If It was so easy for some of you to see how good [INSERT LATE ROUND QB HERE] was coming out of college, how come he didn't go in the first round? I mean you seem to make the case that he showed all his talents that MIGHT make him a franchise QB in college. So how did everyone miss on him? Wilson Prescott Dalton Carr Cousins Brees

If It was so easy for some of you to see how good Jimmy G was coming out of college, how come he didn't go in the first round? I mean you seem to make the case that he showed all his talents that MIGHT make him a franchise QB in college. So how did everyone miss on him? Let me take a crack at this. He came out in 2014, the same year as Teddy Bridgewater, Derek Carr, Johnny Manziel, Blake Bortles, Aaron Murray, AJ McCarron, and Zach Mettenberger. During the college season leading into that draft, the hype machine as all over Bridgewater, Carr, and Manziel, with Bortles making a late charge up the charts with a good season and prototypical size. Murray and Mettenberger had been favorites coming into the college season, but Mettenberger blew out his knee, and Murray had a disappointing season. McCarron got some attention for leading the Crimson Tide to such a great record. Garoppolo wasn't even in the conversation. He had a great career at Eastern Illinois in the Ohio Valley Conference which isn't exactly known as a breeding ground for NFL players. Most of the people who were even aware of him, pretty much dismissed him for the level of competition. Notably, he broke several records held by the previous great QB from Eastern Illinois, Tony Romo. He was invited to the E-W Shrine Game, where he turned heads, and he turned even more at the Senior Bowl. But it wasn't enough to make much of a splash in the face of the boiling argument between the supporters of the big 4; Bortles, Bridgewater, Carr, and Manziel. He entered the conversation too late. And coming from the OVC wasn't helping his cause. Garoppolo just got bunched into the '2nd tier' guys despite his record, film, and showing at the Shrine game and Senior Bowl. Instead of concentrating on why he wasn't taken in the first round, why not look at the fact that, after the 4 QBs that everyone was talking about were off the board, Garoppolo was the first non-hyped QB drafted. He was drafted by Belichick, a famously good talent evaluator, higher than NE had drafted a QB since Bledsoe was drafted 1st overall in 1990. And he drafted him when Brady, his superstar, was 36. These facts suggest that he wasn't looking for another backup, but someone he expected to become Brady's successor by now. He wanted the most talented guy flying under the hype machine...in classic Belichick fashion.

Good post. Great read. I hate to interrupt flogging this dead horse, but for me, enough already. I liked JG the year he was drafted and wished he had been picked then.
I see no point that matters in why he was passed over or when he was taken. Picked by BB matters to me, like a Pigskin Seal of Approval. But the things that matter are today, here and now, in the current draft/sign/trade window. This past stuff that has little bearing on that window is important to others more than it is to me. But have at. Just wish the thread posts included more relevance for what it is worth.

Very well written 84. JG was not drafted in the first because Haslem stopped the Browns from doing so because he loved the Hype around Manziel. To be fair to Haslem he was a rookie owner who was bound to make some mistakes. Hopefully he has learned from them. I had JG as my top rated QB that draft followed by Teddy and then Carr. I wasn't sold on Carr though because in college he collapsed a bit too much when under pressure. I had stated that if anyone drafted Carr they would have to build a top tier O-line. BTW guess what the Carr's team did first? They went and built him a top notch O-line so I guess they agreed with me =) One thing I never hear talked about enough when it comes to JG. His godly pump fake. He has a pump fake out of this world and the very best in the NFL. Bar none it's the best and will literally make defenders trip over themselves. He will look one way, pump fake it, then throw it where he wasn't even looking a second ago. The speed of his game is so fast and he delivers the ball so fast that by mid game the defense has no choice but to bite on it. If they ignore it and it's not a fake they will get burned. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixrLtgGKS-8Look at the play at 105. His first fakes stops the blitz, his second fake draws the coverage and then he makes a beautiful pass for big yards. Anyways you get the idea ^^ I'd have him lead a hurry up offense all game long and just enjoy laughing at the defense falling all over the place lol.

That's the same video I watched months ago and the same things stood out : quick release, good recognition and more than enough arm strength. Granted he played in a safe system, one he was familiar with, but still, he looks the part.

That question has been answered dozens and dozens and dozens of times. Jimmy G will be a FA next year and he will want to be a starting qb. BB and NE can get more for him now than they could if he left in FA.

I like Jimmy, don't get me wrong, just very wary of a guy who has such a limited resume to go off of. I can't make the judgement that he's a franchise QB off of just two games in the NFL. And for those of you with the argument that "well you'd rather spend a high draft pick on a rookie with no experience", no, not me, don't want to do that either. I'd rather take a guy like Webb or Peterman in the second or third and go see what happens. Invest our draft capital in improving the rest of the roster.

Your opinion has just as much merit as does any other. I want to land JG as I liked him coming out...but if we can't or the price is prohibitive I'd prefer your QB choices over any of the "top" guys before our second 2nd pick.

Well written 84.. Now, the question is, who is the JG in this years draft?
Is there a Jimmy G in the bunch. Is there a Tom Brady?

That year, while I did like Garappolo, the guy I wanted was Carr, thought he had the most arm talent that year. Didn't want anything to do with Manziel and hated it when we drafted him. Was not very high on Bridgewater either. But I did like Bortles, thought he stood in the pocket in the face of the blitz. Showed toughness.

That makes absolutly no sense, we have NE interested in JG and JG not interested in being Brady's successor and rather being the Browns starting QB just because of 1/2 years? BB never cared that much about picks, he isn't the Browns FO.... If we go into crazy conspiracy theories then NE trades JG to the Browns and then next year or the year after he signs with NE again...

Trub is a poor man's version of JG in that they are both technicians but JG had a TON more playtime coming out. A 1 year starter is a big red flag to me because its a huge lack of experience.
Chad Kelly could be a very good pick up if he wasn't injured.
Peterman is interesting but I haven't seen much video of him but he seems more like a ken dorsey type.
Mahomes has the most potential but just like Brett Favre I think it will take him several years to be NFL ready. Still I think he could surprise some folks.
Joshua Dobbs is a guy I like and am rooting for. I think if he is given time to fix his footwork he could end up a starting QB if he works hard.
Watson would really have to polish himself to get around the poor ball placement he routinely displays. I am not confident he has the arm to play at the next level. If the offense is built for him and he goes to a team with BIG TE and BIG WR who will fight for ball possession then he might do well.

just an FYI BB has always cared about picks...he has been garnishing them for years...actually every since trading Bledsoe for 2 First round picks he's been parlaying them into future picks.

I don't know what you mean by that. My opinion of him hasn't changed, I think he has potential just not ready to anoint him a franchise an just yet, I need to see more then what I've seen so far.

And what would make BB trade Brady sucessor?
That's the point the defenders of a JG trade fail to address, the point being that if JG is that good BB will not trade him, and if he trades him its the sign that JG isn't that good.
"The defenders of JG" have addressed that point multiple times over the 8 versions of this thread. But the question "why would BB trade Brady sucessor?" is a valid one. To start, the factor most influencing the situation is how long can Brady continue to play at such a high level? Examples of QB playing into their 40s are few, and examples of QB being productive in their 40s are fewer. Examples of QB being productive beyond 42 are virtually non-existent. So while Brady may have just played the best season in his career at age 39, and believes he can play another 5-7 years, history is not on his side. That isn't to say he can't, there's always a first time, but it would be the first time. Even if he is productive for another 3 years, that puts NE in an awkward position financially if they want to keep both Brady and Garoppolo. They can wait a year til JGs rookie contract is up and see how Brady is playing this time next year. But that leaves them without much leverage. They can resign JG to a lucrative contract, franchise him, or watch him walk away getting a comp pick in return. By trading him this year they can get a much better return, but they risk losing their main insurance policy against Brady declining or getting injured. They still have Brissett, but I don't think they are as confident in him as in JG. So, how willing are they to gamble on Brady's continued production? The one thing to bear in mind is that this discussion (and the 7 before it) is predicated on a rumor that NE is willing to trade him. There is absolutely no hard evidence that says that rumor is true. That said, I'm positive that the FO of NE and CLE have had discussions and have defined to each other their relative positions on such a trade. Maybe there is a framework for a deal in place, maybe they're too far apart, and maybe there was never more than a curious inquiry. We won't know until it either happens or it doesn't.

The Browns reportedly don't 'have any hope' about a Jimmy Garoppolo trade http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/the-br...aroppolo-trade/But maybe the disinterest is real. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Patriots remain committed to not dealing Garoppolo this offseason. "From my understanding, the Patriots do not want to deal Jimmy Garoppolo," Rapoport reported recently. "They really just don't, whether it's to the Browns, whether it's to the Texans. Their stance right now ... is they do not want to give up someone who they consider a franchise quarterback for a pick this year." "The Browns may make a late run at Garoppolo," Rapoport explained, "but they do not seem to believe there's any hope there."

The only thing i don't agree with is how much less there going to get next year ... we have no clue what there being offered at this point ... NO CLUE .... so theres no way u can say there going to get a lot less if they wait ... No doubt there going to get less .. question is HOW MUCH LESS .. Oh .. the other thing U left off ... IF they keep him this year .... and decide for whatever reason he has to leave next year ... they'll franchise him ... let him work out a deal with another team and then the pats work out a trade then he signs his franchise offer to set the wheels on motion .... They won't get what they could get this year but they will get a lot more than the 3rd round comp pick there GAURANTEED .... unless of course they keep him ... Brady goes down and JG steps in and leads them to 10 wins in the regular season and then a SB victory ... then they'll get ALOT LOT LOT MORE if they franchise him ...

I wonder how many of you actually doubt Brady? I get the "history" thing, but are people really doubting Brady when he believes he can play at a high level into his 40s?

I don't know. I guess I give him about a 35-40% chance, better than I would give anyone else, but still less than 50/50.

That's fine. It's all opinion. I do disagree though. I think that anyone who has been watching has noticed that Brady has actually improved over the last few years. They also will have read about his revolutionary diet and exercise program. They also might remember that no one carries a bigger chip on his shoulder than Brady.
I think the Pats drafted Jimmy G to be the heir apparent to Brady due to the reasons you mentioned. I think that if they do trade Jimmy G [I have no idea if they will or not] that the reason will be that they believe that Brady can play effectively for at least a few more years and that they can get more in return for Jimmy G this year than they could next year.

The Browns reportedly don't 'have any hope' about a Jimmy Garoppolo trade. And here's the undeniable proof, from the article... "The Browns may make a late run at Garoppolo," Rapoport explained, "but they do not seem to believe there's any hope there."There's no Browns quote nor even an unnamed source. The Browns have never even publicly expressed an interest in trading for Garoppolo. So who, in the Browns organization, is Rapoport talking to who would disclose that?

I don't doubt Brady. I do doubt he will be playing until he is 47. I think he can still play and will be around for a while longer. I just don't think that "while" will be another 7-8 years.

I wonder how many of you actually doubt Brady? I get the "history" thing, but are people really doubting Brady when he believes he can play at a high level into his 40s? Yes, I doubt him. father time waits for no man., Ask Brett Favre. He thought he could do it also. And he was a freakin iron man. Look at Payton Manning. I'd say he got everything out of his body that was there to get. But at some point, and you never know when that will be, the end is right in front of you. So, Maybe he does make it another 5 years.. Maybe not. Myself, I doubt he can do it. I understand that doesn't fit the narrative you want to push.

I am not saying it will be another 7-8 years. I only bring it up because Jimmy G will be a FA next year. He's not going to want to remain a backup in NE when he could have multiple offers to be a starting qb. And again, I am not saying NE will trade him. However, I am saying that it would make sense to trade him this year if they want a maximum return on their investment.

JG might want to be a starter, but would he want to be a starter in Cleveland?
I also think the maximum return on investment would come from a trade now isn't necessarily true. I'm not saying you are wrong, but you may be making unconscious [censored] N(ot)F(or)L(ong) ideation could happen to Brady. Things happen. If you have what you think is a franchise QB, it is really hard to put a price on it. Without one, you are... the Browns. Why risk being without one?
BB might decide that a bird in hand is worth 2 in the bush.
Look at what happened with Bledsoe. I think the Patriots have shown they aren't afraid to let go of good players if they have a replacement in the pipeline.

I agree with GrimmBrown that maximum ROI might not be this year. 1st) He gets to hold onto JG another season, evaluating Brady at the end of next year to make up his mind. 2nd) How many teams could be in the market for a QB next year? It's one of the things pushing me towards wanting a QB early, even trading up so we can choose whomever we want (if the deal makes sense). Eli, Big Ben, and Rivers could all retire at any point. So can Palmer and Drew Brees. That's five teams that have been stable at QB, whom could all be in the market next year. Add them to the current list (Houston, Cleveland, NY Jets, San Fran, Chicago), and you could have yourself a serious Supply vs Demand Debacle here. I realized this a couple months ago, the NFL is going to be in serious demand for QBs really soon. I'm sure the Pats recognize this, and I think they figure they could probably franchise JG and get a pretty darn good return on him next year. And that's after insuring Brady for this season, and getting the chance to evaluate him (Brady's longevity) after another year.

j/c...Here is my thought on this pure and simple. In one of the strongest drafts in some time especially on top 60 impact players. I simply cannot believe that BB is going to sit there as amazing Prospects after another keep going to others teams until he finally gets to pick at #72???
Sorry I just don't see that happening! Now he just might give up his 2018 first round pick to get into the end of the First round??? But JG would be a better option.
Why would he trade Brady's replacement? Cause he will not be around to replace Brady in 2020something. jmho jmho

Would someone mind sharing the JG videos again? Page 8 doesn't have them. Thanks in advance.

jc...
The Patriots do not have a replacement QB of Brady's caliber in the pipeline so any idea that the Brady would be going anywhere, is fantasy, imo.
The only place Brady is going is retirement as a Patriot, when he is ready to hang it up.

I don't see Brady playing for more than a few more seasons if that.
EVERY player thinks/wants to play much longer than they are actually able to. It's hard to wrap your mind around the fact that your skills won't last forever.
And when a QB's skills start to go, they go quickly and it isn't pretty. Peyton Manning comes to mind. I believe that the line of thinking that only Brady has an extreme diet and work outs is a bit naĂŻve. It's just that Brady gets a lot more press than about any other player.
No, I don't believe that Brady will suddenly be the only QB to defy aging.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Eli, Big Ben, and Rivers could all retire at any point. So can Palmer and Drew Brees. That's five teams that have been stable at QB, whom could all be in the market next year. And based on an article I read on NFL.com, the league might loose Luck as well. He had shoulder surgery in the off season and his career is in Flux http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000...n-landing-spotsSo, Big Ben, Eli, Rivers, Brees and Palmer as well as maybe Luck and you have one helluva market for QB's over probably the next 2 years. Now let's ask this. Your Jimmy G. and your sitting in the cat bird seat. Your on a team that just won a Superbowl that has an ageing QB (one good hit could be it). Your in the last year of your contract. What if someone gives up a high pick for him, would that be smart if he doesn't agree to a long term deal? Probably not. Especially if you know, like everyone else seems to suspect, that the league could lose as many as 6 top shelf QB's in the next couple of years. Just so you all understand, I'm not making a judgement on if JG is the guy to get or not. I have no real idea. I just think it would be stupid to trade for him if he doesn't agree to a long term deal and why would he do that with all the potential openings coming up. Including his own current team.
