NOBODY is making intimations about a Marine's character based on ink here,...the whole fact of the matter is you're either with the program or you're not. It's that simple.
Whether I personally know the Commandant or not is not an issue here either,....I would support the policy if it DID come from some pencil-necked geek.
Next you tell me it's ok that Bonds is a steroid freak.
All I'm saying is there are lines you don't cross.

Sure sounds like it.

Thank goodness, it is not MY program to get with. I am USNavyDawg not USMarineCorpsDawg.

Then why mention it?

So now, you are compairing Bonds involvement in illegal substances to a Marine with U.S.M.C. tattooed on his forearm?

What lines are those? Just because one does not agree with a policy, does not mean one will not follow that policy.

Well then why don't you just tell us why it wouldn't be a good policy to be enforced, rather than chide someone for expressing an opinion.

Already have.... Scroll back.
And I didn't say it shouldn't be enforced, just said it was a friggin stupid policy. All policies HAVE to be enforced, its the military, you and I both know that, doesn't change the fact that is a dumb policy.

How is it a "fact" that it is a dumb policy ?? It is a fact that you think it is dumb, but that doesn't make it so. My guess is that a poll of the entire pool of those who have ever been Marines would support this policy, but that's just my opinion and doesn't make it a fact. Additionally, I doubt society in general would not approve.
I respect your diligence in defending your view. The Commandant is the boss and that's the end of it to me. The policy is in keeping with time-honored tradition and military discipline. I don't see it any differently than I do the requirement for an enlistee to be a high school graduate.

We are just going to have to agree to disagree. We obviosly are seeing this from different perspectives. On that note, if you have felt offended by any of my prior posts, was not my intention. As a Marine retiree you defenitely have my respect, but definitely not going to change my view. Ooh Rah On a side note, If you go link (go to page2, the first set I gave him were a bit blurry, the second set is on page 2)you will see I gave the site admisitrator 4 avatars that he said will be incorporated this weekend. One Navy, one Army, one Marine Corps, one Air Force.

Once you sign those enlistment papers, you are U.S. government property. That's the reality of it and what you agree to. Defaming government property is illegal. Plain and simple. In the past,it's been sometimes enforced and sometimes not.
But it's their right to enforce it and your duty not to defame their property, which you are upon signing those enlistment papers. It pays to read the fine print sometimes.
I agree 100 %. In the Army we were used to saying US ARMY = Uncle Sam Ain't Released Me Yet .

I had pretty much already interpreted an agree-to-disagree policy (npi). You have always been OK on this board as far as I am concerned. NEVER was offense taken, especially in the knowledge of your status as a serving veteran.
I understand the consternation, especially on the issue(s) of rights, Constitution, GI "property," etc. I was/am hung up on why it had to become an out-of-the-closet, public dispute about what was already common sense for most Marines. The Commandant must have gotten some legal advice that this needed to become written in order to be a defensible position. Big, garish tattoos have always been a uniform/image "no-no" in the Corps,....somehow it must have gotten out of hand in accord with societal shifts.
You probably wouldn't be surpised to learn, I don't care much for any of the ones today's professional athletes sport on their bodies either.

No, I am not surprised, but that is just another case of differences in opinion.
Don't get me wrong, I don't have nor want any "large" or "offensive" tattoo's personally.
I have 4 tattoo's (one is even a browns helmet) each of them is about the size of my hand. Each located on strategic parts of my body. They are placed so wearing normal clothing, you would never know I had a tattoo. But I did that for ME not for any policy. If I want a tattoo that is big and visible, I should (as the Marines should) be able to get it, as long as it isn't in bad taste. My personal preferance is not to do that, but if I wanted to, its my body.
