I remember draft day and when the Browns picked Hughes in the 3rd round everyone was like, "who?" I was in that group that didn't understand the pick and thought it to be a reach. I'm happy to be wrong because he deserved an extension. He was a high motor guy that made an instant difference to the interior line.

Great signing! thumbsup

Well it's good that the RB position is devalued and that this is a pass-happy league! tongue

Yeah that's all Billy said. The responses from other followers were related to the Hughes signing, it was probably the timing which folk thought were related but a bit of a stretch maybe.

Tweets were supportive of Billy saying he was next etc but I'm not convinced his post was even related to Hughes at all.

They probably want to make sure he's not 500 pounds.

More like they want to make sure he is. Short and fat is the ideal DE in the NPD.

But you're right. They've likely spent enough now to stand pat and meet the cap floor. Goodie. Because this team is perfect as is. We sure don't need any talent messing up a good thing.
Let hope they are done in FA. Cap room is far more important than winning.

Concentrates HOW? 31 Sacks?
Man, what defense were you guys watching last year? NO pressure. Fricken Ryan Mallett starting his FIRST game beat us. We let him stand in the pocket all day long. Do you really think that is focusing on the pass? Having half the defense stand around HOPING the secondary will make a play is NOT great pass defense. Unless Pettine figures out a way to generate some PRESSURE, he's not going to be around for long. 31 sakcs SUCKS. It's pathetic.

And why don't you tell Seattle that the RB position is devalued.... Or Philly. Or Dallas now that they don't have a RB. And why not tell OUR running backs that they aren't needed anymore. They only scored SIXTEEN touchdowns last year. I know, those don't count right? Well, here's hoping we go back to scoring 2-3 every year. With our weapons at WR and TE we don't need any stinking rushing touchdowns.

Can't stop the run, can't get pressure on the QB.... and that's exactly what you guys admire about this D? Well, happily for you, that's probably not going to change. So you should really enjoy this upcoming season. Watching teams run the ball down our throat, and watching opposing QB's stand in the pocket all day long. Doesn't get better than that. That's playing like BROWNS.

Sacks are the only way of knowing if we pressured a QB.

Also, even by your standard, we ranked very well in pass defense.

What's your point? There is not one, other than to complain. *SNARK*

Yeah, you're right. Why complain. We played perfectly last year. Certainly nothing at all to complain about in Cleveland.
Sacks SUCK. They ruin the game. All defenses should avoid them like the plague. 31 was WAY too many. If Pettine works really hard we can get that number down below 20. That should thrill you on Sundays.

If our defense was SO damned great, how come we didn't make the playoffs? We were the best in the league, right? We DOMINATED on D all year. Right? We KILLED QB's RIGHT? *snicker*

Excellent, I like Hughes a lot, if we can stay healthy on the DL we have some really good talent already here and with "maybe" a FA pic-up and defiantly a high draft pick this will be a formidable group ... JMHO thumbsup

That is pretty standard. It's not impossible for a player to sustain injury or contract some sickness since the last physical.

In 2013, the Browns were 23rd in points allowed, at 25.4 allowed per game. In 2014, under Pettine, in his 1st season and with holes remaining on the defense, we improved to 21.1 PPG, good for 9th in the NFL. Last year the other teams in our division were ranked 5th, (Cincy)12th, (Baltimore) and 14th. (Pittsburgh) Again, we were 23rd.

Some will whine about the schedule, but let's look at our division in 2013. (we all played largely the same schedule with just a couple of different games) Baltimore was 6th in the NFL in 2013, allowing 18.9 PPG. Cincinnati allowed 21.5 PPG, good for 12th in the NFL. Pittsburgh was 18th, and allowed 23 PPG. Again, we were 23rd at 25.4 PPG allowed.

We improved a great deal in a very important area. We did this with a defense lacking that premiere pass rusher that Pettine wants. (Look at Buffalo for what he wants to develop here as far as pass rushers) Look at a guy like Jerry Hughes, who was just really a guy in his 1st 3 years. Then Pettine and O'Neil got hold of him, and he turned into a double digit sack guy. Look at Kyle Williams in 2013 compared to any other year of his career. These guys made major progress under Pettine.

That gives me hope for our defense. We are missing pieces, and some we have just don't fit, but I think that Pettine and O'Neil get the max out of these guys. I look forward to next year.

There are soooooooo many things to complain about, yet you pick the one thing our team was good at, pass defense. That tells me you are a troll.

Wow! Did Pettine cut you from the H.S. Squad or something? LOL!

While it took a while for me to warm up to his defense, I saw improvement in coverage and in turnovers. Like a poster stated before, the points allowed improved significantly. Also, with the eye test, it seemed that the redzone defense improved as well. For comparison's sake, I think we had more pressure from Horton's defense but coverage schemes were easily overcome by offenses.

Oh, and if you read and listen to any of the professional analysts, they will all tell you that we are in a pass happy league. While certain teams still rely on a strong running game; the majority are throwing the ball around to achieve points on the board. You give me Seattle, Dallas, and Philly and I will give you Denver, New England, and Indy. Of the past 6 Superbowl winners only 1 (Seattle) was running a ground dominant offense at the time.

However, I do prefer the smash-mouth, pound the rock offense and think winning consistently happens in the trenches.

I remember Hughes getting drafted in the third, and he was not even on the sportline list that I track with that goes 350 deep. I was not pleased.

But Heckert was right, and I was not. He is a legitimate NFL player, and gets his second contract. I am happy for him and the Browns. Hughes earned it.

Maybe YTwon is troll? The guy actually said something like this......

...some will WHINE about the schedule, but...Wait! What? Is he trolling when he makes such an asinine comment? No one really believes that saying our schedule was weak this year is whining, do they? brownie

OldColdDawg .... there is nothing to discredit me about. I know what a hypocrite Vers is. Very simple. I don't respond to him - but I see his comments on the requotes just like you posted above and I have no problem continuing to point out what a bi-polar poster he is. He definitely stalks me though - because whenever I make any post (most are not about him) he's there right behind me quoting me even though he knows I have him muted. So know doubt he will continue to make his snide little comments and act all innocent, and I couldn't care less.

Yeah I remember on draft day...John Huges?? He actually played pretty good however I know he was hurt last year...and recall him getting pushed around in the first ravens game last year near the goal line..I don't know if he was at full health...but I hope we can regain our health as we had it bad last year. Specially the Dline
