So we want an older and just as expensive lesser version of Ward. I know Vers doesn't like Ward, but I don't even think he would be okay with this.

The only way signing Whitner makes sense is if it is on the cheap and we still sign Byrd.

Here's one for you. The Buccanneers are expected to cut Revis.

Thanks. One thing I picked up is that he revealed he understands that "value" isn't defined by what you think you should pay a player. It is determined by what you have to pay a player. As the cap increases every year, the numbers you, I and everyone else think are good value become undervalued figures. The CBA dictates we have to spend the money, and these 2nd contract guys is exactly where it is designed to be spent rather than on rookies.
Prices are going up folks. As Ray said, guys you thought might be 2-3-4 million a year guys are now going to be 4-5-6 million a year players.

That may be the case and that's why we should have done more last offseason. Guys like Munnerlyn, G.Schwartz, Dansby and any decent CB will demand 2-3-4 times the money and years committment compared to last season and the cap did NOT jump up by 50%. What a waste of resources.
Either way, it will limit us signing more starter caliber FA or re-signing our own, if the numbers rise, so money value DOES still matter. More cap means nothing, if the salaries rise too, it's still the same game, as in: you still need to find good bang for your buck.
Throwing 16mil at Revis, as we're rumored to be "interested", would be a waste or a lateral move at best, because it would pretty much guarantee Haden not being re-signed and I doubt he gets close to that next offseason.
If you can find a guy at 2-3mil to do the job as good as the 4-5mil guy, that's value....and it happens EVERY offseason, we're just never the team who sign those guys.
Let's say we sign Dansby, also been rumored on nfl.com, to the same 5-6mil as DQ, that's value (compared to market), even though it's a lot of money and 3 times what he got a year ago when he was a year younger to boot. The best value short and mid term would have been to have signed him last season though....that's my point: if you define "value" by going standard, that's a good start, but you're already behind the curve. You need to find the talent and potential before it breaks out and gets a fat paycheck, those guys are there in every FA, it's just that they're never signed by the Browns
Here's the Dansby link: http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap2000000...s-browns-titans
"NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday on NFL Network's "NFL Total Access" that the Cleveland Browns and Tennessee Titans are in the running for Dansby, in addition to the Cardinals.
The Arizona Republic reported that the Cardinals have offered a two-year contract worth between $10 million and $12 million. Though it's a substantial step up from the one-year, $2.25 million contract he settled for a season ago, Dansby is still expected to test the market starting Tuesday.
Dansby's patient approach could be well worth it. The Indianapolis Colts recently signed inside linebacker D'Qwell Jackson to a four-year, $22 million deal that includes $11 million guaranteed.
Dansby, 32, is coming off a season in which he proved himself to be a superior player to Jackson. Now comes the hard part: finding a team as generous as the Colts."

I understand you need bang for your buck. It's fine if you don't like a player. I am cool with that. We all have opinions on those matters. It just seems you are more concerned with what some of these guys are making and why you would shy away from them.
It's the new going rate. It isn't going to change. If you want to sign somebody, it's going to be for more than you expected. Lot's of teams are having to throw big money around.

Peen Understand and agree what you are saying.
But it won't be like this all the time it will be predicated on how many teams have Cap Room. Last year it was a short list - This year it seems most teams have room to play...errr pay lol
So probably the graph will gradually go up but there will be a blip downward year or two along the way. Possibly those are the years to make more play at FA???
We'll see how that develops, usually by now there are several big name signings...I don't see it yet. Unless it didn't start yet...then Never Mind
Defense wins championships. Watson play your butt off! Go Browns! CHRIST HAS RISEN! GM Strong! & Stay safe everyone!

No doubt it will level off some, but the whole reason for the new deal was to take money away from rookies and put it in the hands of veteran players. That is what we are seeing.
The superstars get theirs...those aren't the guys we are talking about...where we will see the biggest spike is with the "good" player. Mr. average to slightly less than average NFL starter.
