Past that I see a lot of people critical of Farmer because he didn't draft their favorite Fantasy Football player.

Then, you are looking at things through jaded eyes.

Fantasy football players? Really?

I think Bitonio has been better than Mingo. I like Shelton's potential. However, the draft we got Mingo in was very poor.

And I will add that I like Mingo better than both Gilbert and Manziel, who were drafted in the first round like Mingo was.

You gonna disagree w/that?

I think most people expect Mingo to be a 10 sacks a year player. He is not but he is a decent OLB. I like Mingo as a player. He gets a bad rap because of expectations.

Why?

You sound as dumb as those who praise every move Farmer makes.

In fact, your post was even dumber. You offered no football talk, you just say that he "sucks."

That is stupid.

No, I don't.

I try to make rational points to support my assertions. I do not just say someone "sucks."

Let's face it, the majority of the posters on here are pro-Farmer and they don't have much of an argument, thus they pick on individual posters.

You saying Farmer "sucks" w/out any proof or logic makes the rest of us look bad. Argue fairly, or you are just as irresponsible as they are.

Farmer is not GM material. He missed on his 2 1st RD picks from 2014
He inherited a roster that was in the bottom 5 talent wise in the NFL thanks to 2 previous regimes that failed.
With that said that made Farmers job difficult with alot less for margin of error.
The fact that Farmer drafted a QB who had no play book in college.never worked under center and he signed a player to play WR for the first time in a league that favors vertical passing through rule changes tells me all I need to know.
He's clueless as a GM.

You left out the signing Big Phil to big contract with lots of guaranteed money then cutting him not long after. We got lucky that Taylor bailed Farmer out on that one.

Gee, that is enlightening and unusual.

We are on a Brown's board.............how freaking unique is it to root for the Browns???

I think too many of you confuse rooting for the Browns w/blind acceptance.

An analogy. While I am a patriot, I would have never went along w/the Nazi plan of exterminating Jews and other minorities. I believe that my love of the country would still be intact while disagreeing w/the regime in charge.

I am NOT comparing Farmer to the Nazis. I am simply saying that one can still love their team while not agreeing w/the moves made by those in charge. And I believe that blind faith is very, very dangerous.

What if I were really mentally ill? Would it be cool to make fun of me?

We can't say a word about gays, transsexuals, or other minority groups, but it's cool to make fun of the mentally ill?

Sounds hypocritical to me.

I have no problem w/you bashing Farmer. I am simply saying that you should provide evidence as to why you think he sucks rather than just saying he "sucks."

Let's face it............the majority of posters on here are pro-Farmer. They excuse every move he makes. When you say something like you just did, they will pounce on it and lump the rest of us reasonable posters into one neat group.

We have facts on our side. They don't. Don't give them any ammunition.

Play fair. Is that too much to ask?

J/C .....

Coming into last season, we had disastrous units at WR, RB, and ILB. Absolutely disastrous.

Our RBs were ..... Edwin Baker ..... and no one. Well, we had McGahee ...... but .. we had no one who could run the ball. Our WRs were ..... Travis Benjamin and ...... no one. Our ILB were a horribly overpaid DQ, and a struggling Craig Robertson.

Now, as things turned out, we are back to being thin at RB. However, it is all but certain that we will add another guy soon. We have Crowell, who is better than anyone we had in 2013 ... but Duke Johnson has injury concerns, and this unit definitely needs some help. However, it has been upgraded.

WR was Josh Gordon, once he finished his suspension, and before he started his next suspension, and that was it. Greg Little was a mess, and Davone Bess was a dumpster fire.

These 3 units were an absolute mess coming into 2014.

It is hard to rebuild multiple units in the same off-season. I would argue that Farmer did a solid job of rebuilding all of these 3 units for 2014.

Anyway, a GM will ultimately be judged in 2 ways .....players he adds, (draft and free agency) and wins. I think that we will be improved this year, so I think that he will look good in that regard ..... and it remains to be seen how most of his players look.

I will say that it is a concern that from last year's draft, we have 2 first round picks who are 2nd string or lower, (much lower for Gilbert) and a guy we dumped for a 7th round pick. (out of 6 picks) Desir is a backup, and that is no shame given our starters ..... and Kirksey and Bitonio are starters. (and Bitonio looks like a 15 year starter type)

If Manziel busts, and Gilbert never gets going, this draft will be a major disappointment, no question about it. The only thing that keeps it from complete disaster status is Bitonio and Kirksey.

Long term, Farmer will have to do much better than this. I like this year's draft, except for the Erving pick in the 1st, which I felt could have, and should have been a weapon, not a 6th OL.

It does seem that Farmer did better in free agency than the draft in year 1, and that's not surprising given his experience was in that area before last year.

So far, for last year, I would give Farmer a C-, with the potential to go to an A if both Gilbert and Manziel turn things around, or a D- if they do not. (I can't give an F if we get a long term, upper level starting OL in Bitonio)

The texting stuff was idiotic. It was nowhere near his area of authority, and the coach is parallel to him in the chain of command, not below him, so this makes even less sense. It appears that Pettine was really ..... ticked ... about this when it happened, but they appear to have worked out their issues. I do not think that Farmer survives a 2nd similar incident.

It was reported that, when he was here, Banner wanted assistant coaches to report directly to him rather than the head coach ... somehow ...... so Farmer taking that to an illegal level is a major concern ... but hopefully it is now a settled issue. Like I said, I don't think that farmer survives a 2nd such incident.

Time will tell.

That is rather unfair.

First of all...............we traded the 3rd pick in the draft [TRich] so it is understandable that position would be weak. We did make out in that trade, though. How is that even debatable? We got a first round pick for a guy who is out of football. Are you criticizing that move?

DQ was not as bad as you make him out to be. Not even close. Is he out of the league? Or, did he start for a playoff team? Answer the question. Out of the league or did he start for a playoff team?

How freaking refreshing.

Bonefish wasn't talking football. He had an emotional meltdown after the West trade and started a thread to bash Farmer. My two year old had a meltdown tonight when I told her it was time for bed. His post reminded me of that.

Bonefish doesn't like Farmer because bonefish didn't have a first round grade on Manziel. His thread was nothing more than an airing of his grievances. I'm sure he celebrates Festivus as well.

Why talk football with someone who's having a meltdown?

I accept that we had Trent, and that it was a good trade to get value for him. I said so at the time. However, that move was made with no plan as to what to do beyond that move. (at the position) McGahee was a train wreck, and the position was never even remotely addressed until late in the year with Baker. Part of being the GM is to have a plan before you make moves. If you trade a guy, have a plan A and a Plan B and C for replacing him.

I could not care less who DQ started for. Do all playoff teams have superb players at every position? Of course not. We had an OL last year, whose name I have blocked out of my mind for all time, who started for the Seahawks in the Super Bowl the previous year. Was he a great player because he started for the Seahawks for much of the season, on a very good unit?

The words he chose had more football in them, but he didn't start the thread to talk football.

He's upset about Farmer being the GM and the West trade put him over the edge. Considering his documented feelings for Farmer, the thread was almost predictable.

Answer this question honestly. What do you think bonefish's motivation was for starting the thread? A new thread, mind you, on a topic that is already talked about ad nauseum on here all the time. To talk football and discuss the merits of Farmer? He could have done that in any number of threads that are currently running. He wanted to highlight his displeasure, get the pitchforks out, and see how many he could get to join him. Sorry, his words had some football in them, but I don't think discussing football was his intent.

Decent points.

I think his intent was to question Farmer. He did use football points.

I think your intent was to protect Farmer. You did not use football points.

He criticized the Browns. He did not criticize any posters. You, on the other hand, did nothing but criticize another poster.

Thus, his post has more worthiness than yours.

Talk football, Rish. You are capable of it. Stop w/the warring crap. Just talk football. I actually like your takes. I don't like it when you insult people for having a freaking opinion on a freaking message board.

Ok, name a single poster who has said that Farmer was not guilty of Textgate and that he did nothing wrong...

Bet you can't because one of the biggest lies perpetuated on these boards is that there are posters who think Farmer can do, and has done, no wrong.

Well, what do you think of these moves:

Using a 3rd, 4th, and a 6th on a guy you traded for a conditional 7th rounder? Good, bad, or horrible?

Picking Gilbert w/the 8th overall? Good, bad, horrible?

Passing on Bridewater for Manziel? Good, bad, horrible?

Stories emerge about Terrance West, part of Browns bad draft record

Posted by Darin Gantt on September 7, 2015, 6:23 AM EDT

In the wake of the Browns trading running back Terrance West to the Titans for a sack of beans, comes the predictable story of what a bad teammate, guy and running back West was.

Via Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Browns had grown weary of West’s “inconsistency on the field and immaturity off of it.”

(Of course, the same could be said of the Browns themselves, but we’ll get there in a minute.)

West led them in rushing last year (allowing them to chase off a productive but grumbly veteran in Ben Tate), but that never translated into this year, when West had to play most of the preseason finale with the scrubs. But this story doesn’t center on football, rather the kind of ex post facto character assassination common with failed picks.

West is described as having “maturity issues,” and “wasn’t well-liked by some in Berea” and “not exhibiting the professionalism the Browns were seeking.”

Yes, because the high standard the Browns have set can not be sullied in any way.

It’s worth noting here that they seemed OK with West a year ago, when they traded up to take him in the third round of the 2014 draft. They sent a fourth- and a sixth-rounder to the 49ers, so they could move up to 94 to take the Towson State star, ostensibly so the Ravens wouldn’t at 99.

Of their 10 picks in the 2014 draft, they have two starters (left guard Joel Bitinio and linebacker Chris Kirksey, second and third-rounders). They haven’t gotten much from the guys they moved up to get in the first round, cornerback Justin Gilbert and quarterback Johnny Manziel.

Of course, this is also the same team that just used a fourth-round pick this year on wide receiver Vince Mayle, who was so bad in the preseason that not only was he cut, but he wasn’t invited back to the practice squad.

So maybe instead of texting his coaches during games in the future, maybe suspended General Manager Ray Farmer could solicit texts from Mel Kiper, Jr. and Mike Mayock on draft day.

Farmer is a horrible talent evaluator, no doubt about that, but he only wasted a 4th+6th for West. He traded up from our early 4th to the end of round 3, paying a 6th.

The real scandal is not what he gave up, it was actually a cheap uptrade, but who he left on the board for West at the same position. Devonta Freeman will be the starting RB for the Falcons this season. Anyone who took 10min to watch both on tape knew who was the better runner.

Oh, but Manziel over Bridgewater still takes the cake. It's also the reason I completely lost interest in the Browns. It was one of those moments, like the Winslow/Roethli draft or the Mangini draft, where I knew that it would take another 5+ years to recover from, but this one finally broke me, probably because it wasn't only the incompetent GM behind it but the owner too....and you can't get rid of owners as fast

But Farmer isn't helping. He's had 4 1st rd picks and 3 won't start this season. How bad is that?

Not to mention two of those were undrafted free agents, totally under the radar.

I'm still waiting on this draft class and the likes of Gilbert and JF before I call for Ray's head or not.

...and I still hope you end up right, Mourg, but I don't see it yet. Manziel is really trying this year and still looks pretty bad to me. He just doesn't have the talent to be a QB in this league. He flashes playmaking ability, but so does Tebow. I said pre-draft that Manziel is the evil-Tebow, all media hype, but little substance and so far that has been verfied.

Back to Farmer, I'm still positive that he's still the GM only for PR reasons. Haslam's reputation was shot and he just couldn't fire his second hand picked GM within 12 months. That, and maybe Farmer has some blackmail leverage on him regarding the Manziel pick (homeless guy and all).

Arguing who has been better among Heckert, Banner and Farmer is really futile, as they've all stunk it up for the most part, while having their moment on some moves/decisions. What they all have in common? Crappy first rd draft picks, I mean, look at this list of first rd picks from 2011 on:

Taylor
TRich
Weeden
Mingo
Gilbert
Manziel
Shelton
Erving

8 picks and one of them is going to start and probably only play 60-65% of snaps on defense. The rest is either elsewhere or won't contribute much. Incredible

I'm willing to give Farmer some slack on his first draft. He came into power late and took over under a cloud of uncertainty.

I imagine that the whole "character issue" vetting would be impossible to pull of in such short time and with so much to do.

In his 2nd draft, it appears we drafted few-to-zero head cases and in his second preseason he has shown a willingness to move on from his own drafted guys when they aren't a fit.

The boxer-bunching over a text(s) is more ridiculous than the actual sending of the text.

I'm willing to give him more time. If you wish to ask me why, I will refer you to re-read this very post.

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

We talk about Banner as though he were the GM. But he was not. Yet, he made the GM moves with the team's real GM hiding in the background. I don't know the history of the NFL Front Offices, but I'm betting that was the first time the CEO completely took over the GM job from day one while having a GM in the building.

Oddest dang thing I've witnessed in football FOs.
