True, with that said he's won his games too. He could go out choosing to help a very young duo at corner, 'pass down his knowledge' so-to-say and still be key aspect of the defense, likely step in and instantly be voted captain - that may also be intriguing to him as' well...

Bailey can do all that. . . and be on a team that has a chance to win the Super Bowl (something he has never done).

I would say there is a 0% chance he signs with us.

What I find amusing is I get ripped for recommending signing Reed "because he is finished" but signing Champ is a good idea? A guy that played 5 games last year, and has never played safety is a great idea. Denver has a huge need for a S but still cut Champ. With their needs in mind, if moving Bailey to S was such a great idea then why didn't they just rework his deal and move him to S?

Champ hasn't been cut by multiple teams..

And even with declining skills, I doubt if it wasn't a cap thing if they would have cut him at all..

I don't want to sign Bailey, but he was a very good corner in 2012. Reed has been injured/washed up for several years.

Teams are allowed to start talking to other team's free agents today. Just a heads up.

Denver had 19 mil in cap space before releasing Bailey. Plenty of space to rework a deal if they thought a move to FS would be worth it. Denver had a very difficult time at the position last year after trying and failing to move Q. Jammer from CB to FS.

Who votes on the Pro Bowl?

Fans who go off of name recognition and players who vote for guys who have made it before. (Coaches also vote, but they probably just let interns do it for them.)

Reed is most definitely washed up.

Did you watch him play this year?

I was responding to your Champ was a very good player in 2012. Reed was equally as good a player in 2012.

And yes I did see Reed play last year. He struggled in Houston, as did the whole team, but played well in NY with Rex in a defensive scheme that would be similar to what we run.

I was pointing out the hypocrisy and the failed logic that when I point to Reed as an option if we miss out on the top FA safeties to fill the role a washed up Bart Scott would have filled its met with much criticism but then people are saying we should go after a washed up Champ and have him change positions in a scheme he has never been in people are like oh yeah we should do it. He would be a great mentor to our CBs. They are the same player, only one has been a FS and one never has.

Reed was not an equally good player. He made the Pro Bowl on reputation. And he tried to get his head coach fired.

Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports that the Giants receiver, listed as the No. 21 free agent on the PFT Hot 100, is willing to consider a one-year contract, which would give him a chance to prove that the last season or two were aberrations — and which would give him another crack at the open market in 2015.

I would be all about Nicks on a one year deal. I wouldn't sign with the Browns if I were Nicks though. I would go somewhere where I could at least have a chance at being the #1 wide receiver.

Maybe. He'd probably get a lot more double teamed as a 1st WR instead of here where he'd be a #2. Is it better to be Reggie Wayne or Chad Johnson?

Gordon is going to get the ball a ton in Shanahan's system. I'm sure if Nicks takes a one year deal he would like to go to a place where he is going to be able to put up numbers (the Broncos to replace Decker?).

This is a little confusing and irritating.

It’s still early, but the Browns haven’t called Jairus Byrd

Jairus Byrd
AP

Sometimes the early phone calls in the legal tampering period matter, and sometimes they don’t.

But if there was a surprise among the calls not made, it might be that the Browns didn’t check in with Bills safety Jairus Byrd yet.

According to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Browns haven’t touched base with his representatives as of early Sunday afternoon.

Some level of interest in Byrd was assumed by many, given the success he had under now-Browns coach Mike Pettine last year, and the Browns’ potential vacancy with T.J. Ward hitting the market.

There’s still plenty of time for them to get in if they want in, but so far other teams have expressed more interest, or at least made more phone calls.

Or maybe Byrd's attitude last year turned Pettine off. Maybe they have someone other than Byrd in mind as a free agent. Maybe they like a guy like Bademosi or Poyer ....... or maybe they might even have a guy or 2 in mind in the draft.

It is so hard to tell when a new group comes in, especially when it's a new HC and GM ..... because there is no background to look at as a benchmark for what they might do.

I do think that intelligence will be highly prized at S in Pettine's defense.

Yes, in Shanahan's system the QB is instructed to ignore any WR who is not listed as #1 on the depth chart -- even if they are wide open.

Or maybe the disparity in WR yardage (between WR1 and WR2) in Shanahan's system is affected by the fact that for a number of years, he had the most dominant WR #1 in the game (Andre Johnson) and exactly zero other talent at WR on his team?

Lots of maybes, and really neither of them are outta the realm of possibility. One has to actually ponder on the attitude part. Big money for when you see a player's true identity... that could be a deal breaker and Pettine would know it best seeing it in practice and every single game...

A lot of things are possible.

This is the time of year where if you state something enough, and enough pick up that conversation and carry it, then anything can become truth.

Byrd used to play for Pettine + Byrd being a FA + Ward being a FA somehow came to equal 'the Browns are going hard after Byrd'.

Meanwhile...what if Pettine didn't like Byrd at all? What if Byrd wants to play for a winner?

If I were a guy who could command good money from a contender, I'd probably take that over great money for a loser. If we're talking about a place like Cleveland, the money would have to be stellar.

I don't think we did a bad job with FA's last year. We more or less centralized it, and overspent a bit, but that's what you do in FA. You just want to be reasonable about it.

At this stage, I'm more concerned about our systems than what players we acquire. The Browns have looked so inept in that regard over the years. Great franchises build systems, and plug players into it. Not the other way around.

I'm not saying it's a move I'd endorse, but I wouldn't be shocked to hear us calling about Antonio Cromartie.

One other thing to consider is that maybe Byrd didn't like the weather in Buffalo, and the weather in Cleveland isn't that far off. He's a California kid, from San Diego, so that is yet another potential factor.

In the end ...... who knows? It's all guesswork until something actually happens ....... and even then it could still be a bunch of guesses.

Wasn't ever the same after his ACL injury. I bet ten bucks he'll try to make a "comeback" at some point, especially when he's borderline needing to file bankruptcy.

Report, Jarius Byrd looking for 9 million per season:

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/03/10/report-jairus-byrd-looking-for-9-million-per-season/

Big money...

Could only find one other contract status for a top caliber FS.. Eric Weddle of the Chargers signed for $40 million over 5 years with $19 million guaranteed back in 2011... That's $8 million a year and that was 3 years ago...

So I'm thinking if Byrd really is one of the two or three best in the league, $9 million a year is probably about right.

Ian Rapoport @RapSheet

Players expected to be changing teams: Jared Allen, Branden Albert, Jared Veldheer, Rodger Saffold, Arthur Jones, James Jones.

Hmm, no TJ Ward or Byrd on that list, so I guess the Browns are at least still negotiating with TJ, which I hope they do. If we don't have one of Ward or Byrd on the roster in a week, then I'd consider that the first offseason fail. Creating an additional need despite 50mil of cap available would be a bad start.

The person quoted "very serious" so obviously that must mean it's 100% true, LOL

But really, next to nothing in terms of advancing talks with TJ. Supposedly there haven't been ANY talks with Byrd. It makes the Whitner situation believable.

I get that he is from Cleveland and all... but seriously. People gotta let this rest. He would cost as much as Ward, he is the same type of player as ward, and I don't think he is as good of a football player as Ward

I don't think the dots are being connected because of the Cleveland connection with Whitner. I think there is real interest (at least us to him).

Whitner would be cheaper than Ward. He is older and not as good.

Totally over my head until this comment ha ha ha. It was a quick copy and paste off my Facebook wall. Maybe if there was a little singing, there would then be a little signing? haha

*EDIT*
