They have to "sell" the pick. Selling Thomas is much harder than a flashy QB, RB, or WR.
Only to the unreasonable! Selling it to the rest of us is pretty simple

Toad,I think it boils down to "which motivation" is their top priority.
If they fear for their jobs,I think a QB makes MUCH more sense! It's a "built in excuse" for them to get "another year". I mean if you're on the hot seat, you DO have to make a pick that buys you time and is a "feel good" pick.
The NFL is a "business first". And careers, ticket sales and marketing ARE contributing factors.
Now,do I think they'll REACH to do that? No,I certainly don't. But if two players BPA out REAL close? It could be THE deciding factor. Not a HUGE part of the puzzle, but maybe "just enough" to make that "ounce of difference" at podium time.

I'll tell you why I don't buy into that line of thinking.
We draft a QB who's not going to contribute at all. We still spent millions in free agency, upgrading the DE, NT, and OG positions. Frye, who is Savage's pet project, is entering his third year in the league, second+ as the fulltime starter. Savage also brought in another pet-project in Anderson.
So with all that in mind, the team should still improve, therefore a built-in excuse really is no such thing.
Furthermore.........
GM's aren't fired with their first head coach. If RAC gets fired (he is on the hottest of hotseats) Opie's job is safe, which means Opie doesn't need an excuse. Keep in mind that RAC isn't calling the shots here. This is all on Savage.
The very bottom line is making the team better. Savage won't draft with the ideas of selling it to anyone or saving his own ass in the back of his mind. He doesn't have to.
***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy. Manziel, see Josh Gordon. Dumbass.***

It doesn't always by more time Pitt.........look at Dennis Green last year. Imo if they feel their jobs are on the line then the pick that makes us better in the short term is either Peterson or Joe. Imo though this is irrelevant, becuase Phil isn't on the hot seat unless we have another disastrous year of immature players causing on and off the field problems (aka another one of Phil's picks like Leon making being an idiot). Therefore, I don't know how much of a consideration it's going to be, becuase Romeo doesn't make the picks Phil does. Furthermore, imo RAC's gone anyway.........we aren't going to finish .500 or better next year no matter who we pick, and again imo that's what RAC must do to save his job. If Phil is smart he will address one of the 2 key positions (LT or QB) with long term answers, and continue building for 08 or 09. It just doesn't make since to go for the short term fix, becuase no one in this draft is going to make us a competitor next season.................Joe, Brady, AP, CJ..........with any of them we are going to struggle to win 7 games next year.
Keep your eye on the ball Savage and build for the future!!!!
Against logic, the most effective armor is willful ignorance.

Agreed, i stsed something to this in another thread, Gm's very rearly have to look over thier shoulders, If they had to Lineman (Unsexy Pick) would never get drafted in the first round if at all, but GM's jobs are safe so they can focus on making a team better, not sexy.

Sorry, it was toward the end of the article and was referring to Travis Wilson and why he saw limited time... Just found it silly that RAC threw in the comment about him holding out when in fact, he lost a total of three total days??

Good. So in your opinion, there isn't a concensus guy. You could say If either is taken, it'll upset the other guys camp. So would Savage really be in a position to have to sell one player to the other side in that case?
The only way he'd have to do a sell-job is if he really screwed people up and took someone like Adams. So would he then have to attempt to influence people regarding his decision? I go back to Wimbley last year, who was by all accounts a guy in our collective rear-view mirrors. It seemed a toss-up between Bunkley and Ngata for the longest time, with Wimbley showing up towards the end of the race. So when it was time to select a guy, did he go with the path of least resistance? Nope, he chose Wimbley regardless.
I see nothing here that suggests his hand would be influenced by media or fan pressure. Even if he felt that way, which the track record shows he doesn't, in this perticular draft the opinions are so split that there isn't a "marketable" guy.
I wouldn't worry about that one Mav.
Sorry to start this up again, but...
I don't think you're understanding me...it's my fault for not being clear enough.
I am under no delusion that Savage is going to make his selection based off fan/media preference. The influence I'm worried about is from Ownership and non-football people. This is the influence I'm afraid of...the "suits".
I've showed what I believe Savage's board looks like and I've told you that some signs point to Quinn even though I think Peterson might be the guy Savage really covets. (this is stuff I've been told)
-
And another perception I'm getting: This marketing move would have nothing to do with any of us. You don't need to market to nuts like us who sit around and talk about this team all day.
The Marketing segment that I think Lerner would like to touch is at the National Level. What player would get Cleveland on Monday Night? What player would get Cleveland a lot of National Media coverage? I think this is what Lerner wants to reach with this pick. He's a businessman, can you blame him?
Take solace because, ultimately it comes down to Phil and how he has 'em ranked...now I know you don't want to hear this, but marketability is an attribute looked at with these players. How large of an effect does it play? Who knows?
but, if you think Lerner hasn't thought of the Notre Dame demographic and immediate National exposure Brady Quinn would bring to the Cleveland Browns, you're being naive.
You of all people Toad. When the rumblings about Savage looking at Green, Schaub and Carr were circulating, you were pretty dead set that it meant Savage was looking to upgrade the QB position.
I know you pay attention to what's written...and this stuff I'm telling you has been in print...so what makes this "Marketing" stuff so unbelievable?

I think travis needed some humbling. they didn't want 2 leons in the receiving corps
We're trying to throw the ball downfield and he checked the ball down to Trent Richardson and the Indians on the choice.

I think if one of the QB's is the pick thats the main reason..a upgrade in the position. If Phil is coveting Peterson the best way for that to happen is Quinn/Thomas are off the board... Peterson IS NOT THE PICK I WANT AT 3.

If Crennel is on the hot seat it is our fault. I keep hearing that he's on the hot seat, and I for one don't buy it. I have not heard Lerner or Savage say any such thing. In fact they are saying the opposite. The ONLY way I see him getting canned is if he totally loses the team. I don't think Win/Loss will enter into it. While I think we will conted for a playoff spot and the superbowl...many smart posters have pointed out we are not that talented. IF that is the case then how can someone say it is all RACs fault? I think just as savage believes that this is a long term project that he thinks switching coaches is not the way to go. I still think RAC will be a good coach.
And so I dont' think who we pick will be based in any way on the fear of losing thier jobs. JMHO

I would want Calvin over AP if we stayed at #3... Just see AP as a HUGE reach without a trade down...
I still hope it is Joe or BQ in that order... If both are gone, I would like to see a trade down or would settle for CJ...
I just CANNOT see Phil reaching for AP at #3 knowing that we could drop back and get him before Houston does and collect some pics on the way...

As much as I love Joe Thomas, I don't think the Browns are going to take him.
I think it comes down to Thomas or a QB. JMHO
Quote:
They are going to make yet another mistake and go w/the marketing pick.
Passing on Thomas and taking a QB wouldn't necessarily be a mistake, though I understand why you and others would feel that it would be. If they do pass on Thomas for a QB, I'm pretty sure that the FO would feel they are making the best move for the "team" and would not see it as a mistake.
Quote:
If the Browns move Steinbach to LT, and they might, they will making a mistake. I don't think Steinbach would be a good LT, but he is a VERY good guard.
I agree, though I don't think they will move him unless Shaffer starts at LT and proves he is not improving at the position.
Quote:
While Shaffer probably won't be a better LT than Steiny, who the hell is going to play LG?
Again, hopefully they won't move Steiner outside but if they did they would probably have the same question. Do they move Shaffer to RT, and then figure out who the guards are between 'Druz, Tucker, Sowells, McKinney, or a DP like Blalock or Grubbs?
Quote:
Tucker can play either RT or RG. He would be fine at either.
The FO seems to feel moving Tucker inside would weaken two positions, so they must feel he is a better tackle than guard. If he stays, I hope he stays outside.
Quote:
If the OL stays as is............it is going to suck again and people are going to lose their jobs.
I don't understand this... I assume you mean stays the same as in Shaffer, Steiner, Fraley, 'Druz/Sowells/McKinney, Tucker. In which case I would say that you can't know they would suck and that you're assuming we won't draft a guard high enough or talented enough to step in at RG day one. Not taking a guard, IMO, would be a mistake but if they did, an O-line of Shaffer, Steiner, Fraley, Draft Pick, Tucker could turn out to be a pretty decent line.
At this point, after all the hyperbole, I think our draft pick comes down to Thomas or Quinn, (assuming Russell goes to the Raiders). I think that Peterson & CJ barely enter into the equation for us this year. (Of course I could be completely wrong.) There will be some disappointed fans no matter who is taken, but that doesn't mean the team can't improve over the long run if they take a QB, nor is it certain that the team would improve substantially by drafting Thomas. It's a possibility that a QB drafted could sit behind Frye for a year or two. It's possible that even if we take Thomas, that play by the QB (Charlie or Anderson) and other skill players don't improve over last season. It's possible that no matter who we take, we still get beaten regularly this coming season because we're still talent light along the D-line, because we don't have a decent running back, (not saying Lewis can't do it, just don't know yet,) we're weak in the secondary and/or because the competition is tough. Assuming that drafting Thomas would be the fix-all we've all been waiting for would be a major assumption just like assuming we won't get better play out of the line this year with Shaffer at LT, Steiner at LG, a healthy Tucker at RT and a new RG would be. No matter who we draft, I have to believe Savage when he says he'll be drafting the best player for the short, medium and long terms. JMHO

Minnesota really wants Peterson btw. If we traded down it would have to be before pick 7. If we take AD, Quinn will fall to 7 and vice versa, plus it's REALLY hard to trade down from the top 3 picks in any draft making it very unlikely. Savage said he and his guys have their top 5 players firmly ranked in a consensus (Peterson is above Quinn on it, trust me, Thomas is probably either 3rd or 4th). This board is too Thomas biased for my liking, lacks good old fashioned subjectivity.

i'll never understand how drafting a certain player is the general manger trying to "save his job"
because if that doesn't work, in this age of the nfl, he's fired anyways...
and toad hit the nail on the head, savage didn't care about marketing when he took wimbley, but now, looking back on it, wimbley is a pretty marketable guy, intimidating size, but has that good guy appearance about him...
the browns don't need any marketing help, despite all our losing seasons, we're still one of the most profitable franchises in the nfl...
the fans aren't like fans in other towns that maybe don't have the deep and rich football roots that cleveland and ohio in general have, the cleveland fans will embrace any player at any position, where in other cities maybe those fans only embrace the skill position guys
cleveland fans know the game is won at the line of scrimmage... that's a pretty well known fact, they don't care, they'll embrace a left tackle, or a right guard, hell we embrace our long snapper...
and looking at the other side of it, if phil goes with one guy, yes, people will be happy, but you've gotta remember that they'll be another group pretty unhappy, and with this year being so split, you'll have fans mad at you, but if phil's guy plays well, nobody will be complaining... i remember people complaining when we didn't select ngata, and nobody is complaining now, when we clearly took the better player, and got a free pick out of the whole thing...
the need at quarterback and the need at left tackle are one in the same, we are bad at both ends... you can't really say that we need one or the other, or why, and why not...

I can see this is one of those arguments where no one will give an inch. All I'm going to say is this: If you, Toad, and others think that marketing is not a consideration in to who a team drafts, you are incredibly naive. And that is one word I would have never previously assigned to either one of you. So........I'm going to say this w/out any malice at all. You guys are either naive or full of . Personally, I almost hope you are full of . Because you are two of the guys I actually read, and it would be sad to know I have been wasting that much time reading people who don't have a clue.

all that crap will come when we start to win....and savage gives us the best chance of that if left alone...
we got k2...no national media coverage....well except for his evil kineval imitation...
we'll get the monday night games when we show up on sundays...we'll get the national media coverage we we consistanly kick the snot out of some good teams...when we actually contend for something for a change...
lerner appears to be a hands off owner...i see no reason to believe that he's suddenly doing otherwise...

I agree...And if he does this he needs to go NOW...I'd fire him on the spot if I was Lerner...There's more to this team than a one year plan...
We're getting closer and closer to closing the gap with the rest of the AFC North...We screw this up this year in order to try and win 8 games we gots MAJOR problems for several more years...And I'm referring to the first four picks of this draft...
It was said from the beginning that this regime is in a FIVE YEAR PLAN...I see it now developing into a FOUR YEAR PLAN with moves made...Specifically the signings of Bentley and Steinbach...The drafting of Wimbley and the emergence of Jones...
IF we continue with the PERIMETER players on the 1st day of this draft we will NOT HIT THE FIVE YEAR WINDOW...And I am referring to Johnson/A Corner/And a RB...If we go with those 3 positions on day one we will miss this window...WHY???
The NEEDS on this football team have been identified...And at the TOP OF THE LIST are 3 specific areas...
QB OL DL
In the Top 3 picks of this draft are 3 JUSTIFIABLE FRANCHISE DEFINING PLAYERS...
Russell Quinn Thomas
IMO one of those 3 players MUST BE A BROWN....The ONLY way I do not take one of those 3 at #3 is if Johnson is still available...It is why it is PERTINENT that Savage makes every single team in the NFL BELIEVE we will take Johnson at 3 if there...WHY???
Gruden wants Johnson enuff to move to #1...He would certainly make us an offer to come up to 3 and we end up with Quinn or Thomas at 4...We will get that 2nd or 3rd from Gruden...I'm SURE of that one and would be a shrewed move on Savages part...
Corner need or not...There is better players at UNIT NEEDS available with our 2 and 3 picks than a Perimeter player...Unless a FIRST ROUND Corner the caliber of Ross or Houston falls in our laps...We should be concentrating on the TRENCHES at 36 AND 67...
These things all fall into the PLAN...Nickel Corners and perimeter players such as WR's will not improve this football team enuff in the immediate future to save ANYONES JOB...The needed improvement will be missing simply because perimeter players DO SQUAT in improving the main problem that has killed this team for 8 years running...
RUNNING THE BALL & STOPPING THE RUN!!!
Even with a QB at 3...We can STILL address those 2 needs on the 1st day...Even without Thomas...Take a Corner or a RB and we just SCREWED THE POOCH...AGAIN...

Go Browns!!!

Tell you true, I doubt these guys ever worry about thier jobs.. On message boards for every team (not just here) there is always talk like this.
It makes no sense at all, yet it persists..
Let's look at this like reasonable people. Now I don't know what a GM makes, but I would guess that since a coach makes at least 1/2 million per year, the GM makes more. I would think a guy like Ozzie Newsome makes considerably more than that.
People that make a hell of a lot less are able to save money and build a nestegg of cash for that rainy day fund that we should all have (yeah, as if).
The diffrence between one of them and one of us, is that with that much dough coming in, the lifestyle is much higher,, but in the end, if they use the brains that god gave them, a couple of years as a GM at that kinda money and they could very well be set for life.
Let's look at a guy like savage for instance. He's one of the newer GM's in the league. Just beginning his third year in that chair. At a minimun, I'd say that in that time he's earned a Million or more dollars (for those who need a visual that's 1,000,000,000) I'm betting it's more, but I'd rather understate it.
I'll also bet that he's got a contract for 4 or 5 years and if Randy fires him, he's still gonna get paid the balance of the contract.. Fellas, that's another 2.5 million for sitting at home on the bayou sipping a little Southern Comfort with his feet kicked up! (oh man, I can see me now)
Anyway, all of this is to point out that if they lose thier jobs, it's not like one of us losing our jobs... Just not the same ballpark at all.
And here's the kicker, just when you think that a GM that did a lousy job and gets fired and will never work again, guess what, he crops up as either a GM or something else in a different organization and he's back in the chips again.
Now I guess someone is gonna say there is a stigma attached to being fired.. again, perhaps in the real world in which you and I live, but we are talking about the make believe world of the NFL! Whole different ball of wax....
No, they don't want to lose thier jobs, but if they do, I bet there is a golden parachute in thier contracts that makes sure they won't miss a meal and thier kids always have shoes...
Nope, you'll never convince me that they will make a move JUST to save thier jobs...

Earlier, Toad accused me of painting things black and white. Hey Toad, the above is an example of black and white.
Daman: Name one person who said that Savage would make a pick to save his job. You sure didn't hear that from either Mav or myself. What we are saying is that marketing, selling, justifying...whatever you wanna call it.......does exist in the NFL.
While Toad made a good counterargument earlier, I disagree w/him that the majority of Brown's fans are similar to the people on this board. I went home last week and talked to people about the Browns. Do you realize that there are season ticket holders who don't even know who Calvin Johnson and Joe Thomas are? Believe me.........the majority of fans are not as intense as we are. They do not "waste time" coming to a message board. They go to the games, spend money, and expect the team to win. And if the team ain't winning, it better at least be exciting.
The Browns have not won. In fact, they have been pathetic. They get embarrassed at home, losing games 30 to 0 to the freaking Bengals. And the Browns are far from exciting. Their offense has been one of the worst in the NFL for years. The defense doesn't get a lot of sacks or cause turnovers. You gotta admit....even for those of us who are extremely passionate about the Browns.........well......they are hard to watch.
What does all this mean..............Drafting a LT is not the best public relations move. They would have to "sell" the pick. They would have to say things like this guy will help us win the most games. Problem is...........how many times have the fans already heard this? And have the Browns won?
I also fully understand that the best marketing tool is winning games, but this team HAS NOT won games. They are a combined 14 and 34 in the last 3 years. 14 and 34!!! And I don't care who they take........they ain't winning next year either. And if you all don't think this is a business, you are crazy. There is nothing pure about football anymore....except for some of the play on the field.
Believe me, a Quinn, Peterson, or Russell would make more fans happier than a Joe Thomas. And the Browns can justify drafting one of those guys to themselves by saying they had them all rated high. Hell...........they should be rated high. They are great players, but I maintain they are not what is best for the Browns........and to me, that is the only part of this argument that is open to debate.
I hope that Junior and his marketing people won't have too much influence on this draft and who we take. Oh........and I gotta say this. There are many people on here who say he is a "hands-off" owner, mainly because Junior said he was, *L* but he is anything but a "hands-off" owner. He will have his say on this draft.
As I've been saying for several months now. By the end of this draft, I will know all I need to know about Savage and the rest of the Brown's front office. It's an important year for them. Hell, if they draft Joe Thomas.........I might help them "sell" the pick. We all can...us JT pimps, that is. We can start writing about his accolades and putting together highlight films. Until then............we can start making our feelings known now---------------Say it with me:
WE WANT JOE! WE WANT JOE! WE WANT JOE! WE WANT JOE!

Daman: Name one person who said that Savage would make a pick to save his job. You sure didn't hear that from either Mav or myself.
STOP right there,, DID I name anyone? NO I didn't,, So don't go off on me for it... Vers, If I mean you,,, I'll say you!

Do you realize that there are season ticket holders who don't even know who Calvin Johnson and Joe Thomas are? Believe me.........the majority of fans are not as intense as we are.
I agree, but I'm not sure what that has to do with the discussion....

True true,, but again, what's that got to do with whether or not Savage is worried about his job so much that he would pick a guy JUST to save his job?

Ahh,, I should have waited a moment and read a little further before asking what this has to do with anything...
I don't think that's necessarly true Vers.. I think to the knowledgable fan, drafting a LT that high is a sign that the FO "gets it".. and as far as the rest of the fair weather fans you refer too that don't know who Calvin Johnson or Joe Thomas is,, it won't matter.. if in the end, the Browns begin to win, they will all come on board.. (heck, they are on board when they lose LOL)

You know how much I hate agreeing with you right but you are correct, drafting those name brands will make some of the fans happier than a Joe Thomas.
But again, the knowledgable or even the Semi-knowledgable fan knows that no QB lasts without protection... We know that don't we (or did something change and I didn't get the memo).
SO if the regular fan base wants a Quinn or a Russell,, Fine,, I'm sticking with what I think is right for the Browns.. Which ironically, is what Savage should be doing!
Savage knows this one thing is totally true, Build it and they will come!
But for anyone to suggest that he is picking this guy or that guy JUST to save his job, that's just silly talk!
And again, I don't think I ever mentioned anyones name,,,,

Daman...........I think I was "asking" you WHO said that Savage would draft a guy just to save his job. I don't think you and I communicate very well. As someone who has a degree in English, that is extremely frustrating.

Several have Vers,, not sure who all off the top of my head, but you know it's been said... I was responding to a guy that didn't understand why some would say Savage would draft someone to save his job,,, But I was NOT responding to anyone who actually said that! As for you having a degree in English,,,well, there's our problem right there I have a 2nd grade edgimacation and I ain't that bright to begin with,,, But the few friends I have say I have a wicked good sense of humor!

If Crennel is on the hot seat it is our fault.
No..it would actually be Lerners..he was advised the timetable it would take to make the team competitive.. The media doesn't want Rac so a larger portion of the pressure comes from them.. Now where it gets sticky for Rac is in the area of discipline and maintaining a competitive edge..
I have not heard Lerner or Savage say any such thing. In fact they are saying the opposite. The ONLY way I see him getting canned is if he totally loses the team. And I would agree...for what needs to be done ..bringing in FA's and having solid drafts..those young players can sometimes immediately impact the team but at the same time they need to mature.. That takes some time..

So at this point it looks like Peterson or Thomas depending on what the Lions do at 2.

This does seem to be THE most likely scenario in this draft. Wheather people really like this idea or not.
JMHO
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

i'll never understand how drafting a certain player is the general manger trying to "save his job"
Nope, you'll never convince me that they will make a move JUST to save thier jobs...
exactly..
but my point is, if drafting brady quinn, or jamarcus russell is supposedly "saving his job", what happens if those guys don't pan out? his job is still toast....
if his job is truly in question, than he can save it by taking a player who can make an impact... and even if that works, we will still have needs, regardless of whether we upgrade the offensive line, quarterback, or defense...
as long as this pick upgrades a position, i'm fine with it....
i'm leaning more towards brady quinn, with joe thomas being the guy right behind him... those are my two guys, as stated in my signature...
i wouldn't have a problem if phil went with laron landry, because i believe he's the best defensive player in this draft, and we are a defense-first team, and it's a position where we could use another guy... (although i would hope he could swing a trade with another top ten team, that way you still get landry, and another pick, or some other piece...
i really like quinn though, i love his attitude, his work ethic, i love the charlie weis offense... while our line is bad (but upgraded a tad this year with the steinbach signing and some of the other smaller signings) i think brady could essentially make those guys better, by making the throws that charlie could not make, and getting his throws off quicker... that would improve the run game as well... quinn is very good on third downs, as well as in the red zone, 2 areas of the offensive game that we are just awful in...
if we go with thomas, we upgrade our line, and in 2008, look to be very set on the line, although i still think that we'll have to get a quarterback, because i don't think charlie can ever be a legitimate starter in this league... but having bentley back, thomas and steinbach in year 2 of playing with their line, would have 2008 looking very good...
we can't lose with either of these guys, they're both worth the pick in my opinion...

If we stay at 3 ..it deopends who's there..because if the Raiders take Russell, that leaves AP/Quinn/Thomas/Johnson for the Lions and us..I know the Lions don't want AP..and I doubt they take Johnson..so I would think they might take Quinn..in that case give me Thomas....

if russell and quinn are gone, that makes things pretty clear, you take thomas...
or try and switch up with the bucs, get an extra pick, and then take thomas...
