Brian Hartline is a good pickup. He is a lot like Joe Jurivicious. He will be an asset to this team no doubt.

Yeah, if you have a WR corps who can consistently be where they are supposed to be, and catch the ball when it comes their way, you will be at least as successful as if you have some incredible WR. Man, we had Gordon for 10 games in 2o013, and he put up one of, if not the best 14 game season by a WR ever. How did that work out for us? Look at many of the great WRs in the league who have languished on horrible to bad teams for large parts of their careers. Give me 3-4 really good WR, as opposed to 1 truly great WR, and I will be perfectly happy. I think that we have 3 really good WR right now in Hartline, Hawkins, and Gabriel. I think that we'll draft a guy in the 2nd/3rd round, and put him to work as well. Man, it would also be nice if we could get lucky with the UDFA, Rod Smith, like the Broncos did with a guy like their Rod Smith. (who led the Broncos in receiving for something like 8 years in a row) Seriously, though, the team kept both Rodney Smith at WR, and Winston at RB on the main roster all of last year.Neither guy saw much action, but maybe they think that they can be developed.

Let's look at what the Browns do. Yes, we changed OC's, but every indication is that we will still be a run heavy team. What this team did was run for TD's. Not a single WR had more than 3 receiving TD's. While that number may be higher this year, I believe the M.O. will be the same. Move the chains, get close and run the ball in.
Where we have a serious need was in size. At 6'2" and 200lbs. he has the size we need. He is a sure handed WR that can move the chains. He's a very physical WR. He's a slightly younger and healthier version of Miles Austin.
While people complain that he's not a #1 WR, his contract doesn't read like a #1 WR. That's not what he was signed to do. He was signed to be a replacement for Miles Austin and his contract numbers indicate just that.
It's an improvement. It's an upgrade. A solid WR at a reasonable cost that brings size to the WR core. When looking at it for what it really is, I like the signing.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Not meaning this as a shot but Gabriel has double didgit tds if the QB had hit him when he was open by 5 plus yards. He had several opportunities in the redzone that was thrown for Manute Bol and had twice as many deep balls squandered here he had his man beaten by 10 plus.
I believe this kid is gonna stud out.

It doesn't look like he will make a whole lot of big plays downfield. But seems to have a nose for the chains. That's something Cleveland doesn't EVER seem to have.
Could it mean no more two yard outs on 3rd and 6.

I'm really going to miss that strong armed QB with all of that deep accuracy.

Is Shorts a potential #1 WR? No. Absolutely not. Having expectations of Shorts to put up the production of a #1 is setting yourself for disappointment. Shorts can be a nice complimentary WR. He really is. He'd be the best WR on the team and top target for whoever is at QB. Is he elite like Dez Bryant or AJ Green? No. But, is he good enough to be the top target on a team and be very productive? Yes. A #1 WR doesn't necessarily mean an elite one. There are only a few of those. If you just want to call him a #1 for the sake that someone has to have the title on the team, go ahead and call him a #1. Shorts is a nice complimentary WR to have. If given the option, I'd take Hartline over Shorts. Correct you don't need a Calvin Johnson, Dez Bryant etc., and that was not my point.Let me put it this way, if it were up to me and we do sign Shorts, it in no way would stop me from drafting a WR in the first this year. For example, had we signed Maclin or Cobb and signed Hartline, I could understand not drafting a WR in the first. Too often, it seems we try to view a FA for us as a #1 when really he's a 2 or a #2 that's really a #3 etc. regardless of position.

YES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He's a younger, faster version of what Miles Austin was for us, just Hartline will receive more reps on the earlier downs. It's a very solid signing in my book.

I read somewhere on Twitter last night: LeBron and Hartline prove... You can take the kid out of NE Ohio, but Miami doesn't have Swensons.

This doesn't have to do with the signing, but remembered reading this story a couple years ago about Hartline. Besides his talent , this is just another reason I (and sure most of you) wanted to sign him. Just an overall hard worker. Maybe he can give Gordon a job ---------------------------- Brian Hartline will begin celebrating his new multimillion dollar contract, just after he takes care of this drive-thru order. Philly.com's Justin Klugh noticed a very peculiar moment during the Miami Dolphins receiver's Wednesday interview with Dan LeBatard. The two chatted about the recent contract Hartline signed with the Dolphins that ESPN reported was for five years and worth nearly $31 million. It's a huge chunk of change and deserved some attention. We sift through all the "what's it like to get that kind of contract?" talk and concentrate on the section of the conversation that centers on the offseason. You can hear the segment at Philly.com, which features LeBatard launching into a discussion on what the team was doing this offseason. Well, the 26-year-old has no idea about the transactions, because he has been working. Brian Hartline: Today I'm kinda busy. I'm working at a drive thru up in Ohio, freezing my butt off. Dan LeBatard: You're working in a drive thru? BH: Yeah, you know, a drive thru convenience store? DL: Yeah. BH: That's where I work. Of course, the sensible retort to that comment would be to tell Hartline that he works in the NFL, and for a ridiculous amount of money. So, you take that butt you are freezing off and get back to what we like to assume is a lavish mansion. According to the report, Hartline got into the convenience store business back in January with his pal Jesse, who has been running stores like this since he was 15. Hartline's drive thrus

I don't think anyone thinks Hartline will be our #1 WR, more of a #2 WR which he has been able to play decently well. Well then who IS goiung to be our number 1? Miles Austin? Andrew Hawkins?

Can't believe I am saying that after years of preaching we should not draft another WR high, but the game has changed and we don't have anything close to a true #1.
Fortunately for us, this appears to be a good year for WRs in an otherwise weak draft.

I like the Hartline signing, but I wonder if it closes the book on Miles Austin returning. I suppose it does, although I'd still like to see him re-signed. He was clutch last year before getting hurt, with 47 catches, 34 being for first downs and 2 TDs. It was easy to see why he became Hoyer's go-to guy when things were going good.

I can't believe or well i guess I can because it's loserville that our best FA signing is gonna be Brian Hartline. Wow they were right about not being big spenders. What a freaking joke!!!!!!!!!! I feel bad for the season ticket holders next year watching this joke of a franchise get slaughtered!

But most here see position WR we got to get one. We all know how it works - they have a few they will take in each round but they have to be there.
The guy that intrigues me the most cause he will be there is the Beckham drug guy but only if he didn't test positive coming into the combine. That kid has game. I know you won't endorse him but not everyone remains stupid talking about the pot smokers. jmho

Wow! Either there's now ice water in hell or the internet has broken. lol I believe it's that whole "Net Neutrality" thing. Actually I wanted Jordon Matthews in the second round last year. I thought and still think he was a steal there. That's really the first time that I advocated a WR that high in the draft. I don't really have a clue about the WR's in this draft except for White who I believe is great.

What's scary is Hartline was #150 in the NFL towards the end of the year in YAC...the Dolphins 3rd down back Daniel Thomas (whom was cut in the off season and then resigned after Moreno got hurt) was ranked higher than Hartline... And he was active only 4 games... We need a lot more help than just Hartline...I hope this offense isn't reverting backwards

Look at how the Dolphins receivers performed last year though, compared to ours.
Their top receiver, in yards/catch was a kid who had 1 catch for 14 yards.
Hartline averaged 12.2 yards/catch on 39 catches.
Mike Wallace averaged 12.9 yards/catch on 57 catches.
Jarvis Landry averaged 9.0 yards/catch on 84 catches.
TE Charles Clay averaged 10.4 yards/catch on 58 catches.
Not one of their receivers did well in yards/catch. They did OK, but it sure seems as though they were tackled rather quickly after making the catch.
Comparing their receivers to ours last year:
Gabriel averaged 17.4 yards/catch on 36 catches.
Benjamin averaged 17.4 yards/catch on 18 catches.
Cameron averaged 17.7 yards/catch on 24 catches.
Hawkins averaged 13.1 yards/catch on 63 catches.
Austin averaged 12.1 yards/catch on 47 catches.
Perhaps scheme and QB had something to do with the receivers.

Hoyer averaged almost a yard more per attempt than Tannehill and more than three yards per completion. Someone else can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that the Dolphins employed more of a spread, quick passing attack. This would limit a receiver's ability to catch passes for great yardage. Tannehill's Air Yards Per Attempt was towards the bottom of the league, which means most of his passes were short passes.

Scheme AND QUARTERBACK?????
Do you think Hoyer is a better qb than Tannehill? In think that Hoyer threw down the field more than Tannehill did. Tannehill threw a ton of really short passes, where Hoyer had more passes, even in fewer attempts, in the intermediate to deeper throws.(as far as throws in the air) As to who was better last year, that I'll leave to the experts.

Tannehill is my guy but man he is the worst deep ball passer in the league. Few college Qbs throw a decent deep ball coming out of college anymore. I think Manziel is probably the best deep ball thrower to come out since Rogers and Manziel's deep ball was certainly nothing to write home about. It is just none of these guys throw a good deep ball anymore. It has become a lost art.
its not pimping manziel on a scale of one to ten his deep ball is probably a 4 or 5 at best. Teddy and carr would have been a 2 or 3 tops and both were much better than guys like Luck when he came out.
