The White House is considering executive action to restrict migrants’ ability to seek asylum at the US-Mexico border if they crossed illegally – a maneuver reminiscent of controversial action from the Donald Trump era and is sure to invite fierce backlash from immigration advocates and progressives.
The handling of the US-Mexico border has dogged President Joe Biden for years as migration across the Western hemisphere reached record levels and resulted in thousands of migrants arriving at the border.
The action being considered at the White House appears to be an extension of some of the toughest measures in the border compromise legislation tanked by Republicans—and another sign of the White House’s efforts to show they’re aggressive on border security ahead of Election Day.
No final decision has been made on the action under consideration, which involves using an authority known as 212f between ports of entry to try to clamp down on unlawful border crossings. An administration official noted that the administration often evaluates actions that could be taken, but they don’t always move forward.
It’s unclear how the proclamation under discussion would be executed and what, if anything, would be different from what was enacted during the Trump administration.
The Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel has been reviewing the proposed executive order to determine whether it could sustain legal challenges, a person briefed on the matter said. But some Justice officials have expressed doubts that proposed changes, aimed at trying to address previous court rulings against the Trump-era order, could survive litigation that is sure to follow any move by the Biden administration to use executive action.
A White House spokesperson did not comment on the actions under consideration.
“The Administration spent months negotiating in good faith to deliver the toughest and fairest bipartisan border security bill in decades because we need Congress to make significant policy reforms and to provide additional funding to secure our border and fix our broken immigration system,” White House spokesperson Angelo Fernández Hernández said in a statement.
“No executive action, no matter how aggressive, can deliver the significant policy reforms and additional resources Congress can provide and that Republicans rejected. We continue to call on Speaker Johnson and House Republicans to pass the bipartisan deal to secure the border,” he added.
Biden suggested earlier this month he would shut down the US-Mexico border if the proposed border legislation had been signed into law – effectively embracing one of the toughest measures included in the package.
“If the bill were law today, it would qualify to be shut down right now while we repair it,” Biden said.
Trump tried to close the US southern border to asylum seekers crossing the border unlawfully while in office, invoking provisions in immigration law, but was blocked by the courts.
In 2018, Trump tried to use 212f, which gives the president broad authority to implement immigration restrictions to restrict border crossings. But ultimately, a federal appeals court ruled that the authority conflicts with asylum law and the 212f authority doesn’t override it.
The case – known as East Bay Sanctuary Covenant v. Trump – served as an example of why the president is limited in his ability to shut down the border. It’s likely to face legal challenges if the White House were to move forward with it.
“President Biden has broad powers under the immigration statute, but they are not unlimited. Section 212(f) of the Immigration and Nationality Act allows a president to suspend the entry of noncitizens who are ‘detrimental to the interests of the United States,’ but that doesn’t mean he can just shut the border to everyone,” Stephen Yale-Loehr, an immigration law expert, previously told CNN.
Administration officials, facing dwindling border security funds, have also discussed whether declaring a national emergency could shore up funds, two sources said. The White House supplemental request includes $14 billion in border security but remains stalled in Congress.
The Biden administration has taken other steps to try to tighten asylum at the US-Mexico border. Last year, the administration released a regulation that largely barred migrants who traveled through other countries on their way to the US southern border from applying for asylum in the United States — marking a departure from decades-long protocol.
At the time, administration officials rejected comparisons to the Trump administration, saying that it was not a categorical ban on asylum and emphasizing efforts to expand access to legal pathways to the US.
Migrant apprehensions have dropped by 50% in January, compared to December, according to federal data. Homeland Security officials have attributed the decline to ongoing high-level talks between the US and Mexico, which has doubled down on enforcement, but have cautioned that encounters historically drop in January before ticking up again.
Acting US Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Troy Miller conceded authorities still face hurdles on the border, saying in a statement this month: “We continue to experience serious challenges along our border which surpass the capacity of the immigration system.”
In January, the US Border Patrol reported 124,220 encounters along the US-Mexico border. Notably, there was a significant drop in Venezuelans — nearly 11,600 compared to 57,851 in December. Both the US and Mexico have restarted deportation flights to Venezuela.

Teen suspected in attack on 2 NYPD officers in Times Square arrested again in Queens

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) -- A 19-year-old suspected of attacking two police officers in Times Square last month was arrested again after allegedly shoplifting and attacking a loss prevention employee of Macy's in Queens.
Darwin Gomez-Izquiel was taken into custody at the Queens Center Mall around 6:40 p.m. Tuesday.
Police say he was part of a group that stole $600 worth of clothing from the department store and punched the Macy's employee who was trying to stop them. The store employee suffered minor injuries.
Gomez-Izquiel was charged with robbery and petit larceny. The big question now is if a judge will set bail after he is suspected in two serious offenses in less than a month.
He had been arrested previously for his alleged role in the January 27 attack on the officers and was released without bail.
He was allegedly part of the group of seven who kicked and punched the pair of officers, an attack that was caught on their bodycam.
"Those who attack NYC police officers have zero respect for the law. This is EXACTLY what happens when our justice system fails to hold them accountable - they are emboldened to victimize other New Yorkers. He needs to be put back behind bars ... and kept there," the Police Benevolent Association said in a statement.
Earlier in the day Tuesday, a 17-year-old was arrested in the Bronx and was held without bail during a brief arraignment in Lower Manhattan on Wednesday afternoon.
Yarwuin Madris pleaded not guilty to second degree assault charge for his role in the Jan. 27 attack. Prosecutors, who are charging Madris as an adult, questioned the age he gave, saying they believe he may be in his 20s.
Madris was taken into custody in the Bronx in the company of two other suspects -- 21-year-old Wilson Juarez and 19-year-old Kelvin Servita Arocha. Authorities initially believed they were on a bus heading to the California/Mexico border after attacking the officers.
Those two are now being held by law enforcement pending their next court appearance in the officer attack.
"Yesterday the NYPD arrested another individual in the Bronx pursuant to an arrest warrant stemming from our indictment. Wilson Juarez and Kelvin Servita Arocha were in the same apartment when that arrest occurred - contrary to widespread misinformation they had fled New York City on a bus. Five of the individuals charged in this incident are currently in law enforcement custody, and our investigation with the NYPD remains ongoing," a spokesperson for Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said.
The eighth person arrested in the attack was picked up at the Randalls Island migrant shelter. Ulises Bohorquez, 21, is charged with assault on a police officer.
Meanwhile, the only suspect held on bail for attacking the officers- 19-year-old Yohenry Brito -- was able to post his $15,000 bail Tuesday and was released. It is believed that Brito's arrest outside the shelter sparked the larger assault.

I don't. He hasn't addressed immigration reform same as the president before him and every one before that. Executive Actions amount to hand waving at a problem. This board, in particular, has been collectively losing its mind over illegal aliens since I joined. COVID, economic downturn making the crossing less enticing).

In addition, the order directs the Attorney General and Secretary of Homeland Security to rescind a series of rules issued by the Trump Administration that implemented asylum agreements with Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras. Finally, the order rescinds President Trump’s memorandum seeking to end “catch and release.” President Biden issues another executive order directing the Attorney General and DHS Secretary to identify and rescind barriers impeding access to immigration benefits or the naturalization process. This review specifically considers President Trump’s public charge rule, which sought to prevent aliens who are likely to receive one or more public benefits from obtaining green cards. DHS releases a statement, “Equal Access to COVID-19 Vaccines and Vaccine Distribution Sites,” which calls for equal access to the COVID vaccine for illegal immigrants, and encourages all individuals, regardless of immigration status, to receive the COVID vaccine.
February 4, 2021 President Biden issues an executive order rescinding Trump Administration reforms to the Refugee Admissions Program. The order rescinds multiple directives signed by President Trump providing for enhanced vetting of refugees and giving state and local governments a say in the refugee resettlement process. February 17, 2021 House Committee on Oversight and Reform Republicans send a letter to Acting ICE Director Johnson requesting any final guidance relating to the implementation of the January 20th priorities memorandum; all documents related to how ICE plans to prevent recidivism by removeable aliens in the U.S. who have been arrested, but are not considered deportation priorities; and all statistics regarding the number of aliens deemed removable from the U.S. encountered by ICE since 2017 who have gang tattoos or who have been identified as a member of or an affiliate of a criminal gang. ICE has not responded.
February 18, 2021 ICE issues a memorandum reiterating the January 20th DHS priorities memorandum that limited the ability of ICE to enforce the law. February 19, 2021 DHS announces 25 individuals previously enrolled in MPP were processed at the San Ysidro Port of Entry and released into the United States. This group is the first of thousands of MPP-enrolled individuals who will be permitted to enter the United States instead of waiting in Mexico for adjudication of their claims. House Committee on Oversight and Reform Republicans send a letter to DHS Secretary Mayorkas on the impending health crisis at the border and the administration’s plan to mitigate President Biden’s border crisis. A suspect has been charged with murder in the death of an Augusta University College of Nursing student whose body was found on the University of Georgia campus.
Jose Antonio Ibarra, 26, who is not a US citizen, has been charged with malice murder, felony murder, false imprisonment, kidnapping and other charges in the murder of 22-year-old Laken Riley, police announced at a press conference Friday night.
Riley’s roommate called campus police after Riley went for a jog that morning at the university’s intramural fields and never returned. Her body was found a short time later in a wooded area.
She was unconscious and had “visible injuries” when officers found her, the University of Georgia Police Department said.
At the press conference, the police chief said Riley died of blunt force trauma. He confirmed that Ibarra did not did not know Riley and that this was a “crime of opportunity” and said there’s no further threat to the university community.

The arrest comes after a highly visible police investigation Friday that centered on an apartment complex just south of the wooded parkland where Riley’s body was found.
University of Georgia Police Chief Jeff Clark had said earlier “We’re not going to leave any rock unturned in this investigation,” noting there has not been a homicide on campus in the last 20 years.
“A suspect in the murder of Laken Riley has been taken into custody by the University of Georgia Police Department,” the university police said in a statement earlier today. “At this time, there are no indications of a continuing threat to the UGA campus related to this matter.”
A mobile command post was set up at the apartment complex and at one point, officers searched a dumpster at a gas station across the street. Police said surveillance footage led them to arresting Ibarra.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Athens-Clarke County Police Department joined the university police department in the investigation.

Ex-Trump Aide Points Finger at Former President for Laken Riley's Death
A former Donald Trump aide is blaming the former president for the death of Augusta University College of Nursing student Laken Riley, citing the Deferred Enforced Departure program (DED).
Riley, 22, was discovered on Thursday in a wooded area in Athens. The following evening, police announced that Jose Antonio Ibarra, a 26-year-old Venezuelan migrant, had been charged with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, false imprisonment, kidnapping, hindering a 911 call, and concealing the death of another. University of Georgia Police Chief Jeffrey Clark said Ibarra was not a U.S. citizen, adding: "Right now, I don't know his full status."
Citing multiple Department of Homeland Security (DHS) sources, NewsNation reporter Ali Bradley wrote on X, formerly Twitter, that Ibarra crossed into the U.S. illegally in El Paso, Texas, in September 2022. He was "released due to lack of detention space," but the claim has not been officially confirmed.
In a Saturday post on X, A.J. Delgado, a former Trump 2016 campaign aide, shared how based off the reported timing of when Ibarra crossed into the U.S., the blame is to be put on Trump.
"You're going to see a lot of #MAGA folks on here, who are claiming that #Biden has "blood on his hands" due to the suspect in the Atlanta-nursing-student's murder being an illegal immigrant from Venezuela who reportedly arrived in 2022. Except... #whoops: It seems *TRUMP* is the one to blame, if anyone is other than, you know, the murderer," Delgado wrote.
Newsweek has reached out to Trump's spokesperson via email for comment.
Delgado continued by sharing in a series of posts on X that the DED program, which Trump signed in January 2021 and offers temporary legal status to Venezuelans fleeing the humanitarian crisis brought on by Nicolás Maduro's regime, made it "enticing" for Venezuelans to make their way to the U.S.
"You see, on his way out the door in January 2021, one of the last things Trump did was carve out a special category for Venezuelans, same as Cubans...The point is, it was TRUMP who signed an order basically making it HUGELY enticing for Venezuelans to make their way to America [often via the southern border]. A year later, this guy came in," Delgado added.
According to the White House, under the program, the U.S. deferred for 18 months the removal of certain Venezuelan nationals in the U.S. It also allowed the Venezuelans to work during that time.
"The deteriorative condition within Venezuela, which presents an ongoing national security threat to the safety and well-being of the American people, warrants the deferral of the removal of Venezuelan nationals who are present in the United States," Trump said in a memo released on January 19, 2021.
Delgado's comments came after a host of Republicans blamed President Joe Biden, who continues to face bipartisan criticism over his handling of the U.S.-Mexico border as the country continues to experience a high number of migrant border crossings.
There were more than 2.4 million encounters at the U.S.-Mexico border during the 2023 fiscal year, up from roughly 1.7 million in 2021, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection data.
Republicans say the uptick in migrants is a direct result of Biden's border policies, which they argue incentivize illegal immigration. Other experts have said factors including political and financial instability in some Central American countries drive migration to the U.S.
Georgia Representative Mike Collins, a Republican, posted on X that Biden and Homeland Security Security Alejandro Mayorkas were responsible for Riley's death. He also blamed Athens' sanctuary city status.
"The blood of Laken Riley is on the hands of Joe Biden, Alejandro Mayorkas, and the government of Athens-Clarke County," Collins wrote. "The Venezuelan suspect in Laken Riley's murder is one of millions of illegal aliens that the Biden administration has released into this country to be welcomed with open arms by Democrat-run sanctuary jurisdictions. This man had no business being in America, much less the UGA community to brutally murder this young American while she was on a run."
Georgia state Senator Jason Esteves, a Democrat, countered with a post on X that stated: "Laken Riley's family deserves space to grieve without being used for cheap political points. Those who bring up border security should take that up with [Donald] Trump, who recently whipped Republicans in DC into shelving a bipartisan border security bill."

The killing of a nursing student out for a run highlights the fears of solo female athletes

Carol Capps runs regularly in the forested area of the University of Georgia campus, where the body of a 22-year-old nursing student was found earlier this week after she was reported missing from a morning run.
Capps, 24, said the trails around Lake Herrick always seemed safe, a place where she could get away from traffic and go into the woods for some mental clarity.
But that sense of peace was shattered after authorities on Thursday found the body of Laken Hope Riley and arrested Athens resident Jose Antonio Ibarra, 26, on suspicion of murder. The victim and suspect did not know each other, and University of Georgia Police Chief Jeff Clark called the killing a crime of opportunity.
“The scariest thing about it is it could have been me or one of my friends,” said Capps, a store associate at Athens Running Company. “It feels like a place has been taken away from me.”
Riley’s death has once again put the spotlight on the dangers female runners face. Previously, the 2018 death of University of Iowa student Mollie Tibbetts while out jogging prompted an outpouring from other women who shared their tales of being harassed and followed.
Crime statistics indicate that these types of attacks are rare, but they underscore the hypervigilance women must take when going out, even for a run on campus.
According to a survey by athletic wear company Adidas last year, 92% of women reported feeling concerned for their safety with half afraid of being physically attacked. More than a third of women said they experienced physical or verbal harassment, including sexist comments and being followed.
Running groups and women’s forums have offered tips on how women can try to stay safer while exercising: Run during daylight hours or with a friend; avoid headphones; carry pepper spray or a whistle; make sure your phone is charged; mix up running routes; inform a friend of your whereabouts and check in with them when you’re done.
But Callie Rennison, a professor of criminal justice at the University of Colorado who studies violence against women, wishes there was more emphasis on teaching men not to assault women rather than telling women what they should or should not do.
“I hope that women keep getting out there running, hiking, matriculating, climbing, working, and living their lives as they deserve,” Rennison said in an email. “While I lose hope on some days for us, what is the alternative? Trying to exist quietly doesn’t protect us either.”
Capps, who has been running since age 13, said she is careful to be aware of her surroundings. But she also does not think Riley could have done anything to ward off what appears to be a random act of violence.
“It’s unpreventable, I think, what happened to her,” she said.
Riley’s death has rattled more than just female runners, of course. Nate Stein, 23, a recent University of Georgia graduate who lives in downtown Athens, said he has run and walked in the area where her body was found.
Now, he plans to be more wary.
“It feels like a park — nothing bad should ever happen there,” he said.
Riley graduated in 2020 from River Ridge High School in Woodstock, a suburb northwest of Atlanta, where she ran cross country and was described as an outstanding scholar athlete.
On social media, women have dedicated their runs to Riley, expressed dismay that they still cannot go out without the fear of being attacked and said that they will keep on running.

Republican Speaker Mike Johnson admitted to Laura Ingraham on Fox News Wednesday night that he has been talking to Donald Trump "pretty frequently" about a possible deal being negotiated to fix problems at the border.
A bipartisan border deal was reached recently between Republican Senator James Lankford and Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer to solve many of the issues the country is facing at the southern border. Soon after, Laura Ingraham aired a misleading graphic on her show, cherry picking portions from the bill that would be most likely to anger hardline MAGA Republicans.
It worked.
Almost instantly, Johnson was pressured to denounce the bill and said that it would never reach the House Floor. On Wednesday, Johnson said, "I don’t think now is the time for comprehensive immigration reform, because we know how complicated that is." Republicans have been quite vocal in admitting that they will refuse to pass any legislation on the border that could possibly benefit President Biden.
Congressman Troy Nehls (R-TX) recently told CNN, "Let me tell you, I’m not willing to do too damn much right now to help a Democrat and to help Joe Biden’s approval rating."
It turns out that Republicans are not simply trying to help Donald Trump at the expense of doing right by the nation; they are working directly with Trump to sabotage any efforts to secure the border. And so is their propaganda network, Fox.

You don't need some new bill coming out of the the Senate to get the border enforced.

We don't have the text of whatever the Senate has cooked up yet. And so we have to reserve judgment, I think, to see what comes out of it. It doesn't sound good.

This is not the first time Republicans have done Donald Trump's bidding in Congress. In September, it was revealed that Trump was secretly orchestrating the sham efforts to impeach President Biden and investigate his son, Hunter.

Venezuelan migrant is charged with sexually assaulting a child in Virginia - just six months after catch and release by border guards in El Paso

Deputies in Campbell County, Virginia said they arrested an illegal migrant in connection with the sexual assault of a minor.
Last week, the sheriff's office arrested Renzo Mendoza Montes, a 32-year-old man, on a pair of felony charges that relate to the sexual assault of an underage individual.
The deputies say Montes is a Venezuelan citizen who has been in the country illegally since September 3 of last year when he crossed the southern border into El Paso, Texas.
He was detained and released by US Customs and Border Patrol and sent on his way.
It was first reported that Montes was being held without bond, but he is now believed to be in ICE custody.
Few other details are currently available about the sexual assault he allegedly committed, but his arrest is the latest in a string of violent crimes against US citizens by illegal immigrants.
Another illegal immigrant from Venezuela, 26-year-old Jose Antonio Ibarra, was arrested for the murder of 22-year-old UGA nursing student Laken Riley, who was found in a forested area last Thursday afternoon.
Ibarra was charged with felony murder, false imprisonment, kidnapping and concealing the death of another and was denied bond on Saturday morning.
But the grievous murder is not his first run-in with the law while in the US illegally.
Just five months ago, Ibarra was arrested and charged 'with acting in a manner to injure a child less than 17 and a motor vehicle license violation,' according to ICE.
The NYPD released him 'before a detainer could be issued,' the agency said.
New York City is also a 'sanctuary city,' which usually restricts law enforcement from complying with ICE detainers.
The slew of violent crime highlights the massive immigration problem currently facing the Biden administration ahead of thee 2024 election.
Last fiscal year, the Biden presidency saw the single highest number of encounters at the border on record.
At least 2.4 million migrants streamed across the US' southern border in fiscal 2023, and that figure just represents the encounters border patrol agents had - there are plenty of illegal crossers who did not come into contact with DHS officers.
That 2.4million figure breaks down to an average of about 6,575 encounters per day, some of whom, inevitably, go on to commit violent crime.
Liberal cities like New York and Chicago, where hundreds of thousands of migrants have been bused in from border states - an effort led by Texas Governor Greg Abbott - are increasing their pressure on the Biden administration to fork over emergency aid.
Several Democratic mayors are now asking for $5billion in aid, a significantly higher number than the $1.5billion the White House requested from Congress.
Capitol Hill lawmakers have spent the last many months unsuccessfully fighting amongst themselves over some sort of border policy that would stem the flow of illegal migrants into the country.
In December, DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, who was recently impeached by a slim margin in the Republican-led House, defended his efforts at the border: 'We do have asylum laws. We do have refugee laws. We abide by our international obligations that are longstanding.'
Referring to the legislation efforts of Congress, he said: 'Some of the proposals are reasonable and worthy of discussion. Others are, frankly, not.'

SUBJECT: Deferred Enforced Departure for Certain Venezuelans
The autocratic government of Nicolas Maduro has consistently violated the sovereign freedoms possessed by the Venezuelan people. Through force and fraud, the Maduro regime is responsible for the worst humanitarian crisis in the Western Hemisphere in recent memory. A catastrophic economic crisis and shortages of basic goods and medicine have forced about five million Venezuelans to flee the country, often under dangerous conditions.
This Administration has imposed sanctions against Maduro and his regime, and I have recognized the President of the Venezuelan National Assembly, Juan Guaidó, as the interim president of the country. The deteriorative condition within Venezuela, which presents an ongoing national security threat to the safety and well-being of the American people, warrants the deferral of the removal of Venezuelan nationals who are present in the United States.
Pursuant to my constitutional authority to conduct the foreign relations of the United States, I have determined that it is in the foreign policy interest of the United States to defer the removal of any national of Venezuela, or alien without nationality who last habitually resided in Venezuela, subject to the conditions and exceptions provided below.
Accordingly, I hereby direct you to take appropriate measures to defer for 18 months the removal of any national of Venezuela, or alien without nationality who last habitually resided in Venezuela, who is present in the United States as of January 20, 2021, except for aliens who:
(1) have voluntarily returned to Venezuela or their country of last habitual residence outside the United States;
(2) have not continuously resided in the United States since January 20, 2021;
(3) are inadmissible under section 212(a)(3) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) (8 U.S.C. 1182(a)(3)) or removable under section 237(a)(4) of the INA (8 U.S.C. 1227(a)(4));
(4) who have been convicted of any felony or 2 or more misdemeanors committed in the United States, or who meet the criteria set forth in section 208(b)(2)(A) of the INA (8 U.S.C. 1158(b)(2)(A));
(5) who were deported, excluded, or removed, prior to January 20, 2021;
(6) who are subject to extradition;
(7) whose presence in the United States the Secretary of Homeland Security has determined is not in the interest of the United States or presents a danger to public safety; or
(8) whose presence in the United States the Secretary of State has reasonable grounds to believe would have potentially serious adverse foreign policy consequences for the United States.
I further direct the Secretary of Homeland Security to take appropriate measures to authorize employment for aliens whose removal has been deferred, as provided by this memorandum, for the duration of such deferral.
The Secretary of Homeland Security is authorized and directed to publish this memorandum in the Federal Register.

Here are some other facts (except these ones are real, and not just opinions and unfounded predictions), just so we can wrap up your two day bender of TDS and close the book on your lies.
According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Ibarra and his wife entered the United States near El Paso, Texas in September 2022. After being arrested and released, his wife told the New York Post they were put on a bus and sent to New York.
Last year he was arrested in NYC for child endangerment. "At that point Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) could have taken Ibarra into custody, but according to a written ICE statement, “he was released by the NYPD before a detainer could be issued.”
He moved to the Athens, Georgia area where his brother was residing. A short time later, after Ibarra’s brother Diego had been arrested and released on a DUI charge, the two of them were busted stealing from a Wal-Mart. They were given a citation for misdemeanor shoplifting and let go.
The Clarke County Sheriff’s Office sent its policy on its communication with ICE. It indicated that “prisoners identified as undocumented aliens should not be detained solely on the basis of being an undocumented alien” but that otherwise, ICE would be notified, and it would be up to ICE to determine whether to request custody.
It's unclear if that communication occurred.
The sheriff’s office has yet to respond to a request for clarification, but the Department of Justice says it was unaware of Diego Ibarra’s prior arrest history until last week.
Last Thursday morning, he murdered (allegedly) Laken Riley when she was out for her morning jog.
Riley was a nursing student at Augusta University's Athens campus, after starting her college career at the much larger Athens campus of the University of Georgia. She was found dead Thursday after a roommate reported she didn't return from a morning run in a wooded area of the University of Georgia campus near its intramural fields.
Jose Ibarra, who faces multiple murder and assault charges, is also accused of dragging 22-year-old Laken Riley to a secluded area on Thursday, according to one of the affidavits obtained by CBS News. The allegation that he dragged Riley's body was filed to support the charge of concealing the death of another person.
Authorities haven't said exactly how Riley was killed, only that her death was caused by blunt force trauma. With the only specific statements being that "used an object as a weapon in the crime that caused blunt force trauma and disfigured her skull".
From what I can gather, what he said in the last 20 seconds or so said it all. I feel like it's one of the issues that has no end in sight, because both parties want it to be resolved on their watch and are hell bent on it not being resolved on the other's watch. This isn't the only issue, but it may be the biggest where that kind of dynamic is at play.

He was well-spoken in that second video and withstood up to a lot of scrutiny. It's an odd dynamic since he was a devoted Republican, on a Republican network, with a far-right host, and she attempted to put him on his heels, and he fought back. He did a good job addressing the discrepancy with the 5,000 people. She thanked him for explaining that discrepancy, but then went back and doubled down on the point she made before he explained how she was misunderstanding everything. He responded with "No" again when she misrepresented the figure, but he was not given the chance to re-explain how she was wrong, and then had to move on to another part of the bill.
I remember early on in this topic, I asked "Would a wall really be all that effective?" The response I received was along the lines of "Well, it would be better than nothing."

No it's not. You act like they're going to let these people free into the U.S. That's not what this bill says. They will be processed and sent back unless they reach this "new threshold" which is much more restrictive on who qualifies form asylum. The bill funds more immigration judges to process these people and once they get above 5000 people a day they can no longer handle the flow. Explain to me how that adds 5000 people into the U.S.? The added judges will make the hearing process move much more quickly and those who even meet the qualifications will get a much swifter hearing to determine if they even meet that status.
Your only point is that they will cross the border to be processed. By and large they won't be staying. Somehow that doesn't meet your unrealistic expectations and fear tactics of the far right extremists.

The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals late Saturday reversed a lower court’s ruling that halted a new state law allowing Texas police to arrest people suspected of crossing the Texas-Mexico border illegally.
The New Orleans-based appeals court immediately paused its order for seven days to give the federal government time to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. If the higher court doesn’t intervene, the new law could go into effect on Saturday as the legal battle continues.
The appeals court also said that it will schedule oral arguments on its next available date. As of Monday, that date hasn’t been announced.
The 5th Circuit ruling came a day after U.S. District Judge David Ezra in Austin blocked Senate Bill 4 from going into effect, saying the law “threatens the fundamental notion that the United States must regulate immigration with one voice.”

SB 4 seeks to make illegally crossing the border a Class B misdemeanor, carrying a punishment of up to six months in jail. Repeat offenders could face a second-degree felony with a punishment of two to 20 years in prison.
The law also requires state judges to order migrants returned to Mexico if they are convicted; local law enforcement would be responsible for transporting migrants to the border. A judge could drop the charges if a migrant agrees to return to Mexico voluntarily.
In December, the American Civil Liberties Union, the ACLU of Texas and the Texas Civil Rights Project sued Texas on behalf of El Paso County and two immigrant rights organizations — El Paso-based Las Americas Immigrant Advocacy Center and Austin-based American Gateways — over the new state law. The court proceedings come during a presidential election year when immigration has been top of mind for many voters. Former President Donald Trump has bashed President Joe Biden for his immigration policies, saying he has incentivized illegal immigration. Biden has created some narrow paths for migrants to enter the U.S. legally with policies that seek to deter migrants from entering the country illegally.
The SCOTUS has already ruled that immigration is under federal authority in the last lawsuit where it ruled Texas was interfering with Border Patrol doing its job. This is simply more political posturing by Abbott.

Ignoring the part about whether flying that amount of people into the country and turning them loose is a good idea or not... are they actually here illegally if they followed procedure and used the app? I read the article and I'm confused about 1 thing. Ignoring the part about whether flying that amount of people into the country and turning them loose is a good idea or not... are they actually here illegally if they followed procedure and used the app? IMO, making it so people follow the rules in terms of entering and potentially staying in this country is a key step to finally getting the illegal alien situation under control. We can definitely argue the merits of the how and how many in the situation laid out in the article and I'm not trying to get around that.
It would seem that they've created an end around to making it "legal". Amidst the millions crossing the southern border, Biden decided we still weren't harvesting enough new voters.
In short, they've made the CBP One app (meant to request appointments) a "pick me up at baggage" button.
They're just bypassing the entire asylum application process the same way they are at the border.
"Too busy to check, just come on in" means these people flying in are given immediate parole. The parole program allows for two-years of legal status during which adults are eligible for work authorization.
Here's how it works: CBP One tells them which international airports are available. Individual (or cartel) is responsible for travel to approved airport. Upon arrival, you sign into ICE wifi and apply for meeting. ICE picks you up and escorts you across to America. Since there is no way to accommodate asylum requests, individual is given automatic two year parole. Now "legal" immigrant picks any one of the 43 airports in the US to be flown to. (Don't worry, we keep these top secret to keep them safe)

The Biden administration has unleashed a new program to boost illegal immigration that allows immigrants to fly directly from their hometowns into a U.S. city of their choice, according to newly obtained records.
Instead of rushing the Texas border, the program lets immigrants use the administration’s app to pick a destination, buy an airline ticket, and fly in unseen on what amounts to ghost flights.
According to the Center for Immigration Studies, which sued the Department of Homeland Security for the documents on the program, over 210,000 have been processed since January. That is a population the size of Rochester, New York, or Des Moines, Iowa.
“DHS cajoles tens of thousands of intending illegal border-crossers per month to instead go on the CBP One smartphone application, and make an appointment with U.S. officials at land ports of entry instead of crossing illegally. After making an appointment, DHS invites these inadmissible aliens to walk over to the American side at the land ports, where U.S. Customs officials quickly ‘parole’ them in, allowing them to travel to a city of their choice in the nation’s interior,” the report from immigration analyst Todd Bensman said.
He has made a name for himself by reporting on the crisis from both sides of the border. This new report is among his most shocking, as the Biden team is dealing with a new emergency at the border in which tens of thousands are flooding weekly.
While those are seen by news cameras, those flying in directly are not. And the DHS is hiding where they are going. “U.S. Customs officers parole them into the nation, sight unseen, and in numbers publicly unknown,” the CIS said.
Bensman said the documents he received provide the total numbers of immigrants and where they have flown in from but do not identify any of the 43 cities they have touched down in. The department said identifying cities is a security problem.
The report shared with Secrets said some cities are seeing massive numbers of illegal immigrants fly in. One unidentified city, presumably Miami, has received the bulk of the flights, Bensman said.
“Haitians flew into U.S. airports in the greatest numbers from January through mid-September, a total of 76,582. These Haitians favored one redacted airport over all 36 into which they have flown. Some 47,768 flew into that airport,” the report said.
“The program was offered to Venezuelans a few months earlier, in October 2022. Since then, 63,360 flew into 43 airports, some 39,474 of them into one preferred airport. Some 46,794 Cubans flew into 41 airports, the majority of them, 33,355, favoring one in particular,” it added.
Bensman’s report said, “It’s likely that the preferred airport in all these cases was Miami, but we won’t know for sure unless CBP provides the unredacted information.”

Chairman Comer: “Mr. Homan, we’ve traveled to the border, the majority members of this committee, several times. We’ve heard many complaints from our Border Patrol agents, can you describe how the Biden Administration has hampered the ability of ICE officers and ICE prosecutors to enforce immigration laws?”
Mr. Homan: “Yes, I will. The biggest thing about the border, when you cause a crisis this big, when you make promises that you can enter the country illegally, you’ll be released quickly, because this Administration is not enforcing the law, the only thing they have done is send more resources to the border to process quicker and release quicker. Because they care about the optics. When you do that, more are going to come. So, when they overwhelm the border patrol, I can tell you right now, in the last several months there have been times that certain sectors on the southwest border, 100% of border patrol agents were pulled off patrol, to come in and process.”
Representative Glenn Grothman (R-Wis.) noted the unprecedented flow of illegal immigration and pointed out that the Biden Administration is releasing illegal aliens into the United States at an alarming rate.
Rep. Grothman: “I want to just clarify some numbers here. We need to understand the size of this issue. As I understand it, in December, over 300,000 people entered this country and were allowed in or were gotaways…and when the last administration left office, that number was depending on the month, 5 to 20,000. So, it’s increased by a factor of about 30 to 1. Is that accurate? 30 times more people coming into the interior of this country compared to two years ago?”
Mr. Homan: “Total encounters are five times as many under this Administration than Trump. And the gentlemen to my left talks about percentages of people removed under Trump versus under Biden, here’s the difference: percentages of 2.3 million is a lot different than the percentage of 646. It’s not about percentages, it’s about how many people are released in the country and there’s zero comparison between the Trump Administration and the Biden Administration.”
Representative Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) exposed how the Biden Administration intentionally stripped successful border enforcement policies and the President’s open border agenda is designed to incentivize illegal immigration.
Rep. Jordan: “So you said earlier, both you and Mr. Edlow, said this is by design. This is intentional and I think I got it right that you said three main things about this Administration: stop building the wall, get rid of ‘remain in Mexico’, and release people when they get here. And that incentivizes people to come from, I believe you said 181 different countries. Because they know there is no wall to get over, there’s no wait in Mexico and they’re going to get released to wherever they want to go, is that right?”
Mr. Homan: “Absolutely, the first few days in office, President Biden signed over 90 executive orders abolishing all the policies that were proven effective based on numbers.”
Representative Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.) highlighted how President Biden’s executive orders and regulatory actions enabled illegal aliens to enter the country.
Rep. Foxx: “Mr. Edlow, do you have anything that you would like to add to the comments Mr. Homan has made in conjunction with why we don’t need additional laws and what we can do to make sure the laws that exist are enforced?”
Mr. Edlow: “As Mr. Homan said, the previous Administration used everything that was available whether it be remain in Mexico program, whether it be the asylum cooperative agreements with Central American partners, whether it be other programs that allowed the U.S. to quickly intake, process in for expedited removal of individuals from certain countries and make sure they had all due process within just a matter of days and make sure they were in front of an immigration judge within a matter of days. What I find kind of amusing is the circumvention of lawful pathways and notice of proposed rulemaking by the Biden Administration noted that there were no alternatives available to what they were proposing, and they noted that, such as an asylum cooperative agreement and remain in Mexico were not viable options because there was no time to negotiate them. Why I find that amusing is because the Trump Administration did negotiate them, they were working and the Biden Administration pulled them back, ended them, destroyed them, and now they’re saying, ‘well we don’t have any alternative because we can’t do that.’ It’s just not the way.”
Representative Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) emphasized cartels are leveraging the chaos at the border by creating diversions at the expense of human life to traffic dangerous narcotics like fentanyl across the southern border.
Rep. Biggs: “Let’s talk about fentanyl. 90% that we interdict is at a port of entry. If you’ve never been down to the border and literally driven for 30 miles, you don’t even see a CBP agent, why? Because they’re processing people, and you know the number of people that are coming across that don’t want to be caught. You got to understand…that it’s between the port of entry where people are bringing the fentanyl in. Is that not true Mr. Homan?”
Mr. Homan: “I spent three decades investigating criminal cartels who smuggle narcotics into the United States. They will use the route of least resistance. Will they go through a port of entry where every vehicle is stopped, driver spoken to…between the ports of entry when 70 to 90% of agents are off the line, and in several instances, no one is on the line, that’s when the criminal cartel is going to move the fentanyl.”
Representative Michael Waltz (R-Fla.) pointed out the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has released many illegal aliens into the United States and reiterated that terrorist and cartel organizations are taking advantage of the Biden Administration’s open border agenda.
Rep. Waltz: “Just look at the numbers and do the math, we’ve got just in two months DHS released 257,000, a quarter million, enough to fill entire stadiums. I’m for legal immigration or orderly immigration, however this Administration is espousing polices that invite people to come however they can and 40% by gangs and cartels and by smugglers. They are forever scarred and abused by these policies.”
Representative Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) described how DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is failing his basic responsibilities by empowering drug cartels and terrorist organizations. DHS is charged by statute with preventing terrorist entry and securing the border.
Rep. Mace: “Can you explain how directives from Secretary Mayorkas have empowered drug cartels?”
Mr. Edlow: “Certainly, the directives starting with the halting of deportation the first day of the Biden Administration then moving on to the enforcement priorities under Secretary Mayorkas have made it so that drug cartels know that the majority of people that they help to come across for one reason or another…are not going to be the subject of deportation or enforcement actions and ultimately it’s going to help the cartels gain a greater foothold in the country.”
Rep. Mace: “Do you believe Secretary Mayorkas actions and directives violate federal law and his oath of office?”
Mr. Edlow: “I believe that the actions in terms of regulations have made the border significantly less secure, they are in violation of the law, and I do believe it is dereliction of duty to have signed off on regulations that have done that.”
Representative Michael Cloud (R-Texas) noted how the Biden Administration’s open border policies are negatively impacting children. The Biden Administration has lost track of over 100,000 migrant children and many are being exploited.
Rep. Cloud: “A lot has been made of family separation, and you have mentioned it but if you could mention again, how many children has the Biden Administration lost and can you speak to the lives lost on the journey as well and the human side?”
Mr. Homan: “Nearly 100,000 children are missing. This Administration released to so-called sponsors, we can’t find them, but we do know we’ve found many working the midnight shift at a meatpacking plants, many of them forced labor. Many are in indentured servitude. We know that we’ve lost right around 1,700 aliens have died making this trip, that’s not counting the Darien Gap which is thousands between Mexico and Central America. When you make promises that you can cross this border illegally, you’ll get released, you’ll get work authorization, you can’t be removed because ICE can’t remove somebody that’s in the country legally for being here illegally, the Secretary said that. When you make those promises…the most vulnerable people in the world are going to put themselves in harm’s way of the cartels.”
Proclamation on the Termination Of Emergency With Respect To The Southern Border Of The United States And Redirection Of Funds Diverted To Border Wall Construction
BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
A PROCLAMATION
Like every nation, the United States has a right and a duty to secure its borders and protect its people against threats. But building a massive wall that spans the entire southern border is not a serious policy solution. It is a waste of money that diverts attention from genuine threats to our homeland security. My Administration is committed to ensuring that the United States has a comprehensive and humane immigration system that operates consistently with our Nation’s values. In furtherance of that commitment, I have determined that the declaration of a national emergency at our southern border in Proclamation 9844 of February 15, 2019 (Declaring a National Emergency Concerning the Southern Border of the United States), was unwarranted. It shall be the policy of my Administration that no more American taxpayer dollars be diverted to construct a border wall. I am also directing a careful review of all resources appropriated or redirected to construct a southern border wall.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR., President of the United States of America, by the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, including section 202 of the National Emergencies Act (50 U.S.C. 1601 et seq.), hereby declare that the national emergency declared by Proclamation 9844, and continued on February 13, 2020 (85 Fed. Reg. 8715), and January 15, 2021, is terminated and that the authorities invoked in that proclamation will no longer be used to construct a wall at the southern border. I hereby further direct as follows:
Section 1. Pause in Construction and Obligation of Funds. (a) The Secretary of Defense and the Secretary of Homeland Security, in consultation with the Director of the Office of Management and Budget, shall direct the appropriate officials within their respective departments to:
(i) pause work on each construction project on the southern border wall, to the extent permitted by law, as soon as possible but in no case later than seven days from the date of this proclamation, to permit:
(A) assessment of the legality of the funding and contracting methods used to construct the wall;
(B) assessment of the administrative and contractual consequences of ceasing each wall construction project; and
(C) completion and implementation of the plan developed in accordance with section 2 of this proclamation;
(ii) pause immediately the obligation of funds related to construction of the southern border wall, to the extent permitted by law; and
(iii) compile detailed information on all southern border wall construction contracts, the completion status of each wall construction project, and the funds used for wall construction since February 15, 2019, including directly appropriated funds and funds drawn from the Treasury Forfeiture Fund (31 U.S.C. 9705(g)(4)(B)), the Department of Defense Drug Interdiction and Counter-Drug Activities account (10 U.S.C. 284), and the Department of Defense Military Construction account (pursuant to the emergency authorities in 10 U.S.C. 2808(a) and 33 U.S.C. 2293(a)).
(b) The pause directed in subsection (a)(i) of this section shall apply to wall projects funded by redirected funds as well as wall projects funded by direct appropriations. The Secretary of Defense and the Secretary of Homeland Security may make an exception to the pause, however, for urgent measures needed to avert immediate physical dangers or where an exception is required to ensure that funds appropriated by the Congress fulfill their intended purpose.
Sec. 2. Plan for Redirecting Funding and Repurposing Contracts. The Secretary of Defense and the Secretary of Homeland Security, in coordination with the Secretary of the Treasury, the Attorney General, the Director of the Office of Management and Budget, and the heads of any other appropriate executive departments and agencies, and in consultation with the Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs, shall develop a plan for the redirection of funds concerning the southern border wall, as appropriate and consistent with applicable law. The process of developing the plan shall include consideration of terminating or repurposing contracts with private contractors engaged in wall construction, while providing for the expenditure of any funds that the Congress expressly appropriated for wall construction, consistent with their appropriated purpose. The plan shall be developed within 60 days from the date of this proclamation. After the plan is developed, the Secretary of Defense and the Secretary of Homeland Security shall take all appropriate steps to resume, modify, or terminate projects and to otherwise implement the plan.
Sec. 3. Definition. Consistent with Executive Order 13767 of January 25, 2017 (Border Security and Immigration Enforcement Improvements), for the purposes of this proclamation, “wall” means a contiguous, physical wall or other similarly secure, contiguous, and impassable physical barrier.
Sec. 4. General Provisions. (a) Nothing in this proclamation shall be construed to impair or otherwise affect:
(i) the authority granted by law to an executive department or agency, or the head thereof; or
(ii) the functions of the Director of the Office of Management and Budget relating to budgetary, administrative, or legislative proposals.
(b) This proclamation shall be implemented consistent with applicable law and subject to the availability of appropriations.
(c) This proclamation is not intended to, and does not, create any right or benefit, substantive or procedural, enforceable at law or in equity by any party against the United States, its departments, agencies, or entities, its officers, employees, or agents, or any other person.

You do realize to hire more immigration judges, to hire more border patrol agents, to fund building more of the wall, more detention centers and so on actually have to be funded with MONEY that only congress can approve funding for. But obviously they didn't want these things.....

Obviously he doesn't want the border closed. If he did he wouldn't be picking up illegals at airports and flying them around the country with his international Uber app, would he??

Chip Roy knocks Trump over border claim: ‘That didn’t happen’
Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) took a dig at former President Trump in a House floor speech Tuesday, denying the former president’s claim that any executive could unilaterally close the southern border.
Trump’s comments in a social media post Tuesday came after House Republicans shut down a bipartisan Senate border security bill, claiming President Biden should instead unilaterally stop all migrants from entering the U.S. using executive orders.
“No, we’re not just going to pass the buck and say that, ‘Oh, any president can walk in and secure the border,’” Roy said, referring to Trump’s post. “All a president has to do is declare the border’s closed, and it’s closed. Well, with all due respect, that didn’t happen in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020. There were millions of people that came in the United States during those four years.”
But Roy did compliment the Trump administration for work to secure the border, even without the total shut down Trump advocated for Tuesday.
“But what did happen was that that administration, led by the president, led by people who believe in America, led by strong leaders at [the Department of Homeland Security], they worked to secure the border, they worked to get those numbers down,” he said. “They worked to force Mexico to hold people in place with the migrant protection protocols.”
A House vote to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas unexpectedly failed Tuesday, after Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.) joined two other Republicans in voting against it, and Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) surprisingly attended to vote despite a recent surgery.
Republicans claimed Mayorkas’s poor job performance was impeachable, which Democrats and the GOP dissenters challenged.
In his floor speech hours after that vote, Roy urged Republicans to refocus on border security policy.
“We cannot lose sight of the unity we have as Republicans that there is a way to secure the border,” he said. “We know what it is. We’re gonna stand up for it and we’re gonna fight for it.”
“We’re gonna keep fighting for it now, fight for it in this Congress,” he continued. “We’re gonna fight for it through the elections. We’re gonna fight for it next year when, Lord willing, there’s a Republican president.”
Continuing to repeat trumpiqan rhetoric doesn't change the fact that the president doesn't have the authority to close the border no matter how many times you repeat it.

You must have missed the part that in order to do these things they have to be funded and only congress can approve that funding. But the party of no said no. Everything else is just the same tired, repeated rhetoric.
Sleepy Joe has let close to 10 MILLION illegals into the country. They've overrun every major city in America, draining resources from people that need them and making Americans feel like the outsiders. Has done nothing to dissuade or prevent their arrival, in fact, he's done the exact opposite. He tells us to call them "newcomers" and welcome them with open arms.
Now we find out he flies 320,000 all over the country with his "It's an app, man!", to the city of their choice. We only found out because someone sued for our information.

To me whether it's fake news or not is yet to be determined. It certainly wouldn't be the first time that a sham has been perpetrated in such a regard. So I'm neither claiming it's fake or real at this point in time.

Rafael Govea Romero, the suspect in Texas 16-year-old Lizbeth Medina's December 2023 murder, is set to be arraigned Thursday in Jackson County.
Romero, a 24-year-old illegal immigrant from Mexico, is accused of stalking the high school cheerleader and aspiring nurse before allegedly striking her over the head and stabbing her in the Edna apartment that she shared with her mother.
A spokesperson for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) told Fox News Digital that ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Houston "lodged an immigration detainer with the Jackson County (Texas) Sheriff’s Office on Rafael Govea-Romero, 24, Mexico, following his arrest for capital murder."
ICE ERO lodges immigration detainers against noncitizens who have been arrested for criminal activity and taken into custody as part of the agency's mission to identify and arrest removable illegal immigrants, according to ICE.
Romero had a criminal background in Texas and was on probation at the time of his arrest in connection to Lizbeth's murder, Edna Police Chief Rick Boone told Fox News Digital.
The murder suspect was reportedly on probation for a burglary in Schulenburg, Texas, about 60 miles from Edna, in 2022, as the Fayette County Record first reported. Edna police believe Romero may also be tied to a burglary that occurred at Lizbeth's home about a month before her killing.
A Jackson County grand jury in February indicted Romero on a capital murder charge in connection with Lizbeth's murder.
Edna police initially arrested Romero in Schulenburg, five days after Lizbeth was found dead in the bathtub of her apartment with "smeared blood on the sides of her and what appeared to be a stab wound to the upper stomach area," according to a police affidavit previously obtained by Fox News Digital. Police were able to locate the suspect thanks to cellphone data and other evidence tying him to the crime scene.
The victim's mother, Jacqueline Medina, had left their apartment early on Dec. 5 for work. Her daughter typically left for school afterward, but that day she neither made it to school nor the Christmas parade that her cheer team was supposed to be practicing for.
Jacqueline went to the parade, expecting to see her daughter, but when she couldn't find Lizbeth anywhere, she began reaching out to friends and family for help tracking down the 16-year-old. Later that evening, Jacqueline found her daughter dead in their bathtub.
The grieving mother, who lived in Nebraska before moving to Texas for work, said neither she nor her daughter knew Romero but noted that their house had been burglarized on Nov. 13, about a month before the teenager's murder. Edna police officers believe Romero may have been involved in the burglary and may have stalked Lizbeth before allegedly attacking and killing her.
"I believe the burglary from 11/13/2023 could have a connection with the murder suspect," an Edna officer wrote in the affidavit. "I believed the suspect of this murder was at large and a present danger to the community. I was especially concerned that the person believed to be the murder suspect was texting other high school students, leading me to believe the suspect was targeting students."
"Furthermore, I believe the public was in danger due to the stalking-like behavior displayed by the suspect via the potential connection of the 11/13/2023 burglary and driving through the apartment complex on 12/4/2023."
Romero's arraignment is scheduled for Thursday. Fox News Digital reached out to his defense attorney for comment.

At this time, North Dakota does not have any cases of measles; however, officials say in order to stay that way, vaccination is important.
The MMR vaccine, or the measles, mumps, and rubella shot is given in two doses.
Danni Pinick, the immunization surveillance coordinator for the North Dakota Department of Health and Human Services, says one key group is left out of the vaccinations, but for a good reason — kids under a year can’t get it.
“But there is really no protection for people who are zero to six month olds and that’s why it is really frightening to see these measles outbreaks spread throughout the United States because the really vulnerable people are really young infants,” said Pinick.
Pinnick adds that people with severe symptoms might have brain swelling or pneumonia and could end up in the hospital.
The most common symptom is a rash that starts on your head and goes all over your body.
If you experience these symptoms, officials say you should call your health care provider before you come in, so you don’t infect anyone else.

Laredo Mayor expresses concerns over SB 4
LAREDO, TX. (KGNS) - Many in the State of Texas are speaking out about the controversial new state law that would make illegal border crossings a state crime, including the mayor of Laredo.
Last month, Texas lawmakers approved Senate Bill 4, an immigration law that would allow Texas law enforcement officers to arrest people for illegally crossing the border from Mexico.
Laredo Mayor Dr. Victor Trevino said that while he understands the need for border security measures, he believes it could lead to other challenges for law enforcement officers.
“We have federal laws and we have Texas laws, and we need guidance as to which law we are going to follow and who is going to train our officers, city officers, police officers to deal with it,” said Mayor Dr. Trevino. “They are not trained in immigration laws and the other thing is that there’s that possibility of profiling people, if you fit the description, you may be stopped even if you’re a citizen.”
Mayor Trevino goes on to say that local law enforcement continues to collaborate effectively with Border Patrol agents to deter illegal activity in our city.
Dr. Trevino said they are in communication with officials in Washington and the Department of Homeland Security about what’s happening in Laredo.

Texas border enforcement law again blocked in legal whiplash
March 20 (Reuters) - A Republican-backed Texas law that would empower law enforcement authorities in the state to arrest people suspected of illegally crossing the U.S.-Mexico border was blocked again late on Tuesday by a federal appeals court, just hours after the U.S. Supreme Court had cleared the way for it to go into effect.
The New Orleans-based 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals halted enforcement of the law, reviving a federal judge's order blocking it in response to a challenge by Democratic President Joe Biden's administration. The 5th Circuit set arguments for Wednesday on whether to keep the block in place while Texas appeals it.
The legal back and forth in the case has caused uncertainty about the future of the measure signed in December by Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott. The Biden administration sued in January to stop the law, known as SB 4, which was originally set to take effect on March 5. The administration argued it violates the U.S. Constitution and federal law by interfering with the U.S. government's power to regulate immigration as well as running afoul of a 2012 Supreme Court precedent.
The statute authorizes Texas law enforcement to arrest people suspected of entering the United States illegally, giving local officers powers long delegated to the federal government. Abbott said the law was needed due to Biden's failure to enforce federal laws criminalizing illegal entry or re-entry.
The Supreme Court, which has a 6-3 conservative majority, on Tuesday had decided to let the law take effect, with the three liberal justices in dissent.
The law is one of several measures put in place by Abbott aimed at deterring migration in the state including deploying National Guard troops and state law enforcement under its Operation Lone Star and placing concertina wire and floating buoy barriers along the Rio Grande river.
On Tuesday night at the border between Ciudad Juarez, Mexico and El Paso, Texas, several groups of migrants who had already crossed the river into the United States but were blocked by concertina wire along the banks built fires for warmth in makeshift encampments made of sheets and sticks, waiting for a chance to navigate through the barrier.
'CHAOS AND CONFUSION'
Republicans have criticized Biden's handling of the record numbers of migrants caught illegally crossing the border. Abbott and other Republicans favor the restrictive policies of former President Donald Trump, their party's candidate challenging Biden in the Nov. 5 U.S. election.
Opinion polls reveal acute voter concern over the situation along the border. Reuters/Ipsos polling showed Biden's public approval level at 37% as of Feb. 28.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said on Tuesday the Texas law would "sow chaos and confusion at our southern border."
The Texas law made illegal entry or re-entry into Texas a state crime, with penalties ranging from 180 days in jail to 20 years in prison. It would require Texas magistrate judges to order migrants to return to Mexico, with up to 20-year sentences for those who refuse to comply.
Mexico said on Tuesday it would not accept those repatriated by Texas.
Texas-based U.S. District Judge David Ezra on Feb. 29 sided with the Biden administration and agreed to preliminarily block Texas officials from enforcing the law, saying it "threatens the fundamental notion that the United States must regulate immigration with one voice."
But the 5th Circuit paused Ezra's ruling in an order that would have let the law take effect on March 10, prompting the administration to file an emergency request to the Supreme Court. Justice Samuel Alito, acting for the Supreme Court, on March 4 had halted the 5th Circuit ruling - and thus the law - from taking effect, giving the justices more time to consider the matter.
A 5th Circuit panel, in a 2-1 vote, on Tuesday night lifted the administrative stay ahead of arguments on whether to once again put on hold the judge's injunction while Texas pursues an appeal.
The majority in the appeals court's order included Judge Priscilla Richman, an appointee of Republican former President George W. Bush, and Judge Irma Carrillo Ramirez, a Biden appointee. Judge Andrew Oldham, an appointee of Republican former President Donald Trump, dissented.

That's a figment of your imagination. I won't speak for other posters but as for myself I was fully aware of what the SCOTUS ruling actually meant. They even stated it themselves. they said take it back to the circuit court. They weren't going to block the law because it hadn't yet gone through the process of the other courts. Usually the SCOTUS allows these things to go through the entire process before they rule one way or the other. It wasn't even a ruling on the law itself. The ruling was whether they would block the law from being enacted while it was going through this process.
You might wish to look at which side jumped on here like they were celebrating their birthdays because they thought this was an actual ruling on the law.

No it would elicit the response from Mexico that we want. Just like when Trump wanted Mexico’s support on “remain in Mexico “, when he wanted Mexico to provide military support to their southern border to reduce the flow of migrants thru Mexico, when he wanted support from Mexico at our southern border he just whispered the word “tariff” to the Mexican president and they made it happen. That's the response you give when avoiding anything of substance. I plainly stated that if you want to stop people AT the border, you empower people AT the border. There are thousands of National Guard troops AT the border. They do not have the power to arrest or detain people. That's just stupid. If Abbott really wanted to stop people from crossing the border his new law would have empowered National Guard troops to detain and arrest people crossing the border.
You make it sound as though anyone who disagrees with the way this law is written doesn't want to stop illegal immigrants from coming into our country. That's simply not true. But that's not what this law does. These immigrants for the most part don't "stay in Texas". They go to cities and states all across this country. Hell, even Abbott just sends them to other places on buses. The only way law enforcement can determine whether someone is here legally or not is to stop them and ask them for paperwork. And if they were born here the only paperwork they would have is a drivers license. I wonder how many people's rights you're willing to sacrifice in order to get what you want even when it will have little actual impact on the problem? I guess it's a lot easier when they don't look like you do.

Obviously you haven't been paying attention. I've been saying there's a border crisis for a while now. At one time the numbers dipped but they quickly rose again. The difference is some on your side say it can be fixed for free and refuse to fund more border agents and immigration judges. At your stage in life I thought you would have figured out that nothing comes for free.

Congress has spent decades attempting and failing to pass bipartisan legislation on immigration and border security. WSJ senior political correspondent Molly Ball explains how the latest border bill fell apart even before it reached the Senate floor, and what it means in an election year. Photo Illustration: Annie Zhao EAGLE PASS, Texas—Legal turmoil over a Texas plan to arrest and deport migrants left state and border residents mired in confusion this week over whether the law would be allowed to take effect, a development that could upend more than a century of national immigration policy.
A volley of legal orders regarding the law, known as SB 4, came as the Supreme Court and Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals both chimed in on whether the law should remain stalled as courts weigh whether it is constitutional for states to set their own immigration policies.
An Austin-based federal judge blocked SB 4 last month, calling it an unconstitutional violation of federal powers. A decision on whether to keep it paused is pending from a three-judge appeals court panel who signaled differing opinions during a hearing Wednesday.
The hearing followed days of back-and-forth on the subject. A U.S. Supreme Court order blocking the law from taking effect was allowed to expire earlier this week before it was blocked again, minutes later. Another Supreme Court order allowed the law to take effect Tuesday, before the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals halted it late Tuesday night.
Neither the appeals court nor the Supreme Court has yet ruled on the constitutionality of the law.
The Texas law makes it a crime to cross into the state illegally between ports of entry and allows state officials to order deportations of violators. The measure was passed by the Texas Legislature and signed last year by Republican Gov. Greg Abbott. The state’s Republican leaders and the Biden administration have been engaged in a protracted standoff over border policy.
The judges gave no indication of when they might take action on whether to continue the pause on the law’s enforcement.
Abbott signaled he would keep fighting to implement the law and called the brief allowance to do so Tuesday “clearly a positive development.” The Justice Department warned that allowing the law to begin would “throw immigration enforcement into chaos,” and undermine Washington’s enforcement powers.
In Eagle Pass, a small border city that has been the recent epicenter of Texas efforts against illegal immigration, the prospect of the new law has stirred an air of uncertainty and anxiety, police spokesman Humberto Garza said.
No arrests made under the law were immediately reported during the roughly eight-hour period the law was unexpectedly allowed to take effect Tuesday. Garza said the city’s department of about 65 officers would be required to enforce the law if it commences, but has no state instruction in how to do so. “We have no officers trained in immigration law,” he said.
Spokespeople for the Texas Department of Public Safety, which has been the primary agency handling the enforcement of the state’s border efforts, didn’t return messages seeking comment.
Even as SB 4 is tossed back and forth between the courts, the Eagle Pass police have fielded an increasing number of calls from residents reporting people they suspect are in the country without authorization, Garza said. The department will ask for guidance from state and federal authorities once the legal issues are settled, he said. “They’re playing volleyball with it over there,” he said. “We’re standing over here waiting for what it is we’re going to do.”
During the appeals court hearing Wednesday, Chief Judge Priscilla Richman, an appointee of former President George W. Bush, appeared skeptical of the law. She noted that no state previously had claimed the power to deport migrants and questioned how the state would carry out deportations and whether it would honor federal protections granted to people seeking asylum.

Oldham, a former general counsel to Abbott who was appointed to the court by former President Donald Trump, seemed to question whether all provisions of the law could immediately be seen as invalid.
“We have no clue how this would be enforced,” he said.
The third judge, Irma Carrillo Ramirez, a border native and President Biden appointee who remained quiet during the hearing, could cast a decisive vote if the other two disagree.
For three years, Texas has been surging thousands of state police and National Guard soldiers to the border, arresting migrants found on state or private property on state misdemeanor trespassing charges, busing migrants to northern cities and erecting barriers along the Rio Grande. The state has spent or allocated more than $11 billion to the effort, with limited measures of impact.
Governors from some 13 states have voiced support for Abbott’s efforts and sent their own National Guard, state police or both to assist with it since 2021.
Some states are now following Texas’ legislative approach in testing state authority. Iowa lawmakers this week passed a bill that would make it a crime to re-enter the state after being deported. People who previously left the U.S. while facing a removal order—and those who have been denied entry to the country—also could face charges under the Iowa legislation, which is expected to be signed into law by Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds. Law enforcement wouldn’t be allowed to arrest people who are at schools and religious institutions or those visiting healthcare facilities for treatment.
Arguments in the Texas case have touched upon a precedent set in 2012, when the U.S. Supreme Court struck down most of a sweeping Arizona immigration law, dubbed for its “show me your papers” provision. Abbott said in December that he would welcome overturning the Arizona precedent. Attorneys and judges evaluating SB 4 have noted that to do so could allow all border states to make their own decisions as to whom to allow into the country.
Attorneys for the state of Texas have argued that SB 4 works in concert with federal law, rather than conflicting with it. They said the state is trying to assist with a border crisis Republican leaders claim federal authorities have failed to adequately address.
“I would point the court to the State of the Union—I’ve never done that before,” said Texas Solicitor General Aaron Nielson. “Everyone is concerned about the border.”
Nielson, however, was unable to answer many questions about the specifics of what the law’s enforcement would look like. The biggest question remains how Texas would conduct deportations. Under the law, migrants would be taken to ports of entry to return to Mexico, regardless of their country of origin. Mexico has said it won’t accept deportees from the state of Texas.
“We are against this draconian law,” President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said Wednesday during his daily press conference, adding that foreign policy isn’t up to state governments. “We would not accept deportations, once and for all, from the Texas state government.”
If migrants returned to the port can’t leave, Nielson said they would be rearrested by state authorities. The law allows people to be imprisoned for up to 20 years in such cases.
“This is the first time, it seems to me, the state has said they have the power to remove illegal aliens?” Richman asked.
“It depends on what we mean by removal,” Nielson responded.
Nielson couldn’t say whether people who entered the country in other states, and then traveled to Texas, could be arrested under the law. Democrats and civil-rights organizations have raised concerns about racial profiling if authorities try to enforce the law far from the border, by questioning suspected violators of how they entered the country.
Daniel Tenny, an attorney for the Justice Department, said the entirety of the Texas law is clearly pre-empted by federal immigration powers. Even if the court thought only the removal provisions were pre-empted, however, he said it would be extraordinary to let them go into effect in the short term.
“I am really concerned first in people’s ability to understand what the law permits or doesn’t permit,” said Ruben Garcia, executive director of Annunciation House in El Paso, a nonprofit that works with migrants. “The other thing that is very, very disconcerting is the potential arbitrariness with which the state of Texas may choose to apply the law…You’re now going to involve a whole new cast of officialdom in the immigration equation—individuals who have no training at all.”
Amid the uncertainty, police departments in the state’s biggest cities sought to reassure residents that they wouldn’t enforce SB 4 until it is clarified by courts and wouldn’t use it as pretext for racial profiling. “Although we will always follow the law, the primary responsibility for immigration enforcement and border protection should be left to our federal and state partners,” a Fort Worth Police Department statement said.
