Yes Hardaway should stay clear from gay people. He pretty much stated that he would.

No Hardaway isnt a victim. But he shouldnt have lost his job endorsing the All Star game for the NBA because of those remarks. All because the NBA dont want to receive all this mail from the gay groups. I think Hardaways statements make him look like an ignorant jackass. It wasnt that long ago when people thought African Americans shouldnt be in professional sports or in this country for that matter.

If a white person made these statements, the backlash would be way worse. Not only would the gays be calling for his head, so would any minority group. Its almost like one minority group can make fun of another.

I really don't see a big deal in what the guy said. He stated his beliefs. If thats what he believes, then that is cool. I don't see why it is necessary to target him in the media.

A lot of sports players have some crazy opinions, and many of them are out spoken about them. Not a big deal.

Its his right to say what he think, its others rights to say what they think.

And that is fine.

Dude doesn't like gays---big deal.

The guy plays with a ball for a living , why should anyone give a ratt's ass what this moron thinks ?

Is Hardaway still in the league? Don't you think he should be a "little uncomfortable" with his last name "Hard-away" than worry about someone's gender preference....

2119,The only dudes I know that roll their eyes are gay.Whats funny is that they usually get them smacked right back to where they belong.

Tyler, thats pretty much what Im trying to say. I dont agree with what he said but who cares. It was ignorant because like I said earlier, it wasnt long ago when people thought blacks shouldnt play in professional sports. Now there is a black guy complaining about gays.

Im kind of jumping back and forth because people make too big of a deal if someone doesnt like them. But when did we not have the right to not like people?

Actually, they are one and the same, so I was repeatitive.

If you heal from a mental wound, you're also moving beyond it and getting on with life. I've had to do this a few times in my life.

Wow ... amazing. this is a very thorny subject and I am surprised at some of the reponses. I really thought we'd all be past this type of thinking by now.

I wonder if some of you all would have the same mindset if it had been a white businessman in Mississippi saying things like that about African-Americans?

Prejudice is prejudice in whatever form it takes. One certainly can disagree with another persons ideas, lifestyle, religion, etc but we each have a right to them as we see fit. Coming out in the media and saying "I hate" and "they shouldn't exist in the world or the United States" sets our whole society back 200 years. That position cannot be defended by bringing the "freedom of speech" arguement.

I'm not defending his stance. I'm defending him being able to say what he wants.

If the guy believes that ish, then fine. If the KKK believes that all minorities are inferior, then fine. People on this board think I'm FOS, fine.

People are entitled to believe whatever they believe, regardless of how backwards their ideology is.

I'm not taking any sides on the issue. I'm simply saying, "Hey, it's one guys opinion, and that guy is Tim Hardaway--big deal."

Because somebody states how they feel, whether we agree with it or not, "sets our society back 200 years?"????

Oh, the drama.

The guy spoke, big deal - if what he said put you back 200 years, then you have pretty thin skin.

Yeah, he's getting press cause he's a "used to be", big deal. Do you let others statements affect you so much that it puts you back 200 years?

I would hope so. Since I've not seen one person AGREE with what he said... the debate seems to be about his right to say it, and others right to criticize him for saying it.... and free speech is free speech whether you're talking about blacks, gays, or pygmies... or at least it's supposed to be.

It has to be defended by bringing the "freedom of speech" argument otherwise we don't have "freedom of speech"...

Your assertion that he shouldn't be allowed to say it because the notion seems out of date, is about as anti-freedom of speech as any argument that I've seen.

Probably premeditated q and a that would get his name back in the media, while still keeping the lame Amaechi story running. So tommorows news will be the players running to Amaechis rescue and condemning hardaway...it'll just keep going til people just

Pretty much the same thing I said in the beginning.

His freedom of speech gives him the right to say it,but it would still be an ignorant thing to say.

Retired NBA star Hardaway says he hates 'gay people'ESPN.com news services

Former Miami Heat guard Tim Hardaway said on a radio show Wednesday afternoon that he would not want a gay player on his team.

Hardaway
"You know, I hate gay people, so I let it be known," Hardaway said. "I don't like gay people and I don't like to be around gay people. I am homophobic. I don't like it. It shouldn't be in the world or in the United States."

Hardaway was a guest of Miami Herald columnist Dan Le Batard on Miami sports radio station WAXY-AM and was asked how he would deal with a gay teammate. When asked if he would accept an active player's coming out, such as that of retired NBA center John Amaechi, Hardaway replied: "First of all, I wouldn't want him on my team.

"And second of all, if he was on my team, I would, you know, really distance myself from him because, uh, I don't think that's right. And you know I don't think he should be in the locker room while we're in the locker room. I wouldn't even be a part of that," he said. John Amaechi on the radio

• On ESPN Radio's The Pulse: Dan Le Batard recounts his reaction to Hardaway's comments. Listen

NBA Commissioner David Stern, upon learning of the remarks Wednesday, banished Hardaway from All-Star weekend in Las Vegas. "It is inappropriate for him to be representing us given the disparity between his views and ours," Stern said in a statement Thursday.

Hardaway, who played in five All-Star games during the 1990s, was already in Las Vegas and scheduled to make a series of public appearances this week on behalf of the league. He had attended an NBA Cares event at a Las Vegas YMCA with Knicks forward Jerome Williams on Tuesday. Le Batard, who also writes for ESPN The Magazine, quoted Amaechi in a Miami Herald column saying the ex-NBA player was grateful for Hardaway's words.

"Finally, someone who is honest. It is ridiculous, absurd, petty, bigoted and shows a lack of empathy that is gargantuan and unfathomable. But it is honest. And it illustrates the problem better than any of the fuzzy language other people have used so far."

Thursday morning, on ESPN Radio's Mike & Mike in the Morning, Amaechi said although the reaction to his coming out has been "overwhelmingly positive," Hardaway's comments seemed to trigger similar statements from others.

"Every comment that [Hardaway] made is labeled with hate," Amaechi said. "The percentage of e-mails I've received overnight that are going to have to go into a little box somewhere just in case I end up dead are unbelievable. He's been a lightning rod for people to finally open the floodgates and decide that they can say some pretty awful stuff."

"I will say this about the Tim Hardaway comments and the comments of people like him ... these are the loud comments that pollute the air," Amaechi said. "These are the comments that create the atmosphere that allow some of the tragic incidents of homophobia that we've seen. This is what makes the lives of gay and lesbian young people in schools miserable. It's what stops gay and lesbian people in the workplace from coming out as well as the fact they can be fined in 33 states for being gay. These are part of the problem."

Hardaway, later saying he regretted the remarks, apologized for the remarks during a telephone interview with Fox affiliate WSVN-TV in Miami.

"Yes, I regret it. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said I hate gay people or anything like that," he said. "That was my mistake."

Hardaway played for five NBA teams from 1990-2003 and was a five-time All-Star. He finished with averages of 17.7 points and 8.2 assists.

On Mike & Mike on Thursday morning, Amaechi also said he was heartened by the NBA's response to Hardaway's comments.

"I think Commissioner Stern is absolutely right. ... I've been in contact with the NBA offices and it is not the views of the NBA as an organization," he said. "I don't think that people give NBA players enough credit ... some of them definitely don't agree with those views"

LOL.. you know what gets me Jules? People don't seem to really get it.

When did Tim Hardaway retire?
Answer: He hasn't played in the NBA since 2003.

What is Hardaway doing now?
Answer: He's the former coach of a failed ABA team and co-owner of a hand carwash.

Why exactly was he on a sports radio show?
Answer: To discuss his carwash business? uh, no. Because they had to KNOW HE WOULD SAY SOMETHING STUPID.... That is the only LOGICAL reason I can come up with why anybody would CARE what Tim Hardaway thinks of this.... Because they were aware of his anti-gay feelings and sought him out to get the exact type of quotes they got....

Amen. I thought the same exact thing. The media was looking for something like this.

I applaud him for speaking his mind. Now people think he's an ass for saying what he had said.

I'm mad at Hardaway for reversing his position.

He hates gays. So what?

I hate ignorant people.

I hear ya.... when this was first posted, I was about to give the guy props for at least having the cajones to be bluntly honest about his feelings.... then he rolls over like every other bobblehead in the media and apologizes.

I guess if there is a technicality in it, he apologized for saying it, not for what he said if you pay attention to the wording.

I dont think that is a fair statement. You are implying that anybody that thinks he has the right to say that he hates gays hates gays themselves and I just dont think that is true. I dont hate gays but if Tim Hardaway wants to hate gays and sau he hates gays then what do I care?? Hes entitled to his opinion as long as he isnt doing anything to harm gays.

I do think it is kind of funny though. I bet if someone came along and said " I hate black people" Tim Hardaway would be pretty pissed.

Wow, this thread has taken so many turns and twists. First, like everyone said, Hardaway has a right to say and feel what he wants. I really hope that Hardaway used the wrong choice of words and was referring to the lifestyle (for lack of a better word) rather than the actual people. I don't know. Maybe that's why he apologized. What he needs to realize is that just because you don't agree with what someone else is doing doesn't mean you should hate that person. I disagree with many people about things they do, as I'm sure they do me. As Guiliani (spelling?) said, you aren't going to agree on everything and that's okay.

Ammo mentioned something that has gotten lost in this and that someone else really dismissed that I'd like to bring back up. There is one legitimate point that Hardaway tried to make, I think. That's the matter of being in the locker room together. Brownsbomber or someone mentioned that if Hardaway wasn't comfortable showering with a gay person he shouldn't be playing basketball?!?! I don't understand that logic and I understand that one point Hardaway was trying to make. I find it no different than at the school I coach where there is a female wrestler. Should she share a lockerroom with the male wrestlers? The point I'm trying to make is that there is a tough situation (just as we discussed about gays in the military). I don't know the answer, but I really feel it isn't what the other poster alluded to that it's no big deal and that they are professionals. I'm not saying that a gay person shouldn't be allowed to play sports or anything like that. I'm just saying there must be a situation where all feel comfortable with this one aspect and really wanting to throw it out there to get some thoughts on the best solution.

Lemme spell it out for you: What hardaway said is obviously what he thinks/feels. That's all well and good, but he, and those speaking in his defense need to realize that he said it, he meant it, and he should have to deal with whatever comes as a result.

Where did you get the impression I said that? Let me say it one more time.......I'm talking about the people who don't think other people have the right to react to what he said because excercising their freedom of speech is somehow infringing on his freedom of speech. That's BS, they want to shut up his detractors for some reason.....I just wondered what that motivation might me.

Exactly what I've been thinking. I agree with everyone that says he had a right to say what he at least he was saying what he meant. Why apologize? It doesn't change the way he feels and as long he's just talking and not denying the rights of the people he feels the need to hate he should say what he really means(no matter how ignorant or vile).

I thought that was funny.

2119, kidding aside, I actually thought you were black. I don't know why I had that impression the past few months, I don't remember what you posted that may have had me thinking that way.
Now that we know you're not black, I guess autumn is within your reach.

This can all be broken down into something very simplistic: Hardaway is an idiot. And once the furor dies down, he'll return to his rightful place of irrelevance.

It just makes him look spineless and like a liar on top of what people think of him after what he said. He's just adding insult to injury for backing down on something he obviously feels strongly about.
