Safety Help?

Seahawks part ways with veteran safety Russell

Posted: September 5th, 2009 | Jason Klabacha | Tags: Brian Russell, roster cutdown, Seattle Seahawks

The Seahawks have released safety Brian Russell, league sources told NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora.

Russell, a seven-year veteran, has started 32 consecutive games for the Seahawks since joining the team in 2007. Over that span, he tallied 140 tackles, two sacks and one interception.

Russell also has spent time with the Vikings (2002-04) and Browns (2005-06).

This is a real possibility considering our lack of quality at the saftey position

Dude might be the worst bust in the history of the NFL draft

How , when he wasn't well known and came in the middle of the second...and when you have allstars like Rysn Leaf , the RB from Nebraska(years ago) Junkins and others who couldn't make it?

Russell is worth a look, at least - and he never should have been let go in the first place.

Does anyone know why Russell has been released?

I would like to see him brought in if healthy and able.

Probably cause he isn't that good, and is now a backup being paid like a starter.

I would guess because they didnt want him anymore

seriously tho one mans trash is another mans treasure......I liked Russell while he was here and was mad when we let him go....now at this point in his career would he want to come back to a non-contender? I am not so sure...maybe if the cash was right!

I literally gasp when I saw Russell was cut...for the simple reason that I knew we now have a chance to get him back!

Do the right thing Mangini!

If he is healthy, he is better than Pool and Adams combined.

Lawyer Milloy heading to Seattle
Posted by Josh Alper on September 5, 2009 5:38 PM ET
The Seahawks raised some eyebrows with the decision to cut veteran safety Brian Russell on Saturday, but the reason for his departure has become clearer.

Alex Marvez of FoxSports.com is reporting that the Seahawks have signed Lawyer Milloy to take Russell's place. Milloy had 93 tackles and an interception in 15 regular season games for the Falcons in 2008, but they chose not to re-sign him this offseason in an attempt to get younger in the defensive backfield.

Milloy spent three years in Atlanta, and played under current Seahawks coach Jim Mora during his first year with the Falcons. Right now Jordan Babineaux and Deon Grant are set to start at safety for the Seahawks in the season opener, but it may be only a matter of time before Milloy replaces one of them.

This is a brief article about (perhaps) why he was release. In addition to his getting paid like a starter and losing some speed, as previously mentioned.

Is it sad that the most important thing on my mind on a Saturday afternoon is cut-down day in a city half a continent away?

Correct. However that is when they have to notify the league, they don't have to tell the media, although they will, once they get a press release written.

Very true.

I would suspect that by 7pm we would know the full list with an 'official press release', most likely sooner (1830 or so).

I dunno, maybe on the field during an AFC Championship game vs. the Steelers he takes out a 9-inch knife, chases down Big Ben like a wild boar and sticks him a couple of times ala Kaluka Maiava. I mean that'd be real cool but it'd likely get him international fame and rated as a bust... and a 15 yard penalty to boot. Gotta cut down on those penalties.
