Does anyone know who first choice was?

I just landed a job 5 months ago where my employer had a candidate identified and I interviewed and blew them away.

You may have a first choice but until you talk to them they are still mostly unknown.

Could be the case here.

I would consider Pettine the first choice... he was the first person they offered the job too as far as I have heard.

He was not the first interviewed, unless we are using that as the criteria to define first choice, can you imagine if we hired the first person we interviewed without l;ooking at other candidates? Oh boy was fan that would have been.

Mike Pettine's first interview was barely a week ago. I don't know that qualifies as 'some time ago'.

Who were those guys? How do you know they were desired more than Pettine by the Browns?

Just as long as he's not a number two I am okay with the hire.

Well, McDaniels and Gus Malzahn were the guys heavily speculated about when Chud was fired.

You are right Vers, I have no idea if that was legit. I had no inside knowledge. A few guys declined to even interview with the team and others withdrew their names from consideration fairly quickly.

This I do know, the Browns didn't win many games, but they hung 37 on the Bills to get one of their wins. Were the Bills even in the top half of the league in defense?

Great hire, the guy I wanted. Exactly what we need in a coach. This is going to be good. Think Bill Cower.

He said it during the presser. Never concerned whether he was the first choice or not. I believe it was a specific question to him also.

14 of those points came when the Bills defense wasn't even on the field. I don't know how you can attribute those to Pettine's defense.

...and now look up how long it took other teams from the first interview to their official hire...and how many other candidates they considered and interviewd in between. They also didn't have the America's next top model "finalist" showdown to make the farce complete.

Look, I'm ok with Pettine, but it's quite obvious that our FO had no clear plan or if they did, could not pull it off. That is somewhat concerning. Feel free to feel differently

Like I said, it is nice to stop by and see the rose colored glasses. If you weren't die hard optimists for the team, you would have tied blocks to your ankles and jumped in the lake.

I hope this works. It just feels like he is Mr. Right Now and not Mr. Right.

j/c Here we frickin' go again. Nothing about this hire excites me. It's yet another situation where we're supposed to hope that a rookie coach with no experience somehow will turn us into a winner. Same story, different year. Seriously, does anyone think the players are excited about coming back next season under this new rookie staff? Yep. Johnny Football or Derek Carr are going to lead us to the promised land. This is depressing.

Well, we did have a punt return for a TD, a defensive TD, and other long returns that gave us a very short field in that game.

Buffalo was 10th in yards allowed last year. They were among the league leaders in sacks and picks.

His Jet defenses were always in the top 10.

He has run both a 3-4 and a 4-3. He said he believes in making the scheme fit the talent rather than the other way around.

We'll see.........

Next season (2014), the team goes 7-9. We hear how the team has made substantial growth. We need to get over the hump. We have to be patient, great things are coming.

Then (2015), the team returns to form and we finish 5-11. We fire Pettine. We start over.

The cycle has happened over and over.

I thought it was optimistic since that is two more wins than any of the last 3 coaches ever managed.

You make it sound like I should care what other teams have gone in regards to their HC searches and hires.

I think that they did have a plan and they followed it. They intended to interview many candidates and they said, from the start, that there wasn't a time limit on the search.

I know you make up a lot of stuff, but really, you should be able to better than that.

Am I making something up?

Benjamin's punt return TD and Ward's pick six were somehow the Bills' defense fault?

More sour grapes and untrue statements from DJ.

It looks to me that they did have a plan. Haslam said that they would interview a lot of candidates and be very thorough. He said they would take their time and hire the best guy for the team. It certainly appears that is what they did.

Can you imagine the uproar if they would have hired a guy w/in two days after firing Chud?

J/C. Keep in mind that first choice to interview doesn't necessarily lead to first choice to hire. That's the point of interviewing multiple candidates. I think the car analogy above works well.

Not sure this will happen but generally when they have a live presser, they post it within 24 hours or so.. It should be up by tomorrow at this time.

No, you are not making up anything.

The Browns have had 2 winning seasons since 1999. For the 8th(?) time, since 1999 a new HC is putting together their staff and we are sold promises of a better tomorrow.

I do not share your optimism. Has Pettine been a HC at any level?

The Browns Front Office might as well have been blindly throwing darts at a wall. We have no idea if Pettine will succeed, but history does not favor him.

plan? What Plan? They should have hired the first person they talked to that would prove he was their first choice... we ALL know in life

We marry the first girl we date
We buy the first car we test drive
we move into the first house we look at and never move out
when always get that job on the first interview

geez, talk to other candidates... idiots

Maybe he'll give Bernie a call? Truth be told, he might be a big help in film study of possible new QBs.

I doubt you recall this... when I first joined the board (the original board), Tim Couch was the QB. There was reason for optimism... especially after Butch Davis's first season. I could be jovial - happy because the future looked bright.

Then... the Cleveland economy created an industry... Factory of Sadness. The Factory has been an amazing display in futility.

Every QB drafted is rationalized to finally be "the one".
