You're worried about a 35-year old WR (34 now, but 35 when the season starts)? He averaged 4 catches and 45 yards per game last year. And only had 4 TDs. Let the Ravens pay for his "leadership". I doubt he reaches 65 catches again.

I am in Charlotte - watched a handful of games. Went to one game. I love Steve Smith's desire to win - his speed and ability to be a game changer - long gone. . . he's actually got the ability to cause issues if Flacco plays as poor as he did this year.
The more things change the more they stay the same.

I agree.
Tate shows he can break the LOS at a good rate. Sure, he doesn't have break away speed. He gets to the 2nd level then rumbles 15-25 yards before people bring him down. He has a nice YPC average.
I guess my question is , what's wrong with that?
Also, someone said he avoids contact. I agree. He knows when the play is over just as Franco Harris did. I like it. The energy spent trying to gain that last yard or two aren't generally worth the toll it takes that adds up in a game/season, and IMO the vast majority of fumbles occur when the back is trying to gain the last few yards.
I have no problem with a back stepping out of bounds or laying down when the play is all but over.
Sure....game on the line, you need the last few inches for first down, you bust butt...otherwise, it's smart football. Live to play another play.
Think in terms of QB....sometimes it is simply best to toss it away. For backs, sometimes it is simply best to step aside.

More than enough time has passed to expect a deal to be hammered out and announced.
My best guess would be that one of two things are happening -
A) We're not offering Tate what he'd expected, and his camp is about to shop around
B) We've got a principal agreement that's incentive laden, with complicated contract details.
I'm hoping B. The smartest thing for us to do would be to sign Tate to a contract that's modest at it's base, but lucrative if Tate reaches certain achievements.
A healthy signing bonus with a low base salary that will escalate if certain goals are reached.

Browns turn attention to RB Ben Tate March, 14, 2014 By Pat McManamon | ESPN.com The Cleveland Browns are getting a little more serious about free agency. Really serious. The team confirmed several reports Thursday night that running back Ben Tate was in town to visit with the team and would be in the team’s facility on Friday. Tate wants to be a feature back; the Browns lack one. Tate has been considered one of the best fits on the market for the Browns; he averaged 4.7 yards per carry in his career. Tate is a big back with ability and for a couple years he and Arian Foster formed one of the best tandems in the league in Houston. But Foster was the No. 1 guy, and Tate wants to be. The Browns can give him that opportunity, but of course any contract signing comes down to money. As highly regarded as Tate is, ESPN’s Bill Polian gave him a C grade on his free-agent tracking chart, same as he gave Peyton Hillis. Polian calls Tate a “confrontational runner” with a physical style that can lead to injury. He has never played a full, 16-game season, missing time to ankle, hamstring, foot and rib injuries. “He is a little bit of a teaser because you are always looking for him to have a breakout year but he never quite lives up to his potential,” Polian opined. Earlier in the day the Browns signed tight end Jim Dray, whose reputation is as a blocking tight end. He showed pass-catching ability, but Dray played last season in Arizona, where coach Bruce Arians makes no secret he wants his tight ends to be blockers first. That could mesh well with Jordan Cameron, who is more of a receiver first -- though Cameron did work on and improve his blocking as last season progressed. The Browns also signed Cincinnati receiver Andrew Hawkins to an offer sheet, and the Bengals are not expected to match. If all goes well, the Browns could conceivably add a starting linebacker and safety, a backup cornerback, a backup tight end, a slot receiver with speed and a starting running back in the first week of free agency. Given the fact that you overpay for free agents, and we should be able to find a couple good guys in the draft, I'm not going to hang my hopes on getting Tate.
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

Despite last years atrocity I still believe running back is the easiest position to replace in the draft or with UDFAs. I think we are fine with Lewis and Baker. If we really want a thumper we could draft one late. I wouldn't object to signing Tate unless the money is absurd, but in the end I don't think we'll see a difference in production between him and Lewis.

j/c: So we completely ignored the offensive line in FA and want to bring in Tate?  I saw the sarcasm and the piling in response to my earlier post, but I will stick by my guns. We needed a RG. We could have used a RT. We chose to ignore some good players who really could have helped us. We then overpaid for a WR who has accomplished very little. Now, we are pursuing a RB who has been prone to injury and is seeking a big pay day. Making matters worse is that RB is the easiest position to fill. There are all kinds of RBs available in the draft that can help us. You combine one of those guys w/Lewis and Baker and you have something. Go ahead and laugh at me now. We'll see if you are still laughing next fall or if you are complaining about how Tate was a waste of money and that our OL can't open up holes in the running game. It's not like we have never heard that argument before.

there is no reason that can not sign Tate AND address the OL And the 2nd CB.
Just like the last regime they have chosen to keep their hands ( and money) in their pockets and ignore some those two glaring needs, I do not understand it... again.

You can, however we know for a fact that RB is the easiest position to step in and play effectively right away. It doesn't matter what the system is or what the playbook calls for. You can either play or not.
Playing guard is more complicated. I almost hate saying it because I was a RB, but moving from level to the next is not as difficult as it is if you play other positions.
Additionally, we could have signed a guy Asamoah or Schwartz for considerably less money than what Tate will get.
And who do you think will last longer in the NFL: Tate or one of those guards?
I just don't see the value and sense of these moves.
Oh, and I am not saying you should agree w/me. My response was directed towards those who used sarcasm to try and make me look stupid and to Da Mans Hot---who thought it was hysterical.

Yes, I was, and you can make the argument we he will improve even more this year, but I still think he is better served in the slot and would like to see an upgrade. At the very least I can live with him at #2 but we still need a legit #3 .
Given the way offenses are changing 2 cb's is not enough, getting to the point where you almost need four.
And yes I agree with you on RG, I have disappointed it has not been addressed.

Any thoughts on Davin Joseph? He's 30, a two-time Pro Bowler, and (I think) plays RG. Had a bad knee injury in 2012, but returned to start all 16 games in 2013. He's still available. I don't know if he fits Shanahan's OL scheme, though.

You're really gonna be pissed when we sign Tate (CLOSE to it--Today) and take Watkins at 4 with Carr or Garoppllo at 26 and a Corner at 35.
OPEN your damn eyes man. Pettine and O'Neil want size and press coverage talent at Corner. That IS NOT Skrine.
Further. The OG's available in round 3 are every bit as good as anything we would OVERPAY in this junk FA.
You're gonna bitch about Tate signing. Fine. But before you say a word about taking Watkins at 4, think about what those 2 moves do. This offense goes to another level. No more crowded LOS. Even with Hoyer under Center (FOR NOW).
HOW can you bitch when we addressed our biggest defensive problem. ILB and the Secondary. The final piece could very well be a solid press corner at 35. And move Skrine to the slot.

Those moves would be a disaster. It would be a repeat of our own tragic history and would set us back even further. It's amazing how many times this franchise repeats the same mistakes over and over and over again.
