I think what Mac is trying to say is that the Bills defense wasn't really trying at that point, which was evident.
What football do you guys watch. Bills are fighting for their PLAYOFF Lives and you think they wouldn't really try with basically an entire qtr left (little over 12 minutes) It doesn't make sense. I didn't see any prevent out there. Now you say well it wasn't technically prevent but you have some special devise that measure's the HEART OF A TEAM...lol come on man, some things just aren't so. All be it one series...it was a good one. It was a simple one and it was executed well. I doesn't undo the next game and then some. But to say it doesn't exist and then paint it as a NONE positive conveniently by saying well it was against a Buffalo PREVENT D. And even worse well it was against a Buffolo's D that wasn't really trying. btw Tell that to Austin who went on the IR from the hit he took.
These guys were playing to win even with 12 minutes left.
So you feel Pettine and just about everyone else in the country was wrong in their assertion that Buffalo was running a relaxed prevent-type defense? And if so, does it bother you that our head coach is unable to tell the difference between a team playing a lax preventative defense and one playing for their playoff lives? but you have some special devise that measure's the HEART OF A TEAM. I don't know that I'd call a pair of eyes a special device, but yes, it's fairly easy to see when a team's premier or impact players are on the bench, and they're running base vanilla plays, and guys are going through the motions a bit I don't think those things are very difficult to see, nor do I think a team coasting with a healthy lead in the fourth against an anemic offense is a measure of heart.

I don't remember reading such articles although I know from history you can find anyone with that opinion.
All I know is I watched the game. I know what a prevent defense...btw I never heard of this so called made up "RELAXED" defense...lol
I don't rely on Bozo's to tell me what I saw.
If Pettine said that please educate me on it. Cause it does mean something.
But anyway I would appreciate if you could show me the presser. I'm sure if you say so it must have been said. But if I can read the entire quote and question I could understand it better.
Believe or not for me its not about being found right in my opinion - for me its about being CORRECT there is a difference. If I read it and the surrounding circumstances and feel that is his sincere evaluation instead of a reason to the press n fans for playing Hoyer vs. Colts. I will definitely state I was wrong in my evaluation. What I do know 100% that was not a prevent Defense. I've never heard of this so called "relaxed" defense.

btw I never heard of this so called made up "RELAXED" defense...lol Seriously? OK...well, in football, sometimes when a team has a comfortable lead in the later stages of a game, they don't try as hard as when the score is closer, or there is more time on the clock. They will bench starters, play softer coverages, run simpler base defenses, and guys won't run with the same high motor or give it their all, as they would if the game was tighter. If you'd like to see examples of this, you can look at the Bills defense during Manziel's drive, or the Browns defense at the end of the Pittsburgh game. Pettine said that please educate me on it. You can find a description of it in most recaps of the game, or find the direct quote from Pettine in a post game presser. They're usually available on the team's site. I would recommend starting your research by typing 'Pettine Manziel prevent defense' into Google.

The Bills game was not on TV in Columbus, so I could not watch. Don't remember any mention of prevent defense on the radio, though. And looking back, that drive started with 12 minutes left so it seems pretty early to fall into a prevent. Especially considering it was Manziel's first meaningful appearance, so I can't believe Buffalo was afraid of him throwing downfield. Even if they weren't playing prevent, though, they were seeing a QB for the first time that they had not at all prepared for.
Either way, Hoyer really forced the switch for the Bengals game by playing just awful against Indy. You can't go 13 for 30 with 2 picks and plenty of way off target throws in a game you came into knowing your job was in jeopardy.

Defense is the 4th quarter up multiple scores against a team that hasn't done anything all day? Yeah they are ganna "ease up" they might give up a few completions here and there so the clock keeps running..
Notice what happened after we scored, and then got the ball back.. Buffalo came right at us and we couldn't move again..

So you are saying they had benched their starters? News to me. I mean there is rotations with many but what you are describing is when in a laugher you take out your starters - that is not what happened at all.
A team fighting for their playoff lives will not back off with 12 minutes left 17 points is not comfortable. If you wish for me to believe that a strategy of a team that late in the season playing for their lives...will "RELAX" with 17 points so that the other team can make a game of it... sorry you talking like you actually know something?
Just defies logic and it doesn't make sense odds are it didn't happen.
I'll just have to trust my eyes not yours.
So once again your goal to somehow make me look bad. Puts you in a bad decor. Makes you look pretty close minded. Fact is the kid had one good series. Don't know if its about hate for Manziel or hate for me. Either way it is not logical. You paint a situation with under 5 minutes to play and with the Browns out of time outs. Except that its 12 minutes. So what happened with this imaginary put the 2nd stringers in, Prevent, not playing hard, relaxing and taking the win for granted, there was 8 minutes left with the Browns 10 points behind. Considering the Bills got in it with scoring 14 points like in 30 seconds.
Yeah I'm sure that was their strategy. Do you really believe that? Do you understand the magnitude of ONE GAME in the NFL out of 6 Especially at the 75% mark of the season.
You wish all to believe that a team would jeopardize their season to do what you suggest they did?
So I will stick with the theory if it doesn't make sense - it didn't happen.
Geesh please stop this nonsense.

No ones trying to make you look bad..
Teams with a lead playing soft at the end of a game is common knowledge..
It's basically how Colt McCoy built up half of his stats while he was here..

I just went at this with another poster. There was I think something personal involved.
This though I just do not understand. Its like there are a FEW or possibly a LOT I didn't take count that think that GOOD by Manziel all be it ONE SERIES does not count and have several theories. Similar to yours about a "SOFT DEFENSE"
I will say this again. It does not make sense that a team up by 17 points with 12 minutes left. Playing in an area of the season where this was actually their PLAYOFF LIFE DO OR DIE. Who in the 3rd quarter experienced a 14 point scoring spree in 30 somewhat seconds. Our defense was playing good. Our starting QB was having a bad game.
So in comes a first round rookie QB that the Bills had no knowledge about - you say with a straight face. OH they let him drive the field in less than 4 minutes and score without really blinking much. So that with 8 minutes left in the game they Turn around a stagnant MOMENTUM of choice cause they KNEW they had us - considering it was a very close game till that 2 TD 30 second period that happened in the 3rd quarter.
With their SEASON on the line they will ON PURPOSE...BY STRATEGY, RELAX and LOWER THEIR GUARD cause they just knew if we got momentum back they could reverse it at will.
Yep, and in several months the Easter Bunny will be hiding eggs.
I'll say what I told the other - Do you really believe that. In NFL football with parity and with momentum changers that with 12 minutes. A team who if they lost were OUT OF IT. Would play it that way? 5-4-3 minutes left I can see it happening. Not with 12? And with a QB who that had no idea what to expect.
By game day reports (after game I should say) the Bill Defenders stated they had no idea what to expect...they were told to take away and be more aware of the Boot leg. Nothing said about they knew they had an insurmountable lead and were confident. Come on if it doesn't make sense it didn't happen. Sorry I would fire my HC if he took the game for granted with 12 minutes left. Nobody does that unless the game is a laugher and the time has ticked down.

I really don't need a lecture on logic from a guy who resorts to "I trust my eyes, what do you know?" every time one of his flimsy arguments gets taken to the woodshed. Your logic is to take what you wish or want to happen, and then attempt to structure an argument around it.
There's no shame in that. It happens all the time with homers. But you can be so condescending and snarky, often when you're completely wrong. As I always say, nothing wrong with snark, just make sure you can back it up. You often can't.
I don't "hate" you, I'm not out to get you, or make you look bad. Anyone who's been here for any length of time knows I'm attracted to illogical arguments and people being condescending to others when they're incorrect, two areas that you frequent regularly.
Don't take it personal. I agree with you a lot. When you take your wishful thinking and attempt to make it a fact, I'll disagree. When you condescend to others while being incorrect, as you so often do, it's just red meat.

Manziel played well that series. Made a really good throw to Dray.
17 points is a lot, when we had 0 at the time, and hadn't done anything to show we would score any at all up to that point.
They gave up that TD. And then came back and kicked a FG to go back up 13 with 3 minutes left...

I'll just say that if I was a Bills fan and saw them "ease off" on defense with 12 minutes left in the game and a new QB, I'd be screaming at my TV to go at him.
That said, what difference does it make whether Buffalo was in a prevent or not? That's a legitimate question because I don't understand why it matters to whether Manziel is any good or not.

There's a difference between playing "Prevent Defense" and playing a "Soft" Defense..

Anyone w/a clue knows the Bills were NOT playing a prevent defense. Do you feel that Mike Pettine is clueless? Here's a link just for fun. Manziel replaced an ineffective Hoyer against the Bills on Nov. 30, and orchestrated an 80-yard touchdown drive, completing three of his first four passes for 54 yards. Pettine was impressed with that drive but acknowledged that the Bills were playing a prevent defense and that the sequence wasn't a true test of what Manziel might have faced against Indianapolis Link

Don't know about the other answers, but this one's a slam dunk: HOYER is responsible for starting Manziel. Sorry, but you can't stink as bad as Hoyer did for a whole month and expect to remain starter when you've got a multi-million dollar 1st round draft pick riding the bench behind you.
