I don't think so. There isn't much to it, IMO.
He was "the most NFL ready WR" in that Draft when we took him. I think that most folks took that as "he'll step in and shoot up from there". However, I think that the correct translation of that is simply: he's was as good as he's was ever going to get. He's was a completely finished product. There was no ceiling.
When you figure that his dad was an NFL WR coach, it kinda makes a lot of sense. He stood out in college because he did all of the little things that a college WR typically doesn't do - and that college DB's never really see. Then, he came to the NFL where he is plain-jane by comparison. Everyone is doing those little things and all of the DB's have seen it a hundred times a day for their entire career.

Banner has said that he uses his comments to motivate players.
There were rumors that Gordon stopped working as hard as he could late in the season. His final 3 games were only 3 catches for 27 yards, 1 catch for 7 yards, and 4 catches for 49 yards. That was his worse 3 game stretch, but it was also a really tough stretch of games, with games against top defenses in the Broncos and Steelers .... plus having musical QBs the final 2 weeks.
Also, this isn't a typical situation where a new front office and ownership comes in and starts evaluating from the post-season forward. Haslam and Banner came in last year during the pre-season, so they had an entire year to see how players practice and play in person. They obviously felt that some of these players, like Weeden and Gordon, needed a kick in the ass.

Lol. I can't believe they couldn't do better than that for a backup. It's kind of weird that the two most active teams in FA have our rejects backing up their starting qb's.

They tried out Leinart, Seneca Wallace, and Brady Quinn. Of those three at least you know Quinn will help out the starter.

He already signed a contract with ESPN and I'm sure whatever he's making there will be more than an assistant coach would make.
Also, one of the reasons he retired was so he could watch his son play college football at Miami.

Not necessarily. Do you know how many castaways the Bengals have consumed and has actually worked out for them? A good number. Most of them have been on defense and I credit the turnaround to the DC Zimmer. Bengals have been notoriously known for grabbing these guys on the cheap (Mike Brown business model) and taking a shot on them relying on their pretty good coaching. Bengals' fans will never admit this but Marvin Lewis is a very good player's coach as well.
Perhaps their division rival, Ravens, have noticed this and have decided to take a chance as well. I think they still need a ILB.
Hey, if the idea fails, he's cut and I bet they didn't spend a ton on him either.
Will he be the next Ray Lewis? Ha, I don't know. The kid is 23 and if he gets a grinder of a coach, similar to Zimmer, maybe he'll get his act together. It worked for head case Vonteze Burfict. Maybe it can work for McClain.

Yeah, I'm familiar with the Bengals since, like you, I live in the area.
I'm not sure where most of their post-draft castaway acquisitions with character concerns have really been all that stellar for them.
The ones that did do well, aside from maybe Benson, had a decent history of good play prior to coming to Cincinnati. Their biggest knock was their character concern. I'm thinking of people like Owens, and possibly Pac-Man (although a first round pick playing nickel is not very good).
The rest of their character concerns, like Maualuga and Burfict were talented players that fell in the draft due to character concerns. They still had talent though. Some may even argue Maualuga wasn't worth the high second round pick.
I do agree with you that Zimmer is a good coach. He was my frontrunner for head coach here, but I'm very happy with Chud and that's another story.
If you have Game Rewind, I highly encourage you to go back and watch the Raiders games. I've been doing it for Bryant to make observations in his signing thread, but I can't help but notice McClain. His instincts are horrible and he constantly takes himself out of the play. Often, these are very basic reads where his errors have nothing to do with the coaching.
For instance, IIRC on one play against Denver, he was covering the RB in the flat, Manning and the OL were rolling out to the left. McClain abandons the RB with no other coverage in the area and tries to seal off the edge where the LT is (as if Manning of all people were going to turn the corner and take the ball up the sideline himself). RB is now open and, I can't remember, but either gets a TD or mass yardage.
This all is in addition to his character concerns. I really don't think this guy's upstairs can be fixed. Now, on top of all this, they mention the Ravens picking him up "to replace" Ray Lewis." If they mean Ray Lewis' position alone, he still doesn't have the talent or instincts Ray had, from the time he was drafted to when he retired. If they meant Ray Lewis the leader, McClain would have to be a brilliant player who makes good decisions and be an excellent motivator, for which he is neither.

Well, that's what coaches are for, right?
Yes, but under the CBA the number of hours per day (and per week, I believe) that the players can be "coached" is strictly limited.
Another player, however, can work with other players any number of hours without restriction.
So, heading into OTA and mini-camps which will start in just a couple of weeks, having a player on the roster than can knowledgeably work with other players after-hours has some value.

Another move that probably makes too much sense to pull the trigger The Chargers have just 6.7mil cap room left. Offer some money upfront (3-4mil) and take a risk on his health and make the other years performance based. He'll sign quickly and SD has to think hard about matching. He's 24yo, costs no compensation and he's an absolute Colston-like beast when healthy

He is restricted and was tendered by the chargers at the original pick level; however going undrafted means we wouldn't have to surrender a pick, if he signs an offer sheet and sd doesn't match. I would do, as stated above, try to make the best offer for us and that would make it more difficult for sd to match. Maybe 5 million guaranteed, for a 5 year contract, with all 5 guaranteed in first year. League minimum, or just above in the remaining years.
Another nice addition (if it happened, but lots of qualifiers in that 'report'; maybe, perhaps, and possibles  ), could become the #2, with Little in the slot, and Nelson the #4 and or Joker TE type role. Leaving Benjamin to be primarily our kick and/or punt returner.
Statistics are like a bikini; what they show is interesting, but what they hide is vital.
Drive for show (1st round), Putt for dough (rest of draft).

IF we signed Alexander we would have some giant wide receivers. Little would be the smallest one of our top four at 6'2" 220.
