I think all the coverage is warranted given that this is the largest mass shooting/murder by an individual in modern American history.

How is this coverage? The media keeps repeating the same things over and over. It was coverage when it first happened and info was still coming in. Now it is just a story to boost ratings. If they are really concerned about coverage, lets see these stations go commercial free for a week like they did after 9/11. They won't, instead they reword something to make it sound like new info and use it to keep you glued to the TV.

What time did that press conference start this morning? It was supposed to be 9, then 9:15, at 9:30 I had to leave for work and it still hadn't started. Was this a honest delay, or just a gimmick by the media to string people along?

Who remembers who Charles Roberts is?

Now that you had time to google it, you will recall he is the one responsible for Amish school shooting 6 months ago. How many people actually remember him? My guess is some, but not many. There was media coverage, but nothing like this, nothing like during the Columbine shootings. There was less coverage because the Amish did not give the media anything to cover. There were no lawsuits or finger pointing. The result, Roberts is probably not as known or as remembered.

Also, I think it wouldn't hurt for us all to take a step back and remember how the Amish responded to the tragedy. Personally, I thought their response was very admirable.

It is not the same thing over and over. New info keeps coming out. For example, today, they found out that he had been sent to a mental institution and was documented as a threat to himself and others by some sort of judge/justic. And he sent a package to NBC that they just recieved today. If new info keeps coming out, then they should keep talking about it. If there's no new news then move onto something else.

Oh, and I dont' pay much attention to the press conferences. I just check CNN.com because if there is something new, it will be listed there.

Did I miss something? I listened to the manifesto on yahoo.com - yet it had no hammer pose in it. That's the only reason I even listened to it all - was about 3:00 - is there an extended version?

The video is suppose to be 20 min long... I've seen bits and pieces of it... but he also mailed a pretty big document with pictures and his 'plays' or whatever that was... I'm not sure if the hammer is in a video or just one of his dig pix.

Ok, new info came out, fine. They reported it, then what? They go back to rehashing the same stuff over and over in order to maintain 24/7 news coverage on it.

My problem is not so much with the fact that they report it, it is how they are reporting it. The media just uses new info to string people along to keep them tuned in for ratings. They could care less about actually informing. They string people along just like they do when there is a storm brewing or when they have "information that can save your life"

It's a 24hr news television show... what the heck else are they going to talk about?

I understand... but I also appreciate that I can turn it on at any time and get an update... or really what I do is go to their website and get an update.

Tell me about it, he needed to experience the real working class world, experience discipline.

And he says "this is the only option", give me a break.

God wouldn't you love just to knock him out.

JMHO

I think it was the "real world" that set him off.

He couldn't accept the social nature of human beings. So he buried himself in a delusional state of grandeur; he isolates himself from everyone for fear of not being accepted. He covers that fear with a supreme ego. A narcissism that grows out of control.

He needed professional help, some kind of program of social involvement. He basically never came out of his shell and created a million reasons why he shouldn't. He was delusional, narcissistic, angry, fed-up, and ready to die.

Again, a lot of people feel similar to this; sometimes it lasts only a couple hours---sometimes it can last for years, but they don't go on rampages. In this case, little johnny snapped. It happens and it will continue to happen. Its a side-effect of society. There are peolple who shoot up schools, post offices, neighborhood taverns, restaurants, etc. etc. Always because of some perceived injustice at the hands of the others. There will always be social hermits, and some resentful hermits at that; you really can't diagnose whether someone is going to actualize there demons, can you?

Nope. There isn't really a clear cut answer to these cases. No one really knows what causes people to snap and go on a killing spree. Psychologist can produce a profile of warning signs. But of people who feel this way---there really isn't a way to tell who the guy is that is going to go out and take out the world.

It is evidence and it has been turned over to the FBI. You think the murder of thirty students does not capture the public's interest ? No, you GMAB. They are not sensationalizing anything here. They are presenting what happened because PEOPLE WANT TO KNOW why something like this awful sickening tradgety happened. And they are the NEWS it's their JOB to REPORT on what goes on in our society. If you don't want to hear about it, change the channel.

Human interest story yes, but what about the lives of the 30 dead innocent students? Hell I haven't even seen a release of names yet, and it will probably be page 3 newspaper news. This Cho guy will be on all week. But the lives of the innocent will be forgotten, as far as the media goes, they have been forgotten, they are just numbers.

We had about 5 pages in the local Melbourne rag yesterday, complete with photos of about 5 victims, 1 or 2 sentence profiles of approx 20 of them....tragic waste of life.

Yeah, the victims names have been out all over. Last night I came across a site that had links to their myspace pages. It was extremely sad and I couldnt view them all. Just horrible.

You can stop wondering now, I will tell you. No I don't watch much television news, as of late every time I turn it on Cho's face is on, so I change it. I visit many news sites during the day and they are all focusing on Cho as well.

I'm sure there are some stories about the victims, but they are maybe 1-2% of the coverage, am I right? Yet they make up 99% of the dead.

32 people dead and your arguing weather I watch Television or not.

News isn't only on television, my point is not that they don't have ANYTHING about the victims, but 99% of the coverage is about Cho, and why is that? Because it makes sensationalism.

O my, you are right. It is waaaaaaaaaaaaay better to ignore the killer. We should not speak his name or know anything about him. Let us all put our head in the sand and forget he did this. We don't want to know anything about him or what made him snap.

And before you say they are only focusing on him. They are not, but you wouldn't know because you don't watch the news.

what made him do it? your right, but does that mean we need to make him famous?

Can you not tell the story of a man who did this or that. It's not hiding my head in the sand, I want to people to understand what caused this man to do this, but that's a 5 minutes story, not a weeks worth of 24/7 coverage.

You cannot honestly say that are not milking this for all it's worth?

He sent a video for Pete's sake, to the media.. He didn't just leave a letter or video on his desk, he MAILED it to the media. He wanted attention, he wanted people to know who he was. HE WON!!!

LOL, we must agree to disagree.

I understand Eve's point of wanting to know, I just think the media is going about it all wrong, they are just airing it to tell the story. They are in it for the ratings. If it was 5 people killed, this would have been forgotten by Tuesday.

BTW, I went to MSNBC.com and see it there today, was busy yesterday and didn't get there, although the profiles on CNN.com is very nicely done, simple yet effective.

FF...

i'm not sure many will remember the guy and his name...down the road, it'll be 'do you remember when that kid killed all those people at VT?'...so i don't think giving coverage is as bad as you make it sound...

that said, the news excessively covers such stories, and it won't change...at least this one is truly a big deal and is something we can try and learn from...i'll take excessive coverage of this over excessive coverage of that kidnapped girl in cancun or Jon Benet any day of the week...

I'm not much of a name-caller, unless it's football season. And then, the only people that hear me spouting obsenities are the people at the sports bar during gametime. But I like to debate

That is true, that's how we are as humans, even more sad, you will find more people that can name more serial killers, than the first or last names of their victims. We are a curious species, that thrives off of the unknown.
