I should add to my previous comments that my position as of a few weeks ago was mainly informed by Pettine himself. When asked about the Manziel situations, he said that he wasn't concerned about any of it because it wasn't affecting his work. Now I'm conflicted. Is Pettine wrong? Shouldn't he know better than anyone what is appropriate for his players? Does this put him at odds with Haslam? I haven't heard anything about this from Pettine since minicamp ended, so if I'm missing more recent statements by him, let me know.

I don't believe it would be professional of Pettine to call him out in public that way. Putting things like that out there in the press wouldn't be the right way to handle it even if he did think it was a problem IMO

Which is kind of the point to this all IMO....

People can pick and choose what they want out there if they wish and there's a right and wrong way to handle things.

Absolutely not.

I can't speak to how he's handling it internally, but that's exactly how you should play it to the public.

Old people are so mad right now. I think Haslam put it exactly how it should be, just be more saavy about what's going up on social media.

I don't see it as a generational rift type deal at all. I'm fairly young and I'm quite concerned about the guy's idiocy.

I think many are quick to paint it as 'haters don't like him partying' because they've got their homer lenses on.

But I do agree that winning cures all.

More importantly.... anybody have any word on Justin Gilbert getting signed?

Pretty much the entire rest of the league is under contract at this point, and his slot is pretty well defined... what's the hold up????

Johnny Manziel 'absolutely' expects to win Browns starting job - CBSSports.com
http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/eye-on-foot...ns-starting-job

Basically everything surrounding Johnny Manziel's offseason involved his offseason antics. And most of that everything's been about everyone else debating Manziel. But while we're busy talking about Johnny Football off the field, he's still worried about what happens on the field.

And he "absolutely" expects to win the starting Browns job.

"Absolutely," Manziel said when asked about starting Week 1.

What else could he say? If you make it to the NFL level as a quarterback, you've got some confidence in your ability. And not using the confidence from your success would be a major mistake and/or ridiculous.

"I want to play. That's what anybody wants to do. Anybody that's been a starter in the past, and been playing, they want to play," he said. "To say I don't want to be the starter, that would be ridiculous.

"I absolutely want to start, that's my goal. Hopefully I can achieve that."

There's a good chance Manziel can win the starting job. His only obstacle is Brian Hoyer; despite playing extremely well at the start of 2013 (before an ACL injury) it's not like we're talking about a superstar ahead of him on the depth chart.

But there's also the matter of being prepared to play at the NFL level. The game speeds up immensely from college to the pros and the transition is never easy.

Jordan Cameron (reportedly "impossible to cover" during early offseason sessions) is a nice weapon at tight end, but assuming Josh Gordon misses time this is a weakened group of skill-position weapons. (No offense to Andrew Hawkins. Or Nate Burleson.)

If Manziel wins the gig he'll be short-changed by the lack of weapons. But maybe he won't have to worry about his bossman wanting him to "tone it down" if he's good enough to land the starting gig.

Hell as an old, old, guy myself I am not mad at Johnny. I just think he needs to stop acting like an ass sometimes. Now granted I acted that way at his age, and I still do most of the time lol, BUT I am not in line to make millions of dollars a year. If anybody wants to offer me millions I will stop drinking, stop farting, and act anyway my boss wants me too until I can afford to retire.

I'm an old guy and I'm not mad at him either. I do wish he'd tone down the public antics a little or at least, when he's with a bunch of friends, take all cell phones and cameras away from them LOL

I think he's doing most things other high profile young athletes do. But he's in the news and I think he just needs to be a little more aware of his surroundings.

This is off season Manziel..He did the same thing at A & M...As soon as the season rolled around, he was all business. We only have 3 more weeks of the Manziel party machine, then he will be in workman mode and all of this goes away. He is a competitor first. That drive will define him, not the swan.

Am I the only one in the world who got a kick out the swan picture? That's the least of my worries with him.

I don't think I'd be letting people know I was hanging with Beiber. That's 50 demerits right there.

I can put up with Manziel partying with his buddies/Gronk/inflatable swans/numerous hot females, but partying with Bieber (known codeine user) and Floyd Mayweather (convicted woman beater) is going too far. Reign it in Johnny, reign it in.

The biggest head-scratcher in this article for me is what the heck is Floyd Mayweather (almost 40 yrs old) doing hanging out with 19 and 20 yr old dudes?

Ya know, I was thinking the exact same thing initially. I'm almost 30 years old and I couldn't imagine hanging out with Justin Bieber. Even without alcohol, I think I'd eventually end up hurting that little punk!

If Manziel's similarity with these two extends to their professional achievements, I'll take it. Particularly Mayweather, hate him or love him, he competes and he wins. Give me some of that in my QB.

I pretty much got you when you made the post. My point is that the so called "d-bag" portions of a person's make up are unlikely to be carved out from the portions we find admirable or desirable. Of course a person can grow and change but it will be by his own volition and at his own pace.

I agree.

I'd take Big Ben tomorrow if it meant we would win.

Just don't see it with Manziel, though. I expect the guy to flame out. Still clinging to the irrational hope that the magic continues, though.

This is the part that's hard for me to reconcile. I'm not sure so I'll ask you. Is it his physical talents that you don't see translating to the NFL game? Or, is it his perceived character flaws that will prevent him from reaching his full potential?

Physical and mental.

Undersized guy with a low intellect who has never even had a playbook at a serious level and who needs to unlearn most of what he knows about the game...

You want to bet on that?

...and doesn't appear to take any of his new job (except the paychecks) seriously.

By all outward appearances, he has bust written all over him. Always has. He's one heck of a talented athlete, but he appears to lack it between the ears and in maturity.

Time will tell.

You do realize that as a redshirt freshman he was learning the WCO. you keep saying low intellect and yet he had the highest wonderlick out of all the draftable qbs. He was the most exciting player in college football since probably Hershell Walker but yea he should forget everything he learned and do something else lol.
