I would expect that the NFL, as always, will wait for the final shakeout of things before making a move of any sort, but you can be sure that Goodell and the other owners have started making phone calls to learn how hot this is.
we should all wait for the shakeout.

We'll have to see how this actually turns out, and if they settle for some reduced charges (most likely) and a hefty fine.
I refuse to worry about this crap until there is good reason to. That time hasn't hit for me yet.

I dont remember the last time an owner of an NFL team was raided by the FBI and The IRS or how that effects a franchise.
Well there wasn't a last time................ this aint good. Have you forgotten the team you root for and the many snakes that have jumped out of mailboxes?

In my opinion, Jimmy Haslam spent 1 billion dollars (some stolen) to buy the Browns and Completely bury us. His loyalty lies with the Steelers.

Unlike you, I'm not disappointed in how it's looking. I'm pissed off. Haslam lost credibility no matter how this turns out. (unless the FBI and IRS issue an "oops, we messed up. Sorry about that" statement)
When I make this next statement, I will be the first to admit I have a bias. But, spoiled little rich kid running his hard working daddy's business and making money hand over foot, decided it wasn't enough money, so in order to make more money, he screws the little people. And anyone else he can."

Awesome, we'll be the first NFL team with an owner in prison. Can't wait. And while nobody knows how this will turn out, I'm thinking the NFL will be revoking the purchase to Jimmy, owning for a season or two, and then selling to a new owner (which equals a new front office/coach). Wow.

"Some officials are saying privately that they haven't been this worried about an owner since former San Francisco owner Eddie DeBartolo Jr. DeBartolo was involved in a corruption case of a former Louisiana governor and as a result of a guilty plea paid a $1 million fine and had two years of probation. NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A Pilot Flying J employee told investigators that CEO Jimmy Haslam, who is also the owner of the Cleveland Browns, knew about rebate fraud at the truck stop chain his family owns, according to an FBI affidavit unsealed Thursday. The 120-page document filed in federal court in Knoxville, where Pilot is based, alleges that members of the company's sales force preyed on smaller trucking companies by reducing the amount of rebates they were owed for buying certain amounts of fuel. [+] Enlarge AP Photo/Jay LaPrete, File Browns owner Jimmy Haslam knew of a fraud scheme at his travel center company, according to documents released in federal court on Thursday. Special Agent Robert H. Root in the affidavit alleged a "conspiracy and scheme to defraud executed by various Pilot employees to deceptively withhold diesel fuel price rebates and discounts from Pilot customers ... for the dual purposes of increasing the profitability of Pilot and increasing the diesel sales commissions of the Pilot employees participating in the fraud." The affidavit was filed to secure the search warrants used in Monday's raid on the Pilot Flying J headquarters. One employee identified only as a confidential source told investigators that the rebate scheme was discussed during sales meetings attended by Haslam and Pilot president Mark Hazelwood. Haslam, who in a news conference earlier this week denied any wrongdoing, said in a written statement Thursday evening that "the foundation of this company is built on its integrity and that any willful wrongdoing by any employee of this company at any time is intolerable." He said the company would continue to cooperate with authorities and conduct its own investigation. Haslam was in Cleveland on Thursday to help prepare for next week's NFL draft. League spokesman Greg Aiello declined to weigh in on whether the investigation would affect Haslam's role as team owner. "We must respect the process of a federal investigation and decline comment," Aiello wrote in an email. The company headquarters was raided Monday by FBI and IRS agents. Pilot Flying J is a private company mostly owned by Haslam; his brother Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam; their father and company founder Jim Haslam; and other family members. Pilot Flying J is the nation's No. 1 retailer of diesel fuel, and its customer rebate program with trucking firms is at the center of the investigation. The affidavit claims top sales officials engaged in a conspiracy and scheme to defraud customers by withholding diesel fuel price rebates in order to increase the profitability of Pilot and the sales commissions of Pilot employees who participated in the fraud. AFC North blog ESPN.com's Jamison Hensley writes about all things AFC North in his division blog. • Blog network: NFL Nation The informant said the practice was known by a variety of euphemisms ranging from "manual rebates" to "screwing." While the federal investigation continues, Browns CEO Joe Banner said Haslam has jumped right back into his football job. Cleveland has the sixth overall pick in the NFL draft. "This is the first year Jimmy has really owned the team and has the chance to put his imprint on it, so I think he's excited in general," Banner said. "We're glad to have him here. He asks good questions. He's a good asset to have as an owner. "Jimmy isn't in there, watching film [of potential draft picks], but he's very involved with our entire process." link Being a Browns fan: Where the only reason you laugh is in order not to cry.

J/C...
In a world of billionaires (NFL), with all the resources in the world at their disposal financially to investigate things like potential ownership, does anyone else find it odd that this couldn't have been found out ahead of time? No one in the FBI could have been a source to someone in NY - or Lerner - to say "hey, may wanna hold off on this one for a bit"? Are they THAT eager to make their profit that they perhaps do a google search and call a bank to see how much is in the old checking account? Only in Cleveland.
A final gift from the Lerner family... Jimmy Haslam.

DeBartolo was involved in the corruption case of former Louisiana governor Edwin Edwards. DeBartolo pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to report a felony, and received a $1 million fine and two years of probation in return for his testimony against Edwards. Edwards was on trial for extortion and other charges, among which were the $400,000 he demanded from DeBartolo to gain a river boat casino license. DeBartolo never received the license, was fined by the NFL, and barred from active control of the 49ers for one year. That legal battle led to another, and as part of a settlement, DeBartolo gave up control of the 49ers in 2000, ceding control of the team to his sister Marie Denise DeBartolo York.

And he only failed to report a felony. If Jimmy is actually PART of the felony and knew about it... ...wow, this franchise is so screwed.
As Sperg said in another thread, I can't think of a time in my lifetime where all three Cleveland teams were in this bad of shape.

America - getting busted by the Feds for a corruption charge involving a State Governor; and buying your way out of it.
This will soon shift to back-page news and then it will be brushed under the rug, I'm sure. There's enough people with big money circling this that strings are going to get pulled everywhere. Probably, like DeBartolo, there will be some kind of fine for Pilot Flying J, some underlings will take some heat, and it will somehow be "proven" that Haslam had no knowledge of things, and this will all go away.
Hehe.... keep an eye on the Tennessee Governor and whether or not that thing with Medicare happens??? lol

No, my guess is that DeBartelo was probably a part of the felony as well, but was able to plea to only "failure to report". $1,000,000 fine? When have you ever heard of that? It was a bought plea.

As you would imagine, many, if not all, of the league's owners and other top NFL officials are watching the situation with the FBI's investigation of Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam's business, Pilot Flying J. The overall reaction, according to several league officials, is that some owners are "absolutely terrified." Said one NFL source: "More than a few owners are scared to death. The fear is that even if he did nothing wrong, the damage of the investigation alone, and the headlines that come with it, could damage a Browns organization trying to steady itself." Some officials are saying privately that they haven't been this worried about an owner since former San Francisco owner Eddie DeBartolo Jr. DeBartolo was involved in a corruption case of a former Louisiana governor and as a result of a guilty plea paid a $1 million fine and had two years of probation. He was also punished by the NFL. That's the kind of concern the league has now with this case. It's getting extremely ugly and extremely serious. The government alleges that Flying J has engaged in fraud for "many years" according to an affidavit. It's alleged that Haslam's company committed acts of rebate fraud and that Haslam knew. The NFL isn't commenting on the allegations. Haslam was seen as a steadying force for one of the league's proud teams. That belief could change. CBS Sports.com

However it shakes out, that company is a den of thieves and Haslam seems more and more like a grifter. I seriously doubt this costs Jimmy his ownership, but I suppose it is possible. If it won't make the NFL look too bad they will back Haslam. He's their kind of guy..... but if the publicity gets too bad they will dump him quick.

He testified against the governor (i.e. The Big Fish). That's how he got out of jail.
The Big Fish here is Haslam.
What you say is possible. But if the FBI wants the Big Kahuna and they already have an informant in the fold ... you might see the opposite happening: people copping pleas to testify against Jimmy.
Depends how close his circle is, and how much credibility their informant has.

IMO..
The FBI does not do these things lightly, l if I had to bet my 20 bucks (which I hate to lose) I would bet against Haslam.
I'm sick and tired of my team that I've grown up with being a joke.
Play in traffic Haslam.

I would also add, if he is at the center of culpability, it also depends on how well he covered his tracks or detached himself from the situation (at least in terms of leaving a reasonable doubt buffer).
I have to admit, when I read the article discussing how nervous the other owners were, my first thoughts were "Wow, how many of them have probably done something similar?"
Look at Mike Brown and his history of bringing people who he has screwed over in negotiations (Bob Bedinghaus) into his own inner circle.
Of course we end up with the worst/dumbest one though...

You know ..... I am really, really, really trying not to get overly depressed over this crap. I am trying to remain upbeat and hopeful ..... but it is really dragging me down quite a bit. This franchise is so snakebit that if it were a person, they'd get hit by a train on their way to cash in the winning ticket for the largest ever lottery. The real shame is that I think that we have the best coaching staff we've had in quite some time, and if the franchise is put back up for sale, that may get scrapped along with God knows what else. *Sigh* Maybe next year we'll be back to looking for a new owner, GM, President, coaching staff, and players to fit the (again) new offensive and defensive schemes.
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.
