In a surprise move, the Patriots have cut cornerback Ras-I Dowling.
Adam Schefter of ESPN was the first to report that the Patriots made the move, and it was confirmed on the league’s transaction wire on Wednesday afternoon.
Heading into the 2011 NFL draft, the Patriots liked Dowling so much that they took him with the first pick in the second round (a pick they had previously acquired in a trade with the Panthers). And Dowling showed early promise, starting the first two games of the season.
But Dowling suffered a hip injury in Week Two of his rookie year and missed the rest of the season, and Dowling’s 2012 season was also cut short because of an injury, this time a torn muscle in his thigh. Through two seasons Dowling has played in only nine games.
Now Dowling is done in New England.
Link
He seems like a talented guy who just can't stay healthy. He might be worth taking a look at because of our lack of depth at the cornerback position.

This is interesting. If Dowling has any shot to help us (is he better than Wade?) we need to get him.
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

Browns awarded rookie LB Eric Martin, waive 2012 7th-round pick Trevin Wade by Mary Kay Cabot, Northeast Ohio Media Group 8/28/2013 5:06 PM Print Email The Browns were awarded rookie linebacker Eric Martin on waivers from New Orleans today and waived cornerback Trevin Wade. Wade, a seventh-round pick last season out of Arizona, suffered a sprained shoulder near the end of camp when he made a diving interception. Martin, a 6-2, 250-pound linebacker out of Nebraska, originally signed with the Saints as an undrafted free agent on April 28. He appeared in all three of the Saints’ preseason contests and recorded one special-teams tackle. He was waived Tuesday. As a first-team All-Big Ten honoree as a senior, Martin led the Cornhuskers with 8.5 sacks. A native of Moreno Valley, Calif., he graduated from Rancho Verde High School. Martin will wear No. 56 and is expected to be available for Thursday’s game web page

is he an OLB? Why are we signing so many LBs?

Are there any cuts of note from other teams? I read rumors that teams are calling us like crazy about our Dlinemen .. we'll see.
SanFord is clearly available for trade lol. I don't want to see Winn, Hughes, Rubin, Taylor or!Bryant even being talked/discussed about being traded/released. I want all them big bodies on the 53 man roster.
I understand the feeling, but I would move any one of them if the deal was right

Let me rephrase my question, which LB spot do we seem to be targetting?
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

Eric Martin - OLB
Now THIS will make Django happy. He was banging the table hard for Martin pre-draft. The Saints board I post on sometimes was really pumped about this kid's performance in camp and preseason. I'm surprised he was cut with the lack of depth and injuries they have at the position. There were some articles about how he was doing very well there.

I don't understand all this hate for Marecic. No doubt he wasn't good, but he is a player at useless position.
I saw a great article on the Browns site about a new breed of FB. That is exactly what I want, a player who can make plays and not just some guy with a picnic ham sized head simply blocking.

I say the same thing. I would never draft a FB. I would line up two runningbacks or simply stick a reserve guard in there to clear a hole.

With TEs converting towards being more like WRs it makes sense to change a FB to a RB. Maybe an Hback, but I like the dual RB option a lot more. Unless we are running an offense based around Jumbo packages I don't see the point in having a true FB.

I agree. It has never made sense to me to turn a weapon in to a fat headed blocker.

"Useless" position or not - when you are put into the game, you have a job todo. Even Pat Shurmur ran plays with a fb. Every team has an I-formation package, a strong L or some type of formation with a fullback.
Sorry but if you can't block someone and your title is "fullback" - you're useless... throw in you can't catch, double useless... just my .02.

I see it this way. You have 5 OL players who don't score points unless it's some fluke.
Me...I would rather have a real weapon on the field teams had to defend over a half assed blocker/runner called a tradtional FB.
Jim Brown was a Fullback. Ernie Green was the halfback.
I want that.

Not arguing one way or another. I would too like to have a versitile FB. Marecic was not. Addition by subtraction in my mind. I did find this... http://m.espn.go.com/general/blogs/blogpost?blogname=nfcnorth&id=49996&src=desktop"Peterson is averaging 7.2 yards per carry this season when he has a lead blocker and 3.3 yards per carry when he does not. He has gained 985 of his 1,286 yards out of the two-back set, including 13 of his 14 runs that have gone for 20-plus yards." So maybe Vikings fans would disagree. Who's the Vikings FB?

No position is useless, Peen.
A good FB is not as important as other positions, but the guy can open holes, pick up blitzes, and catch passes out of the backfield.
They are valuable and Marecic wasn't good at any of those things. It's nothing personal, but he simply wasn't a good player.

I'm kind of bummed about Wade. He's tiny, but I thought he would stick (at least on this CB-needy team). I've also finally watched all the preseason games, and Wade seemed to be making quite a few plays.
Just from a # of bodies standpoint, I'm hoping the FO is looking to make a middle to heavy addition for this position.

I find it both funny and sad that Braylon was cut by the Jets...this guy seemed so promising after his 2007 season, and then everything went to his head and no one wanted anything to do with him.....Now he is looking at being out of the league, all because he is such a head case.....
Its nothing short of amazing. The guy has the talent, no question, but his horrible attitude has taken him right out of the game--and its sad that the guy can't fathom that....
I wish to wash my Irish wristwatch......

I wasn't impressed with Wade at all this preseason. He was out there a lot, but that was about it. He did have a nice INT, but other than that he didn't seem to me to be very effective.
We still have our top 4 plus one of Haden, McFadden, Skrine, Owens, and Bademosi (who can be used in Nickel/Dime defenses) I liked as much of Auguste and Kanneh this preseason as I did of Wade. Given the fact that they are both inexperienced player, they get the nod as far as I'm concerned.

Well with Mingo hurt and the starters not playing in the last preseason game we need some bodies for the position plus it gives the front office the chance to check out some guys for possible depth now or as injury replacements later in the year if they are still available.

Well with Mingo hurt and the starters not playing in the last preseason game we need some bodies for the position plus it gives the front office the chance to check out some guys for possible depth now or as injury replacements later in the year if they are still available.
Plus, we really only have 1 solid backup at ILB in Fort. No one else has really jumped out at me. We get a chance to take a look at some other guys ... and not just for the roster, but for the practice squad, and/or potential injury replacements down the road.

He seems like a talented guy who just can't stay healthy. He might be worth taking a look at because of our lack of depth at the cornerback position.
There were a lot of posters who wanted us to draft him. He is a somewhat bigger CB .... so he might be worth a look. I admit that I do get nervous when Belichick let s a guy go though.

Obviously Lombardi thinks similarly to Belichick, so I doubt he's really an option at this point.

The Browns were awarded rookie linebacker Eric Martin on waivers from New Orleans today and waived cornerback Trevin Wade.
I was really pulling for Trevin, he is a good kid. I for one will miss him in Cleveland, and hope somebody else picks him up (Maybe somebody close to home like Dallas or Houston)

Don't quite understand this move as we are very thin in the secondary and I thought Wade did an decent job. I will be rather upset if they end up releasing this guy next week.
At DT, context and meaning are a scarecrow kicking at moving goalposts.

I would have thought Kent Richardson, and Abdul Kenneh would have at least been cut first.
