What I think will happen:

Kansas City - Geno Smith
Jacksonville - Star Lotulelei
Oakland - Damontre Moore
Philadelphia - Luke Joeckel
Detroit - Dee Milliner

That leaves us with Jarvis Jones. I've made it clear I don't want Mingo. You could persuade me with Dion Jordan.

I'd take a good 20 or more players BEFORE Jones if put in that spot...the only other player I'd feel is worth the 6th overall though is Ansah, who will be a much better Pro than Jones

Watching him on tape was the biggest surprise ever for me. I expected to see a hyped up freak who lacks not only stats but also game....being raw and everything. My jaw dropped to the floor watching him play: relentless motor, versatile, 100% team player, lining up EVERYWHERE in the front 7 (a lot on the nose too, that's why his stats suffered)....and he STILL has incredible upside left, but I also see a decent floor already. This dude can play day 1...and yeah, he's a big guy that can run (and hit). I really think he's a top10 guy on many boards already and all the internet boards will "catch up" after the combine when stuff will be "rumored". He will put on a show this weekend....he's soo good, I would not know what to do if both him and Moore were still there at 6

I feel like he got a bad rep because of him being labeled a super freak. He needs to work on his run defense technique but it has nothing to do with effort.

Browns notebook: NFL Network’s Mike Mayock says Georgia linebacker Jarvis Jones makes sense at No. 6

By Nate Ulrich Beacon Journal sports writer
February 19, 2013 - 12:03 AM

NFL Network’s Mike Mayock agrees with his counterparts from ESPN who believe the Browns should forget about drafting a quarterback sixth overall and instead target a pass-rushing outside linebacker or end who would mesh well with new defensive coordinator Ray Horton’s 3-4 multi-front

The consensus, though, stops there.

In their most recent mock drafts, ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay predicted the Browns will take Florida State defensive end Bjoern Werner and Louisiana State defensive end Barkevious Mingo, respectively, at No. 6. However, Mayock doesn’t deem Werner, Mingo or Texas A&M defensive end Damontre Moore, another player often tied to the Browns, worthy of top 10 selections because he doesn’t believe they

Mayock thinks Georgia outside linebacker Jarvis Jones is the best fit for the Browns at No. 6, provided he checks out medically. Jones played for Southern California in 2009 and was diagnosed with spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the spinal column, after injuring his neck. USC’s team doctors would not clear him to play again, so he transferred to Georgia after their doctors granted approval for his return.

“I think Jarvis Jones is the guy, as long as he checks out medically, whose value is commensurate with the sixth pick,” Mayock said Monday during a conference call.

Jones, a redshirt junior whom Georgia lists as 6-foot-3 and 241 pounds, had 13½ sacks in 2011 and 14½ in 2012. He led the nation in sacks, tackles for loss (24½) and forced fumbles

Mayock compared Jones to outside linebackers LaMarr Woodley and James Harrison, standout pass rushers in the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 3-4 system. But regardless of his production, the medical tests Jones undergoes at the NFL Scouting Combine, which runs Wednesday through Feb. 26, will play a crucial role in determining his draft stock.

“Unfortunately there’s nothing he can do to alleviate the medical concerns,” Mayock said. “He either has stenosis or he doesn’t, and it’s either continuing to narrow his spine or isn’t. Coming out of the combine in about a month or so, we’ll have a better idea of that when teams begin to share all that medical information. So let’s take that off the table for a second, and let’s assume that’s not a problem and let’s talk about what kind of football player he is. He’s explosive. He’s tough. He’s a

Mayock also raved about two other pass rushers, Oregon’s Dion Jordan and Brigham Young’s Ezekiel “Ziggy” Ansah.

“I kind of like Dion Jordan, who I think is two years away from being an Aldon Smith-type player,” Mayock said. “He’s only about 240 pounds, but he’s 6-7. He’s got frightening athletic skills. He’s a year away. So he’d be a situational pass rusher year one and if he puts 20 pounds on, I think he’s going to be a perennial All-Pro. I really like that kid. But again, that’s a little bit of a risk-reward betting on this kid two years from now.”

Mayock said Ansah, a Ghana native, had an average week of practice last month leading up to the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., though he might have been the best player on the field

“He’s so gifted some teams are looking at him as a 3-4 outside linebacker while other teams are saying with that frame he could be 290 [pounds] and be a 3-4 defensive end,” Mayock said. “So it’s kind of interesting. Teams are looking at him as a 4-3 end, a 3-4 outside linebacker and a 3-4 end. You can’t say that about many kids and it goes to his unbelievable athletic ability and huge frame. I’m willing to bet on the kid, and I think he’s going to go earlier than later.”

Mayock thinks this year’s draft has great depth but lacks difference makers typically found in the top 10 selections. That could make trading down difficult for teams with early picks.

“I wouldn’t want a top 10 pick this year,” Mayock said. “I think the fifth pick in the draft and the 25th pick in this draft are very

He’s not impressed with the quarterback class, either. Mayock said he thinks West Virginia’s Geno Smith and Southern California’s Matt Barkley should be drafted between picks 20-32. He said the Browns would be “reaching” if they took a

If the Browns want to pursue a quarterback in the third or fourth round, Mayock said Arkansas’ Tyler Wilson, Tennessee’s Tyler Bray and Florida State’s E.J. Manuel could go in that range. Mayock also likes Duke’s Sean Renfree, whom he projects as a fifth-round choice.

And then...

This is the perfect year, and I mean perfect year to be super aggressive if they like Flacco, and if he gets the regular franchise tag. There are no sure fire stars at 6 ...... so trading away that pick doesn't hurt us, and presumably an upper tier QB like Flacco would put us higher in the draft next year.

6 this year is similar to a mid round pick in most years ...... there are no premiere QB or pass rushers available ...... then we might as well go get our QB in free agency if he's available.

mid round or mid first round? I think I know what you are saying...

And I agree with your premise, if you believe Flacco is that good... giving up a 6 this year and hopefully something in the high teens or early 20s next year isn't a bad price to pay for an established 28 year old QB with very solid playoff experience.

Mayock is talking out his butt. This is an incredible draft class but it isnt a great offensive class. There is a plethora of elite level defensive talent. I saw in another thread he is saying his top 4 players were 2 guards and 2 tackles? He is so full of it.

There hasnt been a guard taken top 10 in 30 years and he is saying this year we have 2 in the top 5 and Fisher is the kind of talent you get at the end of the first not at the top. Joeckel is the best player in this draft but there isn't another 0 player worth taking in the next 15 including Warmack and the fact he thinks cooper is top 10 is laughable.

If you want defense. Now is the time to get it. If you want offense you will probably have to find it in FA or trade for it.

I'm of the opinion that there's a top tier of about 8-10 players. From there it's pretty flat for about 40 players, then a slight dropoff to about another 40.

I think having the #6 pick is actually a catbirds seat.

The #1 pick is not going to be a significantly more gifted player than his 8-10 top counterparts. And our top need (IMO) is a pass rusher, which constitutes half that list.

If it's me I'm not budging from 6. I'm actually thrilled with our position this year.

By the way....

Just caught this regarding Jarvis Jones. He was born October 13th, 1989.

He's going to turn 24 this season.

Demontre Moore was born September 11th, 1992.

He's going to turn 21 this season.

That sure makes me like Moore a whole lot.....better.

I can't find anything on his high school years (though I admit I didn't look too hard).. but he turned 20 in fall of '09 which was his freshman year of football at USC.. so it appears he didn't graduate from high school until he was almost 20... wonder what happened...

When I was 20 I still was maturing into a man physically. That has to translate to the football field. The 23 year old me could have beaten the 20 year old me to a pulp.

He was granted a medical release by USC because they weren't going to let him play any more because of the injury so he didn't sit out a year.

Horrible decision. You have 7 DE/OLB types competing for the first round and Jones should be fastest guy there and one of the most explosive and athletic players in the entire draft. This was his chance to lock himself in as a top 5 pick and all he did was allow others to steal his thunder. He is the natural OLB of the group. wow this was bad, he should make a lot of these guys look foolish in drills.

Whomever advised him to not work out is an idiot.

That's a shame, because if he is medically cleared to play, this is exactly the kind of player I want on defense. he is a real difference maker ... a play maker, and a guy who has to be accounted for on every play.

No big deal. You can bet he is going to run at some point.

It all points to he isn't as fast as hyped, or the hype was 100th away from a higher number....though I know by watching him many times this season he is plenty fast, but in a era where shaving a few 100th off a time can make it like a 10th off the time can mean big money, who blames them.

Guys who don't run are the guy's who pinned the very best number they ever hit but in reality didn't hit it often. Guys who run hit their number time and time again.

When your best, and slightly less than best is a big difference in scouts eyes, you seek every advantage you can get.

I hate it when guys don't do the drills or when QB's don't throw. Some have legit reasons.

At least Jones won't have any big time competition come his Pro Day. Everyone will be there.

3/21, Boise State
3/21, Eastern Kentucky
3/21, Georgia
3/21, Kentucky
3/21, Stanford
3/21, Texas-San Antonio
3/21, William & Mary

And for the first time I now see one individual stating the stenosis is a MILD case. We'll make up our own mind with our own Doctor's but this kid is the smartest thing we could do at 6.

Fill our needs at CB, FS, TE, OG, RB in FA and land this kid at 6.

You should watch him play then

I've seen him get blocked out of plays 1on1 by TEs and RTs FAR to often. He is "making plays" when he has a clear path to the QB....that won't fly in the NFL. There's upside left in Jones since he doesn't play with a high motor, but when reading about his "relaxing" practice habits, I'm not confident enough he'll put in the work needed if his one trick pony style fails at first (and it will). Why would he be motivated to do more, if he gets picked top10 and gets multi millions up front? He'll relax some more, lol

I see maybe a 20% chance of being a Von Miller and about a 50% total bust chance, since he's useless vs the run, the rest is some meh in between like Wimbley which is not worth of a 6th overall.....that's all well before his medical concern. Yeah, he could work out, but the risk/reward is bad value for that pick imho. I want a higher floor and that'd be Moore. The best combo of high ceiling and high floor is Ansah...and I'm sure this dude is part of the reason he won't run at the combine as he'll crush Jones' numbers, lol or maybe he didn't care to practice and was chilling and just started training for his pro day....another red flag to his already questionable work ethic

I admit that I have mostly seen highlights with him ...... but 14.5 sacks, 20 QB hurries, 7 forced fumbles, and 24.5 tackles for loss as a junior would really seem to say quite a lot about his ability, especially playing in the SEC.

As far as not running at the combine ..... big deal. Most of these upper guys run at their own pro days, where they control the environment. (track, etc)

I look back at Whimbley, and see a guy who topped out at 7.5 sacks as a senior. He was not a play maker beyond a few sacks. He had what .... 100 tackles in his 4 year college career? Jones doubled that sack total in his junior year alone, and almost matched Kam's 4 year tackle total.

I have watched Jones play OLB, and I really don't see Whimbley there. He is far more dynamic, is explosive, and has more than one move to the QB. His speed is incredible around the corner. He doesn't just burst around the corner though. They used him on interior blitzes as well, and he was effective.

I feel that he still has upside left to his game, and he doesn't need to adjust to playing OLB, because that's what he already is. I see an attacking, aggressive, and fast player, who seems to understand how to rush the passer from a variety of angles and rush lanes ..... as well as who is effective against the run.

The guy had 14.5 sacks and 20 QB hurries. That's in 14 games. That's roughly 2.5 times in each and every game that he either sacked or pressured the QB. Add in 24.5 tackles for loss, and it's roughly 4 times/game that he either stopped a play for a loss, or hurried the QB into an incompletion. That's impressive, and it's something we really need on this team. You compared him to Whimbley, and I really don't see that comparison. Like I said, I see Jones rushing from multiple lanes, from the OLB position, and being effective in getting around the corner, inside the Tackle, inside the Guard lane, or rushing up the middle with success. Whimbley didn't have that sophistication to his game in college.

I'll take Jones if he checks out medically. His performance on the field is impressive, and appears to be of the type that will translate to the NFL.

YT,

I watched Jones "best" game vs Florida where he put up 4 or 5 sacks. I did a play by play of that game, which overall was just an up and down game to me, he had some pretty glaring negative plays to offset his good ones even in this game and at the end, when thegame was on the line, you can clearly see how Florida ran right at him.
I also did a play by play against Bama in this thread, you know....the kind of talent he will be facing in the NFL every week: and he was dominated the whole game and some of Lacy's biggest runs were all on Jones being undisciplined or not putting in the effort. He just doesn't like defending the run and at 6 overall I want a 3 down player, because as much as they say that this is a passing league, they still run it 45% of the time and your pass rushing will be a non factor if you get run over. On top of that, I also see issues with his pass rushing moves: he runs by tacklers...that's it. In the NFL OTs, TEs and RBs all block much better and are more athletic and I'm not sure he'll put in the work required to adjust to that. I just don't see a guy I'd bet millions on to go to work

Watched the Auburn play by play too now and thought that the first 4 plays of this game represent Jarvis Jones in a nutshell, dangerous when unblocked, non factor when someone gets his hands on him, enjoy:

http://www.youtube.com/v/x4hfGQMmMKo

On that first run, he's the only Georgia defender that was blocked. He was a non factor in that run stop. He wasn't dominated but he was 1on1 vs a TE and really didn't seem to care much when the RB was close to him...eh either was blocked out by the TE or didn't even try to tackle the RB

2nd play: he gets into the backfield unblocked and the LG was too slow moving out to him. Very nice stop on the RB, but again he did it all with speed and he was unblocked...that's the "mistake hitter" I keep referring to

3rd play: He lines up in the middle over the NT and rushes from there. LG completely "ole's" him and he gets into the backfield unblocked. He pressures the QB a bit thanks to that whiff but gets blocked out rather easily by a RB reach-pushing for him. Again, all just speed and on a miss. No move, no urgency to recuperate once touched by the RB

4th play: That's my fav: he gets blocked 1on1 by a TE and seems to be happy with it. The QB has 5 seconds in the pocket on a double play action, pumping the ball and then taking off. Jones doesn't care, nor does he hustle. He took this play off. I guess he thought a run was coming on those 2 play action fakes...and: who cares about a run play, right?

His sack at 1:26min was a coverage sack where he was in a zone and he, again, had a clear path to the QB since the OL didn't care about him anymore and din't expect his QB to scramble. Another "mistake hit".

The plays right after that:

- absorbs the RB in the open field, although he was already tackled/slowed down for him by a teammate from behind. He just doesn't liek to tackle..that's another good example

- gets blocked out by the RB on a deep pass, little hustle/urgency to get to the QB, no moves, just speed. Once he got touched it was over for him apparently

- gets blocked easily by the OT and the screen to his side nets a huge gain. That's the little things I keep mentioning. He's all about getting upfield...cool, but when he's blocked trying, he never seems to activate his brain: he doesn't try to interrupt passing lanes with his hands (something Moore and Ansah do constantly when they realize they won't get to the QB in time) and in this case: he never sees the screen coming...and it was a rather slow developing screen

- gets into the backfield unblocked again and style jumps after an already tackled run. Looked like an unblocked ninja again

- another poor play: gets blocked out easily by the RB again and doesn't sense or care about the QB scrambling to his side. Little motor, little hustle

- he draws a holding vs a TE and run to his side...good play.

I wanted to end this on a good play and took me some time, lol

Go watch it, and tell me what I missed?

Funny, watching Bark Mingo for even only 1min you quickly get the difference compared to Jones.

While I'm not a Mingo fan, his body language, hand usage, motor and overall hustle are FAR better than Jones. You wanna know why Jones has better stats? Jones played standing up every snap and was allowed to run into the backfield almost every play. Mingo was lined up as a classic 4-3 DE where he is severly undersized. Standing up I see a much better football player

Watch that play at 1:12min for what I mean, he actually uses his head:

I admit that I have mostly seen highlights with him ...... but 14.5 sacks, 20 QB hurries, 7 forced fumbles, and 24.5 tackles for loss as a junior would really seem to say quite a lot about his ability, especially playing in the SEC.

For the amount of time each and every one of us spend on this board in a given hour, we could watch entire condensed games on any of these top players. 8 minutes is nothing for any of us, so I would urge anyone interested in viewing these players for themselves to take just a few moments and watch the games themselves. Each game of Jones here is somewhere around 8 minutes. We should all form our own opinions. I'll even do the youtube legwork for everyone. Here's all the condensed games of Jones on Youtube. These are not highlight reels. These are entire games showing ONLY his defensive snaps edited down so that each one of his plays can be shown in just a few minutes. Enjoy.

If people form their own opinions, they'll see how Jones is much better standing up blockers than Dj is professing. His leverage is impressive for a 240 pound guy who will get bigger in the NFL.

People should take 9 minutes each day and just watch. God knows we spend far more amount of time than that debating things without the benefit of watching the actual players in rewind.

Oh yeah, Dj, if Jones is going to bust because I'm backing him, take it up with Mike Mayock. He backs him for us as well.

***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy.
