Here's the transcript so you don't have to listen to it:
On who will start at S at the beginning of training camp: Jackson: “I think (DB) Derrick Kindred will definitely be out there. It could be a toss-up between (DB Jabrill) Peppers… It could be a lot of different people, let me put it to you like that. I say that for this reason: I think when you look at those guys and Gregg (Williams) has so many different packages that he plays in, it is not about a starter. It is not about who walks out there first. It kind of depends on who I put out there on offense first because they are going to match what we do. I think it is unfair to say, ‘Well, this guy is going to be a starter’ and then all of a sudden we are in a different package and you guys start writing and saying, ‘Well, that guy wasn’t out there first.’ I don’t think that’s the right thing to do.” Brown: “Hue (Jackson) and his staff really have done a nice job making sure that we understand our players well and deploy them to their strengths. All five or six of the guys we have in that safety room bring different strengths to the table, and we are going to put them in situations where they can be successful and impact the game most effectively. As Hue said, you may see (DB Ed) Reynolds II out there or you may see Derrick Kindred, but that may be more situational than it should be an indictment on anyone who’s not out there with a certain lineup.”
Thanks for posting this. I didn't get the feeling that Hue is saying Kindred is the starting FS from that presser. It kinda sounds like Kindred and Peppers are battling for a safety position. And I would guess that would be SS.
Although, like Hue said.......there are going to be many different packages and pairings out there.
Are you concerned, like me, of getting caught in a sub-package with 2 poor coverage safeties when the opposing offense sees it and decides to go no huddle? Just something I was pondering on a whim after looking at this thread.
I haven't watched our defense play at all under Williams, so I can't comment on that.
I will say that I think our safeties are not good at coverage and that does concern me.
I also think our corners aren't very good.
The secondary worries me. I hope they show a lot of improvement and alleviate my concerns. It's early. We'll see.
It's not an ACL, which is a good thing. But they don't specify the injury. He could be a IR to return candidate.
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."
SS. He is more of a closer to the LOS type of guy. He is a bit slow to react to play development when in coverage. His reaction time is slower than you would want w/a FS. He also struggles a bit in space.
Peppers seems to fit the SS type (in Williams' system especially) way more than a ranging FS

Because of his experience playing up. That's really about it. People site his issues reading coverage and reacting but it's known that many times his assignment was more of a contain with backside help than a straight zone. When that help didn't arrive he looked bad but it usually wasn't his fault. Anyways what I mean is it's not out of the question that he could play fs and I don't think his tape shows he can't, like many do, but his tape doesn't show that he could either.

The above point was made in this scouting report which was posted several times in the weeks after we drafted him.

There is no longer an IR to return anymore. You just put him on the IR and then pull him off after a certain number of weeks (I think it was eight). Also, teams now get to bring two players off the IR instead of one.
Reynolds injury does open the door to see what we have in Nacua.
I was pleased to see we had picked up him up as a UDFA and many scouting sites spoke pretty well of him. I know many around here are high on him as well.
Hoping he's a diamond in the rough and not just the latest Frisman Jackson/Nick Speegle/Ben Gay/etc,

Yep I think I was the 2nd of now 3 people to have posted that. It definitely brings light to his responsibilities.
But IF he can learn single post FS then why should we pigeonhole him there when the DB room is filled with SS types?
That's basically my thinking. While he has proving to do I would argue we don't have anyone who can even be average at fs currently. SS we have about 3 that can be close if not average

That was a good video. However, I suggest turning the volume down and watching his clips w/simply your own eyes. Then come back and tell me about his reads and also his reactions to receivers' moves.
admittedly i've never seen Nacua play ... does someone have his measurements/numbers? is he able to close quickly? does he have the height/size?

This windbag thinks Peppers position will be football player ... i don't think u will be able to define his roll with traditional football position terminology ... At least i hope not ...

With Ed Reynolds out for an extended period with his injury, who would you want to see get reps at the free safety position?
Someone who is not currently on the roster, unless that Nacua guy can play. I can't comment on him because I don't remember him from his college games and I didn't research him.

McCourty...I stated previously that usually my request for position change doesn't come to fruition. But I see the Staff now mentioning McCourty taking reps there..which for me is very satisfying.
He has the experience and intelligence to make the Coverage calls usually reserved for the FS.
He has ball hawking skills and with his eyes on the QB and not manning up on a WR I think will have positive results especially if we get a mad Pass Rush this year.
His Run support I'm not that sure of. But if you have to rely on your FS on make or break for D on the Run...you are up chips creek anyways!

we'll see if this transpires, even a little bit

I remember (I think) when Pryor came out of Louisville he was listed as a FS ... I didn't follow his career with NYJ at all, but clearly he became a box/SS ... and not a good one obviously

He cannot stay healthy at CB, so how is he going to stay healthy when he has to hit more often?
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.
John 14:19 Jesus said: Because I live, you also will live.
I'm wondering if there's any chance we see Boddy-Calhoun at safety. Not sure about the tackling, but he has some ball skills.
Gregg asked everyone on defense to learn two positions, so I bet he's already taken some reps there that went unnoticed, but I bet he'll be corner all the way when the 53 man gets set.
