Not exactly my first choice, and not to happy about hiring a HC without a GM. I am happy that we DID GET an HC with NFL experience. That is what I was after and that's what I got. It's all over not but the hand shakin. Welcome aboard EM!

FYI: Practice for the Senior Bowl begins in less than two weeks. Time for Mangini and Co. to get to work. I feel much better about our staff being in place and ready to go than those other teams who haven't got a clue who they're going to have. But maybe we should wait until Shanahan gets back from sipping margartias in Cabo to make a decision.

Now a coach picking his GM is very odd and USUALLY you should hire the GM first, then the HC.
I'm telling you,, Lerner feels as if he got his Belichick clone.. he's gonna let him pick his GM...
I don't really have a problem with that, it's just odd...
If you look around the league, you will see that there is not just one right way to build a FO and Coaching staff. Just different ways. with the right folks, just about any of them can work.

I think Lerner knows he has Kokinis already. And both Mangini and Kokinis were already candidates for the job, so why does it matter who is hired first?
Would yall rather have the coach from Iowa here?
Let's go Mangini. Get these guys ready.
I don't think we will have a GM until February though... I really think the Ravens will be in the Super Bowl.

Wishful thinking on your part. he's not selling that team until he produces a winner... that way the value will be up.. That's when you sell, not when value is down.
On the other hand, it was just a few weeks ago that I read an article that he wouldn't sell the team while his Mom was alive. Not exactly sure what that has to do with it,,

It's like I said some time back....you can hire a strong GM with a coach under him, or you can hire a strong coach with a GM who works to compliment him. Really no other way to do it.
I think this route..the stronger coach is the way to go...at least now, in this situation.

That is very well said.....I personally am very un-happy about the signing....but I guess I will have to get used to it for at least 1 year......If he can bring Ryan in as the DC, then I would have to credit him with a good decision....but the draft and FA will be the true tell all about him I think...... I just hope he doesn't go into re-building mode wanting his own players and all of that jazz...Come in and make a statement cut by nixing one of the starters...IE. Bill Parcells.....that would probably be good for the team.....he could start with Andra Davis if he wanted...... .....

Let's face it, the Jets fired Mangini. There is a chance that the Jets are right. I know they are not the most respected organization, but how different are they from the Browns???
So true.. anything is possible.. But then again, Butch Davis hadn't been fired before,, look how that turned out.
I kinda look at the jets and see an organization in shambles a little.. They have a young HC that seems to have the control over the team, they bring in a Favre, treat him like a hero and seemingly not accountable for his actions and when things go south, fire the HC..
Then go out and throw the GM under a bus in order to attempt to attract a HC that has said a million times, he's not coaching in 2009.... TO me, that means that the owner isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer.
Mangini likes disipline.. what has this team lacked... yup that's right.
I've been kinda vocal about not wanting anymore folks from the NE Tree.. More precisely the Belichick tree. Mostly referring to Pioli. But it extended to Mangini and McDaniels as well. I think the tree is somewhat tainted.
But It's not all doom and gloom. Mangini is a smart guy.. he had a decent NFL record as a HC. Two solid years, one down year. Even Belichick himself has had a few of those in his first HCing stint.
So, as with any HC we've had,, I'll stand by them until they show me I can't.
Welcome to Cleveland Coach,, now get to work.

Thats what I was trying to convey to a few folks on here that are terribly upset at the Mangini hiring.
There is not just ONE way to get it done.. Nothing has to be etched in stone about the method and process for hiring a staff.
Only time will tell.....

J/C I'm not thrilled with the hire, but whatever. This is Cleveland and I have come to expect weird and questionable decisions that the Browns make. Just add this one to the list.
Like Randy Cross said this morning on Sirius NFL radio, Randy Lerner must think Mangini is his #1 football guy. Let's hope he's right.

I still don't see who else you wanted him to interview.
Off the top of my head, Shanahan, Schwartz (who cancelled when Lerner's infatuation for Mangini was clear), Raheem Morris, Rex Ryan, Leslie Frasier just off the top of my head. You can't possibly tell me that interviewing two other candidates (and one Rooney Rule candidate) than the guy you hire in 9 days after you fire your head coach consistitutes due diligence.
Face it, he fell in love with Mangini and everything else went out the window.
Maybe others declined to come in due to the reports that Mangini was the front runner. You can't force people to do an interview.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

There have been many fine posts in response to yours. I would like to add one thing that hadn't seen mentioned. By getting our HC early, and really, it seems even you admit the choice was not a bad one, Mangini has time to interview and hire his assistants
That is a luxury RAC did not have. By the time RAC came on board all the good assistants had been hired by other teams and he was stuck choosing from the lessor tier of assistants. A lot of people blamed him for not choosing the right people in the first place having to replace them soon after, but the reality was that there was not a lot to choose from. Our new HC has been spared that restriction.
I'll add to that..it gives Mangini a early OPPORTUNITY to look over the roster and see what he needs to aquire.. Now my thinking is very subdued at the moment..Mangini is the most experienced of the available coaches..but it's the GM thing that bugs me..I was looking at Heckert..a lot.. Ernie Accorsi apparantly is a guy Lerner speaks to..interesting...he recommends Kokinis.. I also have cautious feelings about this hiring..but I think it's also obvious the team wouldn't be overhauled..just the coaches..lol..

http://www.cantonrep.com/sports/browns/x...-the-right-timeTodd Porter: Mangini becomes right choice at the right time BEREA — You wanted Bill Cowher. You wanted Mike Shanahan. Some of you even wanted to dust off Marty Schottenheimer and prop him up on the sideline to recapture some of that 1980s Browns magic. Instead, you got Eric Mangini, the best available coach right now. Say what you want, but Mangini is the obvious choice for owner Randy Lerner. No one knows how hirings will go. The Browns haven’t made a single hire since 1999 where a plausible argument for success couldn’t be made at the announcement. What Lerner is doing is hedging his bet. And the odds are in his favor. The team did research and found coaches fired after their first head coaching job have success in their second stint. Those odds go back to Don Shula. They include Tony Dungy and Bill Belichick. Smart coaches learn from their mistakes. Mangini is intelligent beyond football. Lerner didn’t want to get caught waiting. Shanahan isn’t talking until next week, at the earliest, and even then he may opt to stay out. Cowher isn’t going to coach in 2009, and gave Lerner his word he wouldn’t. Neither is Mike Holmgren. Lerner either met with your favorites or reached out to the realistic ones. He would have flown across the globe to meet with Shanahan, even bringing him breakfast. Shanahan wanted his time away, though. The Browns owner wanted to hire his guy before someone else did. The Browns, through league chatter, heard Kansas City and Detroit were in “conversation” with Mangini. This made Lerner nervous. If Lerner lost Mangini, then who? A first-year head coach? The Browns aren’t in any position to be someone else’s training ground again. Mangini knows how to put together an offseason program. He knows how to prepare for a draft and free agency. He’s been through it. When Lerner interviewed coordinators Josh McDaniels, Mel Tucker and Steve Spagnuolo, none of them had experience running a team. Let’s face it, what the Browns need help with more than anything else is as simple as that — running a football team. There is less risk tolerance with Mangini than with a rookie head coach. You wanted someone with a track record and an appetite to win. Mangini has that. The Browns need someone strong enough to make decisions not based on media or fan opinion. Mangini is coming from the toughest media market in the world. Mangini produced winning seasons two out of three years in New York, something no Browns coach has done since Schottenheimer was a young man. The Jets were 8-3 this year and collapsed on the right arm and the ego of 39-year Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre. Mangini is intense. He’s demanding. He won’t coddle players, not even Favre. In other words, he is everything Romeo Crennel was not. Cleveland’s players are of the age and experience that they need a kick to the backside, not a pat on the shoulder. A person close to Lerner said the owner was impressed with Mangini from their first meeting. This isn’t a love affair, though. This is business. Lerner is tired of losing. Mangini wants to prove himself — again. It was about the odds. It was about getting this as right as possible. There was one other thing Lerner likes about his new coach, something no one else has. Mangini is coming to Cleveland with a huge chip on his shoulder. He’s hellbent on two things: succeeding as a head coach, and doing so outside of Belichick’s large shadow. What he needs as bad as the Browns is success. That’s what makes this a mutual marriage.
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.
John 14:19 Jesus said: Because I live, you also will live.

I absolutly believe that's exactly what Lerner thinks... I've said it before in this very thread,, I think Lerner feels as if he's got his Belichick Clone.. Now he's looking for the next Pioli...
I sure hope he's right. Even I have to admit, the similarities between Belichick and Mangini are scary.. almost eerie in a way.. besides the obvious physical traits such as ht/wt and same general build (mangini looks to be a little heavier), they both are said to be task masters and stoic. Not afraid to call guys out so to speak.
So I guess I can see it. I can see that they are similar in a lot of ways. It may or may not mean a thing really.
I guess we'll see.

Well like I said, who knows what is true and what isn't. I guess it comes down to what's more important. The GM or the coach.
No matter what the combination, you need to make sure they're on the same page. As much as I'd love to see the Pioli-Mangini team, it obviously wasn't happening. Lerner and his team allegedly did a lot of research, and must have felt landing the right coach was more important than landing the right GM.
If you're asking that question, then I agree with you, but I think Lerner has been asking the wrong question all along. I don't think the question should have been whether or not a stud GM or stud head coach leads to better success, but rather, the BEST question to ask is what is most important to a successful franchise. The answer to THAT question is a great front office.
If you look at most of the great organizations out there right now - New England, Indianapolis, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, etc., they all have great front offices. Now, not all of them (like Pittsburgh) have a figurehead GM, but they all know their team identity and they are consistently excellent. For as much as everyone was salivating about Cowher, Pittsburgh's organization replaced him with Tomlin without a hitch. Ozzie and Baltimore's front office grabbed Harbaugh out of nowhere after an extensive search are are now one round deep in the playoffs. If you assemble a great front office, things will take care of themselves.
The whole reason for bringing in Pioli wasn't that he is more valuable to a winning franchise than the coach but rather, our franchise is a LOSING franchise and he's seen how a successful operation is run. Pioli supposedly wanted to blow the front office up and rebuild. Lerner didn't. What kind of a statement is that for how things have been and will be run? He could have implemented the winning mentality and formula from New England here and turned our front office from chaos to success. Who with this organization right now knows how to do that?
Lerner keeps looking at the coach failures, but he seemingly misses the front office problems. We had Dwight Clark drafting for us without a clue what he was doing, then we gave things over to Butch Davis who was just as bad, then we brought in Phil Savage who was a scout more than anything. We've had cancer in the front office ever since the return. Yet, our soon-to-be GM (who is even less qualified than Savage) pretty much has the job without even having an interview and building the front office has become an afterthought?
What the hell?
Randy can bring in all the coaching he wants but until he fixes the front office, our problems will likely continue. Hopefully Kokinis is the answer to that, as many like the guy, but he also faces a ridiculously steep learning curve in doing so. Regardless, I just don't know that I can say Randy did the right thing by flipping his direction for this off-season, regardless of if he got the coach of his dreams or not.
We're... we're good?

I'm happy the speculation is over. I have no idea, as nobody here does, if this will be a good fit or not. Something makes me feel that it is and I'm excited to see how this team looks next season. Go Mangini and the Browns!!

Well glad to see it done...I thought we were going to wait for Kokinis to be available before consumating the marriage. But Randy knew what he wanted and knew he had his guy after his interview with Mangini.
For those who think Randy didn't due his deligence in finding the right HC and sifting through the candidates.
We wanted to interview two who were in the playoffs and got one of the interviews done the other opted out on us cause he heard we were very impressed with Mangini.
McDaniels, Tucker, Spagnoula, Cowher, Mangini - Rex Ryan and Shanahan were the only other candidates.
Dawgs remember Marty stated that he wasn't prepared to be HC but was interested in the GM portion if it meant working with Cowher.
Shanahan...well lets see we got a HC opening we contacted him immediately, Randy would have provided his jet and make it an IN n Out - Shanahan could have made it a Bed n Breakfast weekend at NY with his wife. Well Shanahan wasn't about the Browns - he's about Shanahan. King Shanahan would not have been a good option. If the Browns job was one he would really be interested in he would have interviewed. Only the Jets job would look attractive maybe??? but he would have to have the guy who would interview him fire himself...hmmm what are the odds?
Shanahan is taking the season off. Possibly there is an outside chance taking over the entire program at KC or Detroit. But I think he would want a ready to win situation. Like Norv Turner got in San Diego. Wade Phillips in Dallas. No way Shanahan comes here. And quite frankly I don't think it would be good on his terms. I like Randy's vision of two working together.
Randy not knowing what he's doing....he studied 5 years. His strongest confident and friend has been Ernie Accorsi. Does anyone think its just a coincident that the 3 candidates for the Falcons GM were Dimtroff, Heckert and Kokinis all advised by Accorsi for the consideration. Then we interview 3 candidates...Pioli, Heckert and Kokinis (not sure if we did interview Heckert I think we did Tuesday? and Kokinis we have had communications and know his background. Accorsi knows his football. Present Giants. Advisor to Blank last year. Friend and confidant to Randy...
Rush to the hire. I like somebody who knows what they want and when they find it...KNOW IT. I don't know how you all shop but thats how I do it. I remember when I got engaged and we shopped for our living room furniture. I'm at this showroom about a mile long. I literally ran through it looking left n right - my future wife n mother in law way back. Well they caught up and I'm sitting in my lounge chair...they said wow, this is nice. Aren't you going further? Nope as I sat there with my feet up...2 hours later they showed up and said - you're right this is perfect!
Sometimes you just know!!! I don't see this as a rush to judgment - I see this as Randy having a vision of what he wanted. Young, experienced, Up n Comer ready to make their move. Knowledgeable, well respected. He found him. He knew it the only thought was do I wait and try to sell him to the fans or just DO IT!
Ryan...I know many were hoping his brother would interview. But quite frankly he knows his stuff - give him the Ravens talent and I'm sure everyone would be wanting to interview him for the HC...lol
What I really love about this choice....Mangini can assist greatly in the GAME PLAN but Ryan can execute...I've always loved the play of the Raiders LBs - they seem to over achieve where our underachieve. The kicker, Ryan is an ATTACK STYLE philosophy...whether its 3-4, 4-3 He's into attacking the GAPs and the Raiders D has been one of their few bright spots!
The Jets, QB coach...I have no clue really. But he can't be worse than Chud. Who had good intentions but WAYYYYY TOOOOO MANY Plays...Execution...find out who we are and get good at that...Perfect that. Then work in the other plays! Chud just had no direction. He dialed up plays with no meaning or set up from other plays.
I hope this means we will run play action passes once we establish the run. I'll be a happy camper.
Well the last and only coach we hire with previous experience in our History was Nick Skorich...he left us after the 74 season with a WINNING RECORD. We have had 10 coaches since and only Marty had a winning record. 34 Seasons and only one head coach 84-88 I think in that span with a winning record.
I think its time to get this right....I think its time we got the Modell curse off of us for firing Paul Brown!! Young, Bright, So changes Mangini made so he learns from his mistakes. Players believed in him. Not one that I have heard has bashed him since his firing and trust me the NY Press was looking for that ONE PERSON if he existed.
So here we go. 2009 - and I hope it lasts 10 years. Mangini and Kokinis.
Defense wins championships. Watson play your butt off! Go Browns! CHRIST HAS RISEN! GM Strong! & Stay safe everyone!

A couple of points I think are important for those that are knocking Lerner: Quote:
Shanahan isn’t talking until next week, at the earliest, and even then he may opt to stay out.
Cowher isn’t going to coach in 2009, and gave Lerner his word he wouldn’t. Neither is Mike Holmgren.
That takes care of those guys that some were clamoring for and angry with Lerner for not interviewing,.,, here is another thought:
Quote:
Lerner either met with your favorites or reached out to the realistic ones. He would have flown across the globe to meet with Shanahan, even bringing him breakfast. Shanahan wanted his time away, though.
Doesn't sound like anything you can knock Lerner for does it.. yet some have.
Quote:
The Browns owner wanted to hire his guy before someone else did. The Browns, through league chatter, heard Kansas City and Detroit were in
“conversation” with Mangini. This made Lerner nervous.
If Lerner lost Mangini, then who? A first-year head coach?
That kinda is saying that just because we didn't hear a lot of chatter about it, some other teams were taking to Mangini.... With all the big names seemingly out of the running for this year, his choices seem simple,, Hire Mangini or pick a coach that has never been a HC in the NFL.
And from the beginning, it appeared that Lerner wanted an experienced HC.
Narrows the choices down a bit doesn't it.
Quote:
Mangini is intense. He’s demanding. He won’t coddle players, not even Favre.
In other words, he is everything Romeo Crennel was not.
If like me, you beleive that there is some talent on this team, then isn't this the right kinda guy for the this time? sounds right to me.
I was vocal about not wanting someone else from the Belichick/NE tree. I wanted them interviewed,, absolutely, But I would have preferred a more seasoned guy like Marty or Cowher. Since there is clearly some issue with Marty and Cowher wasn't ready... to me that meant Mangini was the best choice.
DOES anyone know where we can see the Presser at 10am this morning making this hire official?

I'm happy enough. We got a got that's extremely motivated to succeed. We got someone with EXPERIENCE (my biggest want). And if he succeeds, we got someone young enough to stay with us for a very long time.
I'll support him until he proves he doesn't deserve my support. I hope that never happens.

I'll second that,...
Already came up with their nicknames, assuming he picks George --

So true.. anything is possible..

It's interesting to hear your take on the decision - since you have been one of the leading proponents of the "Avoid-the-Belichick-Tree" argument. I'm fascinated to hear all of the speculation about Mangini and Lerner's decision. However, I have yet to hear any analyst say "Y'know, the Jets are not known as a well-managed organization - how can anyone assume they made the right decision in firing him?"
I'm stuck in Boston, and the folks up hear say that Lerner didn't want to give Pioli what he wanted, both in terms of salary and full control - which is bizarre. Lerner is a billionaire and has no problem spending money. And, don't you seek to hire Pioli as GM because you want to give him full control? Folks might say that Lerner did not want to give Pioli control to make decisions like hiring Ferentz. From my POV, this does not mean Lerner is unwilling to yield control. It means that Lerner has a difference of opinion with Pioli and questions the direction Pioli would take. That's a BIG difference.
I'm really wondering about Pioli. Folks say he had the opportunity to take the GM positions in Seattle (2005) and NYG, but they did not happen. Now, it appears he did not take the Cleveland job. The "trend" tells me something: either the owners/presidents see something they don't like, or Pioli has no desire to leave New England for a higher profile job. Could Pioli like the security and warmth of working under Papa Belichick's wing?

EO...excellent review.
This time folks, Randy put his neck out and said this is my franchise and I will hire the people I want.
There is no doubt, who to blame if it does not work...IF THAT IS YOUR GAME!
Looking back, so far, the Browns front office has not given the Browns a chance to win. It's always been something...the coach lacks HC experience and the GM doesn't work well with the coach...and the list goes on and on, why various attempts have failed, since 1999.
I have and will always be a Browns fan, no matter what. I support everything Lerner is doing up to now and believe he has done the best he could with what was available.
I refuse to play woulda, coulda, shoulda...not my game.
Go Browns...mac, a Browns fan longer than some of you have been alive..

j/c Well Sirius "NFL" Radio thought it would be better to air Adam Schein and John Riggins ranting about what a horrible move it was. They basically only listed the negatives about him, so all the doom & gloomers have this duo on their bandwagon. No need to postpone this til after they air the press conference.

Why should he? Switching to a 4-3 was a move to be made by the hires of the head coach and his staff assistants and Randy brought in 3-4 guys. It wouldn't make any sense to switch right away in their regime. That's a decision to be made if this fails, not before it even begins.

Is it over now? The Browns need to hurry up and get this on their site so I can watch it.
