Didn't read the entire 100+ posts but to pretty much answer your question...I think most dawgs are stating McDaniels cause that is the PROBABLE of who is coming here and we so love our Browns we wish it to make sense. Not looking at bad and good...looking at the fact that he and Lombardi has had a reputation. I am pretty sure just going on memory and a blurb or two from a poster here n there - so it could be false. But I'm pretty sure McDaniel wanted the GM fired in Denver and have him replaced by Lombardi as his GM of Choice.
Mangini was the only one who got the BB football intelligence references as the next great football mind from that tree. Why it hurt BB so much. Weiss never did anything after he left the Pats. RAC well we know what he did here and he got fired from the Chiefs team that was talented and the worst record. McDaniels had that BB tree of wanting control and cannot blame him as Nolan (Who was a Great D coach) n the GM there were not his choices so that was a job destined for failure.
McD like BB n Mangini is a disciplinarian...that could be a good thing and a bad thing. Football and Discipline does go together. But you have to be a special type of leader like BB n Parcells and Caughlin who have earned the respect from the players to pull it off. Mangini was able to curb it down in his 2nd try with us.
But we are traveling on thin Ice cause this group of young players literally loved their coaches and the schemes that were employed here. They really got into it and thought this was a long term build up and the organization would be here for a long time with continuity and stability - THEY WERE ALL TOLD THIS.
Then the big surprise and such and opposite of what was told to expect. So right now the relationship with team and players is very Fragile. Will McD be able to pull it off.
Back to Why...outside of the obvious choice and I hope all the garbage UDFA rookie help brought in here by Lombardi was not a set up, cause it seemed that Chud was picked before Lombardi came on board - but I won't go there any further but it is on the back of my mind.
We know there is no Big Up n Comer from the college ranks who will think about coming here...Anyone who can write their own revered job in College will not leave it to come to such an UNSTABLE Environment...it was unstable last year so that Kelly wanted no part of it...Imagine this year.
This leaves the ranks of NFL asst. coaches. Chud was about as revered as they come and it didn't work out. I won't go into details on the reasons but lets just say if it is football involved not other theories. They will not go into young Coordinators with no HC experience.
Also our supreme leader and owner of the Browns had one football directive...he wanted an attack 3-4 defense similar to what we have seen from the Steelers...so forget about the big talented name out there Lovie Smith...he wouldn't take the job knowing he couldn't bring in his own philosophy...he's no Tomlin.
I tell you a guy with a lot of class is Nolan...would he want to come here??? I've never seen his name mentioned.
I of course wanted Gruden and he basically laughed at the idea of coming here. Because of the lack of stability displayed...all those who think this one n done was a brave and smart thing. Really underestimate what the entire NFL community really think about it.
So to say our options are limited is a big time understatement. So my guess is when the decision to fire Chud was made - McDaniels via Lombardi was already the choice.
The rest is just sham for the rooney rule. Also they have to wait for the Pats Post season run - Lombardi reveres BB too much to not interfere with his current season.
So to answer why McD...It comes down to WHO ELSE? If they are special more than one team wants them and we are the most undesirable place to go....not cause of the fan base...not cause of the Players...analysts have stated we are one of the most desirable places to go because of those two things. Reality is cause of the FO and their ridiculous ONE n DONE and believe me they listen to what Turner had to say about being shammed about LONG TERM BS and giving the Personnel support of Long Term (UDFA rookies) The Desirable HC candidates simply will not apply here unless its to leverage a contract!
It is the bed this FO has made. Why McD...who else.

spot on EO. The FO has painted themselvs into a corner and Isee no way out. What I fear even more... what if the next HC fails? Ok we dont fire him and have a one and dione scenario again, but do we ax the FO? If we do then what ?We bring in another FO and what do they want? There own man to be coach... so we start over... AGAIN. If JM or whoever the next sucker is fails to produce we are back to stage one, .... stability... where? Haslam, Haslam, Haslam, what hath you wrought? There will be no attorney to get you out of this quandry. And the saddest part you didnt buy me dinner before hand.

If things go really bad AGAIN I believe the only way things may change is if no one shows up to the stadium on game days. This is not likely to happen but it is certainly a way to get an owner or FO's attention by not attending or spending any money on the team.

Well stated. Tough I don';t know if the players loved Chud as much as you say, but that is just a small point that doesn't matter all that much one way or the other.

The guy is considered a good football mind. That is why he is being considered. It would be foolish to not consider him.
Chud was actually considered in that same light.
To me the difference seems like a simple one.
The jury was out on whether Chud could improve a team given no QB and no running game.
Where as, McDaniels already has a track record of showing he couldn't in Denver. And from everything we've seen, he was the one responsible for not having a QB he could win with.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Your post about having limited options makes a lot of sense. But are you sure it isn't because a reporter asked the three stooges question?

Saddly I'm to the point of understanding this :
I have no say in who the Browns Hire as Head Coach, there gonna hire who they want and fire him when they want, they havent called me in 51 years, I'm not waiting bye the phone for them or faith hill to call anymore.
I dont want Daniels because to me he looks like a spoiled whinny little pain in the behind, better than the rest coaches, But thats just me, maybe I'm totally wrong, I probebly dead wrong, but to me he dosent look like a coach, I want a coach that looks like Ditka, Lombardi, Maddon...not a Harvard pretty boy...I really dont want a re-tread coach, no matter how many times we click our heals and tell ourselves he's like Biliceck his 2nd time will result in Super Bowls and cute little puppies an warm days with the smell of daisies in the air....common are we really to the point of believing what this media is selling
I dont want Daniels because we've tried that NE connection already and it didnt work, lets move on...We can and must do better, but whom ever it is, I still no a couple things, Faith hill still hasnt called and the Borwns wont let me select our next coach
I can't disagree with this but I'm not going to pretend that it matters to me. Just win games and improve the team and I'll be happier. I won't be contented until we make the playoffs and win a Super Bowl, but it'll be a move in the right direction.

I don';t know if the players loved Chud as much as you say
Maybe Love is a miss understood term...lets say they so believed in the system. We had Turner and Horton...I can only imagine compared with the last regime their classroom sessions were intense and our players learned which was part of the believing.
Oh don't get so caught up on the term n excuse for the firing of couldn't finish...that's sort of why I have a sour taste still in my mouth...cause it wasn't a lack of coaching I saw it as a lack of personnel. LB, DB depth and a starting QB...Back up QBs do not have the trait of finishing are else they wouldn't be Back Ups.
But all our depth on the D failures was in UDFA not in 3 or 4 more investments of veterans - IF THEY TRULY thought of this as short term...but the coaches said Ok as they had to put out there guys like a Erasmus or something as a LB and Tank Carder as a starter and Poyer who was picked up from waiver wires and Poser who came from the practice squad as a UDFA rookie...We had no depth at Safety, CB, ILB all young all UDFA or released 7th rounders.
Offense - we lost Hardesty and Lewis, instead of scouring and doing magic to bring another here...they instead traded our Lone n starting RB for the LONG TERM INVESTMENT of a First round draft pick. To replace and fill in at the RB position we got Rainey from our Practice Squad to back up for McGahee and over the hill RB who was on his couch. Rainey got hurt (pulled groin) and was released and replaced with Fozzy from Chargers Practice Squad...a UDFA rookie...All the moves we made were to strictly go with youth and make the team stronger not for 2013...but for the future. The players who were here loved the Coaching, The Preparation and yes I give them props cause that is why we had like the lead or tied at the half for what 13-14 games. So I don't buy this poor coaching. Finish? ST, Refs didn't help much and the lack of a QB who could finish and lack of veteran depth. Took the majority of the football explanation and I was pointing this out well before the thought of Chud possibly leaving.
So maybe not a Man Crush on Chud although I hear they did like him as a person and leader. But more so on the structure and preparation of the system is what they LOVED/BELIEVED...choose whichever word moves you.
I know some will state how come we didn't adjust like the other teams did in the 2nd half. Well I'll give you one example....our weaknesses were obvious - almost all went and exposed Robertson the 2nd half (just one of several - just chose this one cause it showed up a lot n easy to see) What possible adjustment could we make? We had no Nickel Dime Safety to take over those coverages instead of the LB who always was seen chasing that man as he wasn't too far off but never the less off. If we blitzed more it only exposed it more. Once teams pretty much abandon the Running game and we had to put in our Nickel and Dime players. We regressed big time.
JMHO cause of storm its so hard for me to post as each submit or Pure Football click its takes like 5 minutes for my internet to respond??? Hope its just the storm.
So I put in a lot more than the subject at hand...apologies.

Does that make him a quality head coach prospect?
You started a new thread to ask a question. You had previously asked me that question in another thread. I didn't answer the first time because I didn't believe you really wanted a logical answer. Well, you started this thread, so I decided to answer. I gave you logical reasons.
You asked me a series of questions about Mettenberger recently. I answered them to the best of my ability. You ignored my response because you didn't hear what you wanted to hear.
That's twice in a row where you asked me questions. You didn't want to hear my answers. Your mind is made up and you simply want to discredit anyone who has an opposing view. No problem.
I'll remember not to make the same mistake again.

Maybe so. But per league rules McDaniels nor the Browns can announce if he were to be hired until the Pats are finished with the postseason. So to me it's somewhat meaningless seeing that the Browns can't come out and say, "he's our guy, he's hired!" I think some reports are assuming the silence by each party is perceived as a cooling of interest.

Why not? Do you think it really matters? We've been through coach after coach and it's all the same thing.... BAD football. Cleveland is the place coaching careers come to DIE. To Josh McDaniel's I would say.... RUN FOR YOUR LIFE! Unless you want to end any future chance of coaching a team, don't even take Banners call. If you do.....you'll be sorry! One two Banners coming for you, three four better lock your door, five six grab your crucifix....
If they hire McDaniels it shows one thing....they planed on this the whole time. They tried to hire Kelly last year and got left at the altar and just couldn't find anyone "Belichick" enough. They inquired about McDaniels and he said "maybe next year". So they hired Chud and set about working toward 2014. If by accident Chud had won 8 or 9 games, then they might have stuck with him, but anything less than a huge upswing and they'd be ready to take McDaniels up on the "next year" deal.... Chud was supposed to be a feel good hire so Fans would buy tickets while they planned for 2014.

And for anyone thinking McDaniels is another Belichick? There IS no "other" Belichick. He is a unique and UN-copyable coaching savant. We've already been through two of his henchmen and neither has impressed. The NFL needs to face one fact. Belichick himself is the driving force in New England. Hiring his underlings won't result in Bill like results. Time after time, this is shown to be true. Belichick was born to be a football coach.

jc..
let's look at some of Belichicks Cronys.
His Cleveland Staff Ozzie Newsome - Cleveland’s director of pro personnel in 1994. Now the GM of the Ravens - Considered successful Scott Pioli - Scouting assistant for Cleveland - Then NE VP of player personel, then GM of KC. - Considered successful Mike Tannenbaum - Player personel assitiant for Cleveland, has been with the New York Jets since 1997 - Considered successful Jim Schwatrz - College scout in Cleveland, Bef Assist in Baltimore, Detroit HC - Mild Success. Kirk Ferentz - Offensive Line Coach in Cleveland, Iowa head coach since 1999 - Considered Successful Nick Saban - DC in Cleveland, Alabama HC now - Considered Successful Eric Mangini - Ball Boy in Cleveland, went on to HC NYJ and Cleveland - Mild success Phil Savage - Def Assist/Scout in Cleveland - Baltimore Scout - Succesful? Eh... George Kokinis - Scout with Cleveland, Balitmore Director of Pro personel - successful? Baltimore took him back so I'm guessing he has some value.
Now let's the non-Cleveland Cronys. Romeo Crennel, Josh McDaniels, Charlie Wies, Al Groh
What I see is those that were with Belichick in Cleveland during the foundation of his coaching career, and learned it from the ground up have had a greater chance/rate of success than those that come into his system after implementation.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

unless you are Romeo who got another chance as HC of the Chiefs or Butch who got to be HC of UNC and is on the list to be HC of U-Miami again. or Chud who is also on that U-Miami list and may be the favorite or Shurmur who was OC of the highest scoring Eagle team of all time or Chris Palmer who has been OC or QB coach of Texans, Cowboys, Giants, and Titans
Mangini is the only HC who has not coached again. He chose a low-stress, high paying ESPN job and now is a consultant/coach/scout for the 49ers (breaking down opposing defenses to see what portions of their offensive playbook would work best).

I do not consider Pioli or Tannebaum "successful" when they were on their own and had power. Ferentz has no recent NFL track record and Mangini and Schwartz were very FAR from a "mild success" when they had power. They sucked and failed for the most part. Mangini didn't even get any HC or even DC offers as far as I know. So that leaves Ozzie as the only successful guy, which makes it that much harder to swallow considering his background.
Bottom line should be: If you can't get Bellichick, don't even bother looking at anyone else of his "tree", as the chances of those guys slipstreaming off his success are much greater than those guys being competent of their own. Looks like Belly has a knack for surrounding himself with "yes-men", who he can give a feeling of being great and when those hacks get the power they want yes-men too, but of course they lack the competency to "make them feel great" as they're too preoccupied with showing off their greatness and lead through "fear". Pretty much the definition of incompetent blowhards and looking at those names it fits to most of them with maybe the exception of Crennel, but Mangini, Schwartz, Saban and McD all qualify. All wannabes who have a serious lack of social skills and think they're much smarter than the rest.
Of course that's my opinion, if you don't believe me, I'd ask you to take a couple of minutes of time and ask any Broncos fan what he thinks of McD…or Dolphins fans what they think of Saban..or Lions-Schwartz
I'm sure you don't want any of them on the Browns when they have ended their rants, lol

I will mention that Saban's time with the Dolphins is extremely under-rated. It was the FO/team-doctor's that bypassed Drew Brees (and started the rift that led him back to college). Also, look at Miami both immediately before and after he left. Noone got as much out of that team as he did.
I mean, he's a dirty scumbag, but he's a good football coach.

I thinkthis list just shows that bellichek knows where to slot people and how much power / authority to give them, The fact that others felt they could do more is on them not BB.
Look at the list the one that srikes me as the most obvious:
Mangini - ball boy, yep about wheere he belongs...

This brings up a good, but unrelated point.
Any of you guys that have been around for awhile, which tree do you think is best, Parcells or Walsh?

Yes, he did.
Hasn't he been fairly successful
I'd say so. Especially if you consider Tannenbaum successful.
I mean he easily won the Julio trade. He's a top 5 WR and we ended up with Brandon Weeden. Advantage: Atlanta.
Just remember when you are against trading up, or for trading back, that you could always end up with Brandon Weeden.

This brings up a good, but unrelated point.
Any of you guys that have been around for awhile, which tree do you think is best, Parcells or Walsh?
(not an easy question)
the Paul Brown tree (which includes Walsh and his branches)

Didn't see this. Let me be the first to say "YES!" I was never a fan of McDaniels, and I am glad that he will not be coming to Cleveland. I do have a feeling that this job search may take a different route, again, than the front office intended. New England Patriots' Josh McDaniels takes himself out of running for Cleveland Browns job, source confirms | cleveland.com http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2014/01/new_england_patriots_oc_josh_m.htmlCLEVELAND, Ohio -- New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has taken himself out of the running for the Browns head coaching vacancy, a source confirmed for cleveland.com. McDaniels, the Canton native, interviewed with the Browns on Saturday. His decision was first reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter. A day earlier, McDaniels told reporters on a conference call that he loves his job with the Patriots and declined to elaborate on his interest in the Browns job. “We met and that’s about all there is at this point,” McDaniels, 37. "Nothing, nothing further.” McDaniels is preparing the Patriots for their meeting against the Colts on Saturday night in the divisional playoffs. “I appreciate the question, and I understand it,” said McDaniels, a Canton native. “I know that’s something that comes up each time this year for other coaches. The opportunities are certainly flattering if they come up. That being said, I am going to try to keep my focus on the Colts and our preparation this week. Like I’ve said in the past, I’m fortunate to have the job I have, and I love being here. I love doing what I’m doing. Each opportunity that comes along is a little different and I’m going to leave it at that and continue to put my effort and attention into the Colts this week.” McDaniels is one of the three NFL assistants the Browns have interviewed. The others are Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles. The Browns have also received permission to interview Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase, but he's declined overtures from the Browns and Vikings until the Broncos are out of the playoffs. McDaniels has long been on the radar of Browns general manager Mike Lombardi, and has also long been admired by Browns CEO Joe Banner. The Browns have also requested permission to talk to Vanderbilt coach James Franklin, and are reportedly interested in Auburn coach Gus Malzahn, who lost to Florida State in the BCS national championship game Monday night. The Broncos will face the Chargers Sunday in Denver. “I told both teams that were interested in me that I appreciated it and I was going to wait until after our season had concluded,'' he said. "They were great about it. They said they appreciated me being upfront and honest about it, and I thought that was the best decision for what we are trying to accomplish with our team.” Gase said if he decides to interview, it's because he feels prepared for the job. “If it comes down to it, where I actually do get a chance to interview for it—I wouldn’t interview if I didn’t think I was ready for that role. But right now I have tofocus on what we’re doing for the playoffs and it’s a one-game elimination tournament and I have to make sure my role is prepared for.” Gase, 35, was the first candidate that surfaced the day after the Browns fired Rob Chudzinski.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/201...eveland-search/Report: McDaniels withdraws name from Cleveland search Posted by Darin Gantt on January 8, 2014, 2:03 PM EST Josh McDaniels, Tim Tebow AP Usually when college coaches start taking their name out of consideration for jobs, it means it’s been offered to someone else. But while we don’t know if the Browns are close to making a hire, we do know who won’t be their next head coach. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has “withdrawn from consideration” for the job. Many presumed McDaniels to be the front-runner, based on his relationship with Browns General Manager Mike Lombardi. And this would sadly end the hopes of a McDaniels-Tebow reunion in Cleveland, which would have been so perfect on so many levels. But the Browns have cast a wide net in their search for Rob Chudzinski’s replacement, with college coaches joining some of the usual suspect coordinators and off-the-beaten-path position coaches (such as Packers quarterbacks coach Ben McAdoo) on their list. Hmmmm, not sure if this is a good thing or bad thing.......

This picture should be blown up to movie theater size and put in every hallway and every room of the Browns facility until they make the playoffs.
It's equivalent of people trying to lose weight putting a picture of a fat person on their fridge.
Just when you think you are going to go into that meeting room, or weight room, or practice field and half-ass it, BOOM, Brandon Weeden is there to give you the Brandon Weeden face.

My guess is that he's got some under the table agreement with Bob Kraft and probably even BB himself, that he gets the job when Bill walks away, which I think is coming in the next few years.
The more I think about it, I'd be willing to bet that thing ends like the 90's Bulls where Brady and BB are gone all at once, and McDaniels takes over with Mallet, whom he has been grooming for years.
And we'll all be there to watch that dumpster fire start.

That's good, but who else is on the Paul Brown tree?
When you think about it, everybody who is on the Bellichick tree is actually from Parcells.
It would probably take a couple hours to do the research and break it all down.

That would make a fantastic book.

Ok so much for the 90-99% odds that McD was our new head coach...as stated I thought he is NFL intelligent wasn't sure if he could get the players behind him though. Maybe college is the way to go...but with his Cleveland Browns as a kid background along with Lombardi he might have been the best we could have gotten. Who knows.
Thought Stoops sounded excited about interviewing here as he also is from the area...but hear he wasn't being considered.
Is the One n done by the New Owner/FO killing our chances? I'll talk about it I guess in the HC search thread...as this thread should be done. This means there is more merit to that article by another site who stated McD isn't coming cause he is the heir apparent in NE...the thing that confuses me is BB was the heir apparent to Parcells w/Jets and he left right at the last moment to the Pats.
But if this validates that article...NOBODY WANTS TO COACH THE BROWNS regardless how good the situation is with 5 Pro-Bowlers one Alt. 4 All pro 1st or 2nd teamers. Mega picks 3 in the top 36 and a ton of Cap room for FA...but NOBODY WANTS TO COME HERE was the jist of the article...now coming true with this McD ain't interested in our job. Scratch his name.

That news should have 75% of the board eating crow.

Yes!
Now things really heat up.
I suspect many of you will probably question whether the FO required him to pick up their choice for D Coordinator and that may have turned him off.
Or, it could be a face saving deal, and he wasn't going to be hired.
Either way, we are now looking at?
Franklin Stoops (maybe back in the hunt?) Malzahn (If he wanted it I think he might get the job. Suspect he probably is happy where he's at.)
All college guys.
Its time for someone to break down Franklin. What are his strengths? Weaknesses. Who is the guy? How could he possibly be considered good enough to coach the Browns? Who would be on his staff? All handpicked cronies of Banner and Lombardi? Yikes.
