Its pretty unwise of you to just Laugh at me and not even understand what I wrote.

What I wrote for those of you who are reading impaired.

"any of these retreads are our starting QB - we can win games but we won't win a championship."

That is what I said...now for you to some how I guess feel superior or something go and put your own spin on it.

Here is the fact...we ain't going to win a championship with those FA retreads. Our best chance is to look to the draft and the prospects that come from there! Right now the only one of those we got is Manziel If the Browns give up on him and draft another...so be it. Yes, our only hope is for Manziel to succeed. If you wish to relish sitting in your own stinking Ignorance and laugh...so be it.

Until we get another prospect its all we got. My personal opinion is Manziel is going to be a lot better than most think. But that is my personal opinion and a lot of hope as that is the way I do my fandom. But even if I'm correct it doesn't mean he turns into THE GUY either.

Defense wins championships. Watson play your butt off!
Go Browns!

I know this is racist, but isn't Hartline a slot receiver? If he is, do we really need another one of those?

Nope. Actually his best attributes are his speed and his ability to make plays on the boundary.

It was just racist, lol.

Wouldn't bringing in Hartline negate having to resign Miles Austin and we essentially have a more healthy WR with the same skill set?

If that is the case, would bringing in Hartline and Cecil Shorts round out the WRs and be a fix of the situation? I kinda like the idea of Shorts, Hartline, Hawkins, and Gabriel with a little bit of Benjamin thrown in. While the prototypical #1 WR wouldn't be on the roster, I think that is a solid group with good hands and route running.

You aren't allowed to compare white receivers to black receivers or black receivers to white receivers. That's against the rules.

Hartline is way faster than Austin.

Austin is a very tough over-the-middle type receiver at this point in his career.

LOL! Would it make a difference if Hartline got a tan from his time in Miami?

IDK, I see Hartline as an improvement. While Austin was clutch on 3rd downs in traffic, his health is a concerning factor. How much more wear can his body take?

I believe (and trust) that as well. Understandably, a lot of posters are down on Manziel, but it seems like he is making a sincere attempt to turn things around. He is raw admittedly, but also has significant skills and potential...

On a somewhat different note... what is the board's opinion of bringing Michael Sam into camp? I don't really care one way or the other just an idle thought.

Pretty good free agency primer:

Quote:
CLEVELAND -- Having a healthy salary cap is the NFL equivalent to having too much oatmeal, or having too many jackets in the winter.

Nice, sensible, necessary, not overly exciting.

If Cleveland Browns fans are looking for good news after a brutal two months, it’s this -- a team with a pretty good roster has $53,777,486 in cap space as of this week, according to ESPN stats and info. The Browns have a cap value of $106,604,471, with the adjusted cap value sitting at $161,908,285.

With help from J.I. Halsell (@SalaryCap101), a former Redskins salary-cap analyst, here is Cleveland’s exact spending situation:

As it stands (before player cuts and new signings), the Browns must spend roughly $71 million in cash over the next two years to be compliant with the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Why?

Because the CBA requires NFL teams to spend at least 89 percent of the cumulative salary caps from 2013-16, which, for the Browns, projects to $492.17 million in spending by the end of the 2016 league year.

How much have the Browns spent during that span?

To date, Cleveland has spent or committed to $420.99 million. Splitting in half, the Browns could spend $35.5 million in each of the next two years. Or, if they are feeling aggressive, spend a cool $50 million before September. The Browns likely want a larger cushion of space for next year.

For argument’s sake, let’s say the Browns are entering March with plans to spend about $40 million in the next eight months. There is a reasonable plan for such spending. All free agency deals are one-year totals while assuming the signing bonus is prorated over the length of the deal.

Rookie draft picks: $7.9 million.

This takes into account the Browns’ two first-round picks and the rest of the lot. This is essentially money all teams must pay, give or take a few picks.

Free agent quarterbacks: $8 million.

Sorry, Sam Bradford fans. Don’t expect the Rams to part with him without at least a second-round pick in their hands, maybe more. I’m not expecting the Browns to offer more than a third. They want to stay true to the build-through-the-draft plan.

There is no obvious home run out there, so the Browns will do what they can -- $4 or million for Josh McCown, maybe $5 million for Brian Hoyer, or $6 million for Ryan Mallett. The Browns have discretion here, but no quarterback will command enough to stress the team's books.

Splashy free agent signing: $8-9 million -- Buffalo outside linebacker Jerry Hughes

Mike Pettine is a fan of Hughes, who acquitted himself well against Joe Thomas in the Bills' Week 13 win against Cleveland. Thomas had three penalties in that game. Pettine, a former Buffalo coordinator, spent one season with Hughes, who seems the perfect complement to Paul Kruger's strength game and Barkevious Mingo's lateral speed.

In this case, filling the outside linebacker need in free agency allows the Browns to attack nose tackle, wide receiver, and tight end high in the draft.

If Hughes commands $10 million a year, that is probably too steep for a draft-precedent team. Getting him for $8 million would be a win for the Browns.

(Free agent fallback: Baltimore WR Torrey Smith at $7-8 million)

Restricted free agent tenders: $6 million

The restricted tender numbers aren’t out yet, but my guess is a first-level tender -- a placeholder where an opposing team must relinquish a first-round pick to cut a deal with the player -- will be somewhere in the $3.5 million range, with a second-level tender around $2.4 million, and a third-level in the $1.5-million range (just projections).

If the Browns truly believe safety Tashaun Gipson is a cornerstone in the defensive backfield, they will either slap him with a first-round tender or cut a long-term deal now. If the Browns give him a second-level deal, no doubt Gipson’s camp will shop him around.

Linebacker Craig Robertson could get a second-level tender. Both players are valued, and it makes sense to keep them.

In-house free agents: $7.5 million -- Cornerback Buster Skrine at $5 million a year (possibly higher) and Miles Austin at a one-year, $2.5-million deal.

Coaches have made clear they would like Shrine to return. Skrine will have a good market, but the Browns should be able to make a competitive play for him.

Austin would be a reasonable re-sign. The offense was better with him in the lineup.

Otherwise, I’m suspecting the team will let most free agents walk.

Special teams: $2 million for Ted Ginn

Give Ginn, an effective returner and Cleveland native, a two-year deal with a couple of million up front in signing and roster bonuses.

Total cap spending: $40.4 million

Bottom line: The Browns could spend on a receiver, but it’s hard to imagine Dez Bryant, Randall Cobb or Jeremy Maclin leaving their current spots. Smith might command closer to $8-9 million, a bit pricey for the Browns’ taste. Hughes is a safer play. Draft a receiver in the first and fourth rounds, re-sign Austin, and ride with what you have.

Hartline is an extraordinary athlete. He is extremely fast and was an awesome hurdler in high school. I remember him schooling us in the 2013 opener, or was it game 2?

I think he had a couple of 1,000 yd seasons had around 250 yards in one game. I do think he suffered a PCL towards the end of the 2013 season and I believe he makes around $6-$7 million a year. Maybe that is why he was released.

If the PCL checks out, he would be a good signing...........which means we will ignore him.

In athletics, and maybe other endeavors, potential typically means that the guy has a lot of talent, but hasn't lived up to that talent yet. He has underachieved. People might still believe in him because of his great athletic potential, but he has demonstrated that he has fulfilled that potential. Thus, they might take a shot on him.

There was one coach who had a great saying about potential. It might have been Pettino, but not remotely sure about that. He said something like------------when I hear a guy has potential, I know that he hasn't done anything yet.

I wouldn't be opposed to bringing back Austin and looking at bringing in both Hartline and Shorts to couple with Gabriel and Hawkins. Sure there's no stud there but that's five reliable high % receivers who can create open looks and have somewhat varying skillset.

Report: Pernell McPhee A Browns Target

According to a report on Orange and Brown Report, and Lane Adkins who does a great job covering the team, the Cleveland Browns are interested in Baltimore Ravens free agent to be Pernell McPhee:

Quote:
“Pernell McPhee – The Baltimore Ravens are attempting to re-sign the pass rushing defensive lineman prior to March 10th, if unsuccessful, the Browns are an interested party to fit into their pursuit of a pass rusher. McPhee has been best served in a situational role, which wouldn’t be quite out of the question in Mike Pettine’s rotating defense in Cleveland.”

Adkins doesn’t report things with out good solid information so you can take this to the bank. The issue will be whether the Browns are willing to pay handsomely for a player being described as a situational guy. Being able to steal a guy away from the rival Ravens is always fun to think about and has worked out pretty well with Paul Kruger.

On the other hand the Browns have a few holes that they will be looking to fill in free agency and there are quite a few teams with a lot of cap space, which could push up the price on some of the free agents. If McPhee is limited to just a pass rusher there is still a ton of value. On the other hand those assets could be used for a Mike Pettine former player in Jerry Hughes, a player that is a bit more complete than McPhee.

The free agent market is an interesting one this year. There are quite a few wide receivers, offensive linemen and defensive linemen. There are a couple pass rusher that might interest the Browns but those players are almost always paid a premium.

Jimmy Haslam has stated that the Browns are unlikely to be as big of players in free agency as they were last season. Last year they had three big signings: Donte Whitner, Karlos Dansby and Andrew Hawkins. Could the Browns stay quiet even though they have needs and the cap space? Could Haslam just be trying to use the media as a smokescreen for an aggressive off-season.

As it is, Adkins tells us that McPhee could be a target for the Browns. He fills a need to go along with Barkevious Mingo and Kruger, likely replacing free agent Jabaal Sheard. Could the situational pass rusher become something more in Cleveland? Can the Browns pull in Hughes or another outside ‘backer instead? Will the team be aggressive in free agency? A lot of questions, answers will come soon enough.

he said almost the same thing the year before and we ended up with kruger and bryant.

it could be owner speak or 2-3 high signings isn't considered big players to them.

i am looking for us to sign a few on defense to bolster the run D anyway.

"big players" is a relative term if that is what he actually said-- I forgot. Who really knows what that means. Also, according to reports, they have to spend $71M over the course of the next two years. Sure, I'd like to think so of that money goes to guys already on this team but I'm sure they'll pursue a handful of big names with the hope of luring one or two.

I don't want the Browns to be 'big players' if it means spending like Washington or the Eagles a few years back. I think that is careless and has proven to be ineffective at winning and certainly being able to keep talent you drafted. Fill a starting spot or two, look for reasonable depth, then turn all remaining focus to the draft.

Farmer says that’s the key to winning – finding young studs in the draft, not the often fools gold appeal in free agency.
“We’re really focused on building through the draft,” Farmer said. “You can’t keep going and buying and putting guys in front of guys. Because if you go out and spend a lot of money on a guy, you expect to see him playing. To go out and draft a guy that’s not going to play doesn’t make a lot of sense.”

I like the quote and I feel he believes this. But from my understanding, the Browns must spend close to 50 mil. in cap space during this off season and next. So despite what's being said, quite a bit of money has to be spent.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I'm sure much of that will be used to resign the guys that we want to keep.

I do agree with the build thru the draft approach. Its the only way to go imo.

I also understand the other side of it, where you can't bring in a bunch of free agents. If you do this then you have less roster spots for guys to develop.

I believe that this is part of the reason we didn't pick up cribbs. Sure we might get a good year from him, but thats about it.

If we cut some kid to sign him then what? What if that kid we cut would have broke out in year 2 or 3? Now we just lost a bunch of productive years from a player because we didn't give them a chance to develop.

Stopgap should only be if you think you can make a run with a short-term fix.

J/C Here's a guy i'd take. Eagles offensive lineman Todd Herremans. Right Guard/RT. Just what we need. I would free us up to draft a few skilled players earlier, and draft linemen to develop.

I know when we talk about FA spending we always mention Daniel Snyder and his crazy spending...But if you look for teams in the playoffs and Superbowl a lot of them have spent a lot of their cap room as well and it worked out for them (of course most of them drafted well too) But you see even spending all that money, they too have multiple methods of splicing that salary off the books...Not saying let's blow $100mill in salaries...but let's try to make our team as competitive as possible, while upping our starters and improving depth in a lot of areas...all I know is whatever we have been doing hasn't been working

Like when New Orleans ended up signing Jarius Byrd, most wondered how they even had room too..

Now they make have to cut Colston, and they definately need to redo Brees' contract..

Denver somehow went on a defensive spending spree last offseason, getting Talib, Ware, and Ward..

New England's had a few offseasons where they've spent money, they've also acquired people via trades.. they also occasionaly don't draft very well though..

Helps to have a HOF QB..

I can't argue the fact...an elite QB will make the whole offense look better that's for sure. We've gone 16 years without an elite QB and we've been horrible...sadly I don't see an elite QB landing to us anytime soon.

Our only chance of striking a home run would have to be the method the Ravens did...Run smash mouth runs, have a good game manager at QB, and have a cut throat defense...

Whatever we have done since 99 has never worked...lone season was 2002 when we went hog wild on the cap, and made the playoffs...Following year we had to make alot of salary cuts and finished 5-11 (sadly a pretty decent Browns season lol)

Not saying to spend the cap limit or go nuts with it...but let's try to at least improve this team and its weaknesses.

Its like this if you spent $1,000 on food to place in your pantry at the beginning of winter...at the end of the winter there's going to be a lot missing. You are going to have to make some odd concoctions with what you have left to make a complete meal..Now if you spend $2000 on food for your winter pantry. I won't say its going to be perfect at the end of winter...but you will have a lot more choices to plate up, and still to some degree a lot more selection
