j/c Senators to NFL and Ravens: Punish Ray Rice more The day before the U.S. Senate adjourned for their annual summer recess, they rushed to get a few last words in on pressing issues such as national security, immigration and… Ray Rice’s two-game suspension? Yes. A group of senators addressed letters to Commissioner Roger Goodell and Ravens General Manager Ozzie Newsome on Thursday, calling for a harsher punishment on Ravens running back Ray Rice, the Huffington Post reports. The NFL suspended Rice for two games in connection to domestic abuse charges. “The decision to suspend Mr. Rice for a mere two games sends the inescapable message that the NFL does not take domestic or intimate-partner violence with the seriousness they deserve,” Sens. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) and Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) wrote in the letter (via Huffington Post). They continued: “Mr. Rice’s suspension reflects a disturbingly lenient, even cavalier attitude towards violence against women. We therefore urge you to take two steps immediately. First, reconsider and revise Mr. Rice’s suspension to more adequately reflect the seriousness of his offense. … Second, as it has done regarding drug offenses, the NFL must develop procedures to ensure that allegations and evidence of domestic violence are addressed appropriately. … We note that the NFL’s ‘Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse’ provides for a flat penalty of a four-game suspension (and up to a year’s suspension for repeated violations) for offenses that include ‘fail[ure] to cooperate with testing, treatment, evaluation or other requirements [or] a Positive Test.’ Similarly, standardized procedures and levels of discipline should be applied to incidents of domestics violence, which by many measures constitute a far more serious offense.” This is not the first time Congress has advised the NFL on league matters. I guess some want to have their cake and eat it to. You do realize that the government has not only given the NFL an anti-trust exemption but also given them tax exempt status. I am on the side that Rice got a big time break from the NFL...they can spin it anyway they want to - but it was published a while ago that the ultimate reason Rice got off was because they considered him a "GOOD GUY".
But...and this is a big BUTT!! The Senate should shut their mouths and get their own act together. This country is a mess...dont' lead the NFL - the NFL has their act together. Do YOUR JOB SENATORS!

My only point is you can't look to the government for special favors then not expect them to have some input into your choices. You simply can't have it both ways.
I don't disagree with what you're saying about the senate but I believe that's a debate for an entirely different forum.

Great, the government is involved. Our national debt is enormous and getting larger. We can't get our two parties to ever agree and instead label one another. Unemployment is sky high. Middle class workers pay for the rich and the poor while they do very little to support themselves. We have cities going bankrupt. China kicks our ass daily and then puts 6 "Made in China" stickers on each item they make just to rub our faces in how badly they are whupping us. And these freaking morons are weighing in on the punishment of an NFL player? Really? Personally, I am sick of hearing the Rice/Gordon comparison. People are making it black/white. One guy is older and has been in the league for quite a few years. He was never in trouble, that I recall, in college or in the NFL. The other guy has broken the rules time after time after time after time. One guy was apologetic and held himself accountable for his actions. The other guy says he was taking cough medicine and got high from second hand smoke. One guy has one offense. The other guy has multiple offenses. People keep saying this: "Uhmmm....duh....if you knock out your girlfriend you get one game and da....uhmmmm....if you are in a car w/guys smoking a joint you get suspended for a life." No uhmmmm dummmmms, that is NOT how it happens. LMAO...............Good God! Freaking people amaze me.

I'm not really comparing one to the other. Hitting a woman needs a stronger response by the NFL than it got, irrespective on JG's situation.
And do you really think the government should be expected to give the NFL tax exempt status and anti trust exemptions yet never say anything about their actions?

When you get a lot of work done, people are more inclined to look the other way when you goof off.

If the senators want rice punished then they should pass tougher laws that put men who beat women behind bars. NFL should not even have to worry about the guy because he should be in jail.

I would be more interested in what Maine's governor thinks about Roger Goodell and the NFL suspending Gordon for a year because his MJ test was 16.0 ng/ml or 1.0 ng/ml over the league limit of 15.0 ng/ml.
That's probably a little too much for the good Gov.to understand.
I guess Gordon would have been better off if he had knocked Ray Rice's fiance out cold...go figure.
