I wonder if we consider bringing Josh Dobbs back next year? Mayfield is a free agent

Jacob Roach? I googled who is this guy? Nobody really.
What were the players asked to do in the scheme? Grade to doing what you are asked to do.
Greedy Williams. He hardly played. Greedy is a man corner. That is what he was in college and that is what he is best at. His time with the Browns has proved to be a bad fit. The Browns played mostly zone during his time with the Browns and he was injured. He will be gone.
Martin Emerson. For a rookie overall I would grade him "A." He plays aggressively and with confidence. I really like him and think he could adapt to many roles. It will be interesting to see how JS plays him.
Greg Newsome. He is a first round pick who came into the Browns as a boundary corner. He has great skills and is versatile. Woods moved him to slot because he was the best option on the team to play the position. He deserves a "B" at least because he was out of position and played above average.
Denzel Ward. I saw some things with Ward this season that I was unhappy with. There were times when I questioned his effort. Effort and attitude is something you as a player can control. I dislike seeing poor effort. And I don't like players throwing doubt on others. With that stated Ward is very talented. in fact he is elite as a boundary corner. He is a guy I expect JS to put a fire under. I agree with the grade of "C-. "

Watson is a "highly volatile" quarterback? Perhaps the author doesn't have a great command of language and it was an honest mistake, but I have never read or seen any evidence of Watson's moods being remotely volatile.

I think Ward gets a bad rap on here. I also think our corners are very good and not an issue at all. It will be interesting to see how Schwartz uses them.

We don't know if Ward's early season woes were mainly his or mainly Woods - or a bit of both. But early in 2022 Ward consistently ranked as a very poor performer - both based on the eye test and the PFF grading.
If you are talking about injuries and his reputation with some for being fragile/missing games - I agree. The reality is Ward has not missed that much. He played far too aggressively in his rookie year hitting instead of tackling bigger TE's etc - he missed some time for Covid - other than that his injury time has been modest and what I would consider pretty average.
The more things change the more they stay the same.

To me it sounds like you're laying the groundwork to find a reason to attack the FO if anything goes wrong. I've seen people also post built in excuses to try to minimize and prepare the groundwork for the possibility of things going wrong. As I said, there's a log way until the season starts next year. There will be many options available between now and then that don't include Brissett. The sky is not falling. At least not yet.

I have one concern...not watching the Browns management screw up the chances of the 2023 team making a serious run at the playoffs and a chance to compete for a Super Bowl.
The best option for a backup QB to Watson is Brissett and while many believe we need to pinch pennies now that we spent a ton on Watson, I say it could be the biggest mistake this franchise makes if our "running QB" should be injured.
Smart teams try to plan for potential problems, such as their #1 qb being injured...dumb teams pray that their running QB is tough enough endure the punishment.
This is not the time for Haslam and Berry to "go cheap" and gamble the 2023 season on anything less than the best backup QB they can sign.

Let me explain to you what a "smart team" would do. They would find a backup QB that plays a similar style to watson as the backup. What that would do is make the transition to the backup if needed a much easier transition. That's not Brissett. You seem to continue with your diatribe that Brissett is the only good solution. When comparing the skill set of each QB they aren't even close. Brissett isn't the only competent backup QB that will be available to the Browns. That's like saying that of you don't sign *insert name here* at any particular position a team has failed. That's just not true.

Decent backup QB...great guy...teammates love him. But you are spot on there ^ IMO. I think that's why Mond burned up a roster spot all year. I am nervous about Mond being the guy - unproven and all - but he's more in the mold of DW. That, and with ~$50MM on the cap for DW, there is no way we are going to spend enough on the backup QB to even attempt to sign Jacoby. Jacoby? Or a DT? Or a better DT? Easy decision.

I don't think Mond will be the backup next year. Watson is a very different QB than Brissett. As such I look for them to find a more reliable and somewhat different style of backup. I don't think they would risk derailing a season if for example if watson was sidelined for a few games with someone with no real NFL experience such as Mond. I understand your point and I don't think they'll make some huge investment at the backup QB position. But the suggestion Vers made about getting Dobbs back is exactly the kind of scenario I'm thinking of.

The Browns had Dobbs on their roster in 2022, signing him to a one-year, $1 million dollar contract but he was waived 11/28/22 after when Watson returned from suspension.
Dobbs has had 2 starts for Tenn..both losses.
QBR rank for 2022.. ..#55 - Joshua Dobbs, TEN
2022 Passing STATS.............CMP....ATT....CMP%....YDS....AVG....TD....INT....LNG.....RTG.... reg/sea............40......68.....58.8......411.....6.0......2.......2......39......73.8... career..............50......85.....58.8......456.....5.4......2.......3......39......66.6...
Stefanski would training 2 qbs for the 2023 season if Brissett is not signed. Brissett gives the Browns the best chance to win...period. There is nothing more important to me than winning...!

The offense will be completely different with watson as QB. Brissett's play in 2022 will in no way resemble the O the Browns will be running in 2023. And you can't train a skill set to a QB that does not possess that skill set.

Wards' overall PFF grade went from 76 in 2021 to 56 in 2022.
PFF is a grading system. It does not take into consideration coaching.
However, his production fell off.
I know Ward is an elite corner. I know what he can do. What bugs me about this past season was his effort.
I saw him give up on plays that he had a shot at. I saw decisions that he made where it was clear that if he read the play correctly he could have made the play.
Hard to say how much blame should go to Woods. But I don't think Ward played well in 2022.

I posted the news about Jacoby having one of the 5 Best Value Contracts in the entire NFL as a good news piece. Our FO and coaching staff takes a ton of heat and I thought it would be nice for "fans" of the team to see something positive. I thought Berry deserved credit for the signing. I did realize that someone or perhaps multiple people would turn it into a negative.
I find it ludicrous to say something about the Browns not wanting to win if they don't sign Jacoby. Why? Maybe because we just gave a QB the highest fully guaranteed contract ever. One may question if Watson was worth it, but we signed him to that contract because we want to win and we put our money where our mouth is.
Look, it would be foolish to pay Jacoby starting qb money. We already have a ton invested in that position. It would be even more foolish to expect Jacoby to give us a discount. He's trying to provide generational economic stability for his family.
This team is married to Watson. His play will go a long way in regards to our success. Look at some of the other top QBs in the league and think about their backups. Mahomes and Henne. I didn't realize Henne was still in the league until our playoff game. Burrow and ??? I don't know the dude's name. Allen and Keenum. We know all about Case. Herbert and Chase Daniels. LOL.
I am not sure just how much the offense will change next year. Probably not as much as some expect. Our current system is qb friendly. We will probably incorporate more pistol and add in more read/option plays. So, I don't know if we need a qb who plays similarly to Watson or not. What I do want is a guy who can be another sounding board for Watson. Someone intelligent. Someone Watson respects. Jacoby and Watson had what appeared to be a very good relationship. So did Jacoby and Dobbs. One thing I noticed is that the qbs spoke together on the sidelines more than they did Van Pelt. We need an intelligent sounding board at backup qb. Who is that guy?
I don't know for sure, but Dobbs is a great candidate. Big Ben always talked to Dobbs in their years together in Pittsburgh. Ben actually credited Dobbs for his understanding of the game and how big of a help he was. His intelligence is not to be questioned. He graduated w/a 4.0 average in Aerospace Engineering. He probably won't cost too much and we can invest more money on positions of need.
Dobbs is my choice for backup qb provided that Jacoby gets starter's money somewhere else.

I think many of our players were misused or poorly coached to the point we really don't know how good we can be on D with the current roster. The DB group has a lot of talent that is only flashing its true potential, IMHO. We may well see a huge change just with new coaching and the things that come with it. It would be great to see the cupboard isn't as empty as last year made it seem.

I find it ludicrous to say something about the Browns not wanting to win if they don't sign Jacoby. Why I haven't seen anyone turn Berry's signing of Brissett into a negative. The posts I've read about Berry signing Brissett have all been positive. Don't know where your getting this info from...maybe you can show us..?I find it ludicrous to say something about the Browns not wanting to win if they don't sign Jacoby. Why? I find it ludicrous that the Browns did not try to sign Brissett during the 2022 season, when there was no competition from other teams. Brissett is the QB who gives the Browns the best chance to win if Watson is injured during the 2023 season.
Why did GM Berry wait until after the 2022 season ended to begin addressing the backup QB needs for 2023 ?
The Browns had both Brissett and Dobbs signed to contracts and didn't extend or sign either to be the Browns backup QB to Watson. Matter of fact, the Browns also had ex-Vikings QB Kellen Mond who they signed off of waivers on Aug 31, 2022.
IMO, GM Berry's #1 priority is signing the CHEAPEST possible backup QB rather than signing the best qualified QB who gives the Browns the best chance to win is Watson is injured.
vers, I'm about WINNING and I'm all for signing the players who give the Browns the best chance to win in 2023...and if you want to spin that into me being negative...go right ahead.
Haslam and his merry management team set this situation up and now they are forced to expose their priorities...is winning their #1 priority..?
OR, are the Browns forced to be cheap because they spent so much on one guy?
QBs, especially running QBs, get hurt during the season, therefore one would think that the Browns are smart enough to plan for that possibility. I don't want to see the Browns blow another opportunity to make the playoffs with a legitimate chance to compete for a Super Bowl because they went cheap. This issue should have been addressed during the season, imo.

In some respects, it seems that the Browns are already in cap hell, if the management team is forced make the 'cheapest option' their #1 priority.
The Browns ignored signing DT help during the 2022 season, when it was so obvious that the defense needed help in an effort to stop the run...that might have been the first indication that the Browns management was already placing 'the cheapest option' ahead of 'winning'. This afternoon we can watch the Eagles playing in the NFC Championship game after they signed two of the top FA DTs half way through the 2022 season.
Ndamukong Suh and Linval Joseph were available to the Browns or any other team that needed DT help...but the Eagles management clearly had winning as their #1 priority and quickly signed both DTs after the Eagles lost to the Commanders Nov 14 as Washington rolled up 152 rushing yds and possessed the ball twice as long as the Eagles...40:24 minutes to 19:36 minutes.
I doubt that many will admit it, but it is beginning to look like the Browns now have some serious cap issues that they are going to be forced to deal with after making Watson the highest paid QB in the NFL.
Regardless, my expectations for the Browns will not change...no more excuses, winning is the #1 priority. Now it's up to the Browns owner, management, coaches and players "to produce".

Mac, why doesn't Mac, pursue down the rabbit hole of Malik Jackson not returning to the Browns at DT help as often as you/he post/posts about going down the rabbit hole of the Browns not signing Ndamakon Suh as DT help, when MJ> had already been on the team.
And that's a @uestion for Mac and for others but that really ... isn't the bigger point, the bigger point is, that it highlights
that, the team... must have thought, and evidently in a failure of thinking, or doing,
It highlights that the team wanted to develop smaller, penetrating, or less experienced DTs and they couldn't
BUT NOT ONLY THAT, but that, THEY COULDN'T FREAKING SEE THAT IT WASN'T GOING TO WORK FROM THE GET GO.
When every football fan, who ever watched 24 years of the NFL could have seen if in their sleep.
so what it really highlights..... ....... ARRRRGGGGH is Berry, DEPO And ANALYTIC s are DUMMMMMMMBBBBBB Numbskulls and Blind, and or clueless
I'm so angry right now, Pathetic, they wasted a whole year. ANOTHER one.
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

Regardless, my expectations for the Browns will not change...no more excuses, winning is the #1 priority. Now it's up to the Browns owner, management, coaches and players "to produce". I've been trying to point out that the Browns are in cap hell and getting ready to make it worse. Keep in mind, the Browns had nearly 25M in rollover cap for 2023. Even with that rollover, they are nearly 15M over the cap right now before they do anything to fix it so they can get some much-needed players. The cap is like a credit card, you can spend and spend while making the minimum payments but eventually the balance has to be paid. Unfortunately, the NFL doesn't allow you to spread that cost out 20 years so hang on to your hats my fellow fans. That can they're kicking down the road is about to become as big as a dumpster. The Browns already have the 6th highest prorated bonus costs in the league before they start moving money this year. Some of you reference the NOS from last year. The franchise was $74 million over the salary cap for the 2022 season -- $34 million more than the next closest team, per Over The Cap -- and there isn't a clear path to the surface. General manager Mickey Loomis was tasked with finding Payton's replacement while also digging New Orleans out of an avalanche of void years and bloated contracts (they'll carry millions in dead money next season from guys who didn't even take a snap for them this season) that have the franchise's ledger full of red. To get this process underway in earnest, the Saints had to trade some of their high-priced stars; the guys who not only have the biggest cap imprint but carry the most market value. If New Orleans opts to rip off the Band-Aid in Year 1 with its new coach, it will likely look to shed a ton of salary while acquiring as much draft capital as possible. This means contenders around the NFL looking to fill roster holes might be able to obtain Pro Bowlers at perhaps bargain prices. Of course, sacrifices had to be made. The Saints released several veterans from the second tier of their roster they might have kept in previous years -- a group that includes Jenkins, receiver Emmanuel Sanders, linebacker Kwon Alexander, punter Thomas Morstead, tight end Josh Hill and guard Nick Easton. They traded defensive tackle Malcom Brown. They also let defensive end Trey Hendrickson get away in free agency, among others. They also lost 3X pro bowler LT Armstead to free agency due to their cap issues. And the Saints restructured almost every other contract they could, pushing cap costs into the future bringing them right back to this same situation in 2022. As of now, the Saints are 58.4M over the cap for 2023 and face the same type of cuts as 2022. The Browns are on a collision course with the exact same problems coming to light as soon as next year. The can is already a dumpster, and the Browns are about to make it much bigger. You don't have to agree with my opinion, but the sky is falling - you just won't accept it - YET.

Seems obvious that the Browns did not think that highly of his performance in 2021.
Try to keep in mind that the Browns in charge of judging football talent hold themselves in very high regard. Obviously they thought their choices for 2022 were better than Jackson.

It's fun, especially when you try to find a specific post and know it's a hopeless task as it may have been in any thread.

I'd appreciate it if you would direct your hatred posts to the individuals that started what you say is hijacking of the post. You do this every single time, you wait until there's a post by someone you always attack before you say anything about the direction of the post. I have a right on this forum to express my opinion and to counter point any opinion I do not agree with. If you really want to talk about hijacking every post in this forum, how about looking in the mirror to see the person who actually hijacks every single post by attacking fellow Browns Fans you don't like in every single post - a person just has to wait until you see a post from someone you don't like. That's where the real issue is - not the few of us that want to talk about the future of the Browns - unlike you and your continued attacks of hatred.

Gotta love the pro bowl, no matter which incarnation. I think the time has come to put these guys on a harmless, 2 or 3 day gameshow like Match Game '78 the weekend before the Superbowl and give them some face time that way. Safe, fun - and I bet the players would like it more. Fans would get a kick out of it - sponsors would line up hopefully. There could still be some libations and innocent hijinks off air. Who could take over for Rayburn? I'm not kidding by the way.

Good post. I think discussing injuries would make for a fascinating thread topic. There is no doubt that today's athletes are physically superior in so many ways to those who preceded them. However, they sure as hell seem to get injured a lot more than those who came before them. Discussing the "why" of it would be a good topic, but the thread would probably be quickly hijacked by the same few who hijack every thread.

I think about these injuries all the time. Superb physical condition, but constant hamstring, calf, and a lot of pec injuries. Maybe these guys are tweaked a little to tight.
RIP, Jim

That’s an argument peen puts forth once in awhile, all muscle and lot enough fat.
They’re TOO fit and maybe that’s true. Also teams are more likely to put a premium on a players well-being because of the financial investment. And players make enough money these days they can say, “screw you, I won’t rub some dirt on this leg bone sticking out of my skin and go back in there’

Insider: Browns could try to re-structure John Johnson III's contract to retain himJacob Roach February 5, 2023 8:12 pm ET Overall, things haven’t gone how the Cleveland Browns hoped when they signed veteran safety John Johnson III two years ago in free agency. There have been flashes and some great games but he has not looked like the player he was with the Los Angeles Rams. Some believe that it was mostly because of the scheme Joe Woods was running and others question his effort levels at times. Most have thought that the Browns would wash their hands of the deal and save the cap space by releasing him. But Browns insider Mary Kay Cabot isn’t certain that a release is coming without trying to redo the contract. “It will depend, in part, on new defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz’s evaluation of Johnson, but I think the Browns will try to restructure his contract to lower that number, and if the two sides can’t agree, they’ll either trade of release him as a June 1 designation, in which case they’ll save $9.75 million on the cap.” https://brownswire.usatoday.com/202...medium=trueanthem&utm_source=twitter
