We will be able to get any QB we want besides whoever is getting drafted #1 overall. At this point I think Mariota is at the top of the QB pile.

??

I disagree. There are alot of teams besides JAX that could end up ahead of us who could also grab a QB.

Vikings
Bucs
Texans
Titans
Eagles
Rams
Cardinals
Raiders (50/50 at this point)
Jets (less than 50/50 of taking QB, but possible if they end up top10)

I don't think that even half those teams are going to consider a QB in the first round.

Eagles have Foles. TB has Glennon. Raiders have Pryor, who isn't doing very badly at all. All of them are young QBs coming into their own. Tennessee is staying with Jake Locker. And I don't see the Jets drafting a QB in the first. I'm not sure I see them drafting a QB at all. They have other needs on that team right now, and drafting another QB isn't one of them.

The Rams probably will give up on the Bradford Exchange and Arizona will probably draft a QB, but it won't necessarily be a 1st round selection. Palmer is under contract through next season.

If the Browns want one, they can draft one in the first round. They'll be able to get them as deep as the 4th round.

The possibility to lose out on the 'top QB prospects' will come from teams with aging vets that still have good QBs on their rosters. For example, the Saints backup to Brees is Luke McCown. They'll be drafting late in the round and have a better chance of taking a QB than most of those other teams.

Other teams that might draft a QB in the first round.

Putzburgh, Dallas, San Diego.

Putzburgh has Roethlisberger (age 31) and Bruce Gradkowski (age 30) and Landry Jones.

Dallas has Romo (age 33) and Kyle Orton (age 30).

San Diego has Philip Rivers (age 31) and Charlie Whitehurst (age 31).

Those teams are more likely to draft QBs in my estimation than most of those others that you listed.

I actually like them both. I liked both coming out of college and Cousins has some NFL gametime experience on his belt. Mallett doesn't, but he's been in a system where he should be learning something, even if it's by osmosis.

I'm not sure that I would trade too much away for either one though.

I also liked Nick Foles coming out of college. I'm not sure that Philly would be willing to depart with him though for a number of reasons.

We'll have to really evaluate these college QBs following the season and go from there.

I like Mallett more than most, but his contract is up after next season which means we would have to sign him to an extension or wait to see how he performs and then give him an extension.

The Redskins seem like they would want a lot for Cousins because of RGIII's injury concerns and they have him cheap for the next few years.

I like Cousins a lot. However, you make a good point about RGIII. Every time he runs, I think he is going to get hurt. He seems frail to me.

Mallet is interesting. I thought he was the best qb of that particular class. I do question his mental toughness, though.

After watching some youtube highlights of the top QB's, and knowing Mariota turns 20 on the 30th, he moves to the top of my QB list.

I wish the Browns had Kenny Guyton right now, he'd be a great UDFA if we can get ahold of him. I'd love to see if his game tranfers from College to pro.

I think it is only a matter of time before Weeden completely implodes or the team gets to the verge of implosion with Weeden at QB. I have to believe that - in spite of the votes of confidence - Chud knows this and has informed Banner and Co.

I think we need two QBs to finish out THIS year. Since they don't grow on trees, I looked around the league and came up with a few ideas.

Shaun Hill - DET

I have always liked this guy. He is not a world-beater...but has played ok on some shaky Lions teams. If we sent them a 4th and Weeden (yeah...I know) would they be comfortable with Kellen Moore / Weeden as #2 behind Stafford? Probably not...I'm sure they are thinking about a playoff run and Hill is great insurance at that spot.

I bet Hill would love to come here...but the Lions aren't likely to do that as they may make a run. Especially if the zebras play for them again in the coming weeks. He is also quite long in the tooth.

Drew Stanton - ARI

He is another guy I have liked for awhile and another former Lion. I thought it was odd when he went to the Jets (via FA) and then was traded to Indy and then re-upped with Indy. Maybe he thought Luck wouldn't be ready?

I think ARI would listen to an offer. They aren't going anywhere and have Ryan Lindley in waiting - not saying he is a future star at all. I can't imagine that they think Stanton will/can be the guy after Palmer finally gives it up.

I also think Stanton would want to come here as our QB situation is bizarre enough for a guy like him to think he may flash ala Hoyer.

Chad Henne - JAX

He would be a perfect fit for what it appears that we need at a minimum. Just give us average to slightly-below average play and we can win some games.

They could use another pick to re-build and all Henne will do is give them a chance to screw up their shot at Bridgewater. If Gabbert stays hurt - or gets hurt - they can roll to the Bridge with Ricky Stanzi.

Matt Moore - MIA

Too bad Miami is making a decent run. They probably think they are going on to a decent record and wouldn't want to roll with Pat Devlin if Tannehill gets dinged.

There are some other backups who are either too old (Orton), too young (Osweiler), or too risky/expensive (Mallet) to take on.

It is interesting to see on the screen how many teams roll with (2) QBs and how few QBs there are on practice squads (9).

The practice squad rosters are no better for QB talent. The more I looked at the rosters, the more puzzling it is that we didn't go after Thad Lewis the day after Hoyer went down.

I believe that Weeden is not long for this team. I believe that something is enough-wrong with Campbell that we almost have only Weeden as an option.

Even IF Campbell becomes the starter, who is HIS backup then? Yeah...I cherish draft picks too. However, we need a body at QB very soon and for next year and the options are slim.

Also, who are our projected QBs for next year? I expect Hoyer to return and don't see Campbell or Weeden here next year. We will draft a young guy.

We need a #2 - assuming Hoyer is #1 - now and next year. If I'm Banner & Co I am calling about Henne and Stanton. They are both guys who could help this year and have a shot to stick next year and beyond as they are 6th & 7th year guys respectively.. That is worth a reasonably cherished draft pick IMO and is not a desperate stop-gap move.

Lastly, I'd consider McElroy off the Bengals practice squad as a #3...for now. I say that because - again - I don't think Weeden will last the second quarter of the year and Campbell is an odd, odd guy. We will need a backup to Campbell after Weeden folds. (Someone has to run the scout team.)

Didn't see AJ McCarron on the list. Where do you think he fits in? He seems to have the size and when discussing level of competition he would probably top that list. I haven't seen him play enough to know if he has the skills to play at the next level.

I think we all knew that Weeden was gone by the end of this season, but I'm beginning to believe that the FO can't wait that long if they want to retain their credility. I don't believe he lasts here (or is relegated to #3) past the Oct 29 trade deadline.

How are they going to find a starting QB at this point in the season?

They aren't going to trade for one. Why waste assets that they need for the off-season? Does it make sense to trade for a guy who might win you one or 2 more games? Not at all. The idea isn't to be slightly better .... it's to take big steps forward. I don't see that happening with some bum off the street. I think that they knew that they might have to ride out this season, so they are prepared to do so. They got somewhat lucky with Hoyer, but when he got hurt, they knew that they would do what they could with Weeden.

As far as interesting QBs who might be 7th rounders/UDFA types that we are curious about ...... I wonder if Kurt Hess of the YSU Penguins will get a look anywhere. He is a big, strong kid, (6'3", 230) with a strong arm, decent release, and decent accuracy. He has thrown 15 TD to 2 INT this season so far. Obviously, the competition level is lower .... but he's got a solid base to build on. He's a 4 year starter, and has accumulated, so far, 8198 yards passing, 68 TD and 25 INT for his career. The Penguins played Michigan State this year, and he completed 40% f his passes with 1 TD and no INT. They lost that game, but that was their only loss of the year. He is also able to run a little bit, and has a body that can handle that role. He's not a run first guy, but he can do that when needed. I think that he's an interesting guy to take a 7th round/UDFA flyer on.

That thing that frustrates me to no end is how this team produced (albeit just two games) with slightly above average QB play in Hoyer. Just imagine if we were able to get consistent QB play and an average running game. With the pieces already in place, this team could be something special.

Even beyond that, how nice would it have been if Hoyer proved to be a player worth starting next year? Having our two first rounders (if used wisely) could have added some nice picks beyond the QB position. Now, we pretty much have no choice but to get a QB in round one and quite possibly would need to use our two picks (and perhaps more) to grab one guy.

Maybe one falls to us at our first first-rounder but I don't know if it's wise to take a gamble on the franchise QB if think you can get the one you want.

I think you take a QB with one of the first rounders or combined to move up and get the guy you like. If Hoyer ends up being awesome, that's a problem we will all take.

I also think it would be a nice situation to be able to have a guy like Hoyer who has the trust and confidence of the coaches, players, and organization behind him, while the guy on the bench can sit.

The whole sitting for a few years argument is outdated and no longer something that QB's have to go through, but I think for a guy like Marcus Mariota, it would be beneficial for him to sit a year (hypothetically, just one of the guys I like and maybe the Browns do too) while he transitions to a much different system, all while we have a guy that we have confidence in.

The higher your draft position, the more likely that is to actually happen.

Trading for a band aid QB to win possibly 2 more games this year, will only lessen the chances one falls to us, or will increase what we will have to pay in order to move up to get a top QB.

I see more wins as a no win when looking at the long term.

Hello, and thanks for reading.
Have you played pro football? College ball? Highschool? Pee-wee?
Have you played Madden before?
Do you sort of kind of know some of the rules of football? If yes keep reading. If no...well also keep reading! We will take ANYONE. This could turn into a regular gig for the right person.
The Cleveland Browns as you may have noticed are having problems scoring points on offense consistently. We are deciding that we actually want to win this year and that we have a real shot at it too. 3 wins in 6 games!? We were expecting maybe 1/3 of those wins for the whole year, but SOMEHOW we have a shot still. Here's the thing...our defense is sick nasty, but we've got problems under center...well one problem. Brandon Weeden. If you're sick of seeing desperation heaves to the sidelines, countless sacks after superb coverage, and underhanded lightly tossed interceptions in the 4th quarter then please come apply! If you can throw a ball, come apply! If you can't, come anyway! We can teach you the basics....throwing the ball to the guy who has the same color shirt as you. Throwing the ball reasonably close to a receiver that's WIDE OPEN, throwing the ball more than 3 yards on 3rd and 16. Think you got what it takes? Come on down! You're the next contestant on Cleveland Quarterbacks!

I get your point...and hope like heaven that such is no where near the hearts and minds of our front office.

Here we are with another fresh start...new fo...new coaches...new players...new attitude...and we are going to keep trotting Weeden out there? So we can get a better draft pick? Good Lord.

They do that...and they are damning themselves to the status of the last guys who also couldn't turn it around. Their message will be lost...again.

Not to mention...that band aid guy we get - whomever it may be - will likely be needed next year as we will likely rid ourselves of Weeden AND Campbell. Leaving us only with an injury-recovery Hoyer and a shiny new QB not named Luck.

They need to be scouring the world for a backup QB right now...with an eye towards this year and next.

I'm not saying they are failures if they can't get another option in here. But they better be trying.

No one will buy Chud's mantra to "get better everyday" if the team goes mentally AWOL with Weeden at the helm and they keep trotting him out there.

Yeah ... OK.

The problem that I have with this is that there is a good chance more national outlets are gonna catch wind of this and bash us in front of all to see.

Fine, we all don't think BW is the answer and want someone new. Well guess what?- this fan mandate is coming from the 2014 draft and stupid stuff like this, trying to look clever, makes all Browns' fan look like a freaking joke.

This is just stupid.

I honestly believe what some have already pointed out is true. Campbell really doesn't serve as a much better alternative, if at all. Secondly, if you sign someone new, it will take some time for them to even learn the playbook to be able to start.

Can you explain to me how winning 6 or 7 games would actually be better than say 4? I mean in all honesty, exactly what would be accomplished there other than put us at a distinct disadvantage at landing a top QB in the draft?

And I think you misunderstood me. I don't see it as "their plan" so much as I don't believe they see a viable and reasonable option. And I would agree with that.

Quote:

They do that...and they are damning themselves to the status of the last guys who also couldn't turn it around. Their message will be lost...again.

I understand how you may feel that way, but I see it differently. Lombardi was very high on Hoyer and they made the move to go out and get him. To me, that shows an effort to address it but Hoyer was injured. It's not like they ignored the problem, which I believe may have made your point more valid.

And did you actually believe the hype that this FO and coaching staff could come in here and turn things around before they addressed the QB position in the draft? The last regime took two shots at drafting a QB and didn't deliver. I don't see how this regime could possibly be compared to the last one until such time as they fail at drafting a QB. To me there would be no comparison at this juncture.

I just believe that going into week 7 or 8 is too late to really make a difference.

They set a precedent that they can accomplish what you are describing before the season next year. They did that with Hoyer. So I see no reason that they should feel some need to do it now.

I guess I would have to ask you....who? Who could they go out and get, get him prepared to play and when would he be ready to play?

Do you really feel there is talent out there available at the QB position you can bring in at the mid point in the season that would have any true impact on this team?

We'll just have to agree to disagree. I saw them go out and sign Hoyer this year and address a much needed addition to our QB depth. To suggest they need to do that now, rather than follow the same plan that worked this past off season simply doesn't add up to me. And I really don't see how trying to sign someone, prepare him to play and get him in there between weeks 10-12 is going to have any real impact.

Mallet maybe.. and unless you are willing to part with a couple of first rounders, you aren't going to pry him from Belichick in mid season. And 'm not sure he's worth that.

DA maybe, but boy would that ever cause a stir around here. Not sure what you'd have to give up to get him.

Matt Moore from Miami? ahh, I don't think so. But maybe.

Cousins? or how about Rex Grossman? The Skins won't let Cousins out of the building knowing how fragile RGIII is.

Drew Stanton? ahh, I don't think so.

Free Agents still available like Matt Leinart or Byron Leftwich or how about JaMarcus Russell or Thigpin? And there is always Vince Young or Tim Tebow (sorry, had to throw that in there because he is available and has experience)

Nothing there sounds all that enticing at all.

I didn't look at every practice squad, but I have my doubts you'll find much there.

Honestly, I think we're stuck with Weeden and Campbell. I don't see a better althernative at this point.

Yeah ...

As predicted, it is spreading.....wonderful.

I guess I would have to ask you....who? Who could they go out and get, get him prepared to play and when would he be ready to play?

Earlier in this thread I laid out several guys I would try to get and the "chances" of actually doing that.

I would look at Vince Young too - he's not mentioned in my earlier thread but I'd look at him. And I think he's below average.

Any of those guys could be a guy to help this year and possibly beyond.

If Campbell isn't going to play, we better get a third guy in here asap. The sooner he's here - even if it's Vince Young or Greg McElroy - the sooner they will get some work in the system.

Maybe they are trying ...maybe they are not...I won't bash them if they don't get a guy. I'm just convinced that the whole thing will soon/eventually implode if they don't at least TRY to get a better/different guy in there.

I suspect that you may very well be right, Willie, except I don't think a 3rd stringer. I'm thinking a starter like a Phillip Rivers (Matt Schaub, anyone?)...

Once again I point to Hoyer. He wasn't acquired last year or even before Campbell because he wasn't available yet.

But we didn't have to get him last year to contribute this year. So I see it unreasonable to say we need to get a QB this year to help us next year. They have just shown us that isn't so.

That would give us Hoyer, draft pick and whoever they sign during the off season, as they did with Hoyer.

I just find it highly unlikely to find a QB to be a "savior for the season" out there. And short of that, it may be very counter-productive to the long term goals of this team.

We are not disagreeing here, Pit. Merely exploring different avenues to achieve the same goal...

Given that Weeden is a bust and they have zero faith in Campbell leads me to believe that they did not 'show what is or isn't so' regarding their ability to get a QB in the off-season. Why wait if you can get a guy who is more than just a stop gap rental?

No one thinks there is an available season-saver out there. However, we have a long-term need at backup QB that - if we can get a guy - would be more than a one year fix.

I'd take Henne, Stanton, or Cassel in a heartbeat. I think those guys COULD be had in a trade. I'd give up our fourth - or maybe even our 3rd - if need be. Yes that is over-paying under ordinary circumstances...but with the turnaround we are trying to advance...I'd say our circumstances are not ordinary. If this thing blows up over god-awful QB play, we will have been happy to get one of those guys in trade for a 3rd or 4th round pick.

Any of those guys could be a viable backup here for a long time.

Note: If they can address the bolded points above without getting a different QB, I'd stand pat. But I have no faith that they can address the bolded points without making a move.

The only place we really disagree is what amount of help any of those you previously mentioned would really be.

As I've mentioned, I believe they see Hoyer as the back-up next season. That or start Hoyer and have a high draft pick as the back-up.

We simply perceive the issue differently. I believe what they will be looking for is a 3rd string QB in the off season.

I don't believe any QB we could get on the cheap, ie... a 3rd round investment or less, can come in here and make a huge difference. If I actually felt that way, I may fall in line with your way of thinking.

We are approaching week 7. If you look at the price tag for a guy like Josh Freeman, I think you'll see the market right now. People get a premium from a team in need. I believe, and feel this FO believes they at least have their back-up in Hoyer and plan to draft a QB.

If that's what they're thinking, I can't see them giving up a 3rd or 4th round pick on what they believe will be a 3rd string QB next year.

I believe we simply have two different trains of thought on the matter. I don't see signing a guy mid season as "saving our season" and you do. No harm in that.

that's how I see it. the longer hoyer plays well, the longer the rook can learn the correct way. it's a win win imo.

tradition can only carry you so far, then you have to start winning again.

Ward is actually above AVG in coverage for a SS and a pretty darn good player vs the run. He's one of the most complete SS around the league. It's pretty much acknolwedged by most NFL analysis sites I know, but there are still some Browns "fans" that try to criticize him because he doesn't play two positions. They seem to want him to cover both S spots and make up for the perennial bad FS play we have had. I didn't forget how much worse we looked when Ward missed the 2nd half of 2011.

I'd like to re-sign Haden, Ward and then Mack (and feeding the troll: said so multiple times already)..in that order. If Mack wants top 3 C money, I'd let him go. If it falls in the 5th-10th range I'd re-sign him.

I agree with this whole reply, I was not high on Ward the past few years but I think he has been very productive in this defense, Wards run support has been solid and he has put up as many points on the scoreboard as some of the offensive players.

Ward is a player worth resigning, the Browns have many holes to fill to get to the next level, no need to create a new hole.

Skrine is another player who is playing very well in this defense and making many plays in run support. I believe he has a few sacks as well this year.

Obviously Haden needs to be resigned, he is a smart CB that does not allow WRs to beat him deep. Haden has no problem taking the holding or interference call to keep his WR out of the end zone.

Mack has been a fan favorite by many and as I think he is a good center I also think he might be a bit overrated. I really have not been impressed with the interior of the OL as a whole. I dont know what it is, but it just seems like there is more than one thing wrong with the OL.

That's what I see as well. Hoyer can be to a rookie QB what Gary Danielson was to Kosar. Or something like that. And as long as Hoyer is winning, then we have the time to develop a youngin like they originally wanted to do with Couch.

The catch is, we need leadership from the top down so what happened to Couch isn't what happens to another rookie.

QB,G,T,WR,RB...basically a new offense. They have to get at least a QB and lineman in the draft, then take it from there.Without those 2,the offense won't improve next year at all.

Man, I watched Bridgewater a few times and I have not been all that impressed with him. I won't pretend I know my QB talent but he looks like he has a very long and slow delivery (I mean he looks good mechanically, it just seems like it takes a while from wind-up to let go), doesn't make good throws, and most of his success has come against bad opponents in the AAC.

Mariota is starting to become my favorite but it might end up being a favorite in a group that may not have the elite talent at the moment.

Who knows...I just came away very unimpressed watching Bridgewater today and it's piled up with some other action I've seen. I'm looking forward to watching the Oregon-UCLA game shortly.

I agreed with Lombardi on Mallett. I think he is a franchise talent or atleast was. 3 years of bench warming you never know how he will react. He is a free agent competing with a ton of young QBs in this years draft. His value is now if the pats were smart to trade him.

As for the college QBs, I have to admit, I love watching Manzeil. I think he is the most exciting player in college football. He can throw guys open and he also gives his guys a chance to get the ball. If we walked out of the first round with Evans and johny football, I would be very excited.

I generally hold off on high rankings of QBs until they show me they are worthy but it is looking like we could see 5 qbs top 10 and possibly as many as 8 or 9 in the first . This group looks is showing more and more every week.

Right now, Boyd and Bridgewater have slipped for me, with boyd falling out of my top 5, bridegwater is #4 for me, and Johny Football, Mariota and McCaron are the big time risers. Hundley may be the top guy on a lot of boards that is, he works that dink and dunk pretty well and fits that scheme well.

Bridgewater would be a great fit for a dome team or a fair weather team. Puts a lot of air under the ball. Tremendous touch and accuracy but I dont know how that touch works in the afc north.

For me I want one of three, Johny Football, McCaron or Mariota. Mariota has the most upside but there is a lot of projection with him. I hope he goes #1 to the Jags. I dont think he is a good fit for this team.

I may be the only one in america that thinks Mccaron is one of the top QBs but he does get pressured, he gets everyones best game and he makes the big plays that produce wins.

boyd I really like a lot but he makes dumb mistakes and after seeing weeden these last 2 weeks, i cant handle stupid anymore. Manziel gets nuts but he is Nuts with challenging his man to make the play. I love a QB that can do that.

Lots of football left and a couple of very important days coming up.

Just wanted to explain on Mariota, I like him a lot but he scares the hell out of me as well. Should say the same thing about Manziel too.

Maybe it's because I haven't seen enough of him (when he was in college) but Mallett always struck me as closer to Derek Anderson than Tom Brady. I just don't see a "franchise" guy there. Good - yes. Great - no.

Other than that I cannot disagree with much else in your analysis.
