If you're calling past Browns OG's average, then yes he's above average. He's solid and has no glaring weaknesses, but I wouldn't say he's great at anything. I'm really not trying to knock Greco, he's been good for us. Erving can be better.

Erving better bring his lunch pale if he wants either RG or RT position.

That's your prerogative. He definitely didn't look it after Mack went down.

I agree with you, bugs. Greco/Schwartz/Bowie aren't going to hand anything to him, but he has some great traits.

There had to of been better options at WR. Less "project" type people.

If we saw better WR's don't you think we would have drafted them?

Plus, he has only been a receiver for something like 3 years. He is still developing, and the coaching staff can really work on molding him into what they want him to be.

I liek the pick, and I think that he is going to be a very useful part for the team.

I am not picking on you. Honest. But, that is the same thing many said about Greg Little.

You can either catch it or you can't.

I think it was a dumb pick.

I will say that if he becomes a good player, I will admit I was wrong. However, I bet there won't be too many guys who will admit they were wrong if he ends up sucking.

I've seen this movie before.

You have a fair point except that there are players who have learned to catch more consistently.

I look at a guy like Mike Wallace, who was a guy who dropped passes in college. He let too many passes get into his pads as a college player.

Antonio Brown "needed to become more consistent catching the ball in a crowd".

Demaryius Thomas dropped too many "very" catchable passes in college, and ran sloppy routes.

Randall Cobb "needed his hands to be more consistent", and had "only adequate ball skills".

Kenny Stills "has concentration lapses, and will drop easy passes".

Brandon LaFell "Suffers from lapses of concentration which lead to drops."

The list goes on. (taking the top receivers in the NFL last year, and working down. All comments are from the 1st scouting report to pop up on a Google search.

Mayle has only 3 years playing receiver, and IIRC, playing football overall. Basketball was his 1st love, and he had to be talked into playing football. Now he is a football player, and he will have to work on his skills. If he does, then he has everything necessary to be a great WR. NFL's draft site suggests that he can be a starter in year 2.

I do think that receivers can improve their hands as they progress, even from college to the NFL. many don't, but I would think that those guys might be the guys who have played the position for a long time, and are set in their ways. Greg Little was said to have "big strong hands" and "great ball skills".

Some players are willing to do whatever it takes to succeed, and others are not. I think that Mayle is the guy who will work his butt off. He ran his drills at the Combine and did not drop a pass despite going through those drills with a broken thumb. That is incredible.

His 40 time may have been thrown off because he had to switch his starting stance from right hand to the left, because of the cast on his hand.

Here is a link to a site with numerous snippets from scouting reports, and many mention strong hands and good ball skills as positives.

I think that Mayle is a very interesting prospect, and I think that he will be an immediate contributor, and quite possibly a starter by year 2.I lie this kid more and more the more I read about him and watch his videos.

Mayle has a great attitude and a lot of physical talent. The thing tat bothers me is not the hands, but the pedestrian 40 time. And by "pedestrian," I mean he was walking by NFL WR standards. BUt apparently, he had a broken thumb, and somehow that affected his time. Weird, but ok.

It might affect his 40 time if it prevented a 4-point "track stance" like a lot of the WR and DB use for their 40s.

*Edit*
According to NFL.com, he ran 4.65, 4.52, 4.56 40's at his Pro Day. His Combine was the first time he ever ran a timed 40.

Let's not act like Mayle is some highly productive receiver because he is so great. He was in a system that averaged 64 pass attempts per game in 2014.

So let me get this right most of his good is negated cause the system had them throwing so many passes to him compared to other teams to their WRs.

Of course that same system would produced a lot more chances to have a stat like drops given to him...so I get it - ONLY THE NEGATIVES COUNT... pffft saywhat

Balls were thrown, he caught them... Isn't that the definition of production?

If he does that for the Browns, I'll be happy whether it's one catch a game or 20.. Catch what's thrown and I'll call him productive.

How do you see TE? He was a point guard playing basketball, not a power forward. He has similar measurables to Anquan Boldin, except he's faster. I think we are more likely to see him at halfback than tight end.

In my opinion Mayle was a good draft pick, I think his drops can be corrected because I think they stem from a lack of concentration. He doesn't always watch the ball all the way in to his hands and that stems from his playing basketball all those years, in basketball he could take his eyes of the ball to see what was going on cause the basketball was relatively easy to catch. As for his speed I believe he ran much faster at his pro day plus some people don't always run as well when they are being timed, remember the great Jerry Rice supposedly ran 4.6 when he tested out before the draft back in '85 and nobody ever called him slow when he played.

Stop it. He's going to be used as a WR who can also run block on the edges. This kid can flat out block. He'll knock the snot out of DB's.

After watching a highlight video on YouTube I actually feel a lot better about him. When I initially read his scouting report which included the slow 40 time and 19-drops, I was kind of disappointed and thought we could have found someone better, but he actually looks pretty good. I like his size, and it looks like he has good down field speed (after he gets a head of steam first). If our coaches and get him a little more polished with his routes and actually catching/holding onto the ball he might end up being productive.

It amazes me how irritated so many of you get when people voice their opinion. We get phrases that begin with, "Let me get this straight, ..." That is an attempt to discredit and demean the other poster's opinions.

It's so freaking old. Too many of you feel the need to defend EVERYTHING the FO does. They are ALWAYS perfect. They NEVER make a mistake. And ANYONE who says otherwise is a complete idiot.

If he really ran in the low 4.5s at his pro-day workout, then he might be a steal. I would not liken him to Carlton Mitchell. He's bigger, has a more athletic pedigree, having been a point guard, and Mitchell never caught 112 passes in college. We shall see!

Just saw the Utah tape...hands didn't look like Roberto Duran or anything. Scored two TDs. Excellent catch on the corner fade for the TD - with hands over the shoulder and held onto the ball going to the ground.

Willing to block...that QB was pretty bad.

Actually I also was pretty impressed with the CB from Utah #15 when he played press...later in the game was playing off and that is where he slipped for the Mayle 2nd TD.

If he responds well to coaching...he should be a good prospect for us.

I doubt anyone who led the nation with drops last year would be called a "steal", but I'm just still not on board with this selection.

I hope the staff is right, mainly in Hartline and Bowe, that our WR core isn't as bad on paper as we (most of "we") perceive it as.

Good golly that offense sucks. QB...pee...U! Mayle should fit right in Cleveland!

I thought Vince played ok in a very crappy environment. In the the three videos, kid is constantly mauled. Vince does well catching ball in traffic. He isn't afraid to block. Played special teams. I saw nothing fantastic. At the same time, I saw a gritty kid. He gets more schooled handling contact I see potential. I get the reference to Aquin Boldin.

Not directed at you, bugs... but I find Berea's comparisons to Boldin with this kid laughable. Boldin's ability to catch an off-target pass is ten times what this guy has shown in his career so far.

None taken!

Mayle was in a bad place. I watched the videos. Offense was not good. I felt sorry for Vince. Cleveland drafted. He went from a high passing offense that wasn't good to a an average offense wanting to run.

Watch this kid. He either breaks out being a stud or gets frustrated. I hope this kid is hungry. At least Vince is in good company. Browns receiving corp is built around blue collar lunch pale dudes!

I feel much better taking a chance on this kid. To me, he seemed trapped. From the videos, he ran the play not giving up. That spoke volumes as far as I am concern. I bet the kid has mental game. Love his special teams play too. I saw nothing that couldn't be fixed.

Vince Mayle to have surgery to repair broken thumb
Pat McManamon, ESPN Cleveland Browns reporter

BEREA, Ohio — Cleveland Browns rookie receiver Vince Mayle will have thumb surgery following rookie camp, coach Mike Pettine said.

“It should not be an issue in the fall,” Pettine said Saturday.

Mayle broke his right thumb at the Senior Bowl. The Browns had him run routes during camp to see if there was any lingering discomfort. When there was, the decision was made in favor of surgery to fix the issue.

“We expect him back full for training camp,” Pettine said.

Mayle was the only receiver drafted by Ray Farmer the last two years. He was this year’s fourth-round selection.

I want to say something here. (well, a couple of somethings)

1) Mayle is not a track star, but man, I sure see a lot of highlights where he is running away from defenders. There were reports that Mayle had not been a guy with a lot of experience running from the chocks, and then he had to switch his lead hand. There is probably a reason why his 40 time looked considerably slower than his playing speed. Further, according to nfl.com., Mayle ran a 4.65, 4.52, and 4.56 at his Pro Day.

2) Mayle broke his thumb at Senior Bowl practice. He had 2 catches for 33 yards in that game, despite the broken thumb, and also carried the ball once for 3 yards.

http://scores.espn.go.com/ncf/boxscore?gameId=400751619

The Browns probably checked the thumb, and figured that it would either heal on its own, or would need surgery, and that neither would cause problems with the young man's long term prospects. I believe that teams are only allowed so many medical evaluations, and that players are only subjected to so many medical exams. If someone else has evidence to the contrary, then please post it.

I have read scouting reports that are all over the place on this kid. Some see him potentially as a 2nd year starter, and others see him as a guy who may never develop.

Here is a snippet from his nfl.com profile:

http://www.nfl.com/draft/2015/profiles/vince-mayle?id=2552431

BOTTOM LINE Evaluators seem sure that Mayle is a moldable piece of clay who can become substantially better as a pro with more coaching and experience. Mayle clearly needs work with some of the basic fundamentals for the position, but with his size and an ability to win vertically, he has a high ceiling. He might need a redshirt year before he is ready to contribute consistently.

http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/dsprofile.php?pyid=129194&draftyear=2015&genpos=wr

03/01/15 - Broken thumb limited top receiver in drills...Washington State wide receiver Vince Mayle, the most productive pass-catcher invited to the 2015 NFL combine, was limited in workouts there by a broken right thumb. According to a source close to Mayle, the 6-foot-2, 224-pound receiver suffered the injury while participating in the Senior Bowl. He initially thought the injury was a sprain and played through it. Despite the surprise of the greater severity of his injury, Mayle participated in several of the workouts at the combine, including the all-important 40-yard dash and the pass-catching portion of the workout.

Man, he broke his thumb, played in the Senior Bowland then also participated fully in the pass catching portion of the workout? That is impressive, and shows his desire to succeed IMHO.

http://www.nepatriotsdraft.com/2014/12/2014-15-draft-prospect-all-underrated-team.html

WR Vince Mayle, Washington State: I’ll go on record right now, this guy is going to be productive at the next level. Currently a mid to late round pick, Mayle has had a monster season without many people noticing. He lost about 20 pounds this year, which has had a great impact on overall quickness and route-running. Good size at 6’3 220lbs, Mayle should be on Patriots’ fans minds heading into mock draft season.

I only added this site's comments because he seems to do pretty well on the draft from year to year.

http://profootball.scout.com/story/1531484-vince-mayle-player-evaluation

While some media types credited Mayle’s performance to being a product of the system, it also helped that he had a quarterback in Connor Halliday that was averaging 430.3 aerial yards per game before the passer broke his leg and missed the final three games on the 2014 calendar. Mayle had averaged 12.61 yards via 80 catches with Halliday at the helm. When the QB was injured, Mayle “amped it up,” averaging 18.23 yards on 26 receptions in those last three games, including 252 yards on a career-best 15 receptions vs. Arizona State.

There is a lot to this report. The writer is :Dave-Te’ Thomas is a sports writer, talent evaluator and scouting personnel consultant for a majority of teams in the National Football League. Thomas runs a scouting information service called NFL Scouting Services and produces THE NFL Draft Report, a publication provided by league headquarters to the media in preparation for the NFL Draft.

He is largely complimentary towards Mayle.

Then there is CBS Sports:

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/2079732/vince-mayle

One of eight FBS players to collect triple digit catches in 2014, Mayle is much more than simply a product of Mike Leach's offensive system.
A former basketball player at the JUCO level, he is viewed as a hybrid tight end by some scouts, but showed more natural receiving traits as a senior and although he's not quite as gifted as Louisville's DeVante Parker, Mayle is a prospect in the similar mold. It's clear he's still learning the tricks of the trade and his passion for football needs to be addressed, but Mayle is an easy player to get excited about with his size, athleticism and the upside his talent suggests - projects as a NFL starter in year two.

So, there are a lot of reports out there that really like this kid a lot. I did not know that his starting QB missed games at the end of the 2014 season. That could have contributed to drops. I don't know what his drops came with regard to the season. The one report did say that he actually upped his production when the starting QB was hurt.

I love a lot of things I read about this kid. I also read that Mayle had never run from the chocks before preparing for the NFL draft. I will see if I can find the article. I cannot right now, but i will look for it.

OK, I cannot find the article that said that he was not familiar with running from the chocks, so I will withdraw that for now.

One thing I did not realize is that he had his pro day outside, in the rain, because the indoor facilities were in worse condition somehow. crazy

Connor Halliday, Vince Mayle stage outdoor Pro Day in Pullman - Spokesman.com - April 2, 2015
http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2015/apr/02/ex-cougs-wing-it/

PULLMAN – Neither Connor Halliday nor Vince Mayle have had an easy journey from Washington State to the NFL, so it was fitting that during a Pro Day workout in front of NFL scouts and executives on Wednesday, the two former Cougars did it the hard way.

Such workouts are usually conducted indoors but because of poor lighting and worse turf in WSU’s indoor practice bubble, Halliday and Mayle elected to stage the workout outside on the practice field.

That meant a little rain, plenty of wind and temperatures hovering just under 40 degrees.

From the same article:

After posting an uninspiring 4.67-second 40-yard dash at the combine, Mayle’s biggest priority on Wednesday was showing the 13 scouts – including three receivers coaches – that he has the speed to outrun NFL defensive backs. He did so on his final attempt, clocking in unofficially at around 4.5.

“The time doesn’t really concern me that much,” said CBS NFL draft analyst Rob Rang. “If he can run in the 4.5s, 4.6s at 222 pounds, I know he’s got hops, I know he’s got lateral agility to make people miss and I’ve been impressed by his work ethic. When he signed there were all these questions about his commitment to football and I think he’s answered those questions.”

This one has been reported more often:

Mayle ran just a 4.67 40-yard dash at the combine. A broken thumb contributed to the slow time—Mayle changed his stance at the start of the sprint so the injured hand was not on the ground ....

Mayock: “Mayle played basketball in junior college for two years before going to Washington State. What I see is a really athletic kid who still doesn’t really know what he’s doing. He’s speed deficient. He ran a 4.67 at the combine. But I don’t see that on tape. I see a faster player on tape. He had 15 catches for 252 yards against Arizona State. Based just on that one tape, he’s worth a late draftable pick to me. I think he’s a raw developmental wide receiver who has no idea of what he’s going, but has the size and athletic ability to develop.’’

I started reading all of this stuff about this kid, and that is why I think that he is going to be a nice piece for us, especially after he develops a bit.

I think we should temper all expectations for the kid and check back in on him in a year. There are a lot of reasons to be excited about him, but the same was said about Carlton Mitchell.

There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

You're welcome. I am excited about the kid, and think that he could even be a strong piece on special teams this year, even if he doesn't make a big contribution at WR this year.
