaw article. by discarding Heckert, and the trend of steady roster improvement, Haslam and Banner have made their bed. slow improvement is not enough. they are impatient and want to win now. so that is my expectation now. if their handpicked team doesn't yield playoffs in 2013, then they should take ALL the heat.

one silver lining, in what appears to be a looming black sky, is that if this goes bad maybe we'll be so terrible next year we'll actually qualify for a stud QB prospect. we always seem to be awful, but not quite awful enough to secure THE QB. maybe we'll back into that through this "debuild."

Chip Kelly, Bill O'Brien, Kyle Shanahan, Mike McCoy.

Ideally it's Chip Kelly. It's time for the NFL game to be revolutionized. It's happening now and it's time to take it to the next level.

My guess is Banner's signing of Josh Johnson this past week (as a backup in a spread option system) is a sign of things to come.

And RG3 and Russell Wilson are carrying out Tebow's original promise. (plus, I wouldn't call the Jets a bunch of geniuses, especially in the offensive game plan)

And the offense that Tebow ran in Denver, while not prolific, won a lot of games and had defenses caught off guard. Dick LeBeau was caught with his pants down in the playoffs.

What was missing from Tebow's game was the passing ingredient. The new breed of QB's (RG3, Cam Newton, Russell Wilson and Colin Kaepernick) have that passing ingredient.

For years this board has clung to stone-age football philosophies. The game is changing and I want the Browns to be on the forefront of it.

Ya know DNA I have been the supreme optimist most of the time.

I thought Carmen would build another 49'er dynasty. Then I thought Butch had the answers because of his success at Miami and the pros that came from that program.

Then along came Romeo and I thought hey, a Belichick guy along with a draft guru guy Savage. Mangini, I was a little skeptical especially the way he hired Kokinis.

When Holmgren took office I was ecstatic. Loved the hire of Heckert. Went along for the ride on Shurmur.

Now All I hear all around the media is: Cleveland has a great young roster. So, what happens? Banner gets hired and Heckert calls the moving van because he knows he is gone. Look at the roster outside of the QB (because that was Holmgren). Look at the middle and late round picks that are playing well. Obvious Banner and Heckert equal oil and water.

Banner says we will hire a head coach first. And then get a Personnel Director. Then you hear Chip Kelly is the first choice. A guy with zero NFL experience. You connect the dots and just know that Banner is going to be "involved" in personnel decisions.

Heckert should be the GM with complete control of the roster. They should hire Lovie Smith as head coach as fast as you can dial his phone number and then bring in Norv Turner as OC and keep Jauron as DC.

First decision bring in competition at QB and I am not talking about retreads. Look very closely at Tyler Wilson.

Will that happen? Of course not.

I am just Joe Smoe who has followed this team since I delivered the Plain Dealer when Jim Brown played and Paul Brown was head coach.

Funny though all these regimes were all suppose to have the answers but what happened to the results?

I couldn't agree with this more. Watching what Wilson has done in Seattle and RG3 in Washington, these are not "gimmick" offenses. They are offenses designed around the physical talent that some of these guys have.

With Richardson in our backfield and some of our speed/talent at WR/TE, we could be dangerous with a gifted quarterback like any one of those guys you mentioned.

Bingo.

Peen was on the forefront of saying the NFL game was bound to change and it really opened my eyes to it. Once Tebow was succeeding in Denver I think it opened a lot of eyes to NFL coaches that a similar system can be run with a college QB who is better at passing than Tebow (and I still won't close the book on him just yet).

after getting over the disappointment over letting Heckert go I now really dont care who we bring in here. I think it would take an epic failure as a head coach hire to not at least get to 10 victorys next year with the current talent on the roster.

Banner (for better or worse) is now in charge of the draft and for the most part stocking the 80+ players for the coach to pick from.
I'll probably drop by when we name our new HC and maybe again if we name a puppet GM but for the most part I really dont care who they hire anymore.
They have to be better then Shurmur and that is plus.

FA signings and the draft are going to be my next interests.

Sure we'll just go grab a really good throwing running QB. They're all over. I gave change to one outside a MCDonalds this morning. You know just like all the really good throwing pocket passers. Bought a cup of coffee off one of those yesterday.
Finding a QB is a crap shoot. We've just shot a lot of crap. Changing our entire offensive phylosophy isn't going to change our luck. Just a massive part of our roster.

Oh and the book is written on Tebow. Then it was incased in concrete and dropped in the Mariana Trench. He's a hack.

You say this as fact, when everything that has been published specifically has Banner stating that the HC will have that power. He even said that a GM wasn't completely out of the question.

I love the way agendas appear on this board and are stated as fact. I wish everyone would wait until they at least make one hiring, before the jumping of conclusions continues.

Because, while it's a long shot, when the offense took advantage of his strengths, the Broncos won.

The Jets are just a coaching trainwreck, so I take pretty much everything they do with a grain of salt.

This isn't about Tebow. It's more about RG3 and Russell Wilson. The game is going in this direction. Get on board or get left behind.

Besides, I'm pretty tired of "MY offense," as Mike Holmgren liked to say.

We'll see how long QBs like Wilson, Newton, and RG3 last in this league. I don't think their bodies are built to last more than six years in the NFL.

Another question. So if Kelly is picked as the head coach who's going to be his OC? Him? Who else knows his three card monty O well enough to call plays in it? I know his ego is massive (well documented around these parts) who's he going to bring in? Belotti? A current underling of his at Oregon? (Great, another coaching staff with no NFL experience.) Or will he also be the OC?

I'm not an advocate of what Ammo is saying on the subject, but have you seen the shelf-life of QBs in the Browns QB carousel lately? Six years of productive play would be a godsend to this success-deprived franchise.

Not one year wonders like Billick or even Gruden in Tampa but coaches who won consistently over a long period of time.

Billick and Ditka won Super Bowls with great defenses. Those are exceptions not the rule. If you assemble a great defense yes you can win but you can not win over time without great play at quarterback.

Some days it's better to be lucky than good. You do know they pulled that off with Tebow throwing for under 47% right?

Silly rabbit!

I wasn't the one who brought Tebow into the mix...... You were.

I really never questioned the other two. Even though you seem to dismiss how well an ageing Peyton Manning is doing in Denver.

I'm not saying that the RG3/Wilson mold doesn't open another option to coaches because it does. But to act as though it will be the singular model for the future I believe to be a bit naive at best.

I'm not dismissing Peyton Manning and there will always be a place for a guy like Manning in the NFL. But there are fewer pure pocket passers in college to choose from. Just like there are in high school.

At some point, NFL teams have to adapt if they don't have a pocket passer and the chances of finding one are growing increasingly slim.

It's not a singular model. What I do know, however, is that "MY offense" in the Mike Holmgren concept is a dead scheme. I don't want an offensively-challenged coach, nor do I want offensive-minded coach whose scheme is dated and is unwilling to adapt.

I've seen some form of the WCO ran with oth types of QB's.

You never know, within a few years, depending on the direction this team takes during that time, you may wish Holmgren were still here.

I mean without Holmgren there would never have been a Heckert. Let's look at the talent level and direction this team is headed in a few years from now and then reflect, shall we?

Let's see who the key players are on this team then and who was responsible for bringing them here. Then we can have an informed discussion on the matter....

Cardinals "very close" to hiring Andy Reid.

Reid should know Kolb really well from his Philly days .... and must think that he can fix him by running the right offense. They do have a strong defense awaiting their next head coach.

a similar system can be run with a college QB who is better at passing than Tebow (and I still won't close the book on him just yet).

You actually had me paying attention up until this!

What was I thinking!!??

I don't want Tebow here, I don't think in the long run he's the answer. But there is NO DENYING that he wins. Just look at his record.
