The Steelers are a complete mess with the cap and will continue to be a mess for the forseeable future. They keep making decisions with their heart instead of their head (although cutting Woodley, who has been unproductive, is the right move).
That is all fine with me.

I'm glad Pittsburgh has cap problems, but I can't knock their approach. They have a Championship QB and they've sensed a "window" the last few years. I think it makes sense to go for it 100% when you have that crucial piece and supporting cast.
Its really hard to keep a good roster and pay a Franchise QB (Baltimore, New Orleans) so they should push it while they can. Plus, when Ben goes, his salary number goes with him. When their QB window closes, they'll clear cap in a year or 2.

With the amount of guarantees and the rest of the numbers in terms of talking contracts of franchise qb's these days - becoming impossible unless they're willing to reconstructure on down the road. Most teams gotta let a lot of good players walk bc they got too much invested into their QBs... the words "cap casualty" will get more and more common as the more and more bloated these QB contracts get.

Yep. Seattle and San Fran have benefited b/c they have their guys on the rookie scale. Probably the same with PIT and Ben's first Super Bowl. They struck gold in the draft and were able to keep a great cast. Even signed big name FAs last 2 years.
The Seahawks and 49ers know the pay day is coming, both teams are already making moves to prep themselves.

Lots of older names out there; this might be a changing-of-the-guard kinda season at CB. A lot of those names will get a gig, but it's looking like it's going to be a buyer's market.

I think that episode right there pretty much guarantees that Cromartie won't be in a Browns uniform in 2014.

Doesn't anyone remember what Parcells used to call a WR name Terry Glenn (Ohio State) in New England.. He referred to him as "her" and "she" a lot. Glenn ended up playing for him in Dallas a few years later

This all started because someone said that we would sign Cromartie because he played under Pettine.

Revis is either getting traded or cut. Adam Schefter, Twitter Revis and Pettine supposedly have a good relationship. Revis thrived while Pettine was his defensive coordinator with the Jets. The Bills tried to get Revis last year when Pettine was their defensive coordinator. Am I missing something? Go get this guy!!!! Pay him his $16 million he is due this year and try and restructure next year. None of his contract is guaranteed.

I love Revis. Still the best in the league, IMO. The Bucs just played a heavy zone scheme instead of letting Revis shut down his man.
A Revis-Haden combo would allow for some wonderfully exotic blitzes from Pettine and O'Neil.
I just don't know if it is economically feasible, although I imagine it could be worked out somehow.
Probably a pipe dream, but a fun one!

He went to the pro bowl and proved a lot of people wrong, including myself, coming back from reconstructed knee surgery... why are they shopping him? Are the Bucs that packed at cornerback or something?

Lovie runs a tampa 2. It utilizes a zone specialist CB mostly. No reason to have the best man cover CB in the league for cap reasons.

Wouldn't that be awesome. If they are going to cut him and get nothing- I guess a seventh rounder (there are seven rounds right???) would get the job done. We have the cap space. He could teach Haden a few tricks. It might be a one year thing, but it would be fun....

I'd do that in a heartbeat, and ask him to restructure in a way that allows us to frontload his deal and extend him at relatively comfortable numbers for the next several years.
Then, get Byrd to play center field behind Revis & Haden.

Y'all are crazy...we don't NEED Haden or Revis covering WR2, that's insane and a waste of ability and resources. Revis will cost a flat 16mil in every season through 2018. That means that Haden will be gone next offseason OR we have to cut/deal Revis as the Bucs do now, which would make a trade for ANY top 4 rounds pick look stupid. Only way I consider him is if we get him for a 4th or lower (or, even better, after being cut) and right after trade Haden for a top 50 pick in the upcoming draft. That might be worth it...on paper. Don't ask the locker room what they'd think of this Madden-stuff though. Might as well trade Mack too and let Ward walk and start another rebuild  Long story short: It sure would be exciting to have both Haden and Revis on teh same team, but we're not a Revis away from winning it all

Oh, I agree with your points. I want an upgrade at CB2 as much as anyone, since it would automatically upgrade CB3 with Skrine moving into the slot, BUT we can accomplish that MUCH cheaper and WITHOUT future repercussions (Haden would be GONE no later than 2016, probably a franchise tag-trade next offseason).
We have 50mil of cap. Revis would eat ~33% of that AND clog up future space since we would trade for his deal too, which I'm sure he won't be willing to take a paycut from. He eats up 16mil...every season through 2018. The only good thing about his contract is that there are no guaranteed $, which means we could cut him at any time without a cap hit or dead money.
I'd be on board, IF Farmer goes all nuts on the table this offseason and signs Dansby AND Byrd on top of it. That would cost around 30mil of the 50mil cap and would give us a killer-D on paper at least. Franchise tag Haden next offseason and keep this D intact for 2 seasons.
I have to admit this would at least send a shock around the league and probably a push of much needed excitement for Browns fans, but it'd be a boom or bust scenario. If they can pull it off, I'm on board, but Revis alone, leaving a big hole at S and/or at ILB isn't gonna make much of a difference.
I think at least half of those rumors is just agents throwing in our name for leverage reasons, because we have the need and cap space. Since Pettine was a DC I'd think he does not feel the need for AllPro's everywhere to field a competitive D.
We will see how much of that is true, the FA madness starts soon...

Hmmm.... I wasn't aware that his cap numbers were that big. That would ABSOLUTELY have to be re-worked.
Actually, no... that's just a straight up wait for him to be cut kinda number.
Even if you took 20 million (4 per year from the next 5 years) of it as a signing bonus up front, and then gave him an additional 8 million (2 per year from the remaining 4 years at that point) as a roster bonus next year, his cap hit would still be like 10 million per year - if you tried to account for every single dollar, which you'd have to do in a restructure.
The only way to really make it work would be to add a year or two to the deal to allow you to pro-rate the numbers further out.... which he may be up for in order to get a large chunk of that money in guarantees.

Correct me if I'm wrong ..... but isn't this draft supposed to be really deep at WR and CB?
I think that these 2 markets are going to start becoming buyers markets once some of the biggest pieces land. (and maybe even before then) I don't see any need to throw 1/4 to 1/3 of our cap space at any of the top end players at those 2 positions. We should be looking for pieces that fit, not Pro Bowlers. Add the Pro Bowl guys in the draft.

Didn't he have a "meh" year for the Bucs? I suppose he's still kind of young at 28, but CB's don't normally play at a high level 30 and beyond.
I'd rather just spend a 3rd rounder on a CB.
Something tells me a team like the Pats would get him. Brady isn't a kid anymore and might only have 2-3 years of high level QB play left in him. And with them losing Talib, I think he's gone, it might be a perfect fit.
