IMO, throwing good money after bad. Any wind I might have had in my sails after a 7-9 comeback season has vanished. These guys (Browns' FO) just don't seem to get it.

McCowan has worked with our new OC in Oakland. He must know his system. That bodes well for both him and Johnny because if you think the team is giving up on a first round QB draft choice after 1 season you are kidding yourself. I don't know if that has ever happened.

McCown is what? Maybe 35-36 years old. He was real happy to get a 3 year deal. Hoyer was probably wanting 5 and a boatload of signing bonus, etc.

Face it, Johnny Manziel is still the future of this team at QB. Not saying how that is going to work out, but it's stupid to think we are not going to give him a real shot before we move in another direction. McCown is here to maybe start but mostly to help Manziel.

His "system"? Dude doesn't have a system as far as I can tell. He came in saying we'd do a little of this and a little of that. He'd keep some of Shanahans stuff and insert some other things.... basically a hodge podge type deal. And McCown knew the Oakland system so well he went 2-7 as a starter that year. I have no real problem with McCown as a backup if he'd REMAIN a backup. But in Cleveland our backups ALWAYS play. And with tiny Johnny as our starter McCown will likely play early and often. Yikes!

McCown more likely OK being a backup than Hoyer. Farmer/Pettine will do everything they can getting Johnny Manziel to start next year. Why? They are betting their job on it! No GM or HC employed starts a journeyman over a first round pick. I can assure you Farmer will not draft a QB in the first round this year. How can an owner trust a GM who can't judge talent? How can an owner trust a HC who can't get a first round QB ready enough to be a backup? Everybody and his brother knew QB was a important pick last year. Farmer/Pettine stated Johnny is their man.

It's show time!

I doubt anyone is betting their job on JM.

More than likely they have assurances they will keep their jobs IF they start JM. Just so the experiment can end.

Two semi-good things that I've seen that have come out of the McCown signing:

Quote:
It appeared Josh McCown was headed to Buffalo. It took old-school recruiting by #Browns to secure him. Pettine, Haslam, Defilippo did work

Link

At least guys are willing to listen to us when there are other options. Buffalo is clearly the better spot for a veteran QB and he chose us instead (I wish he hadn't).

Quote:
In a classy gesture, #Browns HC Mike Pettine and GM Ray Farmer contacted Hoyer to let him know they were going to sign McCown.

Link

In the long run this literally means nothing, but is nice to see that our team has at least a little class.

I don't think McCown was brought in to start at all. I think this is the year the QB job will be handed to a player (Manziel) with no real competition. I think this is the sink or swim move for Manziel. If he stinks it up or gets injured again then McCown will finish the season. Either way, we forfeit the season for a shot at the #1 pick in the 2016 draft where we will have dibs on the best QB prospect coming out.

There is nothing about this move that shows that they are trying to improve when we have to square off with a tougher schedule than what we faced last year.

Some may not agree, but the fact that they WANTED McCown, as opposed to just signing anyone, to me is a good sign..

I guess there is always a first. Hard to image Haslam does a 180 and defy what other owners have done for years.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I really hope you are wrong. I don't see how a job can be handed to any player who played as poorly as Manziel did last year. Not to mention the fact that he is currently in rehab. Manziel was horrible last year and that was after spending the entire off-season/season "preparing" to play football.

My only hope is that we bring in one of the other free agents QBs to compete with McCown. I don't see it happening, but that's what I'm hoping for.

Maybe McCown is insurance policy for when we sign Jake Locker?!?!?

I simply don't see where making a dramatic improvement at QB was ever an option for this year. We plug the hole and improve the team in other areas. We see what we have in Manziel, and if he isn't the answer, we address the QB future when we have a better set of options.

I agree that this isn't a "choice" by the FO. I think MCown is a possible fill in if Manziel doesn't play well or gets hurt. I really think they are not thrilled about the QB choices this year in the draft and that they are eyeing their guy in the 2016 draft. Besides paying an arm and a leg for a trade up, I'm sure they understand that even if they wanted Mariota or Winston they are way out of reach.

Curb Your Enthusiasm.

But Oh, the excitement. What a battle for who starts.

It's one thing to have a QB in the bottom half of the NFL as a starter.

It's quite another to have no one on the team who has ever been a NFL starter.

I bet the the Ravens and Steelers are just quaking in their boots.

Oh the pain, the pain. Will the Browns ever get a quarterback who can hold down the position for tens years?

I know that there was not much out there but geez.

Please just take someone in the draft to watch. The idea of McCown and Manziel going into next season is like waving a white flag.

Except for before the 2014 season when both Hoyer and Manziel played like poop during the preseason and then Hoyer was named the starter.

I am to the point on Manziel I am not going to place odds on if it is good money or bad money. All I am saying is you can be darn sure we are going to place the money there. I think every team that has ever had a dud QB selection has stuck with the guy at least 2-3 years. The reason is there have been lots of really good QB who had 2-3 dud seasons before they finally figured it out. So like him or not, it is what it is.

For some of the longer tenured board members, many may recall I didn't like Tim Couch. I was on his ass after nearly every game, but not the first couple of years. Truth be told, I was glad when we drafted him, just like I was glad when we selected Johnny. So now, we have to see some real play time. If he still sucks like he has after 2 games and we are now 20 games in to the expirement, sure, time to move on. As I said then, the only thing worse than a blown pick is sticking with a blown pick.

I know we want quick answers, but it just doesn't work like that. I wish it did. I also wish I had a wallet that no matter what always had $100 bill in it....how cool would that be?

Yeah, people think that this is the final step. McCown is the bridge. Before this signing, we had no QB. Now we have a journeyman level starter to lead this team for next year, hopefully until Manziel, or the next QB. is ready to start.

He had a good year 2 years ago in Chicago. He completed 66% of his passes and threw 13 TD to 1 INT. Do I expect him to be a great QB? Absolutely not. However, do I expect that he may be able to do what we expected Hoyer to do last year? I think that he could. We want a QB who can lead the team, manage the offense at the line, handle handing off a lot and make a throw here and there when needed. Hoyer or McCown is very little difference IMHO.

While I don't expect him to be Brady or Manning in their primes, I do think that McCown can be an effective bridge. He also wants to be here, which is very important as well. Hoyer evidently wants a ton of money, so we got another guy who is similar, but for a lot less.

So why not keep jon AND Hoyer?

Again I ask - why skip off to a 10 year, 12 year scrub, when Hoyer was given the equivalent of 1 year?

I get tired of "we need a new qb", "we need a new front office" "we need a new coach" "we need a new owner"........why? Because we don't give anyone time to grow! Over and over and over. It's the same thing - do it and do it THIS year, or we'll go get someone else that's never done it.

Continuity. Apparently it's not understood in Cleveland.

What makes you think Hoyer "wants a lot of money"? How would the Browns even know that, they never met with his agent or him this off season. All he did was go 10-6 as a starter. You think Josh McCown will go 10-6? I don't, I think he'll go 3-13 or 4-12. Yippee-ki-yay, happy days are here again.

What does Hoyer do better than McCown? Also, we are still judging QBs off of the team's record? If that's the case, Vince Young is available.

Anway, here's the official press release from the team:

Quote:
The Browns have agreed to terms with veteran quarterback Josh McCown, general manager Ray Farmer announced Friday.

McCown, 35, spent the past season -- his 12th in the NFL -- with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he started 11 games.

“Josh is your consummate professional,” Farmer said. “He’s known to be a great guy in the locker room and will be great for the quarterback room. He knows how to get an entire offense on the same page and get a team to rally behind him. He has been exposed to a lot of different types of offenses and we think still has the drive and skill set to be a successful quarterback in this league.

“We are excited to get him and believe he will help continue to move us in the right direction and help us build the type of team that will bring winning football to Cleveland.”

McCown said he’s excited to step into an environment where he can simultaneously compete for a starting job while mentoring the Browns’ young quarterbacks.

“I just want to serve our team and help everybody in that locker room, do my best to help everybody in the locker room be better at their job and they're going to help me, too. It's a two-way street,” McCown said. “I'm just excited about coming in and being a part of a team.

“Year 1 was a solid first year for coach (Mike) Pettine, and to see the vision with what he's got going on is exciting to me. In my room, I want to be able to help those young guys and pass along my knowledge and experiences I've had and help them grow.”

McCown added he’s “going to compete at the best level I can to help our team get better.”

“We're going to be good at running the football and playing defense and being smart with the football at quarterback,” McCown said. “Those are the things I know are going to be stressed. Those are the things I'm going to be focused on as we compete.

“As a quarterback, it starts off with the offensive line. You look at the guys they have there, namely, Joe Thomas and Alex Mack, it's a rare opportunity. Between meeting with the coaches and having a good connection with Coach Pettine and the offensive coaches, and those pieces on offense, that's kind of what drove the ship for me.”

McCown, who hails from Jacksonville, Texas, threw for 2,206 yards, 11 touchdowns and 14 interceptions last season for the Buccaneers. He missed five games with a thumb injury.

McCown thrived in 2013 when he was summoned to starting duty with the Chicago Bears. He accumulated the majority of his 1,829 yards and 13 touchdowns over a stretch of five starts during the second half of the season. During a three-game stretch in late November and early December, he threw for 348 or more yards in each game and eight touchdowns overall.

“Josh is a high-character, savvy, veteran quarterback that has a lot to offer to our team,” Pettine said. “When you hear from people that have been around Josh, they speak of the leadership qualities and the positive impact he has on a locker room. I really enjoyed spending time with him during his visit. He has great passion for playing the quarterback position and wants to show that he can still be successful in this league.

“Obviously, he is a quarterback that has been in a number of systems and he has worked with (Browns offensive coordinator John DeFilippo) so there is some good familiarity between the two. We are excited to have him become part of our team and we look forward to him playing an important role in our offense.”

A third-round pick in 2002, McCown spent his first four seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, working primarily as a backup until 2004, when he started 13 games. McCown threw for a career-high 2,511 yards and 11 touchdowns that season and followed with six more starts in 2005.

After his time with the Cardinals, McCown spent a season apiece with Detroit (2006), Oakland (2007) and Carolina (2008). While he was with the Raiders, McCown worked under DeFilippo, who was the Raiders’ quarterbacks coach at the time.

After a one-year stint with the UFL’s Hartford Colonials, McCown returned to the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers in 2011 before joining the Bears later that season.

What does Hoyer do better than McCown? Also, we are still judging QBs off of the teams record?

Ask me those questions when McCown beats Pittsburgh and Cincinnati next year. You won't, because he won't.

So you don't have a real answer?

Just take the emotion out of it and you will arrive at the same conclusion as I. Honor Spock today. Think logically. Every move we have made to this point is to help Johnny.

A most "LOGICAL" post..and a breath of fresh air from all those on here going for the shower curtain rod. McCown is no answer and the brass knows that, he is a backstop and there weren't alot of options out there.

Who knows? Could be. Think Josh will mentor manziel?

Maybe Hoyers problem with mentoring manziel was manziel didn't want to be mentored?

Maybe the problem was Hoyer didn't have a doctorate in substance abuse?

Who knows.

John is doing what he needs to do. As far as we know.
