I agree that we should trade Gordon if presented with the right offer, but all of those rankings you listed were put together before this season. This season Gordon has 450 yards despite missing two games.
Also, while Cris Carter knows a lot about being an NFL wide receiver. He also had Steve Smith ranked 8th in his overall rankings (ahead of guys like Wes Welker, Victor Cruz) and Andre Johnson). He probably put about 5 minutes of thought into those rankings.
One other thing, when I think of football I think of the Huffington Post.

There is a fairly wide disparity of where Gordon ranks in those reports. I am not saying they are completely accurate. Not at all.
What I am saying is that it is preposterous for anyone to say that Gordon has already achieved "elite" status or to think that anyone who isn't drunk would offer half their draft class for a guy who has failed five drug tests and doesn't have a sustained track record.
Nothing more............nothing less.

You make it sound as though Gordon is a #1. He isn't.
You're insane.
I happen to agree with the frog on this one, at least in part.
Personally, for me, I don't understand this #1, #2 and all that garbage. If the guy can play the position, there is no such thing. It's all silliness in my view.
But, back to my agreeing with the frog. Let's take the designations for what they generally accepted to be. Even accepting those, Gordon wouldn't be a #1 in the sense meant on most every other team.
On the Browns, he might be considered as such, but if you're talking trading him to another team, he probably won't be given such a designation.
Personally, it would depend on who the trade partner was and where their draft position was. It might even include 'a player to be named later' clause with the two teams agreeing to a list of potential players that might make the trade complete or a Browns option for an additional selection and foregoing the 'player to be named'.

He would be the #1 WR for most teams in the league.

Please start the "What if...Trent Richardson was still on the Browns" thread and we can see how far that goes.
But seriously, the 'rumors' (and I don't think they are) have heated up again surrounding Gordon.
I hear the folks on WKRK (at least for a while) talking odds that Gordon is hear next week. Most were saying, IIRC, something like 75% that he's on the Browns and 25% that he's gone. One of them put the odds at 60%-40%.
I actually think that the odds are greater that he gets moved than those that he remains on the Browns. Tossing my estimation into the mix, I would put it at 30% that he stays to 70% against. My reasoning is multi-faceted.
Firstly, he has some talent (although he does drop more balls than he should) and there is a market for receivers right now. His talent is highly regarded (maybe it's a skewed view, but it is there anyway) and some team will be willing to overlook the possibility of a banishment from the league for a year.
Secondly, the new Browns front office has been shown to make bold and often unpopular moves if they think that they get the better end of a deal.
Thirdly, there have been some key injuries to WRs in the league and the value may be going up with multiple teams inquiring about him. If it's true that his value is going up, it increases the chance that the Browns front office will get an offer that they find acceptable.
Lastly, on a two-game skid with Weeden back at the helm, the number of teams that may come calling may increase as the Browns are perceived around the league as not standing much (if any) of a chance in making it to the playoffs and as those same teams try to increase their perceived odds of making the playoffs or if they are leading their division, to keep the advantage, extend the advantage or create an advantage for themselves over other teams.
It seems to be apparent to some teams that the Browns are sellers. And, to improve their teams that they are willing to pay a certain price.

What has he really done in the his career to warrant such praise? How many catches and yards did he have in his last game? How about our first two games of the year? How many years has he consistently put up big numbers? Elite? Half a draft class? Please.
You've got to be fair when looking at the numbers. I really believe you have to consider the QB in a WR's stats. How many young, promising WRs would thrive with the QBs we've been putting out on the field?
We see young receivers get drafted to team with elite QBs and their numbers are awsome in their first season. Who's to say a Gordon wouldn't have done as well playing with one of those guys throwing to him?
Now the 2 missing games is completely valid. And there's the rub.
As you said later in your post, head & heart play a big role as well. But then again, with our QB situation sapping the energy and will from both sides of the ball how much of Gordon's issues can be attributed to that?

I don't think it's a stretch to say we'd all much rather be discussing high-end QB play or playoff scenarios, but that's not exactly in the cards, now is it?

This talk will go down to the wire... LINK Josh Gordon trade “possible” not “probable” Posted by Mike Florio on October 23, 2013, 8:50 AM EDT Amid a report of multiple teams making trade offers for Brown receiver Josh Gordon (which frankly feels like something that was leaked by the Browns in order to drive up interest and/or price), a league source with knowledge of the dynamics of any deal tells PFT that a trade is “possible” but not “probable.” Perhaps the better term would be “complicated.” Apart from Gordon’s actual or perceived football skills, he was suspended for the first two games of the 2013 season, along with a two-game fine. As we understand it, the two-and-two punishment resulted from negotiations between the NFL and the NFLPA. While Gordon has said he realizes he’s on his “last chance opportunity,” it’s not known with certainty whether his next violation of the substance-abuse policy would trigger banishment with the ability to apply for reinstatement after one year. Anyone interested in trading for Gordon would be entitled to get to the truth, which very well could be that Gordon has landed in Stage Three of the substance-abuse program, exposing him to up to 10 random tests per month. If he’s in Stage Three, any violation — from a positive test, failure to show up on time, or diluted sample — will get him suspended for at least a full year. The risk of a one-year suspension makes it much harder to value Gordon, but it also should increase the Browns’ willingness to move him. Team CEO Joe Banner has said that the team has “no intention” of making any further trades and that the Browns aren’t shopping Gordon. Those answers give him the ability to listen to offers and, possibly, to accept the best one. The best approach, as explained during Tuesday’s PFT Live and Tuesday night’s edition of Pro Football Talk on NBCSN, could be to offer a package that will change if Gordon gets suspended at any point before the draft next May. Either way, we’ll know in six days whether the risk of another Gordon suspension will be carried by the Browns, or by someone else.

I think it's funnier that half of the comments are arguing the definition of "#1 WR" and if/when JG became/becomes one.

I think this team would suffer way to much if they traded Josh Gordon. It would move all the WRs up one spot in the depth chart when the team needs to upgrade them where they are now. Many fans want to spend a high draft pick WITH GORDON.
Even if he were ever to get suspended for a year, hes the teams best option. Gordon will stay a Brown.
If the team trades Gordon, they will need to upgrade +2 WRs going into next season. That's not easy, especially for a team that has a history at not bringing in top FAs. Regardless of regime change, that has been a constant. The top named FAs that the Browns have brought in were at the end of their careers. New England had to have a makeover to their WR core but they were set at the other positions. Plus they have a top QB. They have a mid round pick and an UDFA getting significant playing time. The past regimes havnt hit on needs in the draft being able to step in right away. Its hard when you have below average talent across the board. I would like to keep the teams top playmaker in the past 2 years and would not try to replace him in the future, and not give this putrid offense less to work with forcing Bess, Little, and Benjamin into roles they cant succeed in. It would also allow defenses to double Cameron more.

Which is why the Browns have been trying to acquire receivers from other teams' practice squads. First was the guy with a torn ACL, and the latest was the guy we took off the Dolphins practice squad.
That's no accident, nor is it coincidental timing.
It's my opinion the Browns are trying like Hell to trade Gordon. I for one hope they pull it off.
QB's make receivers, not the other way around. If we could unload Gordon and have all kinds of ammunition to remake the roster while also having the ability to acquire a top-line QB we're on our way.
There is no sacrifice too great in order to get a QB, even if that means trading Joe Thomas. I obviously wouldn't want that but that's how important getting a QB is.
People are afraid of "losing" Gordon because of his talent. That fear causes people to ignore his fragile state of position in the league due to his immaturity and desire to party in spite of the fact he was in trouble already.
Having enough talent to be an elite receiver in this league isn't the same as being an elite receiver. If anyone taught Browns fans that it's Leon Edwards.
***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy. Manziel, see Josh Gordon. Dumbass.***

LINK Josh Gordon tired of trade talk Posted by Josh Alper on October 24, 2013, 7:01 AM EDT There’s been trade talk around Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon for a few weeks now and it hasn’t gone ignored by the subject. Gordon said Wednesday that he’s growing weary of discussions about his potential departure from the Browns, saying it would be “naive” to assume that there’s no chance of a deal happening because coach Rob Chudzinski or CEO Joe Banner says that the team isn’t planning to trade Gordon away. “I’m tired of it,” Gordon said, via Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal. “I honestly wish if it was going to happen, I wish it would happen already instead of dragging on. If a trade offer came in and that’s what the Browns want to do, so be it. If not, then let it be known this is where I’m going to be. Honestly, it’s part of the game. I’m dealing with it.” A league source told PFT earlier this week that a Gordon trade is possible rather than probable and they’ve reportedly balked at offers that have already come in from teams interested in Gordon’s services. That doesn’t point toward an imminent deal, although the Browns aren’t going to turn their phones off between now and next Tuesday’s trade deadline. Gordon is going to have to continue dealing with trade talk a little bit longer as a result and the Browns can only hope he deals with it well enough to improve his performance from what went down in Week Seven.

After considering every team’s wide receiver situation, contending status and organizational philosophy, we narrowed the list of possible Gordon landing spots to 13 clubs. Here’s our list, ranked in order from the best fit on down:
1. Colts. G.M. Ryan Grigson traded a 2013 second-round pick for cornerback Vontae Davis and a 2014 first-rounder for running back Trent Richardson, so the high price of acquiring young talent doesn’t scare him or owner Jim Irsay. Also, Grigson and Browns CEO Joe Banner struck the Richardson deal. Finally, the Colts are down a key receiver with Reggie Wayne out for the season with an ACL tear.
2. 49ers. They have an extra pick in the second and third rounds in 2014, and there is a need at wide receiver.
3. Patriots. Gordon would add some field-stretching ability to their offense, and they have been willing to make a big deal over the years. That said, thus far, they have leaned on the receivers they have drafted and developed.
4. Lions. Could you imagine Gordon opposite of Calvin Johnson?
5. Panthers. After a 1-3 start, the Panthers have won two straight. On their best, they look like a playoff contender. Gordon would give them a little more playmaking punch.
6. Redskins. Washington could use another receiving threat, and Gordon was a collegiate teammate of Robert Griffin III.
7. Jets. They are slightly similar to the Panthers; another piece on offense would help, and who’s to say they can’t contend for a playoff spot?
8. Eagles. Gordon would add even more speed to a talented offense.
9. Chargers. The Chargers could use a deep threat.
10. Seahawks. Now we’re getting into real long shot territory. That said, the Seahawks are willing to make a big splash.
11. Chiefs. At 7-0, they probably wouldn’t be inclined to change much.
12. Falcons. Getting Roddy White healthy might be their big move.
13. Packers. They could use a wide receiver, but trades aren’t their thing. They prefer to develop their own talent. With Aaron Rodgers at quarterback, they have that luxury.
So this guy has narrowed it down to every NFL team that is in potential playoff contention that doesn't already have 2 very good WRs... that's awful intuitive journalism right there.

gotta love how they put the Colts on top of the list though.
hey, the Colts already traded for one Browns high draft pick, might as well give them another. but, how crazy would it be if we got less back for Gordon than we did for Richardson (obviously, the suspension issue would be why, but still).

You know Overtoad I am one person who would never underestimate the value of the quarterback position.
The Browns are the poster team to prove the point with 20 guys starting since Couch.
Draft picks are an asset. However, draft prospects are just that: Prospects. You still have to draft the right guys.
The Browns have drafted a string of wide receivers and outside of Gordon have nothing to show for it.
Gordon is 22. He is playing in the NFL. You can see first hand how he matches up against NFL players. Is he a finished product? Not at this point. "If" he is willing to become the best player he can be; he could become a great talent. Only the staff knows his work ethic and commitment. Sometimes young guys have to figure it out. Sometimes mentors show them the way. Cris Carter's road to the HOF did not start off well either. =================================================
"QB's make receivers, not the other way around." ====================================
Receivers get open and catch the ball. They also score touchdowns. They are skill position players. Number one receivers beat single coverage. If they are game planned against they draw double coverage.
You have to have a franchise quarterback to compete consistently there is no argument about that.
At the same time I don't think it wise to trade young talent.
The Browns now have 2 first round picks plus additional picks. They will have the flexibility to move and get a QB. That quarterback will need talent around him in order to succeed. They will already have to draft a RB and even with Gordon another receiver.
We can not tell what the draft order will be or who will be open to trade. The draft provides no guarantees. Alex Smith at number one or Aaron Rodgers at 24?
Unless Gordon is mentally a loss cause I am not sure I see the wisdom in trading a 22 year old with his potential. You develop him and build your team.

We own their 1st and 4th rounders.
Maybe if they trade us their 2nd, 3rd, and 5th picks too .......

He signed the biggest ever NFL contract in 1999. (as of 1999)
The "2nd" part of that deal included a $8 million bonus and a $6 million salary. (in the year 2003 alone) I would guess that he can afford anything he wants.

A million bucks doesn't go as far as it used to Everything depends on if he stacked his cash away and invested well. If he did, yeah, he should be financially fine. Remember, Bernie Kosar was, at one time, considered a pretty savvy business man.. he's not busted today, but he's living on a lot less they he expected too..

Yeah, but what did Kosar make? I think that his 1st contract was $5 million or so back in 1985.
Couch made $48 million or so.
There's a difference in time and such, but that's still a huge difference in dollars. I don't think that we had 1000% inflation between 1985 and 1999.
I would think that it's easy to blow through money ..... but Couch still should have retired with quite a lot of money. Plus, he married well. I bet that Heather Kozar has been able to make a fair amount of money from appearance fees and such as well.

IMO, the trade talk has been made up by the media. I'm sure teams have called, that happens to every team from time to time, but this FO has made it clear that they are not trading him. They have gone out of their way to make that point to the press, yet, guys like LaCanfora can't help to act as if they know everything. It keeps people watching, so I guess it helps their bottom line. But with todays so called journalism, rumors and speculation are reported as being inside information.
IMO, uless afirst round pick is offered, I say they never trade him. For God's sake, he could be a superstar if he develops with the right QB.

They've got nothing to lose for posting this crap. Sensational headlines make people read, and no one's held accountable when it's proven to be a batch of BS.

First, times were different, Kosar played longer than Couch, Kosar made tons of money before the year 2000, Kosar had a job with a company in Miami that paid him 500k a year plus bonuses, Kosar built a very large portfolio of real estate in Florida, Kosar had a string of Burger King franchises down south.
Kosar lost his money over 3 things, his divorce, his manager/agent pilfering from him and a rough real estate market in Florida that damn near ruined every investor in Florida.
I am not sure, but I think Kosar made about 20 to 25 million during his playing career. Probably another 5 or so milion after. I don't know what that is when adjusted for inflation.

I’m dealing with it.”
Gordon don't feed the BOZOS! hang in there. You are just print for them making their job easier as they got to write something.

A million bucks doesn't go as far as it used to
You know, that reminds me of a comment I'd heard often as a child. Someone would need a ride from out in the country where we lived into the nearest town, Austintown, which was 5 miles east of us. I remember them saying to my dad, "I'll give you a buck for gas." I was probably 8 years old so never gave it any thought other than that I still remember the comment.
I just bought gas today for $3.19. That dollar would buy a third of a gallon of gas today. In my car that would be about 6 or 7 miles. I just looked it up, in 1960 gas was 31¢ a gallon. So back then it would have been 3-1/4 gallons. In my car that would be over 65 miles. So I guess a 10 mile trip would have been well worth it.
Just goes to show ya, a million bucks doesn't go as far as it used to.
Regarding Gordon, I want to keep him. Dude has mad skills and he's in his 2nd year in his second offense and second everything else except for his inept QB who ain't teaching him much. I'll take my chances on his not getting suspended.
We've drafted so many WRs since our return and none of them has been worth a crap except maybe KJ and he did have a half decent QB but the team had nothing else. Absolutely nothing else.
I've watched Ozzie Newsome draft WR after WR and all for naught. Look how many years the Rats went after WRs. Who's to say our current FO will be any better judging WR talent than Ozzie?
No, I'll keep what we got in Gordon and hope he works out. I realize he's got red flags all over him but he's also got the skills to do well . I'm banking on that rather than dumping him off on someone else which just might give him a wake-up call and go on to become elite with them.
I'm wondering how much these trade rumors are an inside job meant to be a wake-up call. Banner is one to put pressure on everyone and in any way he can. This would be good pressure on Gordon as we see it's already getting under his skin.
I've had as much faith in other, less talented, players before. This one might actually work.

I doubt it is the FO. Why would they want to play head games with one of their best players? Motivation is one thing, psychological torment is another.
This kid already has a ton of crap tugging on his mind. Anybody who would add more stress to his life intentionally is just plain F'd up. Does anybody really believe they would do this type thing to a young athlete who is struggling with personal problems already? To play that kind of head game with a kid with Gordon's backround would just be demented IMO.
In no way would this be an incentive for better play, if anything, it could guarantee to cause a distraction effecting his play even at practice.
