The fans have a right to be angry, but they also need to be respectful. ESPECIALLY the media. That "press conference" where the media spent the whole time insulting the owner about the firing of Chud was an EMBARRASMENT to the city of Cleveland. It is one thing to ask pointed questions, it is another to openly insult and mock the owner.

What a complete embarrassment. Ever wonder why this team is a joke, there is one reason why. That was so unprofessional from people who are supposed to be professionals.

Have you seen NY's media??? For years the Cleveland Media had kid gloves when it came to the Browns. The one year they go after them and you are upset? Get out of here with that. Oh and the NY Media is 10 times harder on it's teams than what Haslem and Banner got.

When we fire the next coach maybe they can just release a press release then so the big bad media guys aren't too hard on them.

It wasn't the entire media, and it wasn't the whole time. It was one jackass who opened up his questioning by saying he wasn't a "sports guy".

The rest of the media were fair but critical. I thought for the first time in forever, they did their jobs well. They asked the hard questions. They stayed within the boundary of professionalism though.

People don't get it, but fans are horrible everywhere. How about all the idiots who wanted Ted Thompson out of Green Bay after the Favre drama? All the people who turned on their team? The so-called "best fans" in the NFL.

Like I said before, how about the San Francisco fans who threatened the life of a kid that fumbled a punt?

I don't condone that stuff, but I think it's comical when it's our fault we're angry about our teams being in the dump for a decade and a half... We're the consumers, we're not happy with the product, that's how it works.

It's not our fault that these teams are horrible. They're horrible because they're poorly owned, poorly managed, and poorly executed.

We're fans, we have nothing to do with it.

I can't wait till next year when we start out 2-6, and we fire the head coach ........ then watch the interim head coach go 1-4, so we fire him ....... then fire the interim interim head coach who finishes up the season 0-3 ........ setting a new record for firing head coaches in a single season.

Imagine the NFL shows while that's going on.

I don't think it is exclusive. I just think that the fans/media constant backlash is contributing to the stupid loop that the Browns are stuck in.

If you want to change the culture to a winning culture you have to stop acting like losers at some point. That includes the fans and media.

Fans and Media have nothing to do with it. If the Owner and Front office are listening to Fans (as in Fanatics) they are the wrong people for the job.

In this case the Media was tough on Haslem and Banner because they fired a coach after one year. After Haslem preached stability and continuity when hiring Chud.

The fans and media didn't want Chud fired. I think the general consensus was he deserved one more year.

So I don't get where your statement is coming from in terms of the fans and media contributing to the Browns being perennial losers. Only the Front Office, Coaches and Players are to blame for that.

The other thing is, fans that are horrible, the ones who send horrible things to athletes and coaches, the ones who call shows and rattle off hate.... They are in the far minority. Most fans really don't make themselves vocal.

I think it's a bad take to think we suck because we're not nice enough. I'm sorry, but I will never buy that.

No. It doesn't.

Let me get this right. You are saying that if the media hadn't asked hard, pointed questions, things would be better?

Fire Chud after 1 year, then attend the press conference dealing with it, and ask questions like "while we agree with firing the coach after less than one year of employment, and while he didn't have a qb, or a running game, it was obviously his fault anyway, so can you, oh master, tell us anything about what might be the new future of this team, as the coach has been fired, and you're letting all assistant coaches be free to interview elsewhere?

Any clue at this time as to how you, sir, will honor your word and make this team better? If not, that's okay. I'm sure you'll let us know if and when you do. Thanks for your time, and I'm sorry the fans of the Browns don't understand your superior logic and reasoning. In fact, don't answer my question......I need to come up and polish your shoes just for your being here. And if lombardi ever shows up, I'll bow down to him to. I understand that the only people that need to answer to you, sir, are the fans, and the coach, and we'll keep on with the continuity by firing coaches left and right until someone gets it right. I'll bet, sir, you have hundreds of coaching candidates lined up for the interview process."

Or.......hey, it's obvious chud was a place holder, so who the hell have you unofficially hired?

Screw'em.

Win in 2014, or fire 2 of the 3 stooges, as well as the coach. Again. We can always start over, right? Again. You have a lot of money, you MUST know what you're doing.

Want to know, eve, why we are a joke? If I need to tell you......you might be an atlanta fan where apparently they don't care unless they're good.

I work for my money. My money won't be spent on the Browns until Sir Jimmy puts a consistent winner on the field. Banners clock has been ticking for days......Haslem better hope banner and the other guy that refuses to show his face get it right. If so, I'll be attending games in 2015.

I'm of the opinion that the team doesn't play in a vacuum and is not immune to the constant negativity they receive regardless of whether they win or lose.

If you get told you are worthless and you suck enough times by enough people, sooner or later it will affect your performance.

I was perfectly happy, well not happy with 4-12, but I saw a team that was a few pieces away, mainly a QB. I was looking forward to seeing what Chud and Norv could do with a QB. Bring in another WR, Power Back to go with Baker/Lewis and beef up the Defense. Even though it didn't turn into wins I saw a better team. Injuries were too much at the end of the year but by that time I was in the Lose for higher draft pick camp.

Now we are back to square one. New HC, new OC and probably DC. Are we a 34 or 43 defense? My excitement level went form optimistic to pessimistic with that move.

Well, if you want to call being excessively bitter, classless, and vengeful as being passionate, well have fun with that.

Not the kind of passion I enjoy watching or being part of.

It's not just some fans that are "bitter, classless, and vengeful". It's not even just the local media.

Get this: SI, NFL network, the boston globe, and cbs sports are all saying negative things about the situation in cleveland, and who the browns are after. The link is one of the other threads where dolts are calling those of us that disagree with them "bitter, angry, classless..........." etc.

That would all be well and good if it was about this one incident.. but it's about every incident going back many years... it's cheering injured players, it's booing a 3rd round pick because he's struggling in his 10th game ever in the NFL, it's making up derogatory nicknames for coaches and players...

Look, I get it. This franchise has done more than it's fair share to deserve ridicule over the years and the only way people know to voice that displeasure is to call into radio shows, boo at the stadium, etc.. I get it. I get that every time they do something monumentally stupid it's like ripping the scab off of 1,000 old wounds that have never fully healed... I get it. But I also get that when the media jumps on something as being totally stupid, they are wrong as often as they are right... so I'm willing to let this thing play out before I run out and get my 3 stooges t-shirt or resort to other nicknames or start burning my jerseys... If you think some other way is a better expression of your "passion" then have at it....

Won't shock me if we draft Manziel. Hell, it won't shock me if we trade up. That's because the Browns are a bad team and decisions like that are what bad teams do. They'd rather lure fans into the stadium with narratives, nostalgia and feel good stories then putting a product on the field that would produce wins. It just amazes me the incompetence in all 3 Cleveland teams. The freaking Dolans look like role models for the clowns we have right now.

The vast majority of this fan base going into that second Cincinnati game was pretty positive, no? So this team runs out to a 13 point lead and then has maybe the worst quarter in the history of pro football, and that's OUR fault?

And still, the fans were in a positive environment the next week against Pittsburgh, and once again we got bent over a barrel? Are we supposed to sit around and sing Kumbaya while Big Ben goes 16-1 or whatever it is against us...

You're putting the engine before the carts. The engine is this team being horrible, and what follows are giant waves of negativity.

I will make one final comment and then bail on this conversation because this is where I think your argument fails....

Anybody who has ever been in or witnessed a verbally and psychologically abusive relationship knows how it feels to constantly be told you suck and you aren't good enough by somebody that you really want to make happy. I've seen more than one good person have their self-confidence completely destroyed that way...

It's funny, the Browns are actually a lot like the Marines in a backwards sort of way... the Marines take relatively undisciplined young men and women, break them down from their bad habits and build them up in the Marine image as stronger men and women... we take draft picks who have almost always been successful, break them down and build them back up in our image... losing.

And I suspect this will continue until such a time as we stumble on just the right combination of players and coaches that we can win immediately.....

I'm sorry DC, but no amount of positive thoughts were going to make Brandon Weeden become a HOF QB. As someone else pointed out there was many positive Vibes this season. Coming out of the BYE week, in Cincy we were in the thick of the Division/Playoff hunt. We already beat Cincy and just beat Baltimore before the BYE. And the season went downhill from there.

My final opinion:

I guess there are two kinds of players, the players that will hear they suck and believe it and then there are the Richard Shermans who was told by many his College Coach (Harbough) though he was not going to be a good pro. He decided he was going to prove him wrong and is now one of the best CB in the league.

I wish the Browns had more Sherman type players.

We need more of that, and we need a quarterback or this circus will continue.

Quarterback doesn't solve everything, but it helps everyone, and it buys people time.

The argument could be made that the whole season fell apart in the second quarter of the Bengals game... we had a 13-0 lead then gave up 31 unanswered points in a comedy of errors unlike anything I've ever seen.. and we never recovered.... for the rest of the season. That is one of the reasons I think people have said we are mentally weak.

It's not all on the fans, it's not all on the media, a large chunk of it rests with the players and the coaches and the front office... but there is a culture of losing that envelopes this team like a dense fog and whether you want to admit it or not, the fans are a part of it.

This is where we disagree. If we win then the fans are happy. Did the fans make Mesa give up the game tying run in 97? Did the fans let Elway drive down the field? Did the fans let Jordon Shoot over Ehlo? Did the fans make Lebron lose in Cleveland? Did the Fans give up a 3-1 game lead on Boston in 2007?

The fans are not the reason the Cleveland Browns are a terrible franchise. It's the people running the team, making bad draft picks and changing regimes every other year. The fans are upset because we are bad, we are not bad because the fans are upset.

Eve, just ignore them. They don't want the truth.

Back to Manziel:

Clem, you asked:

Quote:

What could you tell me that would sell him to a skeptic like me?

I value a couple of things above all others in regards to QBs. And I have to tell you that this list has evolved over the last several years due to the fact that the game has evolved.

1. Football IQ. By this, I mean that a QB has to read defenses pre-snap. They put their teams in good situations by calling an audible, making a hot read, or sight adjustment. They know where the blitz is coming from. They recognize tendencies. Think Peyton Manning. Secondly, and even more importantly, is reading coverages post-snap. Teams often disguise their coverages pre-snap and switch to a new coverage at the snap. Intelligent QBs can see what looked to be a Cover 3 and then all of a sudden become a Cover 6 very quickly. This has probably become the most important aspect of being a successful QB. Guys like Rodgers, Luck, P. Manning, Brady, and Brees all excel in this area.

2. Accuracy. These guys can put the ball in the exact right spot. They can lead a receiver. They can throw the back shoulder. They can throw accurately if they are throwing a bullet or throwing w/touch.

3. Play Maker: QBs get pressured. I don't care how good your OL is, you are going to get pressured. There are also times you are facing adverse down and distances. Your defense--in today's NFL is going to give up points and you need to come from behind. You often times need to make plays on 3rd down, at the end of halves, at the end of games. Some guys, like Wilson, Ben, Luck, and Rodgers are always making plays, either by running for the first down, or more importantly, buying time in the pocket to make a play w/their arm.

4. Anticipation: This is where a QB can throw a guy open. They throw it while his head is turned. He can also anticipate when that corner, or more than likely--a safety---is going to break on the ball. They anticipate the blitz. This is a very innate skill and you don't teach it.

5. Leadership/Moxie: These guys inspire the entire team. Did you notice how Green Bay's players stepped it up when Rodgers returned? Did you notice the difference of our players when Hoyer was in as opposed to Weeden?

Well Clem, Johnny Football demonstrated all of those traits in my eyes. He surprised me by how well he read coverages and went through his progressions. His leadership was off the charts. His accuracy was outstanding. Did you see that last tear-drop TD pass he had where the WR did not have to break stride? His play-making ability was off the charts. The announcers even pointed out how he threw w/anticipation.

The kid's got it, Clem.

I hear you about how college is not the NFL, but we can say that about every QB. You know that. Manziel could bust. I said that earlier, but man, that kid answered almost every question I had about him in the Duke game. I already knew his positives, but he really did read coverages. He did go through his progressions. He threw accurately. He was a freaking leader.

Teddy is still my number 1 guy. I respect Steve a lot, but I did not see the accuracy issues that he spoke of.

I have moved Johnny Football up to my # 2 guy.

Bortles is 3rd. He has the prototypical size. He is more mobile than he looks and his arm is okay. He made some bad reads though that concern me.

I do think we will get one of the three guys. If we get Manziel, I hope that we sit him behind Hoyer for at least one year and really work on his mechanics. It's pretty exciting to think that we could end up w/either him or Teddy.

My question about him is can he make the tight difficult throws that have to be made? The NFL is evolving with freak athletes that close space. Can he make the tight throws in the end zone? The answer from what I've seen is no. How good is his deep ball? Can he "throw on a rope?" If be can't, safeties will creep up and neutralize his ability to run. From what I've seen the answer is no. Chucking ducks up to Mike Evans won't work with the big boys. Is he durable? I'm not sure, but I've never seen a running QB that small have success in today's league. Russell Wilson occasionally runs, but he's more of a pocket passer. Alex Smith has all of these same problems and it's why I 100% believe Kansas City will never win a title with him. Alex Smith was a great athlete coming out of Utah too.

Drew Brees is the only QB I've seen that's small and has a relatively below average arm strength have success in today's league.

I disagree and I love Wilson as a QB.

Furthermore, Manziel's arm is probably better than Bortles'. People get too caught up in height.

One more thing, arm strength is way overrated. You can't have a pop gun arm like McCarron, but you don't need a huge arm, especially when you throw w/anticipation and accuracy.

For example.............you take Weeden and I take Manziel. You play w/the same exact offense against the same exact defense as you do and I guarantee that my "team" comes out on top every freaking time.

If Teddy ain't there.........draft Johnny Football!!!!

Oh, and I am just messing w/you. Not really arguing. Just having fun, so don't take it personal. I will save my arguments for the folks who are spewing their hate for the Browns.

I'm gonna have to disagree with almost everything you said except the Weeden comment. That's not fair, Weeden is a complete scrub

Weeden vs Colt Mccoy is a better comparison.

HOF? Really? That's what you are going to go with....

Why not?

Because there is a smidgen of a difference between a guy playing better with confidence and a guy being in the HOF...

No, fan support doesn't automatically mean you win championships... it might mean that your players play with more confidence and play better.. you are taking my point and trying to take it to a drastic extreme...

The fans are not the reason the Cleveland Browns are a terrible franchise. It's the people running the team, making bad draft picks and changing regimes every other year. The fans are upset because we are bad, we are not bad because the fans are upset.

The fans are a part of the culture of the Cleveland Browns.. I do agree that making a bunch of the right moves in a row would fix the problem and the fans would be happy... one of the reasons the franchise has made any number of knee jerk reactions over the years is because of the fans.... Art Modell fired Bill Belichick (all be it after they moved to Baltimore) because the fans hated him and he wanted to appease the fans.... who knows how many bad decisions have been made because guys felt like they had to win immediately or risk having the fans turn on them.... and we just made that worse...

If a below average player is playing with confidence what will that matter? Confidence hasn't been our problem, it's been lack of overall talent especially at the skilled positions.

It's the only way to fix the problem. The Saints are no longer the Aints not because the fans gave the players confidence but because they signed a very good young coach and made a trade for a franchise QB. The 90's Indians because they built a team with an All-Star at every position.

Speaking of Indians, what about them this year? The general feeling around here was they would fall apart again like the previous two years. But despite the lack of fan support for the better part of the year they still made the playoffs. You really think that was fans? Or perhaps getting a real coach? I'm leaning toward Francona.

And to me that is the sign of a terrible front office. You can't listen to the fans. Fans are fans and if you listen to the majority of Browns fans we would of had things like Jim Tressel as coach, Troy Smith drafted in the first round and so on. And the fire Chud crowd was in the very very very minority. Most fans I know thought Chud didn't have that QB and we are in position to draft one so he earned a mulligan this year.

Just take Johnny Football and we'll start winning. As you said in your well thought out post, he has demonstrated every facet of the game necessary to be a solid pro QB. Sure, he could bust. So could any of the other top QBs You can look at draft after draft of QBs who everybody thought had it who turned out not having it...so, you do need to get a little lucky.

Some years back the Colts were more or less in a toss up between drafting Manning or Leif....I'd say they got lucky and SD got unlucky.

It won't. But if 40 players ranging from below average to very good are all playing with more confidence, a 4 win team becomes a 7 win team... it doesn't win championships or put guys in the HOF.. but it wins a couple more games.

And in that same year the Saints defense went from 28th to 13th because the new coach is 100 times better than the old coach? Or perhaps because the defense had new life because they finally believed they could win?... and started playing with confidence.... or maybe the addition of Scott Fujita made the difference...

You seem to think I'm disregarding talent in favor of this nebulous concept of "confidence".... I'm not. Talent is very important, talent is ultimately what gets you in the playoffs and wins championships... Talent is also what ultimately leads to having even greater confidence.... However I won't back away from my stance that confidence is important and fan support is a part of confidence.

You ever see a good golfer who all of the sudden can't make a 3 foot putt or hit the fairway? It's not because they suddenly lost their talent. Ever see a good shooter who suddenly can't make free throws? It's not because they forgot how... When you get it in your head that you can't, it's very hard to overcome that.... When 40 guys on the same team get it in their head that they can't, it's damn near impossible.

I don't disagree with you.. but it's a business, the fans are your customers, they spend the money.. it's very hard to totally ignore them when they are in the stands booing, bringing signs about how you suck, calling into the radio station to say you suck, etc... You don't always have to make the exact change they want, but most owners will make a change... just to look like they are doing SOMETHING to fix the problem...

This whole conversation started because I said this:

Quote:

Winning cures everything. You don't want fans to boo you? Then stop sucking.

If Johnny Manziel comes here and looks like Colt McCoy 2.0 then fans will be upset and boo. If he looks like Russel Wilson 2.0 and takes us to the playoffs then fans will cheer. It's a pretty simple formula.

And I stand by that comment. If you get the talent and the team starts winning the fans will be happy. If you draft Trent Richardson and Brandon Weeden in the first round and 2 years later both are not on the team and the team sucks, well the fans will be unhappy and boo.

The fans will not be happy until they start winning. So either start drafting better or hope the ones you draft have thick skin.

Which just goes to show that even some of those who uphold the firing of Chud fully understand that in reality, it's about the QB.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

No doubt it is about the QB, but the two issues can be separated.

Your comment can be turned around. If it's all about the QB, then what do you care who is coaching the team?

I guess in the end, i don't really care who is coaching unless it is some total fool, and I don't think any of the people being mentioned are that, so it doesn't really matter to me. The fact is we dumped Chud....oh well...bring in the next guy.

The question that still has to be asked is if he had a QB, would he have been fired or would he have won?

Was it the circumstances of not having a QB and a running game that helped lead to the failure or was it actually Chud himself?

We all have to move on. I mean how long did so many fans, myself included, hate Modell but we were still a loyal fan base?

I don't feel this fan base hates this FO. I do believe that a lack of trust has begun.

I hope what ever direction they go in both the QB and HC equals success. That would be the best thing possible for everyone concerned. But I don't think questioning their ability to do so moving forward is out of line.
