Groves too!

Came on, instantly voted captain... good depth at OLB, great special teamer (where he held his captain title here) and veteran presence in the locker room.

Wonder what the heck went down there with Groves? Maybe they feared for his health?

They never came out and gave a specific reason. Not that they ever do. But my own synopsis from reading the articles was that we like some of the younger OLBs and with having a big top 3 at the position they didn't think it made sense to hold onto a big contract for a backup that would take major reps from young prospects only to possibly get cut anyways. Eric Martin, Justin Staples and Brandon Magee will get more reps not to mention Armonty Bryant whispers of being an OLB in camp.

Kinda seemed like a respect thing too. He'll be able to catch on somewhere(likely Tennessee) and make more of an impact with being cut so early.

Didn't we cut Martin and Magee also? I thought we did. First I heard of AB being tried at LB.

I wanted to make sure I wasn't wrong but I couldn't find anything. So I'll go with them still being on the team.

Yeah I couldn't find anything either, you know whats really odd? I checked out the signed/waived lists and Groves is no where to be found either. There is no mention of him being released. I thought I read where Groves, Magee and one other LB being released, I was wondering where our other LB's were going to come from. Don't know why that Groves is not on there.

Oh you're thinking of Larry Grant. He was the ILB cut along with Groves.

He didn't fit in with Sutton's press coverage scheme and played really poorly last year as a result.

5+ Million in salary was said to be part of the reason.. Not fitting the scheme was said to be another. I thought he was pretty good.

And perfectly suited for our new defense...it's almost too bad we are now pretty full at the position...

If he was cut because he couldn't play in a press coverage scheme, as a previous poster said, then he is the exact opposite of perfectly suited for our defense.

He still is, just a bad scheme. If he goes somewhere like Houston or somewhere that doesn't play as much press than he'll be a probowler once again.

Just turns out at 5'9 and 190 he wasn't fit to press anyone

He'd be a perfect fit for Tampa and Lovie. That D could get scary real fast. The guy is a stud zone CB.

Chargers waive Jonas Mouton

The Chargers have let go of a former second-round pick whose career has been marked by injuries.

The club waived linebacker Jonas Mouton with a failed physical designation on Wednesday, the team announced. In all, Mouton – the No. 61 pick in 2011 — played just three games for San Diego, recording one tackle. The 26-year-old Michigan product missed the 2013 season with a torn right ACL and most of the 2011 campaign with a shoulder ailment.

Mouton had some promise coming out, but injuries killed him. Between them releasing he and English, their LB corp will look young I'd assume.

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

Raiders: Receiver Greg Little glad for fresh start

NAPA -- In the early days of Raiders training camp, the "wow" factor belongs to wide receiver Greg Little, based on raucous reviews from season-ticket holders attending practice.

Although Little didn't make as many plays Sunday in the Raiders' first padded practice as he did in the previous two sessions, he was still singled out by coach Dennis Allen for a contested catch in traffic on a pass from Matt Schaub.

A waiver claim from the Cleveland Browns last May, Little has made some headway in jump-starting a career that began as a second-round draft pick out of North Carolina in 2011.

Now all he has to do is hold on.

Therein lies the problem with Little, who saw one pass get away from him after he outfought Neiko Thorpe on a sideline throw with Raiders fans groaning as the ball hit the ground.

Although he was the Browns' leading receiver in each of his first two seasons and had 155 receptions for 1,821 yards and eight touchdowns over three years, Little knows why he's not in Cleveland anymore.

"My numbers were good but not what they could have been had I maximized every opportunity that I had a chance to catch the ball," Little said.

Dropped passes are not an official stat in the NFL, but Pro Football Focus had Little dropping eight passes while catching 41 a year ago, and one estimate had him with 14 drops in 2012, including one game against Cincinnati where he dropped between four and six passes depending on who was counting.

Wide receiver Rod Streater said Little "has been making some great plays, some incredible catches" and said of the dropped passes in Cleveland, "He's put it behind him, so we'll put it behind him with him. He's out there making plays, and he feels like he belongs here."

Little, 6-foot-2, 220 pounds, is part of a large group of Raiders looking for a fresh start, the difference being that he's not in the 29- to 32-year age group of some others. Little is still only 25.

Feeling rejuvenated by a clean slate, a demanding but supportive coaching staff and more camaraderie with his teammates than he ever felt in Cleveland, Little said being waived was a blessing.

"At a certain point in Cleveland I was stamped a certain way after so many mistakes," Little said. "You hear people in the back of your head saying, 'He can't do it,' or, 'He won't do it,' or, 'He's not able to do it,' and that's just fuel to my fire. I'll let that propel me to new heights."

Little also realizes that catches and drops mean only so much in practice.

"I'm just looking for it to carry over on Sundays," Little said. "That's where it counts, man."

In contrast to former drop-prone Raiders receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey, Little is capable of looking smooth and natural and can win a fight for the ball with a defender.

Allen likes what he sees so far.

"I'm not going to let any one play deter me on how I feel about Greg Little," Allen said. "He's an outstanding talent, and since he's been here he's done everything we've asked him to do and been a real pro about doing his job."

So, Greg Little looks really physical and can catch the occasional tough pass in traffic but will drop a bunch? noone here could have ever told Raider fans that one

I don;t really get the Greg Little hate. Yes, he had the dropsies but really with our WR looking the way it does, are we really better off with him gone?

I'm not saying I'm a massive Greg Little fan but he was better than alot of the crap we've shuffled through our WR core a la Robiskie, Massaquoi, Andre Davis, Quincy Morgan and of course the immortal Frisman Jackson.

Sadly, I would've taken Massaquoi, Davis and Morgan over Little.

the guy wanted out of Cleveland and he was a basket case here. its what happens when a player is forced to play when he isn't ready. maybe the move will help him?? but I doubt he would ever do well here from a mental state. jmo.

Totally forgot about Andre Davis. I had high hopes for him coming out of the draft. Ugh.

I don't either. I wish him all the luck. We'll miss his blocking. I doubt we have any WR on the roster who can block like he did. Of course, blocking is only one job of a WR. His main one is to run good routes to get open and then lock up the catch.

Little didn't leave here like a jerk. He's no Hillis. He made no demands. No hate towards him just because we waived him.

Quote:

Now wait a minute Greg, when you hear them in the back of your head it's really you thinking what you think they're thinking. I think, I just discovered a big part of your problem. You didn't feel comfortable here. Somehow they did things to make you think they thought that way about you and then when the ball was in the air instead of focusing on the catch you were focusing on things you made up that you're hearing in the back of your head. In the back of your head you should have been hearing, from yourself, "Catch it, keep it."

Fumbles happen when you worry about fumbling. Dropped passes happen when you worry about dropping them.

I hope your new surroundings clears your mind and you're able to step up. What I'm hearing you say is that you'll never have done it from here. Good luck man.

I agree, most dropped passes happen when you're mind isn't right. Just like in every other sport, like a golfer who misses some 3 foot putts and starts thinking about it, a player who suddenly goes cold from the foul line and starts thinking about it, a good hitter who suddenly can't hit and starts thinking about it... the good players play their way out of that slump, in several years here, Little was just never able to get out of that slump... which makes you wonder if he ever will because the first time he drops a couple of game passes in Oakland (and he will), all of those thoughts are going to come back to his mind. I have no ill will toward the guy.

How in the heck did that ever HAPPEN to him. I'm no Yankee fan at all, but I've woken out of a sound sleep thinking, how does that even happen?! What if it happens to me and I can no longer hit the urinal or something?!

DC_good points about the mental thing. Some guys don't have what it takes to want the pressure. You can never run down the field thinking, "Don't throw it to me, don't throw it to me, OH HELL, HERE IT COMES!"

When he dropped that TD pass in the endzone vs. the bengals (I think it was) I wondered if he was thinking that at the time.
