But that's what happens all the time in pro football. Every FA, every draft. Sort of, but with the draft and FA you are trying to shore up the positions where you have holes not positions you are OK with. If you are a FO and you feel just "OK" with your QB, you probably aren't going anywhere.

Folks can line up and take sides on the QB and FO situation as always .. Some will be to be right and some wrong . I have very low expectations for the season as of today. I will however be very interested in seeing how the Berry / Stefanski situation play's out .

But if you already feel the person you have at that position can get the job done than why would you alienate them and try to get someone else?

To me, by trying to get someone else they don't think he can get the job done. I think it is that simple. Now, one might not agree with the idea that he can't get the job done but I think the FO actions tend to speak for itself.

There are probably 24-25 teams in the NFL that don't have an ELITE QB. In Theory if the talking heads and posters on this board are correct that Watson is a top 5QB in the NFL.... 27 other teams should have been trading for Watson. But they weren't. Other teams have QBs on rookie contracts.

I don't blame Baker for wanting to be traded after this fiasco. It's like your boss telling you everyday that your doing a good job and then one day as he's walking away he says "Oh by the way if we can find someone better we're going to replace you." Then a week later you see the boss interviewing someone and you ask someone else what's going on and they say "The boss is interviewing your replacement". And I don't blame the Berry and the Browns for wanting to get a better player but I do blame them for how they handled this. They should have just put out feelers to Watson on his thoughts about being a Brown and when they found out they would be long shots to acquire him they should have dropped it right then instead of meeting with him and trying to convince him to come to Cleveland. The problem with this is that the NFL isn't like most jobs. Teams bring in a default 7 new "workers" every year and only 53 can be kept. Most jobs profits don't rely on the business's wins and losses in head to head competition with other "businesses" that are constantly adding new talent. Most workers don't take a job with your non-NFL business because of one other employee. Von Miller went to Buffalo to play with Josh Allen. Quite a few players seem to be waiting on Watson's decision. It doesn't seem like Baker is a draw for any free agents after last season. How many businesses are going to keep an employee with an oversized ego that constantly has to be handled with kids' gloves when he's performing below average when compared to his peers? Oh, and his salary is about to double and he wants even more money than that on a long-term deal. At a regular business, the "entire world" isn't watching out for a disgruntled employee's social media. At a regular business an employee wouldn't release a passive aggressive "thank you" to the business's customers or at least the business's customers probably wouldn't even be following him. It's a Not For Long hyper-competitive business. It's not a committed romantic relationship, either. Teams are always looking for better. Better isn't always available, but teams are always looking.

Stainbrook made an interesting point. I'm of the opinion that Matt Ryan is probably our best bet in terms of bringing in a vet (if it's true that any chance of Baker playing next season is gone). If Watson goes to ATL, then we could force the issue some by getting Mayfield to the Colts in a hurry.

Let's do the math: Watson top 5. 4 teams tried to trade. 9 out of 32. So there are 23 rookie contracts? Damn.

Matt Ryan is a very, very bad QB. Very bad. You can pretty much lock in 5-12 or worse if that happens.
There really are no good options. I think the best option is Jimmy G. While somewhat of a Baker clone, he's an upgrade over Baker. He's a little better.
The next option is we better hope they liked someone in the draft and can get him.
Otherwise, it's back to the basement. But it was going to be that way with Baker as well. This FO's hands were really tied.
This is the result when 1st overall picks don't workout. You just can't miss on those. Some teams get lucky when they are drafting #1 overall. Of course, not the Browns.

Imagine how that would go over, they chase Matt Ryan, and claim it's because they need a "Mature" Adult in the QB room, then Matt goes to Indy instead. Then I would sit back with my popcorn and watch the board light up.

I have very low expectations for the season as of today. I will however be very interested in seeing how the Berry / Stefanski situation play's out . It's not even April, yet, and I'm already in the boat of feeling like I will be perfectly fine not even watching this team, or even following them going forward. I think I've finally had enough, and I'm just feeling done with it all. I mean, how many times should we sit through watching this team APPEAR to *finally* be making strides only to ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS shoot themselves in the foot OVER AND OVER AND OVER with manufactured drama and gross mismanagement? It's clear that even the new guys are just the Same ol' Browns, so why bother? The hardest part will be not following, though, simply because of this site, lol. It's not going anywhere, so I'll still find myself here, which means I'll read and post, but I'm just completely done with these clowns.
Browns is the Browns

I am trying to remember how good I felt when we beat Pittsburgh in the playoffs.
How bright the future looked.
It is unreal how far humpty dumpty feel from the wall.
The future now looks like covid.

I'll take your word on Matt Ryan. Obviously, he's not going to set anyone's world on fire, but we need a bridge between where we are now and our next "guy", who I assume will come via the draft.
I think the FO's move to improve the QB has failed miserably. At this point, it looks like Keenum will be our starter. IMO, that's a giant step back from healthy Baker, and I'd argue breaking even from unhealthy Baker.

Then why didn't Berry and KS go after a QB when they first got here or after the 2020 season? Why didn't we try to draft Burrow or Herbert? or Lawrence, Wilson or Lance? or try to trade for Rodgers last year? If they don't think he can be the guy why did they wait 2 years?

If Watson goes to the Saints?
Would Atlanta consider a Baker for Ryan trade?
Maybe Baker and a thrid for Ryan. The money part??

We are a long way form being able to map out any sort of plan or forecast .. but getting Ryan and drafting Willis might be the best outcome from all of this. Willis sits behind an aging QB who probably has enough in the tank to run KS offense. Willis sits for a year. I hate the idea of adding a pick to get Ryan ... that's nuts to me. I'd say the pick should come OUR way based on conditions.

Can I ask what leads you to that conclusion? It's a serious question. Not trying to be snarky. I can only speak for myself - but one factor is that, before he was hurt in week 2 this year, and the 9 previous games at the end of last year he was ranked by PFF as the 5th best QB in the NFL. And because, despite a terrible defense last year that gave up lots of game losing drives after Baker had taken the lead in the 4th Q - we still went to the playoffs and won a game. That's just me. I fully acknowledge that I don't pay any attention to how awful he was after week 2 of last year because he was badly hurt.

Funny that keeps getting omitted. I mean factually if we just talk about the QB last year - it was bad. But then it doesn't take much to dig just a little deeper. . . . I guess the next thing I will see is how (I think it was) Josh Allen played with a torn labarum - of course the injuries were nothing alike and Josh didn't have a broken humerus or a shoulder harness the size of a shopping basket ... but you know.
