Didn't we already go this route with Jake Delhomme? Can we please just let another team deal with Schaub and not bring in another QB that won't get us to where we NEED and WANT to go...

Schaub couldn't beat out Case Keenum last year when he came back to health. He's not beating out a rookie nor Hoyer this year.

I want to stay away from Schaub. The good news is that I think we will.

the good news is that:

1. he will be cheap (especially if he is released)
2. his worst season of his career was last year. Everyone knows he spent the off-seasons rebuilding his confidence
3 he has a good his completion% has been in the 60's since he left Atlanta
4. minus last year... he hasn't had a bad TD to INt ratio since 2007 (when it was 1:1)
5. He was already used to a WR that he could trust to just throw it up there and let the WR get the ball.
6. his QBR rating was the worst of his career since he came over from ATL and it was a 73. prior to that it was an 87.00 in 2007. (when was the last time we could say that we had a QB that good?)
7. one bad season doesn't mean a NFL player sucks... it just means they had a bad year.
8. his average per yards has been over 7.4 (minus last year his whole career)
9. He has thrown for over 4000 yards 3 times in his career out of the 6 years he played in Houston
10. A change of scenery to the comforting arms of an old coach will remove last year from his memory and he would instantly be our starting QB.
11. It would take the pressure off the FO to draft a QB in the first round and we could focus on other needs.

12.(IMO) this QB draft class is really weak.

The scary part is they (Shaub and Hoyer) don't get us where we want to go, yet get us far enough to miss out on a franchise QB next year.

ie..... If we draft a later round pick to develop at QB, the odds of him panning out goes down. Nobody can say if we'll have this opportunity again.

I believe IF they bring Shaub in, it is an indication they have no plan to draft a QB at #4.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

the difference is that he was already on the decline the previous 3-4 seasons with CAR prior to us signing him.

Schaub really had one bad year.

Yeah, i laugh that people think Hoyer>>Schaub.. he's not, and probably never will be..Hoyer is a journeyman backup. Schaub has proven he can play consistently. he was without his TE, his starting RB and his fav receiver last year..I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt based on what he's done in the past over a guy that's played 4 games in this league and has thrown 6 ints in those 4 games. I think its because hoyer vs what we had on our team looked good, but that's not saying much. I still like hoyer to keep around as a backup, and who knows maybe he suprises us and becomes Kurt warner, I think he's more like holcomb but either way, if you can get a quality NFL starter you do it. Then take Garoppolo or mettenberger later in the draft..Fix the LB/S/WR holes.

I follow your thinking but I'm afraid I don't have a solution.. I mean, I guess we can throw the kitchen sink in to get the first pick and take Teddy. But man that leaves big holes.. WR, RB, Safety, ILB, Maybe Center, Maybe another Guard.

he was always limited and relied on Houston having a dominant running game to make things easier in the pass game. last year the OL fell apart leading to the run game falling apart (along with injuries to Foster/Tate) and Schaub demonstrated what happens to him in those circumstances, but the main reason Houston fans turned on him so much is that it was suspected all along (just not exasperated until the other areas fell apart).

also, Schaub never seemed to make WRs better. His main target was Andre Johnson. After him it was dumpoffs to Owen Daniels and Foster. That was the Houston offense and it was successful (especially with teams terrified of the run game).

Schaub wants to start. He feels he has earned that right and perhaps he has. But, I have seen Schaub play (even in his good years) and do not believe that he is a good QB. Very much a bottom side of average type of guy and he's not getting any better at this point.

I would say he could be an Alex Smith guy, but he takes too many chances at inopportune times to be an Alex Smith and he is far more immobile.

If you sign Schaub, then you are saying that your team is good enough that you don't need an above average QB to compete. I don't believe that is true about the Browns and I don't want us to settle even if it is true. Add in Hoyer and a likely early 1st round QB pick and we are talking about alot of QB-turmoil. Please, no.

This assessment is spot-on. When is the stupid staff of the Browns (referring to ALL of them) going to realize that if we keep band aiding the QB position, we'll keep continuing to go 4-12 and be the same crap team of a season(s) ago.

Fix the QB position PROPERLY, and IMO Schaub was a total disaster last season. An atomic bomb that went off there in Houston and totally stunk up the place. If the staff wishes to go into season with Schaub and Hoyer and hang 100% their hopes on them two - then we've already shorted ourselves IMO.

I just can only hope we don't pay a lot to acquire Schaub, nor bank on him being our starter if we are indeed licking our lips to acquire him. I really hope that all this crap is false and that we aren't even interested in him

WR, RB, Center and etc aren't going to flourish (in terms of winning) when a crappy QB is playing anyway, so it makes the wisest sense to fix the QB position cause brute reality of the matter is, it starts with the QB. You can't WIN in this league, regardless of surrounding talent, with a sub-par QB.

Example, what good is Adrian Peterson, best RB in the league, when he's got Ponder at qb? Nothing else matters until the QB is solidified.

Another example, look at our defense last year. What good is having a sweet D when the opposing offense gets a million chances to move the ball on us cause OUR offense goes 3 & out in five seconds? Eventually the best D is going to breakdown, get gassed, whatever the case is.

The only way I'd want Schaub is if he's our third string QB. Essentially a QB coach with pads on that helps whatever rookie we draft prep for duty behind Hoyer. Given his salary and history that is never gonna happen. Also I too feel like this would be Delhome 2.0.

if you look, Schaub was fine the first 6 games of the season sans the 1 game against SF. Then it went downhill..which was about the time he lost daniels and foster..

I've posted this before... if people haven't noticed and what teams have hinted at is that teams are bringing their star QB along more carefully now to fit their scheme without beating them up. They are looking at both long term and short term at the same time. (draft a future QB sign a stop gap QB and pick the guy who will fit their goals.

http://www.clevelandbrowns.com/media-cen...2a-0b1e6fa28d2e

Our team is looking for players that are up and coming/already fit our scheme on how the team wants to play Cleveland Browns Football. That seems to be the mantra in all of their press interactions.

Shanahan style offense = Schaub in the short term. He is not afraid to request to dump a QB he doesn't like.

I'd be willing to bet we get a stop gap QB (like Schaub) especially if Shanny wants to throw the ball a lot and I think the Browns see Teddy/Bortles as their guy with Schaub/Hoyer.

If they want to run zone blocking/read option I see Manziel.
*I don't think they have any interest in Manziel because Shanny will pimp smack Johnny Football around. He has a history of not getting along with outspoken QB' like RG3 and Mcnabb.

http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2014/01/donovan_mcnabb_kyle_shanahan_c.html

That leaves us in one of two places...

pick up schaub and draft Bortles/Teddy B/later round QB (keep Hoyer)

or

Run with Hoyer and draft draft Bortles/Teddy B/later round QB and keep Campbell or Weeden.

my guess is that option 1 is going to be the way we go.

Ummm, no. He was fine against SD and the Tenn game was not terrible if it didn't show what was going to happen later.

But, that 4 game slide was largely on his shoulders. He couldn't move the ball against Baltimore or SF and they got blown out of both games.

He had a great half against Seattle, but he was a big reason they blew that game in the 2nd half right down to a mind numbingly dumb decision to gift-wrap a pick-6 to Richard Sherman late in the 4th quarter up 7pts.

and, he helped lead the Texans to a 6-31 deficit to the Rams before getting hurt on a Chris Long sack.

Give me option 2 every day and twice on Sunday. We already have Campbell and we know what he can do. IMO, Campbell is the ideal #3 QB, he can play a few games and might get you a win, but he's not good enough to be a long term starter. And he's probably fine with being the #3. Schaub will want to start.

Yep. He was benched after game 6, so the first 6 games were brutal. 9 INTs in the first 6 games. I think it was 4 straight games with a Pick 6.

When he returned it was no better, 5 INTs in the last 3 games.

I saw quite a few Houston games, he looked like he had Delhomme Syndrome. Perhaps a defensive coordinator figured something out and exposed him?

Not to go all cynical, but it's the NFL - you are what you've proven yourself to be.

He got stuck behind that guy in New England for a bit, then sucked in Arizona, then looked Ok here. He isn't more than that, he isn't less than that. He's shown potential, in a system we don't run any longer - that's about all we've got right now.

Yep, that is a "just the facts" look at Hoyer. Love the kid and hope he can be our guy but he still has LOTS to prove. Looks like he'll get a chance too... hope he makes the most of it.

Dear lord please no.... Maybe I'm completely wrong but Matt's last year and a half have been awful and despite putting up good numbers I didn't think he was all that grewt beforehand

He under throws deep balls, has to have a good run game because the one thing he does do very well is play action, the guy is the definition of a statue and can not extend plays, he loves to check down and throw the ball behind the line and had trouble getting anyone not named Owen Daniels, Andre Johnson, or Arian foster involved in the offense....

I'd like Schaub as a back up to Hoyer with a new rookie sitting 3rd, but I don't think I want Schaub the starter from the last year or so. But who knows, he might light it up here.

Personally until I hear there is a deal in the works I don't want to put much more thought into the matter. I know I don't want Hoyer traded until we get to see him start for a season, I just felt like I was watching Sipe again when Hoyer played and I loved it; even if it only lasted for two games.

What I hope is, we take two quarterbacks in the upcoming draft. Not necessarily at #4 but even if we do take one at 4 I'd love to get another young QB later in the draft to bring along.... That said, if they decide to bring in Schaub as a mentor to a young QB I wouldn't freak over it. He DOES know the system very well. Hoyer, and two rookies would suit me just fine. Schaub, Hoyer and a rookie not as much but it's workable. Hell, Hoyer may not work out in our new offense. So who knows who will make this team.... A rookie to start, Schaub backing him up and a second rookie to bring along? It's sure going to be interesting to see how this team comes together. Whomever is our starter we better provide him with a running game this year. Throwing the ball 42 times a game is NOT going to cut it in this division.

I think taking Watkins at #4 would give Hoyer all the weapons he needs in the passing game. So we'll see what they do, but I'm hoping we take Watkins and pass on the QB's at #4.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- It's a "serious possibility'' that the Browns will sign Texans veteran quarterback Matt Schaub to compete with Brian Hoyer for a backup role, a league source told cleveland.com.

I'm only good with it if the edited quote above rings true.

Schaub looks like a QB who has had the ice-water stolen from his veins and is on the path to BackupVille because the nerve is gone.

He QB'd a team loaded with talent, specifically a team with an elite running game. It's rather easy for a QB to succeed under those circumstances. He's older, he's more skittish, and he's coming off a year where he was only sacked 27 times. Nobody can say Schaub is "shellshocked."

I believe we should look at someone more concrete than this.

'Terry Pluto's Cleveland Browns Scribbles: Why Browns are determined to add another veteran quarterback'

https://www.dawgtalkers.net/newreply.php?...part=2&vc=1

By Terry Pluto, The Plain Dealer
on March 12, 2014 at 7:15 PM, updated March 12, 2014 at 9:08 PM

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Scribbles in my Browns notebook after Brandon Weeden and Jason Campbell are cut:

1. Even if the Browns add another quarterback, such as Matt Schaub (their primary target), they still will look to add a young QB in the draft. Schaub is expected to be released by Houston at some point -- but it may not be for a while because of contract and salary cap considerations. Schaub had some of his best seasons with Kyle Shanahan calling the plays. Now the Browns' offensive coordinator, Shanahan was with Schaub in 2008-09 when the Texans ranked third and fourth in total offense.

2. The Browns really like Brian Hoyer, but they want depth. Every report about his recovery from ACL surgery is excellent, but he has to prove he can stay healthy for an entire season. He has only four career starts. Schaub has a 46-44 record as a starter with the Texans. In 2012, he was 12-4 with a 90.7 rating, throwing 22 touchdown passes compared to 12 interceptions.

3. Last season, he was 2-6 as a starter and played in 10 games. In his first two games (both victories), he threw six touchdowns to three interceptions. For the rest of the season, it was four TDs and 11 interceptions. He lost his confidence and was booed. At 32, is he destined to be a backup, or can he be an effective starter? No one can answer that question right now.

4. Cutting Campbell and Weeden was no surprise. The Browns believe the team lost confidence in both. The new front office didn't think either could help. But they do want two veterans in place, Hoyer and someone else. I keep hearing Rex Grossman as a possibility, and that's certainly uninspiring.

5. Signing someone such as Schaub would give General Manager Ray Farmer even more freedom to pass up a QB at No. 4. I don't have any inside knowledge, but I believe the Browns do like Teddy Bridgewater. But I also believe he will be gone at No. 4. The Browns do not want to force the issue by drafting a QB at No. 4 just because they need one.

6. Two veterans allow the team to shop lower in the draft for a rookie -- and give that player time to develop. It allows the Browns to take an impact player -- their goal -- at the top of the draft.

7. The Browns were very interested in Sam Shields, a cornerback who appeared headed to free agency. But he signed a four-year deal ($39 million) to stay with Green Bay. New coach Mike Pettine considers cornerbacks the second-most important players on the field -- after the quarterback.

8. That's why the Browns may look for another cornerback and why they pursued Darrelle Revis. They really wanted Revis, but he signed with New England for $12 million.

9. I hear if they decide not to match an offer for Alex Mack, they may pursue Ryan Wendell. He has been New England's starting center for four years. The Browns are concerned that Mack's agent, Marvin Demoff, wants his client to play elsewhere. They believe their meeting with Mack went well, but they aren't sure how things stand with the agent.

10. The Browns are still shopping for a veteran receiver. I keep hearing Julian Edelman mentioned.

Texans may hold off on cutting Matt Schaub, try to trade him

Posted by Michael David Smith on March 13, 2014, 6:37 AM EDT

Matt Schaub is not expected to play for the Texans this season. But that doesn’t mean the Texans are going to cut him.

John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports that the Texans are keeping Schaub for a while, and Schaub won’t be going anywhere any time soon.

If Schaub is still on the team when the season starts, he’ll cost more than $14 million against the Texans’ salary cap. So it’s extremely unlikely that he’ll still be on the Texans in September. But the Texans may think they can get something for Schaub in a trade. And they may be right.

The Browns are reportedly interested in bringing in Schaub, who previously played for Cleveland offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan. The Texans would be smart to see if they can convince the Browns to give up a draft pick for Schaub.

The Texans’ starting quarterback will probably be Teddy Bridgewater, Johnny Manziel or Blake Bortles, one of whom they’ll select with the first overall pick in the draft. But until things get settled this offseason, they’re keeping all their options open by keeping Schaub.

This is the right way to go. If they feel no available QB is worth it at #4, then don't take one just to take one. Hopefully there is a way to land Teddy. I personally would not be upset with either Bortles or Johnny there, but that's me. I think they need to grab one of the top guys, but they're the ones deciding who the top guys are.

Who calls the shots? The agent?
