FEATURESBaker Mayfield returns for Year 2 married, comfortable and excited to see what season holdsby Scott Petrak July 25, 2019

BEREA — The list of significant changes for Baker Mayfield since last year at this time is staggering. A debate could last for hours at a bar on which is most important.

A new wife. He tied the knot a couple of weeks ago.

A new coach. Freddie Kitchens stands where Hue Jackson once did, and Mayfield is grateful for the switch.

A superstar wideout. Odell Beckham Jr. brings the type of talent that can transform a receiving corps and multiply a quarterback’s stats.

A starting role. When camp opened for him as a rookie, Mayfield was handcuffed to a backup spot with no chance of supplanting veteran Tyrod Taylor atop the depth chart.

“I can tell you what, I am definitely more excited and more comfortable now than I was last year — a lot more anxiety not knowing what was coming,” Mayfield said Thursday after the first practice of training camp. “I still don’t know how the season is going to go, but I know how I am going to work and how I am going to handle it. It is just being comfortable and knowing I have a place that I can call home and know that.”

Mayfield deferred to Taylor during camp last year but took ownership of the offense after assuming the starting role in Week 4 and throwing an NFL rookie-record 27 touchdown passes. The Browns are his team in Year 2, which was obvious as he stalked the field on the sunny summer day, delivering messages and drawing laughs from teammates and staff.

“Everything is not moving as fast. Just trying to get settled in a little more, handling the little things and getting the team together because that is what is important is making sure we are on the same page and fine-tuning things,” Mayfield said. “We are not going to be perfect, but as long as we communicate and we get on the same page, we will be able to work on that moving forward.”

Kitchens has watched the No. 1 pick become a better leader.

“It is his second year in the league. Some of that is just out of knowing what to expect,” he said. “He is doing his role in holding guys accountable.”

General manager John Dorsey said Wednesday that Mayfield is more mature than the average 24-year-old.

“I will take that because he is not as mature as his age,” Mayfield joked. “I think I had to grow up fast, just being in the spotlight, having to play early in college and then also just having to deal with media early on. I think you learn how you need to conduct yourself — not that I have been perfect by any means, I am definitely not saying that — having to deal with it early on.”

Before the Browns drafted Mayfield he said he was the right man to turn around a franchise that had just completed an 0-16 season. The process began last year — he went 6-7 as the starter, including 5-2 down the stretch — and he feels a different confidence level a year later.

“Absolutely, I think just the extra pieces we added, but also the guys who we had last year, we built a little bit in the second half of the year and just knowing what we are capable of,” he said. “We added more talent. We added some great coaches. Everybody can kind of feel that within the building. It is a good atmosphere.”

The screaming fans Thursday contributed.

“There are more people who are excited to watch us play. It is good to have that energy,” Mayfield said. “It makes it all the more exciting for us feeling the energy. It is like I said last year when we won the first couple of games — everybody was so excited — that we need to set the standard. This is a tradition-rich franchise that needs to have that standard every year. It is just getting back to that baseline, setting that foundation for everybody else and just for them to realize this is what they should expect every year. That is how you build a great culture and a great winning culture. They do deserve that, and that is how it needs to be.”

So he’s in complete agreement when Kitchens says the Super Bowl will be the goal every year.

“That absolutely should be the goal every year,” Mayfield said. “We want guys who want to win. We want guys who want to be here to work with each other. The goals should absolutely be that high.”

The Incredible Wisdom of Freddie Kitchens, the NFL's Most Quotable Coach
Updated: July 25, 2019

I am a Cleveland Browns fan, and I believe this year will be different.

Because after 11 consecutive losing seasons, this team is different. From quarterback Baker Mayfield to pass rush specialist Myles Garrett to wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., the Browns roster is stockpiled with talent. General manager John Dorsey has proven to be one of the best decision-makers in pro football. The rabid fanbase is re-energized in a way they haven't been since the franchise returned to Cleveland two decades ago. But something else is also different—the coach.

Before taking over as the Browns' offensive coordinator in Week 9 of the 2018 NFL season, Freddie Kitchens was a longtime position coach—and a beloved one, at that—but a guy who'd mostly flown under the radar. The 44-year-old with a northern Alabama drawl invigorated the Browns' offense and helped the team win five of their final seven games. He was formally named head coach shortly thereafter.

I'm naturally biased, but there's just something so refreshingly sensible about Kitchens' coaching style. With that, here are some nuggets of wisdom from the former University of Alabama quarterback.

💬 “If you’ve ever been around a loud coach, one that just screams & yells, listen to what he’s saying & see if he’s even teaching.”

And finally, an anecdote on Kitchens. When he was elevated to offensive coordinator mid-way through what had been a disastrous 2018 season for the Browns, he had a novel idea—ask the players what they like to run, then run it.

"In (Kitchens') first meeting with the offense, he said, 'We're gonna be as good as everyone in this room is.' He wanted ideas. He asked the offensive linemen, 'What runs do you guys like?' I'd never seen that before," Browns back-up quarterback Drew Stanton told Pro Football Talk. If a guy who's been in the NFL for nearly a decade and who's spent time with four different pro teams has never seen it, it's uncommon.

When it comes to coaching, common sense isn't always as common as we'd like to believe. Few personify that better than Kitchens.

They did.

There are a ton of clips out there. Lots of interviews. Tons of live tweets. The OBR keeps a running thread of live tweets. Great for keeping you updated in as close to real-time as possible.

I thought there was quite a bit out there. One thing I did not see alot of though is a general how did guys perform type of observation. other than OBJ.
Posted By: Versatile Dog Re: 2019 Browns Training Camp - 07/26/19 01:09 PM
Thanks.

I like reading articles about how guys performed during practice. The on-the-field stuff.

I prefer that to videos and tweets. I like videos that break down plays, such as the ones that Jake Burns or Baldy do, but that's about it.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to some actual articles that talk about how the players are performing, which guys are getting the most reps, timing between qb and receivers, pace of practice, etc

Cleveland Browns Camp Scribbles: A wonderful first day, talent everywhere! -- Terry Pluto

https://www.cleveland.com/browns/2019/07...erry-pluto.html

By Terry Pluto, The Plain Dealer

BEREA, Ohio – Scribbles in my Browns notebook from the first day of training camp:

1. It feels as if Browns fans have been waiting for this day for decades ... and that’s because it’s the truth. Every first day of training camp has a certain sense of emotional sunshine. But it doesn’t take long for the storm clouds of doubt to appear.

2. Not this year. Fans screamed when Odell Beckham Jr. and Baker Mayfield appeared on the practice field. Then the two players gave the fans something to cheer about. Beckham makes playing receiver look ridiculously easy. He made a leaping catch near the sideline, and a sensational diving catch later. A third pass was thrown about 6 inches off the ground and he snared it with seemingly no effort.

3. Beckham obviously is in a good shape. For all his celebrity status, the main point about Odell Beckham is the main point ... he is an elite receiver. And it’s clear Mayfield and Beckham developed some chemistry when they worked out together in Los Angeles during the summer. You don’t see any plays where the ball went one way and Beckham ran in the other direction.

4. Then there’s Jarvis Landry, who ran some short routes -- making knee-level catches for first downs. The Landry/Beckham combination is going to be so much fun to watch. As Mayfield said, “They make it easy.”

5. It’s hard not to stare at Beckham on the field, but there is so much more to see. When Landry lined up on the right side in the slot and Beckham was lined up wide to the left, you can imagine that will keep opposing defensive coordinators up at night.

6. That’s especially true because the Browns have Nick Chubb and Duke Johnson in the backfield. Chubb caught a couple of short passes and turned them into long gains. Johnson looked focused. Both guys are also effective running the ball.

7. When the Browns used a third receiver with Landry and Beckham, it usually was Rashard Higgins. He and tight end David Njoku should have chances to make big plays. You can’t cover everybody.

8. What also impressed was the speed on the defensive line. As the practice went along, the pass rush was stronger. Mayfield had less time to throw. Keep in mind, players were not in full pads. The means there is an asterisk next to these quick judgments. But speed is speed, and you can see how the Browns have upgraded it.

9. Defensive ends Myles Garrett and Olivier Vernon moved to different spots on the line. Garrett wanted to do that last season, but former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams kept Garrett rushing from the same basic area on the line.

10. Larry Ogunjobi and newcomer Sheldon Richardson have power at the tackle spots. If the Browns can sign defensive tackle Mike Daniels (recently cut by Green Bay), the interior defense become a major strength of the team.

11. Mayfield had two passes tipped – one by Garrett, the other by Ogunjobi. He also had to run the ball a few times because he was flushed out of the pocket. The Browns wanted to upgrade the pass rush, and they appear to have done so.

12. New defensive coordinator Steve Wilks usually played two linebackers, as opposed to the usual three in a 4-3 defense. Wilks likes to use a third safety near the line of scrimmage, and that could be Jermaine Whitehead.

13. One way to improve the tackling is to have better tacklers on the field. Whitehead could help defend the run. That would allow linebacker Joe Schobert to play to his strength – pass coverage. Veteran Morgan Burnett can also play that role as a run-stopping safety.

14. Coach Freddie Kitchens said he gave equal time to defensive backs Terrance Mitchell, T.J. Carrie and Greedy Williams. Mitchell and Carrie were usually with the starters, one of them playing on the opposite side from fellow cornerback Denzel Ward.

15. Kitchens on rookie Williams: “He’s not going to get handed the job. Mitchell and Carrie aren’t going away.”

16. Someone low on the depth chart who impressed: Blake Jackson, a former QB at Division III powerhouse Mary Hardin-Baylor. He is trying to make the Browns as a receiver, and he made some nice catches.

GC, two thoughts,

2nd. NOoo, Get Callaway on the Field! And Get him the Dang! Ball!!

...

First thought on reading this.

That's the best Freddie Kitchens quote, " Our team looks good on paper, Whoopty hell."

I want to see the Stadium erupt this quote in a chant, one side of the stadium shouting "Good on paper" the other side shouting "Whoopty hell"

That would be classic! Especially if the Browns are UP 40-nothin !!

I don't think that means what you think it means.

Whoopty hell pretty much means, "big deal".

He's pretty much saying that looking good on paper doesn't really mean anything. It's what you do on the field that matters.

There's only one problem. The Browns main site is a promotion tool of the Browns. It's hard for anyone to imagine they're getting a non bias viewpoint.

That's why it's so much better to get the opinions and views from other sources.

This is not Monken’s offense ...

With our WR’s, I can see us utilizing that option ... we have SO SO SO MANY OPTIONS ...

Start out with 3 wide and Chubb and duke in the backfield .... u can split one or both of them out from that formation ..... lets see who has the LBer on him ... *L* ...

Dawg ... we got so many options ... crap ... when we get hunt back we can line up in the wishbone and then split hunt and duke out wide and have 4 wides with Chubb to worry about ...

Fred/Todd and the rest of the coaches on O must have overload with all they can do with this O ...

Were NOT RESTRICTED AT ALL ON O ... we can do whatever the heck we want .... although we may need a “TE” needing to stay in to help with pass pro ...

This is going to be so much FUN!!!

Some thoughts:

--The point about OBJ and Landry is a good one. That's going to give DCs nightmares.

--Some of the article was over the top, like the pass rush thing. LOL... But, that's okay.

--I liked seeing the information on the 2 LBers and 3 Safeties. Looks like cfrs and Fl Dawg were right. I thought they would bring in an extra corner instead of a safety. That is excellent information.

Damarious Randall says Browns in next Super Bowl isn’t far-fetched

By Nate Ulrich

BEREA — Damarious Randall doesn’t shake his head in disbelief over the astronomical expectations placed on the Browns this year.

The starting free safety doesn’t even think it’s crazy to talk about the Browns extending their 2019 season all the way to the Super Bowl.

“I honestly didn’t think it was crazy last year,” Randall told the Beacon Journal/Ohio.com on Friday after the second practice of training camp. “If you look at the team we had and if you look at some of the close games we lost because of this or because of that — officials here, officials there — at the end of the day, we were a playoff team last year.

“And with the pieces that we added [in the offseason], if we stick together and we stay healthy and we just keep building this team chemistry, there is no reason why we shouldn’t be playing up in January and ultimately in February.”

Traded last year from the Green Bay Packers to the Browns, Randall became one of the defense’s better players and figures to be a focal point in the upcoming season.

It’s a particularly interesting time for him because he’s in the final season of his contract and scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent in March. General Manager John Dorsey said Wednesday he has had contract extension talks with Randall’s agent, Dave Butz, but “this thing is going to take a little bit of time.”

Randall acknowledged he’s been paying attention to the booming safety market. The Tennessee Titans made Kevin Byard the highest-paid safety in NFL history on Wednesday by striking a deal on a five-year, $70.5 million contract extension.

“I’m just glad guys are getting what they deserve and just tip your hat to them,” Randall said, stressing he’s focused making life easier for his teammates, learning the playbook of new Browns defensive coordinator Steve Wilks and winning games instead of his contract situation.

Browns safety Damarious Randall on his legendary trash talk, big expectations this season and his contract situation.

Although Randall admitted he was amused by Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Jalen Ramsey recently showing up to training camp in a Brinks truck, he vowed not to follow suit. What he has done is make it clear he would like to re-sign with the Browns.

“You know I want to be here!” Randall said. “I like to finish what I started. [When] I came here, this team was 0-16 and we set out a goal and that’s to win the world championship and that’s the Lombardi Trophy, and that’s something I want to do before I leave here.”

If Randall ever reaches the Super Bowl, he’ll be talking trash throughout his journey there. New teammate and friend Odell Beckham Jr. -- they met in 2014 while the superstar wide receiver trained for the NFL Scouting Combine -- noted Randall is “going to talk, and that’s what I love about him.”

Randall, 26, insisted the more he talks trash, the better he plays.

“It actually does get to some people and guys then start kind of telegraphing routes, just telegraphing things,” he said. “I even talk trash to some of the coaches on the sideline.”

Last season, after the Browns fired coach Hue Jackson and he joined the staff of the Cincinnati Bengals, Randall intercepted a pass and handed the ball to Jackson on the sideline.

Can he top that moment?

“I guess you’ll have to wait and see, man,” Randall replied. “This season will be fun. We’ve got a lot of prime-time games, so people are going to see the identity of this team, people are going to see the swagger of this team and people are going to see why so many people are [bullish about] this team. People aren’t crazy. People know what we’ve got here, and it’s going to be fun to see up in September.”

On Sept. 16, the Browns will visit the New York Jets for a “Monday Night Football” matchup. Former Browns defensive coordinator and interim coach Gregg Williams is the new defensive coordinator of the Jets.

Will Williams become another target of Randall’s verbal jabs?

“What you think?” Randall fired back.

Randall didn’t love the way Williams used him last season. He’s confident he’ll enjoy the Wilks experience more.

“I think I’ll actually be able to be in the game,” Randall said. “I mean, last year there were a couple games to where I was in the middle of the field 25 yards deep to where I didn’t feel very involved in the game plan.

“I honestly thought it was crazy to have an instinctive player like me that far away from the ball, but I was doing what I was told to do. And this year, Steve Wilks obviously recognizes my talents and he obviously knows what I’m capable of, and he is going to have me closer to the ball, closer to the action and more making plays up on the ball.”

Randall didn’t receive any Pro Bowl recognition last year, but he is convinced he had a Pro Bowl-caliber 2018 season.

“This year, I will probably leave no doubt,” he said.

In 15 games last year, Randall compiled 84 tackles, four interceptions, nine passes defensed and a fumble recovery despite playing through injuries in 11 of those games. It was also his first NFL season as a free safety, the same position he played at Arizona State University, where he graduated in May. He played cornerback in his three seasons with the Packers, who drafted him in the first round (30th overall) in 2015.

“The plays are going to come,” Randall said. “The game-changing pick-sixes, they are definitely going to come.”

If you buy what Randall is selling, perhaps they’ll even come in February.

Gawd, I hate watching videos of people like that, but there was really some good information in the clip.

--I like how OBJ sets the tone and Juice watches all the other guys to make sure they do it right.

--Greedy had two picks, but it sounds like Mitchell might be getting more reps w/the 1s.

--The RG position is not settled.

--The kicking battle will be interesting.

Interesting. This is why Dorsey brought him on board. Step up or step off, I guess. Want to see him hit.

JC Tretter on right guard battle: ‘We’re kind of getting used to all three of them’

BEREA, Ohio – Browns center JC Tretter got his turn in front of the media on Friday, following the second day of training camp.

Here are some takeaways from what he had to say.

1. He doesn’t have inside information on the RG battle.

“I don’t know that. That’s up to the coaches and the staff,” Tretter said. “Right now, it is who is going to separate themselves and play the best, and for the rest of the four guys, it is about getting used to the three guys who are going to be rotating in there and kind of get used to each person.

“I am sure that will get settled sometime midway or whenever that is and then you will dial into one person and get used to that one person. For right now, I think it is still really early. Everybody is going to get a shot, and we will see who steps up to the table.”

On Thursday, Tretter got a full day next to Austin Corbett, the presumed favorite in the days following Kevin Zeitler’s trade to the Giants. On Friday, Tretter lined up next to Kyle Kalis.

That means Saturday should bring Eric Kush to the starting offensive line.

2. Working with a different right guard each day isn’t much of an issue.

The rotation of Corbett/Kalis/Kush has been happening since OTAs, and Tretter, along with right tackle Chris Hubbard, have learned plenty about each player at this point.

“We’ve got so much time with OTAs, going with all three of the guys, and everybody kind of has a different set, a different feel and a different way to interpret calls,” Tretter said. “So you kind of have your own communication with all three of them. You know, if I call this, what do you think? Just kind of get on the same page. And then each day is kind of their own, every guy gets a chance a day. So you kind of just get used to working with that guy all day.”

3. He is able to translate Packers lingo to Browns lingo.

Along with working in new right guards each day, the offensive line is learning a new offense, and dealing with new coaches in James Campen (offensive line coach/associate head coach) and Jeff Blasko (assistant offensive line coach).

Lucky for the Browns, Tretter has past experience with their teachings due to their time in Green Bay. Tretter was with the Packers from 2013-16, which overlapped with Campen’s tenure as offensive line coach.

“It’s almost like I’ve become the Rosette Stone of the group,” Tretter said. “I kind of know what (Campen) and (Blasko) are thinking, having been with them for a while. And I know how the guys interpret it, too, so I’m kind of like the middle-man getting everybody on the same wavelength.”

4. Pads will only make the offensive line stronger.

The Browns will be in pads Saturday for the first time since the end of last season. Multiple players have mentioned how the competition between the offensive and defensive lines will change with pads. Tretter made sure to shoot down some misinformation about pads.

“Yeah, I think it actually makes out jobs easier," he said. "I think you get these D linemen in tight jerseys sweating, and you can’t grab them and you can’t do anything. I think the defensive line has not become aware that it only makes our job easier when we get the pads on. They think they are going to get an advantage tomorrow when the pads come on, but I think we equally think we have the advantage once the pads come on.”

Training camp log, Day 2by Scott Petrak July 26, 2019

GETTING SERIOUS: The pads come on for the first time Saturday, which guarantees more intensity and energy at practice.

And extra soreness afterward. The players haven’t worked in pads since the end of last season.

“I am very excited about getting the pads on because the game of football is played with pads,” coach Freddie Kitchens said. “I am looking forward to it and all the things it brings with it.”

Kitchens said there will be full-contact periods but didn’t know if he’d allow tackling to the ground.

NEWS OF THE DAY: The kicker competition got cranking with a head-to-head battle near the start of practice. Incumbent Greg Joseph was 4-for-4 from 41, 33, 48 and 51 yards. Rookie fifth-round pick Austin Seibert was 3-for-4, missing wide right from 41. His make from 48 caromed off the left upright.

General manager John Dorsey watched it all from right next to the goalposts.

NEWS OF THE DAY II: Free agent defensive tackle Mike Daniels signed a one-year, $9.1 million deal with the Detroit Lions after visiting the Browns on Thursday.

CAMPER OF THE DAY: The unknown gets the nod over the top draft pick, as undrafted rookie receiver Damon Sheehy-Guiseppi made a couple of more plays than cornerback Greedy Williams, the No. 46 pick.

Sheehy-Guiseppi beat veteran cornerback Terrance Mitchell deep twice in one-on-one drills and made a nice catch on an underthrown ball despite being held by Robert Jackson. Sheehy-Guiseppi, who’s trying to make the team as a kick returner, had one drop but made up for it with several catches.

Williams had two interceptions, including one intended for Odell Beckham Jr. in the end zone.

PLAY OF THE DAY: Tight end David Njoku had three touchdown catches on posts, the third on the final play of practice. The offense won the one-play competition from the 4-yard line, so the defense had to run sprints.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: “It’s almost like I become the Rosetta Stone of the group. So I’m kind of that middle man of getting everybody on the same wavelength.” — Center JC Tretter on interpreting for his linemates the teaching of new line coach James Campen and assistant line coach Jeff Blasko, whom he was with in Green Bay.

Dang bro ... one of the WR groups goals should be to be the best blocking group in the league ... not just run blocking .. passing also, help your brother out ...

This could be really special ... really really special ... thumbsup

An offensive line---more than any other unit on the football field--must work collaboratively and be in sync.

It is my hope that one of the potential RGs establishes himself quickly so this unit has more time to jell.

I think this is especially important due to the new verbiage because we replaced our OL coach.

You might be right. However, Freddie made a comment about wanting players to be in the right places and run the right routes. According to Zegura (on the podcast I posted) Calloway has already made two mental errors in the first two days. It is early in camp so Calloway has plenty of time to pass Higgins on the depth chart.

I know what you are looking for but I haven't seen any of those reports yet.

As for the podcast,

Freddie said he will run a physical camp.He did not specify how much tackling will be done or if it will be to the ground or not. He also said the NFL keeps great stats for injuries, most of which come within the first 5 practices in camp. Because of this he has some players on pitch counts. They will practice but will get less reps.

Undrafted rookie receiver Damon Sheehy-Guiseppi had a good day as a receiver. They talked about how hard he practices, getting up at 2am to catch balls.

Greedy had two picks, one off of Baker while he was covering OBJ in the endxone.

Someone mentioned Kendall Lamm has had slow feet in pass protection. He was brought in this offseason to compete for a guard position.

I agree that I can read this faster and more efficiently. I want to be listening to the Indians game on the radio and reading these article in-between the action. Can't listen to them and the game at the same time.

If they feel that they have to post a video, how about a written transcript below so those of us who prefer to read can.
And can you dress semi professionally? Jeans with holes? Maybe tuck in a shirt.
Guess I got old when I wasn't looking.

As for the summary, everything they said has been posted here on this board somewhere. The one thing that I am not sure where I read it so not sure if in a thread yet was something about OBJ and VG. For the drill OBJ is alway going first. To show everyone the expectations of how they are expecting things to be done. VG is always going last to sort of police the others and make sure they are doing things correctly and putting in the proper effort. Apparently they came up with this idea on their own. Part of the reasoning is to avoid the controversy of who is going first between the 2 of them.

Agreed. There are a lot of articles/videos out there like that on other sites. I always pause the video and just read the article. I like your idea of the local dudes having both options.

Greedy is getting used to catching so many int.s from Baker, wonder if they'd use him on offense for one play!

If Damarious Randall thinks the Browns win the Super Bowl,

This is how I see it possible, I see a lot of ball distribution and accuracy on a level in Bakers game that I don't quite know how to say, this is this or it's better than this or anything,

but It reminds me, at least some of, Steve Youngs style, and

I still don't know how he came in and won a SuperBowl when Joe Montana left the Niners, but I remember he did.

If Steve Young won a Super Bowl and I don't know how he did it, it's hypothetically the way I see the Browns chance of at the end of it all, the Browns win it and I just don't know how it happened, but it would follow along the same kind of pattern, I think.

People working for newspapers are always wanting to get their face on camera to have tape. All of them are praying they get hired by some television network because newspapers are just about dead. They are all auditioning, fighting for their survival.

Working for a newspaper is a uncomfortable place.

Well, there is an old saying that "he has a face for radio."

Somehow, that phrase came to mind when watching the one video. LOL

Im not sure I follow your comment/post...

Steve Young was a great quarterback and he was fast. Baker isn't as fleet-footed. I do think there are similarities between the two, but I'm not sure their style of play is the same. The way Young played he was lucky to have a career as long as he did. That guy got beat up, a lot. He was fun to watch. Baker isn't a runner like Young, and that was a large part of his game. Someone like Lamar Jackson could be a Steve Young-type, but I'm not sure Jackson can withstand the beating Young took.
Posted By: Ballpeen Re: 2019 Browns Training Camp - 07/27/19 12:36 PM
He will never take the beating Young did due to rules changes.
Posted By: YTownBrownsFan Re: 2019 Browns Training Camp - 07/27/19 02:04 PM
I think it goes beyond that.

I think that a large segment of the public doesn't want to sit down and read an article. Thus the paper gives them video clips. It gives them more clicks.
Posted By: Pdawg Re: 2019 Browns Training Camp - 07/27/19 04:25 PM
Baker just went nuts (NSFW) on his receivers for giving up on the play and not getting open when he was forced out of the pocket.

Kirksey turned to the crowd and yelled “that means the defense is looking good.”

This is from Day 2 of TC re: the kicking competition from Zac Jackson....

There’s a kicking competition going on, and after there were no kicks on the first day of camp, incumbent Greg Joseph was up first early in practice Friday. He went 4-for-4, making all of them rather easily. Rookie Austin Seibert missed badly from 41 yards, then made a 48-yarder with the benefit of a fortunate kiss off the left upright. His final kick, a 51-yarder, wasn’t exactly beautiful, but it easily cleared the uprights.

Both Joseph and Seibert have a lot of leg. Both have a lot to prove, so stay tuned.

Browns notebook: Baker Mayfield calls out teammates in practice, Freddie Kitchens approves

BEREA — Baker Mayfield is the clear-cut leader of the Browns.

If case someone didn’t already know it, the young quarterback reminded everyone in attendance Saturday at the third practice of training camp.

As Mayfield rolled to his right under pressure during an 11-on-11 period, he became furious with his wide receivers and yelled for them to work the scramble drill. For emphasis, he used an F-bomb as an adjective. Pleased with the fiery display, the crowd cheered.

And coach Freddie Kitchens approved of Mayfield calling out his teammates.

“I expect my quarterback to get everybody on the same page,” Kitchens said after practice. “That’s what I want.

“I think you have different [types of] leaders. I want him to be himself. If he wanted to say something, he said something. It does not matter to me.

“They need to be on the same page. That is their job. I am going to do my job, and everybody needs to do their job. Just do their job, and we will be successful.

“Some people did and some people did not, so whenever somebody does not, somebody needs to correct it, whether it is a coach, another player or another player in the same room. I do not care how it is done. I just want it corrected.”

Mayfield got it corrected.

“He’s getting on us because he cares, and obviously we’ve got to do a great job of what he says,” wide receiver Rashard Higgins said. “So we’ve got to scramble.”

Running back Nick Chubb said Mayfield’s outburst served as a necessary wake-up call.

Rashard Higgins interview: Browns wide receiver talks chemistry with Baker Mayfield and more

“It gets us going,” Chubb said. ”... We’re all for each other, and if he wants something changed like that, we’re going to fix it, we’re going to get it right for him. It wasn’t like he was out of place. He said exactly what needed to be done. We’re the ones running with him. We needed that.”

The defense had the upper hand for the vast majority of practice. A moment after Mayfield shouted, linebacker Christian Kirksey playfully told fans the QB’s reaction proved the defense had been performing well.

However, Mayfield had the last laugh. During a two-minute drill late in practice, he connected with receiver Odell Beckham Jr. for 18 yards, receiver Jarvis Landry for 19 yards and Landry for a 23-yard touchdown on a three-play, 60-yard scoring drive.

“That’s what happens when we execute,” Kitchens said. “Those guys did a good job. They did a good job up front. Baker had time to throw, and they did a good job running the routes and catching the ball. I expect them to execute.”

Not too Greedy

Rookie cornerback Greedy Williams impressed last month in mandatory minicamp, and he has maintained his momentum in the early stages of training camp.

Even though he practiced with the starters for most of the spring, he worked with the second unit in the first two training camp practices. After he had two interceptions Friday, including one off a Mayfield pass intended for Beckham in the end zone, he rotated in with the No. 1 defense Saturday.

“That was a great feeling,” Williams said after the third practice of camp. “Getting started early in camp, getting an interception definitely brings a lot of confidence and makes you go out there and grab another one. Just having fun with the game and when plays come my way, I make ’em.”

Pro Bowler Denzel Ward and TJ Carrie have been fixtures on the first-team defense. Williams and Terrance Mitchell are in a battle.

“I just know I’ve got to keep building, come back every day and just keep building and put myself in a great position to be with the ones,” Williams said. “Right now, I’m just happy where I’m at, ready to keep building each and every day.”

The coaching staff is making the second-round draft pick earn the job instead of handing it to him.

“Oh, yeah, it was like this at LSU,” he said. “I redshirted, came out, just got an opportunity and took advantage of it.”

That may be the correct attitude to possess, given the fact the Browns have experienced cornerbacks. On the first 11-on-11 play of practice, Carrie intercepted a deep pass Mayfield intended for Beckham.

“TJ made a great play on a post route,” Williams said. “He came to the sideline. I gave him a lot of love.

“We’re just working together as one unit just trying to put the best players in the best positions and trying to make this team a winning team.”

Dialing it down

It proved to be a baptism of sorts on the opening day of training camp when rookie linebacker Sione Takitaki laid a hit on veteran running back Duke Johnson while the team practiced without pads.

Johnson took offense and there was a short dustup afterward. In Saturday’s practice, the first with players wearing pads, Takitaki appeared to horse collar running back Dontrell Hilliard.

“I feel like I’m a high-energy guy, so I just go out there and try to attack stuff and do everything right. Kind of got chippy,” Takitaki, a third-round pick, said. “But that’s just me being a rookie and not understanding what the NFL is and coming out here and practicing right. That’s kind of one of the learning things that, over these three days, I’ve been learning from the vets and the coaches just to play under control, keep everybody healthy, things like that.”

The coaches have let him know it’s an important lesson to learn.

“He is a physical guy. Sometimes he lets that get the best of him when we are in shorts,” Kitchens said. “I don’t want him to change who he is. I just want him to be able to play in shorts, practice in shorts and get better. He is working at that.”

New experience

Second-year running back Nick Chubb occupies a different role in the locker room as opposed to last year’s training camp, when veteran Carlos Hyde was still on the roster.

With 2017 Pro Bowl selection Kareem Hunt sidelined with a groin injury and suspended by the NFL for the first eight regular-season games of 2019, Chubb realizes he needs to take on a leadership role.

“In a way, I do because I know that as of right now, I am the starting back,” Chubb said. “Whatever comes with that, comes with it, but I am ready for it. I am ready to help this team out in any way that I can and lead the other running backs.”

Greedy Williams making early push for permanent spot in starting lineupby Scott Petrak July 27, 2019

BEREA — Rookie cornerback Greedy Williams ran stride for stride with Odell Beckham Jr. on a deep route down the left sideline Saturday.

He jostled with 6-foot-7 tight end Demetrius Harris on an incompletion into the end zone.

He had two interceptions a day earlier, including one in the end zone on a pass intended for Beckham.

The coaching staff wants Williams, the No. 46 pick out of LSU who had a strong minicamp, to earn his spot in the starting lineup and had him open training camp with the second-team defense. He took the depth chart in stride and is closing fast on veterans Terrance Mitchell and TJ Carrie.

“I just know I’ve got to keep building,” Williams said Saturday. “Come back every day and just keep building and put myself in a great position to be with the ones.”

He realizes the coaches may be testing him to see how he handles a challenge.

“That could be a possibility, just trying to see where my head is at,” he said. “I’m in high spirits, just want to get better every day and learn from the older guys. Hopefully I put myself in a great position.”

Coach Freddie Kitchens likes that Williams has gotten his hands on a lot of balls already — he had eight interceptions in two seasons at LSU — and wants to see the development continue.

“He just needs to keep getting better every day,” Kitchens said. “I don’t know if there is any one thing I can point out. He just needs to get better.”

The coaches should get all the information they need to determine whether Williams belongs in the starting lineup opposite Denzel Ward, the No. 4 pick last year. With Beckham and Jarvis Landry at receiver, all the cornerbacks will be put through the wringer.

“Those are high-tier guys and if you’ve got some of those guys on your team to make a defense better, I’d rather have them, too,” said Williams, who’s rotated in with the first team the last couple of days. “They come out with it every day. Moving fast, knowing their assignment and they just want to make everybody better, whoever they’re going against.”

Lining up across from Beckham is extra special.

“One of the greatest I’ve ever seen play their position,” Williams said. “Just going up against him gives me a big boost on other guys. It is a shocking moment just being on his side, playing against him. But at the end of the day it’s all football, we just compete and try to be one of those great teams.”

At 6-2, 185 pounds and on an island, fans have had no problem identifying Williams in his No. 26 brown jersey. He’s received loud cheers and there’s a buzz whenever he’s on the field.

“It’s amazing, just them welcoming me in and they just want to see me do great on the field,” he said. “And that’s one of the big moments that you play for, just having the fans into it and I just want to make them happy.”

Not only does he have the Chris Rock face, he has the catchy nickname given to him by an aunt as a 6-month-old because he drank so much milk.

“Oh, yeah, they love the Greedy nickname,” he said. “You’ve got to love it.”

He’s also giving teammates plenty of reasons to appreciate him.

“A young guy who comes in every day willing to work, willing to learn,” safety Jermaine Whitehead said. “You should see him in the classroom, a lot of questions, just a hungry guy that wants to get on the field. You know, he loves to compete, and that’s all I can ask from him.”

And he has big-time ball skills.

“He’s very competitive, makes a lot of plays,” Whitehead said. “That’s exactly why he was drafted and we hope he can help us get far.”

Linebacker Sione Takitaki was drafted in the third round, 34 spots later than Williams, and has gotten to know Williams.

“Greedy’s a funny guy. He’s always joking around in the locker room,” he said. “But he’s actually a really mature kid. He has a daughter, takes care of his business. And then when he’s out there on the field he does his job making plays.”

The end zone interception in front of Beckham gave Williams a jolt that could propel him into the starting lineup to stay. He said he did what he was supposed to and was in the right spot.

“That was a great feeling,” Williams said. “Getting started early in camp, getting an interception definitely brings a lot of confidence and makes you go out there and grab another one. Just having fun with the game and when plays come my way, I make ’em.”

His favorite part was getting the ball at its apex.

“Catching the ball at the highest point is one of the best pictures you can ever get as a DB,” he said.

His nerves vanished with the first interception in organization team activities, but he’s still asking questions and receiving guidance from Carrie and Mitchell despite the competition.

“Playing time is going to come for each of us and we’re just locking in and helping each other out,” Williams said. “No bad blood. We’re all on the same page trying to do what’s best for the team.”

Greedy is such a likable guy.

Hungry and high effort will always catch a coaches attention.

But Greedy is so natural as a corner. Smooth, quick, burst, has that recover speed. Has the length.

He is going to make his mark in this game.

trooper, I think Robinson is going to continue to improve upon last years performance. Our line as a whole is going to be solid by the most important measure. not pff grades, those are irrelevant. The only measures that matter are does baker stay upright to complete his passes and do our running backs have holes to run thru.

Fresh Takes: Observations from Day 4 of Browns training camp

The Browns' motto in 2019 and beyond -- especially in the team's 2020 redesign -- is "Nothing Fancy."

Perhaps the coaching staff should consider adding "nothing foolish" to it.

Sunday's practice saw a few avoidable mistakes, including one that landed the players on the sideline for a little bit of a mental reminder of what not to do when between the lines. Instead of football, fans were treated to a front row seat for conditioning.

Here are our five observations from Day 4 of #BrownsCamp.

1. A good session goes sideways

Sunday was a productive day on the field through the majority of practice. The offense seemed to fix its issues from the previous day and was carrying over some of the momentum gained from its impressive finish to Saturday's session. Practice had a crisp pace, mental errors were scarce and the competition was strong. Both units were battling.

Then, the competition boiled over. We had our first skirmish of camp.

The culprits: defensive end Chad Thomas and tight end Pharaoh Brown, with Thomas serving as the primary aggressor. The initial scrum lasted for close to 30 seconds, with tight end Orson Charles attempting to separate the two before linebacker Christian Kirksey walked Thomas off the field. It was late in the practice, and head coach Freddie Kitchens was not OK with the time wasted.

He sent the entire team to the sideline to run half-gassers -- sideline to sideline and back -- and made sure Thomas returned to the field to run with his teammates.

Each group ran three half-gassers before the team convened for a huddle and then returned to the practice agenda. The whole process ate up about 10 minutes of time.

Veteran defensive end Olivier Vernon wasn't surprised that a fight broke out -- that's the nature of football camp -- but he did say Sunday was a first for him.

"O-line, D-line, we're always going to battle it out," Vernon said. "There's always going to be words exchanged. It's training camp. Ain't nothing changed, it's been like that since the prehistoric times. Guys are going to get into it, they're going to bark at each other. That's how it is. It's football."

But Sunday was a first for the seven-year veteran.

"That's my first time (running because of a fight)," Vernon said. "Different. Freddie, he don't want us doing anything dumb. He wants us practicing hard but practicing smart. You know, that's what it is. We've just got to take ownership of that."

The fight will be forgotten a day from now, if not sooner. Scuffles are part of the mentally and physically grueling experience that is a training camp. It's not for the meek.

"It's still camp, it's still football, like I said it's an emotional game," defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi said. "All of us have egos in some way, shape or form. Sometimes it's gonna happen. You've just gotta take it, because it's camp."

But the running, in front of thousands of fans on a picturesque Sunday in Berea, is indeed different. It's part of a no-nonsense approach taken by Kitchens, who seems like a jovial, friendly guy but also takes everything on the field incredibly seriously. He sends flag-drawing linemen on a run to the nearest wall, and he'll send his whole team 53 1/3 yards and back if they make mistakes.

"We just don't practice penalties," Kitchens explained Sunday, "and like I told you guys the other day, if you do something wrong in life, there's consequences."

"We're gonna be in shape," Vernon said. "I'll tell you that."

2. A good day for Austin Corbett

Sunday was the first big day for Austin Corbett in the ongoing battle for the open right guard position.

The rotation at the spot kicked off with Corbett running with the starters, but he wasn't in pads. Those began Saturday with Eric Kush getting the first-team reps.

When it flipped back over to Corbett, the pads were on. And Corbett impressed.

While the defense threw a variety of blitzes at the interior front three -- watching Joel Bitonio and JC Tretter pass off twisting linemen is a treat -- Corbett remained stout. Never was Corbett completely beaten, and even if he lost off the snap, he managed to recover in time to protect Baker Mayfield. He was also effective in the run game, with the first play of the full-contact team period going for a Dontrell Hilliard touchdown off the right hip of Corbett.

It was an important performance for Corbett, who hadn't done anything to lose the job, but also hadn't gone out and taken control of it, either. It was encouraging, if not relieving to see Corbett play well Sunday. Should he string together a few of these sessions, he'd be in good shape to end up as the starter.

Beyond the starting job, Kush returned to second-team center with Kalis manning second-team guard and third-team center responsibilities. An interesting wrinkle new to camp was the shifting of Drew Forbes from left tackle to right guard and back. When he was at left tackle, Bryan Witzmann played right guard. When Forbes played right guard, Witzmann moved back to left guard, and Brad Seaton played left tackle.

It's clear the staff is tinkering with the line in an attempt to figure out its depth early in camp.

3. Defensive line learning each other

Much has been made of the Browns' offensive potential, but the winners early in camp have been the defensive linemen. They've caused plenty of issues for the offense and look to be the strongest position group on the defensive side of the ball, especially when strictly discussing starters.

Vernon and Myles Garrett are ferocious off the edge, Sheldon Richardson is a load and a half to handle inside -- just ask the Browns' interior offensive linemen -- and Larry Ogunjobi might be the defense's best-kept secret. They seem to be adjusting to each other quicker than usual, too.

"It's good, we're just trying to build cohesiveness, building a bond and learning off each other," Vernon said Sunday. "That's typically how it goes in a D-line room. Just build chemistry."

Vernon's inclusion is interesting because he is flipping sides of the line with Garrett depending on the offense's strong side, something he called "just another challenge." Vernon is also returning to playing as a traditional defensive end after filling a 3-4 outside linebacker role in New York last season. That means more snaps with his hand in the dirt.

"We played a lot of Nickel last year," Vernon explained. "So I could've had my hand in the dirt a lot. It was just labeled as a 3-4. But it always feels good to have your hand in the dirt and rushing four guys, four dawgs. Let's get it."

A big point of emphasis on the subject from both Vernon and Ogunjobi was the freedom afforded to them by defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, which then allows them to play off each other. That was emphasized by each player Sunday, which should excite fans. Players with such talent being given space to do what they deem is best should create more positive plays for this defense.

4. Rough go for kickers

There was a consistent breeze Sunday that made the conditions pleasant for those in attendance, but more difficult for those kicking.

Austin Seibert and Greg Joseph both struggled during field goal sessions, with Joseph hitting more field goals in the special teams portion, and neither hitting a situational field goal at the end of practice with the Browns facing a hypothetical 2-point deficit.

Kitchens wasn't too concerned with their play afterward. It's early in camp.

"Listen, when you're a kicker, you better have a short memory," Kitchens said. ... "If you're playing for us, all of the positions, because we're going to play the next play. That's the only one that matters. I'm not concerned about that kick, I'm worried about the one tomorrow."

To each of their credit, when warming up at the start of practice, each hit at least one kick on the extremely narrow goal posts set up on Field 2, which is very difficult to do.

5. Team playing with passion
Kitchens emphasized repeatedly during the offseason how important it was to him that his players are passionate about football and play the game with passion. He's getting plenty of that so far.

The defense and offense have quite a rivalry going early in camp, with the defenders (unsurprisingly, Damarious Randall chiefly among them) talking plenty of trash to the offense and vice versa. The defense got a boost late in practice when Mayfield completed a pass to Jarvis Landry, who made a man miss and looked to be off to the races when Joe Schobert swooped in from behind and knocked the ball out of Landry's arm. Jermaine Whitehead recovered the fumble, ending the first team's chance to get in position to kick a hypothetical game-winning field goal.

Words were exchanged as the units left the field -- and this was after the fight had happened.

This type of energy is important because despite its conflicting nature, it'll help this group when they have to band together and take on an actual opponent in the regular season. In the meantime, they're competing and making each other better on a daily basis.

Kitchens even applauded Thomas and Brown, saying the two "were making each other better" when the fight broke out. He likes the passion; he just wants it directed through better channels.

And teammates aren't as upset about running as one might think, because they understand the message sent by Kitchens. They're all out to play with passion without penalties.

"Same thing like in high school and college," Ogunjobi said. "It is annoying and you do not want to do it, but at the end of the day if it happens to you, it is the same result. And as brothers, sometimes your brother makes a mistake and nobody makes a mistake on purpose, but sometimes when you get a penalty the whole team pays for it and that is just an example of that. So being able to just bounce back from it and have to finish practice and still focus and still have a job to do. I feel like it does a good job for the team so it is cool."

Training camp log, Day 4

https://www.brownszone.com/2019/07/28/training-camp-log-day-4-2/

FAN (MOSTLY) FRIENDLY: The players interacted with fans throughout the day, including during practice. All of them were positive, except for defensive end Chad Thomas flipping the bird toward the stands.

Receiver Odell Beckham Jr. changed cleats early in practice and handed the first pair to a young fan, and defensive end Myles Garrett played catch with fans in the bleachers from the field.

Rookie offensive lineman Drew Forbes and rookie quarterback David Blough took it up a notch, climbing into the bleachers and running down the front row slapping hands with the fans. Quarterback Baker Mayfield, who’s sporting a new mustache, and quarterbacks coach Ryan Lindley egged on Blough.

NEWS OF THE DAY: Owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam spoke to reporters in their annual camp news conference. They’re happy to see the fans excited for the season, and Jimmy Haslam said he expects coach Freddie Kitchens and Mayfield to be with the team for a long time.

CAMPER OF THE DAY: Garrett is spending more time on the left side of the defensive line after the addition of end Olivier Vernon. That’s been bad news for right tackle Chris Hubbard.

Garrett badly beat Hubbard on two plays Sunday for what would’ve been sacks and spent a lot of time in the backfield. He also scooped up a Mayfield fumble to punctuate a defensive stop.

Garrett was ranked No. 49 on NFL Network’s Top 100 list, one spot above Mayfield.

“Lowest I’ll ever be again,” tweeted Garrett, whose goal for 2019 is to be Defensive Player of the Year.

PLAY OF THE DAY: Running back Dontrell Hilliard is getting more time with the starters and second team with Duke Johnson (hamstring) and Kareem Hunt (groin) sidelined. He took advantage with a 40-yard touchdown run off right tackle. The line opened a hole, Hilliard avoided a diving tackle attempt by cornerback Phillip Gaines and was off to the races.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: “I think the expectation is to win. I think that’s everybody’s expectation.” — Dee Haslam.

Browns Owners Confident, Optimistic About Season
By BRIAN DULIK -

https://pro32.ap.org/article/browns-owners-confident-optimistic-about-season

BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Jimmy and Dee Haslam purchased the Cleveland Browns in 2012. After five coaching changes and zero winning seasons, both are confident this is finally their year.

"I think the expectation is to win," Dee Haslam said. "I think that is everybody's expectation. We feel like we're off to a great start. We can't help but be excited for the fans. It's a big deal for Cleveland. It's tremendous."

The Tennessee businessman and his television producer wife held their annual training camp news conference Sunday, endorsing the goal of winning the Super Bowl set by coach Freddie Kitchens and general manager John Dorsey.

Though the Browns haven't made the playoffs in 17 years and have a 26-78-1 record under the Haslams' ownership, they welcome the sky-high expectations being fueled by quarterback Baker Mayfield and Pro Bowl wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.

"You would much rather be in this position," Jimmy Haslam said. "We've learned a lot as we've gone along. It has been painful, but I think we have really good people in our organization that we feel really comfortable with.

"The most important lesson was to get the right people in the right place — and to get a quarterback."

Mayfield set an NFL rookie record with 27 touchdown passes last season, leading Cleveland to its best record since 2007 at 7-8-1. At the time, Dorsey making him the No. 1 overall selection out of Oklahoma was viewed as a gamble, but is already paying off.

"We not only have a really good quarterback, he is also a really good leader who loves football," Jimmy Haslam said. "We were fortunate to have the first pick, and John and his team made a great pick in Baker. Obviously, he is going to be a part of our franchise for a long time to come."

Running back Kareem Hunt, who was cut by the Chiefs, has a much murkier future with the Browns. The Northeast Ohio native has been suspended for eight games by the NFL, but negotiations with the league to keep him around the team are ongoing.

Hunt was involved in a recent fight outside a downtown Cleveland bar, prompting further fan criticism of his signing.

"I think you have to take the situation very, very, very seriously," Dee Haslam said. "We know that Kareem has work to do and he is in counseling, working really hard. It's up to him. It is truly up to him. He needs to work really hard to be part of our organization."

The Browns' business pursuits were addressed, as well, including their desire to extend the lease on their suburban Cleveland practice facility to 2039. Dee Haslam added that the long-term plan to develop property around FirstEnergy Stadium is moving slowly.

The team also is redesigning its much maligned uniforms, which will be replaced next season. When a reporter asked if the Browns' unique, logo-less helmets would be changed at the same time, Dee Haslam answered emphatically.

"No. No. Never. Absolutely never," she said. "We talk all the time that Cleveland has a certain way about it and we want our organization to reflect that."

Ultimately, none of the extraneous issues are as important as winning games. Jimmy Haslam declined to make a specific prediction for this season, but his confident tone said it all.

"John and Freddie have done a good job expressing our expectations," he said. "It looks like we put together a good team. We also feel really good about the people we have in place.

"But you have to remember we only won seven games last year. Enough talk. We have to go out and win games now."

NOTES: DE Chad Thomas, a third-round pick in 2018, made a vulgar gesture toward a group of fans while he was running sprints. Kitchens made the entire squad run as punishment after Thomas and TE Pharaoh Brown got into a fight. "I have talked to Chad about it, but that's going to stay between us," the coach said. "I think he will learn." ... Rookie K Austin Seibert missed 4 of 5 field-goal attempts, making the fifth-round selection 4 of 9 in camp. Incumbent K Greg Joseph is 8 of 9. ... RB Duke Johnson (right hamstring) missed his second straight practice. Hunt (groin) and RB Trayone Gray (calf) remain on the active/non-football injury list.

BROWNS CAMP HAPPENINGS

David Blough was football’s man of the hour last October when he passed for 378 yard’s in Purdue’s 49-20 rout of Ohio State.

Now Blough is lost in the crowd as the No. 4 quarterback in Browns training camp. On Sunday, Blough resurfaced ... literally in the crowd.

Practice was off to a sleepy start when someone behind the gallery ropes saying, “Why is it so quiet?

As if on cue, out of the blue, at the end of a drill, Blough sprinted toward the crowd and commenced to slap every hand he could find among fans perched at field level.

“Let’s go!” the rookie yelled. “We need some!”

Blough then ran to the east grandstand, climbed the access stairs, and ran all along the first row yelling and waving his hands. He was a major hit with the capacity crowd.

Not so much with a coach who was looking for him to be in the next drill.

“David!!!”

A memorable chance taken by a player with nothing to lose? It may have been a simple case of rookie hazing. Earlier, rookie offensive lineman Drew Forbes ran into the stands.

• The biggest roar of the day followed a long touchdown run by Nick Chubb. Playing against a defense armed in full pads and authorized for some contact, Chubb got to the line in a hurry, made a cut, and took off.

Defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson pointed out the defense wasn’t practicing game-like mayhem, but he said it was a legit reflection of Chubb’s talent.

“We got gashed,” Richardson said. “Chubb made an excellent move.”

• Chubb’s strong practice included another breakaway later. The most notable aspect of the second one might have been defensive end Myles Garrett looking as fast as the running back in pursuit.

• Baker Mayfield dodged the initial rush, stepped up in the pocket, and was still moving when he unleashed a pretty missile deep down the right sideline.

Odell Beckham seemed to have a chance to make a circus catch. Rookie Greedy Williams applied tight coverage and made the attempt more difficult.

• The entire team had to run sprints as punishment for two players getting into a post-play scrap. There were three rounds of gassers. Beckham took them seriously and was the first to finish two of his three sprints.

• Linebacker Adarius Taylor is a sixth-year pro who knows the ropes on special teams. During an onside kick drill, Taylor looked the ball into his hands and fell to the ground while tucking and cradling the football, facing away from the kickoff team.

“That’s good football!” special teams coordinator Mike Priefer yelled across the field.

• Backup running back Dontrell Hilliard turned some heads with his burst on one inside run, prompting David Njoku, who wasn’t in on the play, to celebrate with a Ray Lewis-style air kick.

Moments later, with the ones on, Njoku sprinted into a seam and gathered in a 25-yard completion from Mayfield.

• D’Ernest Johnson, a 23-year speedster out of South Florida, is trying to make an impression as a kick returner. He was a sensational return man going back to his high school days in Immokalee, Fla.

The crowd groaned when he bobbled and dropped a short kickoff early in practice.

• Antonio Callaway shows gliding speed during his kick-return chances. He has a knack for looking as if he is trying to run through a tackler only to make a tricky cut at the last split second.

While at Florida, Callaway scored twice on punt returns in 2015 and once on a kick return in 2016.

• Last year, when somebody yelled “Juice,” it usually was associated with Hard Knocks star Devon Cajuste. Now it seems everyone is calling second-year Brown Jarvis Landry by his nickname, “Juice.”

Landry opened one 11-on-11 set with a nice deep catch from Mayfield. He took an awkward fall while trying to make a sharp cut, but quickly got up and sprinted back to the huddle.

MONDAY’S SCHEDULE: Practice from 10 a.m.-noon

--Long runs in TC are hard to judge because guys aren't really tackling.

--Landry never catches anything other than "2 yard bombs."

--Nice to see OBJ winning 2 of the 3 gassers.

--Not sure if his coaches liked it, but I thought the story about the backup qb from Purdue was pretty cool. grin

Browns Camp Notes: Tackling takes center stage

Right guard race still tight, no movement on Duke Johnson front

https://923thefan.radio.com/articles/tackling-focus-freddie-kitchens-cleveland-browns-training-camp

Berea, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – Tackling is a football fundamental that has avoided the Browns in recent years, but head coach Freddie Kitchens and his staff are out to change that.

Pro Football Focus ranked the Browns dead last in tackling last year and over the last five seasons the team is ranked among the worst according to the publication.

With a new defensive staff under coordinator Steve Wilks focused on fundamentals, Kitchens expects vast improvements in 2019.

“We are putting the time in to do it,” Kitchens said following Monday’s practice. “I think we were a better tackling team today as far as guys are continuing to learn how to practice. In this league, sometimes you go a long time without knowing how to practice. Everybody likes to run plays and everybody likes to make their checks and make their calls and make their alignments. A bunch of that stuff is to make the coaches feel like they are doing something, but at the end of the day, the game is about blocking and tackling.

“If you can do the blocking but you can’t do the tackling, you are going to beat. If you can do the tackling but not the blocking, you are going to get beat. We are going to be a better blocking and tackling team. That is what we are stressing in our individual periods. That is what we are stressing on tape. That is what we expect to get on the field.”

Kitchens’ assistant coaches spend significant amounts of time during individual and positional drills daily teaching and emphasizing the fundamentals of leverage, body control, wrapping up and taking a opponent down.

“We are working on it every single day,” linebackers coach and run game coordinator Al Holcomb said Monday. “Our angles to the ball, leverage in the football, knowing and understanding where our help is in terms of tackling.

“A lot of times when guys miss tackles, you see them breaking down far too far away from the ball carrier. We have to continue to take the grass, close the distance and when we arrive, we have to have good fundamentals and form tackling.”

Linebacker Joe Schobert, who enters the final year of his contract, led the league in missed tackles in 2018, a feat he does not expect to repeat in 2019.

“When everybody’s doing their job, it’s going to be a good defense and there aren’t going to be a lot of missed tackles,” Schobert said.

Schobert, along with fellow linebacker Christian Kirksey, should benefit significantly with the additions of Olivier Vernon and Sheldon Richardson up front and the 4-2-5 scheme Wilks is running.

“I did my job fitting my fit in probably a second or a second and a half and the buck was already tackled on two of the three plays,” Schobert said. “Myles was in the backfield, Larry O (Ogunjobi) – those guys are just blowing up plays and that is going to make it easy for us because offensive lines are going to have to focus and double on them, get the linebackers over the top and squeeze them through holes and make plays on the ball.”

Tight race – The right guard competition does not have a leader and the rotation at the position continues.

On Monday Kyle Kalis started at right guard, Austin Corbett was the No. 2 center and Eric Kush was the backup right guard and none of them have taken control of the competition.

“I wish one was, but I want them to compete,” Kitchens said. “We’re not ready to name a starting (right) guard.”

In the hause – Drew and Jason Rosenhaus, who represent running back Duke Johnson, were in Berea Monday.

They spoke with Browns GM john Dorsey and assistant GM Eliot Wolfe in the VIP tent prior to practice and vice president of player personnel Alonzo Highsmith on the field.

Johnson, who has requested a trade, has been sidelined the past few days with a hamstring injury but there doesn’t appear to be much movement and likely won’t be anytime soon Again, the Browns aren’t going to cut or just give Johnson away.

Frightening flashback – Jarvis Landry ran out of the locker room and onto the practice field barefoot holding his socks and cleats in his hands Monday morning.

The scene conjured up memories of the 2008 Browns camp when receiver Braylon Edwards was horsing around late in practice barefoot and got stepped on by fellow receiver Donte Stallworth. Edwards suffered a cut on his heel and required stitches. The incident produced one of the more memorable and colorful quotes in the expansion era from then head coach Romeo Crennel.

“Kids are kids,” Crennel said. “You look at kids, they take their shoes off and run around all the time.”

Shaken up – Tight end Seth DeValve appeared to get banged up late in practice on a deep ball from Drew Stanton that fell incomplete.

As the ball hit the ground, rookie safety Sheldrick Redwine collided with DeValve and his right shoulder appeared to hit the tight end left shoulder-neck-and head area.

Kitchens did not have an update on DeValve following practice.

Puppy pound counter – 3 puppies were adopted Monday and 39 through two practices. The partnership with the Northeast Ohio Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is in its fifth year and since its inception in 2015 has seen a total of 399 puppies find homes during Browns training camps.

Injury report – RB Trayone Gray (calf-NFI) and RB Kareem Hunt (groin-NFI), WR Damion Ratley (right hamstring), RB Duke Johnson (right hamstring), Edge Genard Avery (ankle), DB Donnie Lewis Jr. (foot) did not practice.

Up next – No practice Tuesday. Next practice Wednesday 10-noon.

Fresh Takes: Observations from Day 5 of Browns training camp

https://www.clevelandbrowns.com/news/fre...medium=referral

Monday brought us a new week and our fifth straight day of practice in Berea.

It was a hot one, but the play on the field wasn't burning as much as it was smoldering. Here are our five observations from Day 5 of #BrownsCamp.

1. Bring on the break
Day 5 was also the fifth day of practice in a row for these Browns, who have worked in pads for the last three of those days. It was 85 degrees in Berea in the middle of practice Monday, and it was evident a day off was needed.

Luckily, that's exactly what the schedule calls for with Tuesday's break.

Practice was punctual, but wasn't nearly as crisp as earlier sessions in the week. Targets all over the field dropped passes, ranging from starters to third-teamers. Blocking assignments were missed, and coaches were upset. Odell Beckham Jr. and Olivier Vernon did minimal work before spending most of the practice standing alongside their teammates. Hitting was also toned down until the final periods of practice, though head coach Freddie Kitchens said afterward that wasn't by design.

It was a bit of a sleepy practice, with the fans only getting active a few times. Jamie Gillan sent a punt deep that drew oohs, and some near-highlights got fans excited, but overall, it seemed as though they, too, needed a day off.

They'll get that Tuesday.

2. Takitaki speaking with his words ... and actions
Sione Takitaki rubbed some players the wrong way early in practice when it became evident he didn't know *how* to practice without full pads. He definitely irked Duke Johnson when he attempted to wrap him up with his facemask on the first day.

"I'm a high-energy guy, so I just go out there and try to talk stuff and do everything right," Takitaki explained. ... "I kinda got chippy, but that's just me being a rookie not understanding what the NFL is and coming out here and practicing right."

Four days later, Takitaki is a making his name known for the right reasons.

You'll likely hear him before you see him. He's the man in the middle with the second unit, making all of the calls, flying around the field and tackling the ball carrier before letting out a yell or two. On Monday, he was there early and often, carving out space in the consciousness of everyone observing.

"He's gonna run around, he's gonna talk, he's a high-energy guy, he's out there making plays," linebacker Christian Kirksey said Monday. "I like Taki, man. He's gonna be a guy that just gets the team riled up. He's a young rookie but he has a lot of energy. It's good to see him go out there and make plays."

He also took up some space in the heads of the offensive staff when he blitzed on a pass later in practice and flattened D'Ernest Johnson, who had stepped up into the hole to attempt to block. Running backs coach Stump Mitchell had some choice words for Takitaki after the play.

"It's football. Guys want to talk back and have fun," Kirksey said of the interaction. "I think (Takitaki) made a great play out there and the running backs coach was like 'you know what, let's talk some trash.' So it was all friendly fire ... that means we're doing something good."

This team had a clear need at linebacker as it entered the draft, and Takitaki looks to have what it takes to fill a depth need, if not eventually ascend into the starting role. He's the perfect type to focus on once the pads come on, and so far, he's proving to be true to his film.

3. Willies keeps on keepin' on
We've discussed the back end of the receiving corps plenty and haven't come near a consensus on who might fill out the final two spots on the roster. That's not unusual at this point in a camp, but Derrick Willies is making a strong case for one of the jobs.

Willies is a quiet individual, but at 6-foot-4, he's still tough to miss. Quarterbacks in this Browns camp aren't having a tough time finding him, and he's reciprocating, catching everything near him. He snagged a touchdown pass on a drag route run during an early red-zone period Monday. He's also a reliable special teamer and would fit such a role on this team, too.

Fans might forget Willies was in line to be the No. 3 receiver entering Week 6 last season before he suffered a broken collarbone that effectively ended his campaign. He seems to be building off that momentum left on the field in 2018.

There's only one player who might have had a stronger start to camp, and we'll discuss him in the next point.

4. No backs? No problem
Nick Chubb talked earlier in camp about how he had to mentally prepare himself to shoulder a heavier load after Kareem Hunt and Duke Johnson were both sidelined with minor injuries. He's doing an excellent job of it.

On a rough day for the offense (much of which being caused by Myles Garrett's pressures and a lack of effective blocking up front), Chubb again found space to make plays. He got the crowd going when he caught a well-timed screen on the left side and weaved through his convoy of linemen for a touchdown, and he managed to rip off a few lengthy runs afterward.

Chubb's place on this team is intriguing because he's not a loud person. He doesn't allow many people into his circle of trust. It takes a bit to get something out of him.

But while he isn't a vocal leader, he's doing everything right on the field. He's the most consistent player on this team through five days of camp, and if it serves as any indication, he'll pick right up where he left off at the end of 2018.

5. Callaway getting his feet under him

For the first few practices of camp, Antonio Callaway hummed under the radar.

He didn't receive a single rep with the first team until Day 4 of camp and wasn't in position to make a memorable play until Sunday. If Monday is any indication, it appears as if Callaway is starting to get his feet under him.

Callaway ran largely with the second team again Monday, but he took advantage of his opportunities. The wideout made a pair of nice grabs on slant and out routes, found the end zone on an end-around reverse during a red zone period and managed to snag a pass while Greedy Williams was draped over him along the sideline. He's also been receiving kicks at a position at which most expect him to compete for a job.

"He's doing good. He's doing what's expected of him," Kitchens said Monday of Callaway. ... "We're a long way away, but he's going to be one of (the team's punt returners)."

There aren't any viral highlights associated with Callaway, but it's encouraging to see him get into the mix.

Inside Browns camp: New optimism and expectations, Baker Mayfield's verbal sparring, a potential trouble spot and more
Here's everything you need to know about the scene in Berea as the Browns get ready for 2019

BEREA, Ohio – Signs of life and hope and progress and optimism abound all around the Cleveland Browns practice facility.

Myles Garrett, a potential Defensive MVP candidate, was playing catch with young fans in the stands between drills at Sunday's practice, Odell Beckham Jr., a potential Offensive MVP candidate, gave his cleats to some youngsters after individual drills and quarterback David Blough – okay, I admit I have no idea who this rookie out of Purdue is and he is not going to make the team – was literally sprinting through the stands in full uniform at one point leading the diehards in cheers they were ever-so-eager to follow.

The Browns are back.

The moribund Hue Jackson era seems long gone (it featured three wins in roughly three years), the promise of Baker Mayfield and a new day was fulfilled as the Browns went an previously-unfathomable 5-2 down the stretch, including pushing eventual AFC North champ Baltimore to the limit on the road in Week 17. I expect the Browns to pick up where they left off, and to seriously challenge for the AFC North title.

If the Browns had a modicum of head coaching acumen before turning things over to interim Gregg Williams at midseason, or had a decent kicker for much of the season or had started Mayfield from Day One, they very well could have been in the postseason a year ago. Now, after a series of huge acquisitions – OBJ, Sheldon Richardson, Olivier Vernon and what could be another hotshot draft class, too – expectations are high, and with actual football games upon us and the bright lights of all those prime-time kickoffs creeping closer, this franchise is trying to manage the hype, harness expectations and not get caught up in all of the hoopla.

"We're trying to stay in the moment," as rookie head coach Freddie Kitchens, who served as offensive coordinator after Jackson was fired and Williams promoted to interim HC last season, put it.

Everyone seems a little restless about reliving the turnaround of 2018, as it insures nothing for this season and, well, all the clichés apply (games are not won on paper/you can't win a Super Bowl in July/you are what your record says you are) and 7-8-1 last year wasn't enough to get to the postseason.

"I don't care about last year anymore," Kitchens said at one point Sunday, echoing sentiments his owners had expressed a few minutes earlier at their media availability. Asked if the playoffs should be the expectation, owner Jimmy Haslam responded: "I think that's unfair." They strained not to project much about the future and preached the mantra of one practice at a time. "Clearly it looks like we put together a good team, but everyone is focused on getting better today," Haslam said, and later offered: "Enough talk. We've got to go out and win games now."

The players seem to be enjoying the new vibes around the team, and receiver Jarvis Landry, who was talking Super Bowl a year ago, isn't backing down now. "That's our goal," he reiterated.

I joked with Garrett about the Browns becoming America's Team. "We just want to be Cleveland's team right now," Garrett said. "That's where we are. These fans have loved and supported us through all of these years, and whoever else comes on with us, we're going to appreciate."

Left tackle a spot to monitor

Despite all of GM John Dorsey's shrewd moves – his applause walking to the practice field Sunday as loud as almost any player's, for good reason – you have to wonder a bit about the left tackle spot. Greg Robinson, a former top pick, has held his own early in camp for the most part, and the front office believes he can do the job … but if he falters, expect a proactive response from an aggressive GM. Facing Garrett everyday should help, though at times it's not going to look pretty on the practice field. I'd put Browns left tackle up there with Texans left tackle and Steelers No. 2 WR and Bears kicker as some of the most important roster spots to monitor the entire preseason.

Kicker taken in fifth round struggling
Speaking of kickers, fifth-round pick Austin Seibert is not off to a great start in his first camp. He was only one-for-four on Sunday and had missed half his kicks to that point early in camp. Greg Joseph is a holdover from a year ago, but when you draft a kicker, you expect him to win the job. "Hopefully he comes out tomorrow and does better," Kitchens said.

Verbal sparring between Mayfield, defense

Garrett told me the defense loves some of the verbal sparring that goes on with Mayfield during practice, especially a spirited full-pad session like Sunday. "Oh man, he gets hype," Garrett said, "and we just have that mentality to shut him up. You can't start talking if you ain't making plays. So you know if he is getting like that and getting fired up, he's either mad, or he's throwing darts on you. So you've got to take that away from him. To his credit he's a great player and we've seen it and we're just seeing the beginning." Chubb said the offense feeds off that intensity. "He has great energy, he leads the team," Chubb said. I'd pencil Mayfield in for at least 32 touchdowns and a top 10 passer rating.

More notes from Browns camp

Don't hold your breath for a Duke Johnson trade anytime soon. Maybe around the midseason trade deadline, if the team is in great health and Hunt is still on track to return. But this club is about having as much veteran depth as possible right now.

Would not be surprised at all if Kareem Hunt is recovered from his groin injury by midweek and back at practice. The Browns are still negotiating with the league about allowing him to remain with the team during his eight-game suspension for striking a female outside his apartment last year, Jimmy Haslam said. Dee Haslam noted how much hard work he will have to continue putting in off the field to walk the right path. Hunt, who looked explosive in spring practices, has clearly been embraced by his teammates. "That's my boy," said second-year running back Nick Chubb, who stands to lose some work when Hunt returns. "Kareem, he is really cool. He came in and we hit it off right away. Just picking up the playbook and having fun. He's a lot of fun to be around."

Rookie Greedy Williams is earning rave reviews early. He may have fallen far in the draft after being projected a top-10 pick at one point, but his transition to his zone duties seems smooth and he had several nice breakups Sunday going against starting receivers. Dorsey's work drafting corners has been superb.

The Browns may have the biggest tight end group I have ever seen. Seth DeValve, at 6-3, is dwarfed by David Njoku (6-4) and Pharaoh Brown (6-6) and then they added Demetrius Harris (6-7) as a free agent this year. Watching them work 11-on-11 in the red zone -- with Landry and OBJ underneath and Harris and Njoku working the back of the end zone, and Chubb running in spread formations -- options abounded for Mayfield.

Hiring Todd Monken as offensive coordinator will prove to be one of the best moves of the entire offseason. He provides a tremendous sounding board and resource for Kitchens – who is calling the offense but could get spread thin by the other requirements of the job. Monken was a finalist for head coaching jobs a year ago and I would be shocked if he is not running his own team in 2020. His work in Tampa did not go unnoticed.

Kitchens quickly broke up a skirmish Sunday involving largely backups and then made the entire team run laps. It was a minor flare-up but would have drawn penalty flags in a game, which clearly perturbs him. "We just don't practice penalties," he said, adding, "If we do something wrong on the field there are consequences."

Former AAF quarterback Garrett Gilbert looks intriguing. He received abundant reps on Sunday with Drew Stanton getting a veteran's day off and made some nice throws and has looked the part thus far of a guy who could at least hold a clipboard in the NFL.

The tackling thing is kinda tough considering they don't really tackle in practice. They try to wrap up, which means you decelerate before you reach the guy. That is not a good practice habit.

What we’ve learned through the first 5 practices of Browns camp

Competitions heat up with no clear leaders for jobs

CATEGORIES: Browns Training Camp NFL Browns
Berea, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – After five physical and grueling practices, the Browns get a breather on Tuesday with their first day off.

While it’s entirely too premature to make any declarations or start fitting guys for rings this early in camp, we’ve learned a few things.

First and foremost, all the questions and talk about whether Freddie Kitchens can handle the big personalities was a waste of hot air. Kitchens has been in command demanding accountability, teamwork and leadership from his players. Whether it’s making players run for lack of focus penalties or fighting or putting his arm around someone after they didn’t make a play, Kitchens clearly has this. Don’t let his folksy southern charm fool you. He just doesn’t need to shout profanities across the field to demonstrate the quality of coach that he is.

The defensive line is as good on the field as it looks on paper. Baker Mayfield needs a traffic cop in the backfield it’s been so busy, and that’s OK according to Kitchens. Myles Garrett, Olivier Vernon, Sheldon Richardson and Larry Ogunjobi have spent significant time collapsing the pocket through the first five practices. Kitchens views that as a positive about the defensive front rather than a negative towards the offensive line.

Mayfield looks comfortable as he begins his sophomore season and his teammates treat him like a seasoned veteran. Although the offense hasn’t dominated camp – defenses tend to look like they’re a step ahead this time of year anyway an that’s the case this year – we’ve seen glimpses of how prolific, electric and downright fun this offense can be with No. 6 running the show.

Sure, it’s only five practices but my goodness is Odell Beckham Jr. good. Any description of him as a receiver is a disservice to his talent. He might be the best football player we’ve watched in decades. Not only does Beckham catch everything – and we do mean everything – with ease but he just glides across the field. He’s also an engaging and generous superstar signing autographs and even giving his cleats away to kids attending camp. Whatever issues there were in New York, we’ve yet to see a single red flag with him.

Running back Nick Chubb appears to have two gears running the football – fast and faster. He’s gotten to the edge a couple of times during run drills and his acceleration in open space is impressive.

Tight end David Njoku is still searching for that level of consistency as he enters his third season and the Browns are hoping he finds it. Kitchens likes to say his players “aren’t a finished product” but that phrase, which he also used to describe Njoku, seems to have extra meaning here. Njoku should benefit from having Jarvis Landry, Beckham and Chubb commanding most of the attention from opposing defenses but it seems for every good play Njoku makes, there’s one that leaves you scratching you head in frustration.

Antonio Callaway has been taking his reps recently with the No. 3 offense with a few second-team reps mixed in. Callaway is also in the punt return rotation and the expectation is for him to be used there this season, the question is, how often?

Myles Garrett right now is on another level. As impossible as it sounds, Garrett looks faster and stronger than before. He practices like a man possessed – and to a degree he is. Garrett has been abusing both tackles – Greg Robinson and Chris Hubbard in camp. With his sights set on defensive player of the year in his third season, Garrett looks the part.

The right guard job is a tossup, and no one has taken the lead. Austin Corbett, Kyle Kalis and Eric Kush continue to rotate at right guard, the No. 2 center and backup right guard. Not only is a starting job up for grabs but the backup interior lineman is as well and both competitions could go down to the wire in August.

While most of the focus is on right guard in camp, Hubbard and Robinson bear watching in the preseason as well.

We felt entering camp that Dontrell Hilliard would make the team as the third active running back and we’ve observed nothing in the last week to change our minds. Hilliard, who also has been returning kicks, continues to make plays when opportunities present themselves.

Veteran Terrance Mitchell has gotten most of the starting reps opposite Denzel Ward at corner, but it shouldn’t take long for Greedy Williams to find himself with the ones regularly. Williams, who has held his own going up against Beckham when called upon, continues to look like a top-10 draft pick in camp. And to think John Dorsey got him in the second round at 46.

While we’ve penciled Morgan Burnett in as the starting strong safety next to Damarious Randall, Jermaine Whitehead is having a strong camp. Whitehead continues to get reps with the first-team defense in Steve Wilks’ 4-2-5 alignment that includes a three-safety nickel.

The kicking job has been the most disappointing competition of camp to date. Greg Joseph is 8-9 in team work, with his lone miss coming following a two-minute drill game-winning situation from 45-plus, but those are the kicks the Browns absolutely must have made this year. Rookie Austin Seibert has been miserable. Overall, he’s 4-9 in team drills but his misses haven’t been close and one of those makes was a Bankshot off the left upright. The fifth-round pick essentially spent his college career kicking extra points and short field goals for Oklahoma. Regardless of his leg strength, his accuracy leaves a lot to be desired. There’s a lot of camp and the entire preseason to go but Dorsey may be shopping for a kicker on Sept. 1.

We’re giving Britton Colquitt the edge over Jamie Gillan – AKA the Scottish Hammer – in the punting competition. Colquitt is a seasoned veteran while Gillan continues to work on the finer points of punting that are required beyond just having a canon for a leg, and Gillan can boom balls – he almost took out a drone over the weekend. What he’s learning is how to work the coffin corner, drop punts inside the 5 and hold on placekicks. With so much at stake this season, the Browns can’t afford special teams miscues and they risk them with Gillan.

Sounds like our kicking/punting duties will remain the same as last year

I also like hearing that Myles looks more improved ... that’s kinda scary for other teams T’s

Head coach Freddie Kitchens addressed the media after training camp day 5 in Berea, Ohio. He discussed Baker Mayfield, what he is confident about thus far in training camp, and how competition makes everybody better.

Now that Kitchens is seating in 'the' seat, he's getting more of it from Dorsey to protect his prized possessions. As a position coach, I'm sure Kitchens was not privy to those type of conversations. As a HC, I'm sure he is, and may be more understanding of why previous leadership may have did things a certain way.

I believe Freddie's issue on Hard Knocks was them not dressing, doing individual drills, and being with their teammates on the sidelines doing mental reps as opposed to being excused for the day. I believe this is what Freddie is having them do.

Cleveland Browns Depth Chart: Biggest surprises and questions after five days of camp
By Jake Burn

https://expo.cleveland.com/sports/g66l-2...ys-of-camp.html

BEREA, Ohio -- Navigating the depth chart of a 90-man roster is a challenging chore in training camp. The Browns have yet to put out an official chart, but we can get a rough idea of how the roster is shaping up.

Offense depth chart
Defense depth chart

With any camp, there will be those who shoot up the depth chart, and those who slide down. That has been no different for the Browns.

Cuts will begin to trickle in between now and late August, but let's see who exactly has caught the eye during training camp's first five days.

FAST RISERS
Offense: Derrick Willies came into camp fighting for the fifth or sixth wide receiver spots, but he has put on a show of consistency that has him finding first-team reps. The rangy receiver runs well, gets in and out of cuts with efficiency, and is consistent at the catch point. The Browns love his ability as a gunner on special teams, and with his improved wide receiver play he has a chance for meaningful snaps in 2019.

Defense: Danny Ekuale has entrenched himself as a big part of the defensive line rotation. He has worked his way into backing up Larry Ogunjobi at the shade (1-technique) position. He plays with high energy and sound leverage. If Ekuale can give the Browns 15 to 20 good snaps a game, it will soften the blow of missing out on Gerald McCoy and Mike Daniels.

LOST IN THE SHUFFLE
Offense: Antonio Callaway came into training camp with high expectations from productive OTAs and minicamp. However, we have yet to see Callaway break out in camp, and he has been consistently buried on the depth chart. He is mainly getting second- and third-team reps. The Browns are comfortable with Odell Beckham Jr., Jarvis Landry, and Rashard Higgins, but they will be counting on Callaway at some point in 2019. It's early in the process and he will likely come out of this funk, but he has yet to earn any serious reps in team sessions with quarterback Baker Mayfield.

Defense: Eric Murray arrived in the Emmanuel Ogbah trade with a full array of skills at strong safety. He has the ability to line up all over a defensive backfield, and can even play nickel cornerback. The Browns are using Murray all over, but nearly all of his reps have come with the second team. Murray had a nice interception return for a touchdown on Day 3, but for the most part has been quiet in camp. Murray seems to trail Morgan Burnett and Jermaine Whitehead, but he will have his chance to impress in the preseason.

POSITION BATTLES
Right Guard: The rotation has been consistent between Austin Corbett, Eric Kush and Kyle Kalis. One player will spend an entire day at the position, then the next day reveals a different player in the spot. When not at right guard, the other two rotate at backup center. Freddie Kitchens said Monday that there is no clear leader yet, and each player will keep getting reps. Expect this one to go right up until the Sept. 8 opener.

Cornerback: Greedy Williams had earned first-team reps in OTAs and minicamp and many expected him to roll into camp with the first team. However, Terrance Mitchell has taken those snaps and is holding down the spot opposite Denzel Ward in three cornerback alignments. When the Browns have a safety in the game during "Big Nickel" personnel packages, T.J. Carrie slides outside opposite Ward. Williams has received the occasional first-team rep, and has battled Odell Beckham Jr. as well as anyone in camp, but the role has not been given to him. This battle might go into late preseason.

ON THE BUBBLE
Offense: Damion Ratley had a solid first day, but hurt his left leg and has been idle since then. In his time away, Willies, Blake Jackson and Jaelen Strong have all had solid showings. Injuries happen, and it doesn't change Ratley's talent. Yet, with so few opportunities and a plethora of talented wide receivers, if Ratley can't find the field soon his roster spot is in jeopardy.

Defense: Chad Thomas had an underwhelming rookie season as a third-round selection in the 2018 draft. His performance in camp has been underwhelming, lacking quick twitch moves needed at end or the strength to play through opposing tackles. The position is full of talented players in Genard Avery, Chris Smith and Anthony Zettel backing up Myles Garrett and Olivier Vernon. Thomas didn't do himself any favors with his fight during the fourth day of camp that forced Kitchens to make the entire team run.

Browns Camp Happenings (Day 6): Greedy Williams experiences good and bad with starters

Posted Jul 31, 2019 at 4:18 PM
Updated Jul 31, 2019 at 4:18 PM

BROWNS CAMP HAPPENINGS

Rookie cornerback Greedy Williams made an impressive tackle Wednesday during the sixth practice of Browns training camp. But later, he forgot to touch an opponent down, surrendering a touchdown as a result.

"One [of those plays] was good and one of them was bad," coach Freddie Kitchens said.

The good happened when Williams tackled running back Nick Chubb to the ground near the line of scrimmage in an 11-on-11 period. One of the knocks against Williams at Louisiana State University was poor tackling late in his career.

"I don't have a doubt that Greedy is going to tackle," Kitchens said. "Our corners have to tackle. A lot of times, people want to run on corners in the run game. I hope they do because our corners are going to tackle."

The bad occurred when wide receiver Rashard Higgins caught a Baker Mayfield pass against Williams, and Williams neglected to touch Higgins while he was on the ground. Mayfield urged Higgins to get up and score. Kitchens reminded Williams he's not at LSU anymore.

"These guys have been playing football their whole life, and they never had to touch somebody once he's on the ground," Kitchens said. "It's just a learning process."

Williams has had more good moments than bad ones. He started camp on the second-team defense but practiced opposite Pro Bowl cornerback Denzel Ward in the base scheme Wednesday. It was the first time Williams, a second-round draft pick, held the role since camp opened last week. TJ Carrie previously served as the No. 2 corner.

• Nose tackle Larry Ogunjobi sat out team drills late in practice. "More of it was preventive," Kitchens said. "He started feeling a little something, and we just wanted to take care of him." Receiver Jaelen Strong left practice with an undisclosed injury.

• Defensive ends Olivier Vernon (hamstring) and Chad Thomas (illness) and tight end Seth DeValve (concussion) were idle for the first time this camp. The following players remained out due to injury: defensive end/linebacker Genard Avery (ankle), running backs Kareem Hunt (groin), Duke Johnson (hamstring) and Trayone Gray (calf), cornerback Donnie Lewis Jr. (foot) and receiver Damion Ratley (hamstring).

Browns asking for consistency from Antonio Callaway

Charean Williams

Antonio Callaway has spent training camp practicing with the second- and third-team, even when Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry have taken veterans’ days off. Only after Jaelen Strong left with an athletic trainer Wednesday did Callaway finally get some work with the ones.

“What we ask of everybody is consistency,’’ Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield said Wednesday, via Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. “We don’t want to be a rollercoaster team. You don’t want to be up and down. And I’m not saying that Callaway’s doing that every day, but we’ve got to be able to have guys that rotate and play different spots, and we’re working him at a couple of different spots.

“We’re expecting a lot out of those guys, and that’s the great part about it right now and so Callaway’s progressing very nicely.’’

Callaway has said he wants 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns this season, which, with Landry and Beckham on the roster, seems unlikely. Still, it’s good to have goals.

The Browns insist they still believe in the fourth-round 2018 pick, but Callaway will have to work for everything he gets.

“I think everybody understands who our starting receivers are, OK?’’ Browns coach Freddie Kitchens said. “Everybody else is competing, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart. We do not have one depth chart in our room anywhere. I don’t care who’s in there. I just want them competing. I don’t care if you have three wide receivers Baker has never thrown to or Jarvis, Odell and Hig [Rashard Higgins] and Callaway. I don’t care.’’

Coach has said that about every player, so why would it be any different for Callaway?

I think people are to quick to make judgements prematurely about players one way or the other.

Coach wasn’t the one I was alluding to; Baker is the one who said it. It was the first thing he instinctively answered about Callaway’s camp thus far.

The NFL is a learning process and Calloway throughout his career didn't have to rely on his learning abilities because of his raw talent...I do blame his coaching staff in HS and college.

So now he is a slow learner but it will come he will GET IT hopefully by the time his 2nd contract roles around cause we will need him to take the place of Landry or OBJ. As long as he keeps on growing. Right now his confidence and attitude is what worries me, I hope he continues to work hard for his goals.

Posted By: PrplPplEater Re: 2019 Browns Training Camp - 08/01/19 02:40 PM
This is where the off-field value of ViceGrips and OBJ comes in. They set the example on work ethic - how to study, how to practice, how to run routes, how to do the extra work needed to perfect your craft, etc... and if some of the absolute best at the position are doing it, you can bet that you need to do it, too.

This is how and where culture gets built.

Agree 100% ... only part u left out is the desire of the students to “drink the water” ... thats huge and so far KJ has been spot on with that ...

We have plenty of leaders on the side of the ball ... who are our leaders on D ... anyone know?

Shobert I guess ...
Posted By: eotab Re: 2019 Browns Training Camp - 08/01/19 03:12 PM
Kirksey has always been a vocal leader so to say.
Garrett is a silent leader if you know what I mean but he leads in the Gym and pulls others up in conditioning.

Richardson I think has taken on a Leadership role and seems to be connecting with players.

Also Larry if you read him is a vocal leader in the Gym on the field and lockeroom. the DBs...the only guy that comes to mind is Randall but they are not talked about much you would think Mitchell would be as well but who knows.

Our D is going to surprise the NFL!!! wink

ANTONIO CALLAWAY
WR, CLEVELAND BROWNS

Speaking Thursday, Browns coach Freddie Kitchens said Antonio Callaway reported to camp out of shape.

Per Kitchens, Callaway "needed pushing." He apparently had his best practice of camp on Thursday. Kitchens' words come two days after the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported that Callaway had "consistently been part of the second team." We now know why. It's surprising after Callaway drew strong reviews for his work in OTAs. Callaway is still the clear favorite for No. 3 duties behind Odell Beckham and Jarvis Landry.

Browns Camp Notes: The Orange and Brown scrimmage
Baker Mayfield says “We have a long way to go execution-wise”

https://923thefan.radio.com/articles/baker-mayfield-cleveland-browns-execution-room-improvement

Cleveland, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – Freddie Kitchens didn’t change much up for the Orange and Brown scrimmage Saturday night.

Other than 10 times the number of fans watching and the venue, it was just another afternoon of work for Kitchens and the Browns as they continue preparations for the most highly anticipated season in over a decade.

“I thought these guys did a great job of staying in the moment and competing,” Kitchens said. “We were sloppy at times and all that, but let me tell you, this group that we have, they are going to compete. If we will compete every day and every snap, we will have a chance.”

Baker Mayfield threw a 23-yard touchdown to tight end Pharaoh Brown, Myles Garrett could’ve planted Mayfield multiple times, Drew Stanton threw a TD to Rashard Higgins and Greg Joseph drilled a 51-yard field goal to cap an eight-play drive.

“Any time you step on this field it needs to be a different type of energy,” Mayfield said of getting to work at the stadium. “We felt that today.”

It wasn’t a perfect afternoon for Mayfield and the first-team offense.

Mayfield had a nice 16-yard run on a roll out to the left, completed a 19-yard pass over the middle to Odell Beckham Jr., who made himself at home by barking with fans, but the drive eventually stalled leading to Joseph’s long kick.

Another series fizzled with a four-and out. Cornerback Terrance Mitchell broke up a sideline pass to Jarvis Landry on first down and Mayfield was unable to convert a throw to Landry on fourth down.

“We have a long way to go execution-wise,” Mayfield said.

Kicking update – Greg Joseph made all five of his tries, including a long of 48 in the field goal 11-on-11 series. Austin Seibert went 3-for-5. He had back-to-back misses from 43 and 46 which drew a few boo birds.

In addition to Joseph’s 51-yarder, Seibert ended the practice with a 38-yard kick right down the middle.

While it appears that Joseph is clearly in the lead, Kitchens declined to pick a leader in the competition.

“We will evaluate that. We are a long way from that,” Kitchens said. “We truly are. What if the next one comes out tomorrow and the other one misses them all and the other one makes them? We are just strictly day by day until we have to decide.”

Right guard rotation continues – The rotation at right guard continues as the Browns have yet to have back-to-back practices with the same player at the position with the first team offense.

Saturday was Eric Kush’s turn and Mayfield isn’t worried about the competition having any negative effects leading into the season.

“Greg Robinson was not playing until weeks into the season last year,” Mayfield said. “Whatever group we decide is the final one is going to be a great one because they are going to show how resilient they are. Stuff happens along the way in the season. Guys getting reps with the first team is not a bad thing right now. Rotating in and just knowing what is expected and the standards.”

Local addition – The Browns signed defensive tackle Tracy Sprinkle on Saturday.

The name might look familiar, and it should. Sprinkle is an Elyria, Ohio native that starred at Elyria High School and Ohio State.

To make room, cornerback Jermaine Ponder was waived.

New digs – The Browns locker room at FirstEnergy Stadium got a makeover this offseason including new lockers, lighting and carpet.

“We just felt it was time for an upgrade,” Browns executive vice president JW Johnson told 92.3 The Fan after the scrimmage. “We put new carpet in there, new lockers, some better lighting and opened it up a little bit so it’s got a little more flow. I think the guys like it. I asked Myles and he said, ‘hey it looks good.’ So we’re not totally done yet but by the time the season starts it’ll be ready to go, but it was nice to give it a little bit of a facelift.”

For the kids – The Browns say they sold 37,686 tickets to the Orange & Brown Scrimmage Saturday meaning the team raised at least $188,430 which goes towards the Cleveland Browns Foundation’s Get 2 School, Stay in the Game! Program which focuses on eliminating chronic absenteeism for kids.

“I wanted to tell you how proud I am of the support that we had today because all these proceeds go to something our organization really believes in,” Kitchens said, “The ‘Get 2 School’ program, and 100 percent from the ticket sales goes to that and this a tremendous start for that.”

The team will continue to donate all stadium Pro Shop proceeds to the Cleveland Browns Foundation as well which they began doing in 2017.

Injury report – RB Trayone Gray (calf-NFI), WR Damion Ratley (hamstring), RB Duke Johnson (hamstring), DB Donnie Lewis Jr. (foot), DE Genard Avery (ankle), DE Olivier Vernon (hamstring), CB Tavierre Thomas (hamstring), TE Demetrius Harris (concussion), TE Seth DeValve (concussion), LB Adarius Taylor (concussion), DT Brian Price (concussion), CB Phillip Gaines (neck) and DT Sheldon Richardson (abdomen) did not practice.

Up next – No practice Sunday. Camp resumes Monday with practice from 10:30am-12:30 p.m.

In addition to the much better offensive scheme and play-calling that we had from Freddie and perhaps Zampese over what Haley gave us............I thought another huge improvement was how much more disciplined the team was under Gregg Williams than they were under Hue.

I wonder if we will miss the discipline factor that Williams provided?

In addition to the much better offensive scheme and play-calling that we had from Freddie and perhaps Zampese over what Haley gave us............I thought another huge improvement was how much more disciplined the team was under Gregg Williams than they were under Hue.

I wonder if we will miss the discipline factor that Williams provided?

I wondered about the discipline as well. Something that encouraged me was Freddie talking about "we don't practice penalties" and making the team run sprints.

Its seems to me that the Browns Staff like Seibert and are just waiting for him to turn on the numbers as clearly Joseph has done the better of the two...Just think that these guys are waiting for Sonny Seibert to break out and once he does then they got something to back him up with.

Its not about the draft its about the unreliability of Joseph to make an important kick is this the guy they want for that big kick in the playoffs???

So again nothing to back it with just a "FEELING" I'm getting by the reluctance to name Joseph the kicker the competition will end once Seibert has the edge...

I don’t agree with that bro ...

Why would we announce a winner after the horses have reached the 1/4 pole and still have 3/4’s to go ..

The ST’s coach said they’ve changed the mechanics of both some .. with Joseph i believe he said he was inconsistent with his plant foot placement and his body lean was all over rhe place ... so they have worked on that and a few other things ...

In regards to Siebert i can’t remember what he said other than he was working with a holder that was just learning how to hold and his holder was “inconsistent” but is improving daily .. he did mention somethings they tweeked on his mechanics also i just can’t remember them .. and with Siebert he is learning to kick off the ground as opposed to the flat tee they kick off of in college ... that last one was me not the ST’s coach ..

I think it’s way to early to call the race but it has nuttin to do with the staff waiting for the rook to catch up .. its simply WAY TO EARLY!!!
Posted By: eotab Re: 2019 Browns Training Camp - 08/04/19 02:57 PM
As stated just a FEELING I got not a fact.
I think the Civil Service test is to get him the job once he turns the numbers around that is when we will hear the coaches stating that he has the edge to the starting job.

Thanks for that info on the holder and yes there is a transition for Siebert on the NFL rules compared with college.

Good to hear cause I like this kid a lot and once he "GETS IT" I think he is the long term and reliable kicker we haven't had since Dawson left us.

I don't think so, Vers. Freddie seems to hold everyone accountable, and he gets on them for mistakes and has them work until they get it right. I went to the scrimmage yesterday, the practice periods were crisp and moved at a good clip. I saw very few balls on the ground, other than heavily contested passes, batted balls, or throwaways. And to your point, I saw one false start during 11 on 11's and the offender got his ass reamed. Overall, they looked sharp, and it's still early. (Including yesterday, seven days in a row in pads.)

Side note: Strong, Landry, OBJ, Callaway, Chubb, Mitchell, Njoku, Wilson, Garret, Hilliard, Higgins, Willies, and Pharoah Brown all jumped out at me at different times.

That's a good question. It should make a lot of people wonder. I mean let's face it, nobody actually knows what the dynamics were behind the scenes. We heard Wylie say that Zampese was the one most responsible for Bakers development. A lot of people wish to write that off as sour grapes. But at the same time nobody knows how true that may actually be.

We don't know what the results will be. All we can do is hope they will be positive.

In terms of Freddie’s approach, I like that there isn’t a lot of smoke blown anywhere ... it’s all business and matter of fact. With Gregg, I always got the sense he was talking big without much substance ... Like, we’d have a horrible defensive game, and he’d say “These guys really get after it. They’re hungry and desire it, blah blah. ... they’ll get it done”

In another thread I was asked about Camp....here are my immediate thoughts from what I saw:

Originally Posted By: Rishuz

Our Dline is going to be brutal for opponents. They were penetrating into our backfield A LOT. I suspect that also has to do with our Oline, but I think our Dline is going to be a force to reckon with. I also think the OLine will improve playing against them because there won't be too many teams as menacing on all sides as ours.

OLine def has holes, at least w/our D it does. I saw our D giving Baker, Drew and the other two QBs a hard time. I also saw them stop the RBs on several plays behind the LOS.

Duke didn't dress. Hunt did, but wasn't involved on the field. Dontrell looked good and D'Ernest Johnson got a lot of reps. The new kid from Ohio U was also used a bit at camp and scored a couple times, but he was going against 2s & 3s.

Willies is HUGE as is Pharoah Brown! I was amazed at how small OBJ actually is, but of course he commands a presence and EVERYBODY at camp and First Energy was focused on his every move.

Callaway looks bigger than all of them and Jalen Strong is very skinny, but had some nice grabs.

Takitaki is as advertised....vocal and fast. He was very noticable when on the pitch. And, of cours eMack Wilson had 2 great plays at Camp (diving pick) and a pick 6 at the O&B scrimmage.

Kicking is a problem...no question. How much is due to holding? Not sure. But, Seibert missed several practicing and went 3/5 in the scrimmage. Joseph went 7/7 in scrimmage inc. a 51 yd in a 2 min drill. BUT, my worry is we WILL lose games if we carry both of these guys. Esp when the winter weather and winds kick in. Joseph is the strongest of the two (at the moment), but I wonder if we could dish a trade? I believe Chicago have two decent kickers at camp. What about Duke for a 5th rounder AND one of their kickers? Just a thought I had while flying home.

IF I had to pick 2 players, one on either side of the ball, who impressed me the most:

Offense: Pharoah Brown. The dude is HUGE and will be a massive target in the red zone or for a 1st down (esp when focus is on the two big WRs and Njoku). I would definitely keep him!

Defense: Mack Wilson. He had a great couple days and it seemed every time I looked up I saw him involved.

It was a really cool experience and I am glad to have been there. The Angels were also in town and they got swept, so CLE was rocking this past weekend. Glad to have visited my old home town and witness it.

I would have been ok with either, but I will defer on this one to Dorsey, who had a lot more interaction with both of them.

Thanks PDX ... I heard/read Mack Wilson had a good few days, so it’s good to corroborate. Also, when you say Callaway seems big, do you mean stout/strong? I know he’s on the short side.

Thanks

In comparison to the other Receivers he was thick around the core, waist/butt and thighs. He was with the 2s and never with the 1s. But, I will be shocked if he doesn't make the team. Willies was just tall, muscular and big...kinda like Gordon. Strong was thin...pencil legs, but he made some good catches. I was close to the field and at one point OBJ was 10 feet away from me and he was shorter than I expected (I looked it up, he is 5'11 and I am 5'10), but of course he is solid muscle and has an amazing vertical as well as ability to twist and contort and catch with one hand (he was doing some practices before the team drills and was catching all of them with one hand).

I should have also added...Greedy was with the 1s and the 2s. AND, after the final whistle of TC he stayed on the field while Blough or Gilbert (can't remember...#3, I think?) threw to Montgomery while Greedy was in coverage. That was good to see.

The pecking order has changed in the coaching staff and as such so have the dynamics. A lot of new faces that have never worked together. So I certainly hope the bulk of the posters are right.

But so far the opinions of the board are based on feelings, not results in the W/L column.

I wasn't overwhelmed by Baker at camp or at scrimmage. He made a couple nice passes and good drop back handoffs, BUT, keep in mind, he is also in and out of the line up. He does drills with 1st team and then comes out and the 2nds come out with rotational players working with the other 3 QBs. So, you don't get a true flow. Even at the scrimmage, which I thought would work more like an actual 2 hand touch game it was rotational/stop start. The 2 min drills were prob the most free flowing of them all.

AND, our defense were also giving ALL the QBs a hard time. This is why I was focusing more on our OLine and our Defense. I really think our OLine will benefit practicing and competing against our Defense as not too many other teams will be as nasty as ours, but I would also LOVE to be a fly on the wall w/OLine, Kicker, punter conversations between Kitcho, Asst. coaches and Dorsey.

EDIT: I do have video of a nice, tight window pass to Landry at Camp that Baker threw. But, like I said above...I wasn't in awe of him, but in fairness I was also focusing on other aspects of our team that I know are questionable.

Cleveland Browns training camp offensive report: Freddie Kitchens wants players to start stringing together good days
Today 4:27 PM

https://www.cleveland.com/browns/2019/08...-good-days.html

By Dan Labbe, cleveland.com

BEREA, Ohio -- We’ve reached the point of training camp where things start to get real. There’s a game on Thursday night, a job interview as head coach Freddie Kitchens called it, for the Browns and for other teams.

The biggest battles are on the offensive side of the ball, at right guard and for those last couple spots on the wide receiver depth chart. The nature of covering training camp requires a snap judgment on a near-daily basis, but Kitchens used a phrase that often gets uttered around this time of year, “string together days.”

There was the response to Eric Kush getting the reps at right guard again.

“We’ll see if he can string some days together, Kitchens said.

There was his answer about Jaelen Strong coming on over the last few practices.

“He’s strung together a couple days,” Kitchens said. “We’ll see if it continues.”

You don’t win a job with one good play or one good practice. You win jobs by putting together day after day.

“The point of all this is, we have to string together days, we have to string together games, but right now we’re just interested in tomorrow,” Kitchens said, “and that’s how you do that, you stay in the moment, you go on the practice field, you string together a good day and good days happen by taking good reps and then, before you know it, you’ve strung together three or four good days.”

Stringing together days. That’s what camp’s about.

Here are some more offensive observations from Monday:

* This was one of those days where standing on the sideline watching Baker Mayfield throw was something special. His arm was live and the ball was zipping. There were throws the receiver couldn’t help but catch. It helped liven up an otherwise mundane practice.

* Mayfield’s two negative plays: an interception by cornerback Greedy Williams, but Willies got a talking to after that play. It’s fair to wonder if it was on the receiver.

Cornerback Terrance Mitchell almost pick-sixed him, jumping in front of Jaelen Strong.

* Even with some of the incredible throws, there were plays a few receivers will want back. Willies had the ball ripped out by Williams on a laser from Mayfield. He had a drop in the red zone. Running back Dontrell Hilliard put one on the ground and Nick Chubb, who has been reliable catching the ball out of the backfield so far, had a drop.

* Those bad plays by Willies probably help explain his reaction after he made what might have been the best play of camp on the offensive side of the ball:

* This space serves as your regular reminder that Rashard Higgins just keeps catching the football.

* If there is a leader in the clubhouse for right guard, it appears to be Kush. Kitchens wasn’t willing to say as much, but Kush might be in a position to grab hold of the job.

* An interesting connection seems to have developed on the second team: Drew Stanton looked D.J. Montgomery’s way a bunch. He hit him twice in the back corner of the endzone twice during a red zone period and put another one right on the money to him that Montgomery was unable to hang onto.

The #6 WR has to be a guy they feel can develop long term, because barring injury, he isn't going to be active on game-days.

Freddie Kitchens addresses the media following the 10th day of Brown's training camp on August 5th, 2019. He discusses the comments made by former Brown's offensive line coach Bob Wylie. He also speaks about the important role the run game will have in the offense as well as the benefits and consequences that come with having a more physical training camp than years prior.

I was not saying that it wasn't a tough game to start with or the circumstances were less than ideal, but the record books say we went 5 and 3 after the firing of Hue and Haley.

I noticed hitt said we were 5 and 2 the other day in his reply to me on another thread and I let it go, but a couple of other people have repeated it. They may have saw his post and repeated it? I don't know. I was just trying to be factual.

It's not the accurate record, but I can't get too wound up over not counting the Chiefs game. Facing an unbelievable offense the same week you just fired your 2 top coaches is a tough hand.

I am not "wound up," although you guys are starting to get me wound up. We have posters that spread lies over and over on this board and y'all don't say anything. I state a truth and you guys are trying to shoot that down?

I wasn't saying it as an insult towards Williams. I was simply clarifying what the actual record was.

BUT, the rapid turn around, Baker's numbers from week 8, the Oline changes and how they protected their QB etc. opened my eyes that we were conned. The ONLY good thing I can say about those awful 2.5 years is we got MG, BM and a core nucleus of other significant players in the draft and via trades/FA due to the cap space Dorsey inherited and his ability to evaluate and hire damn good talent scouts.

Forward we march.

While the grass drinks in the much-needed water, we're reflecting on another hot practice in Berea. Here are our observations from Day 11 of #BrownsCamp.

Yes, it was.

He hauled in touchdowns in an efficient red-zone period. He made highlight grabs downfield. And he, predictably, caught everything in between. A day after Odell Beckham Jr. spent the practice completely out of sight due to illness, he showed us many glimpses of how he can be the catalyst to Cleveland's offense.

Beckham's presence makes the unit significantly more dangerous, and coaches spent Tuesday tinkering with how lethal it could be. Beckham lined up all over the field, getting reps outside and in the slot and finding success from all locations.

The headaches for opposing defenses are easy to envision. And the benefits reaped by Jarvis Landry and other targets could seem endless.

“Each and every day it is getting better and better," receivers coach Adam Henry said about Beckham's and Landry's development within Cleveland's offense. "You saw today they strung together a good day. There are going to be ebbs and flows, and you stay with it.”

Staying with this offense will be worth your time.

2. It's Kush, again
Eric Kush got the start at right guard with the first team on Monday, which would mean Tuesday would be Austin Corbett's day if the rotation stayed true to form. But it didn't.

Kush ran with the first team again Tuesday, officially breaking the rotation. There is an important aside, though: Kyle Kalis, also part of the rotation, left practice after suffering what Freddie Kitchens said he thought was a stinger during individual work early in the session. As a result, Corbett played second- and third-team center (Kalis usually mans the latter) and Bryan Witzmann played second-team right guard.

All the while, Kush filled the starting right guard. Unsurprisingly, he did a solid job.

"We like Kush, that's why he's here," Kitchens said afterward. "But again, he needs to string together days, good days, consistent days. I don't mind not being the best at anything. I just want to know what we're getting when we go out there on that field.

"We judge off what we've seen ... and that's a fluid situation."

The team hasn't yet played a preseason game, so it is a little too early to start making declarations. But it's clear from the last few days that Kush has a nose in the race, if he isn't in the lead entirely. His veteran presence pairs well with his stout blocking in the run and pass games, and with what Kitchens wants in his players: toughness.

3. Moments of adversity
Kitchens has said repeatedly that he plans to put his players in moments of adversity to test their resilience. On Tuesday, Kitchens swung the practice completely off script, shifting to the second field and forcing his offense to move the ball from their own 1-yard line. The results were mixed.

David Njoku dropped a pass that would've bought the offense a little breathing room, and two plays later, Jermaine Whitehead read a run fake perfectly, leapt at the line and intercepted a short pass on the goal line, needing just one step to get into the end zone for the shortest pick-six one will ever see.

This didn't produce the best results, but it did test the group, and helped reveal where they need to improve. The period also came after Kitchens stopped practice to bring his team together before an earlier 11-on-11 period, which arrived while players were having a less-than-stellar day on the field.

"We recognized a problem last night," Kitchens explained about the huddle. "I wanted to remind them of the problem that we had in yesterday's practice. And that's part of the learning process: Recognizing when something is starting to slide and putting a stop to it.

"I want to see us come back from the downs, and I think we did that at times today. Again, it's all a learning process."

4. Mack Wilson just won't go away
It was another day and another key defensive play from Mack Wilson.

Tuesday saw Wilson showing more and more comfort with his role within the Browns defense. The rookie has been in the right place at the right time more often than not, which proved to be valuable in a late ball-moving period.

Wilson undercut a throw intended for Landry, who was running a quick out, and the linebacker didn't look back, taking the interception back for a touchdown. Beckham comically chased Wilson all the way to the 5-yard line before slowing up to allow Wilson into the end zone for his latest impact play in a camp that is starting to be full of them.

"I think some of these guys come out of school and there's a couple different phases when they're swimming here," Kitchens said afterward. ... "It's a process for those guys. ... I've been very pleased with Mack, but we need to keep stringing days together."

Friday was an eye-opener, Saturday was a pat on the back and Tuesday was confirmation that Wilson's natural ability might just help him transition to the pro game faster than most. He sure doesn't seem to be slowing down.

5. "Creating depth"
We've spent a good amount of this space talking about the standout play from Derrick Willies and lately, Jaelen Strong. Both are seeing first-team reps, and not just when Beckham and Landry aren't playing. Now they're lining up alongside the stars.

"We are just doing a bunch of combinations right now and trying to create some depth there running with the ones," receivers coach Adam Henry said of Strong's recent play. "That is what we are doing. Day by day, moving guys around.”

Notably absent from these rotations on most days is presumed contender for the Nos. 3 or 4 receiver position Antonio Callaway. He's spent most of his time moving around with the second-team and is getting plenty of targets as a result. Henry explained that's by design, in order to make the overall receiver group stronger from top to bottom.

To Callaway's credit, he's made a good number of plays. He's also expected to contribute alongside Beckham and Landry, meaning ideally, he won't be catching passes from Drew Stanton on Sundays. It would make sense, then, for him to see more reps with Mayfield in order to keep building their rapport.

Henry didn't give this idea much clout, instead elaborating on how total reps is more important at this point.

"That is just creating depth," Henry said of Callaway's usage. "You want to see guys with the depth of the receiver group moving along. There are going to be times where now he is just getting a lot of the two reps, but it is a lot of reps. Just getting the reps and the communication of it. I am not worried about Callaway. He will be fine."

As he heads toward a contributing role alongside a group of scrappy targets in Rashard Higgins, Willies, Strong and Ishmael Hyman, Callaway could have a golden opportunity ahead of him. After all, it isn't every day one gets the chance to play alongside Beckham and Landry on an NFL Sunday.

"That's huge. No. 3, that's his time to go and take advantage of what they give you," Henry said. ... "Those are the things that we're coaching day to day with the details of it so they're on the page with Baker because that's a critical position right there."

Critical, indeed. We'll see who fills the role come September.

Mack Wilson has had a few good days in a row. Seems like he’s very good in space and as a passing down LB. Should be interesting to see him this preseason

Steals of the draft (so far): Greedy & Wilson. I figured they'd go 1st & 3rd round respectively. Dorsey snatched up real talent here at bargain basement pricing, IMO.

Have you seen practices? I’m curious how Greedy has looked .. only read a few random tidbits
Posted By: eotab Re: 2019 Browns Training Camp - 08/07/19 02:13 PM
I find that pretty confusing cause all I read is that the players are IN AND OUT a lot so that makes it hard to string things together for a good days.

That also might be our strategy to remain healthy and only get a few nicks here and thee...especially for that starting Defense.
Cannot wait to see them together.

I've only been to the Orange & Brown scrimmage, but I did see Wilson snatch an interception and run it back. Greedy was active as well, saw him in tight coverage break up a pass. Mostly, I'm probably seeing and reading what you are.

When I was at camp Greedy was in and out with both the 1s and 2s. He was one of the players who had less rest than others. He also stayed back and took some reps w/one of the back-up QBs (#3) and Montgomery.

I think it's safe to say we keep Ward/Greedy/Mitchell/Carrie/Burnett/Randall w/ 5 out at once in some packages. Mitchell/Carrie in nickel?

Edit: spelling on Carrie's name.

This is definitely the case at both TC and the O&B scrimmage. I was excited about the scrimmage as I expected it to flow more like a 2 hand touch game. I was on the 50yd line and sat higher up in that section hoping to watch plays unfold, but it too was stop start w/rotational players coming in and out. Scrimmage was pretty similar to what I saw at TC, just a bigger venue. Baker would lead the 1s in a set of exercises then Stanton and the 2s would come out against 2nd team D and then the other 2 QBs would come in and out w/other rotational players. The only time it actually had some flow was in the 2 min/hurry up drills.

5 things I've learned from Browns camp
By: Jeff Risdon

https://brownswire.usatoday.com/2019/08/07/5-things-ive-learned-from-browns-camp/

Cleveland Browns training camp rolls into day 12, just one more practice session before the preseason opener with the Washington Redskins. I’ve been at four of the practices and talked extensively with other daily observers.

Here are the top five things I’ve learned over the training camp sessions thus far:

Baker Mayfield drives the team hard
It’s obvious to anyone in Berea who watches even one segment of team drills: Baker Mayfield does not let mistakes go uncorrected.

If Odell Beckham Jr. isn’t where and when Mayfield expected him to be on a route, the second-year QB is going to let him know and hash it out. The same is true of a running back missing a pass protection assignment, as Dontrell Hilliard found out Monday. Often loudly and sometimes profanely, Mayfield’s style is to attack the mistakes right away in an effort to fix them.

That includes his own errors, by the way. It’s a regular sight to see Mayfield mentally reliving the last rep when he makes a mistake, such as the pick-6 he threw to Jermaine Whitehead on Tuesday in the shadow of his own goalpost. There is nothing stoic about him. He wants to be great and he expects that of his teammates as well as himself.

This is not a negative. Too many players and coaches in the Browns past have been too complacent, too tolerant of mediocrity (or worse). Mayfield will not let teammates off the hook. Accountability is evident in Berea, and it starts with No. 6.

Kicking remains a big problem
Greg Joseph has outplayed Austin Seibert in the placekicking battle, but it’s an uninspiring win. And for a team that lost two games last year directly because of poor kicking, that’s not good enough.

Seibert has been a huge disappointment. The fifth-round pick missed more FG attempts than he made through the first five days of practice. Joseph continues to bang kicks through, but they seldom are of the no-doubt variety — just like last year’s 17-for-20 showing in his rookie season.

Tuesday saw Seibert catch up a little as Joseph struggled in the mid-practice competition. It’s worth noting that Seibert’s miss was wildly wide left, while Joseph’s misses were both close shaves.

Scott Petrak ct
@ScottPetrak
#Browns kicking competition: Austin Seibert 4-for-5, WL from 45. Greg Joseph 3-for-5, WL from 33 and 50

Seibert is demonstrably better in kickoff drills, both on distance and directional “splash” kicks. That should be a tie-breaker and not a deal-maker. It’s hard to feel confident in either option right now.

The depth at wide receiver is truly impressive
Adding Odell Beckham Jr. to a lineup that already featured Pro Bowler Jarvis Landry figured to raise the level of talent and depth in the Browns’ WR room.

What has been unexpected is the emergence of guys like Derrick Willies and Jaelen Strong. Both have taken first-team reps at times and not looked out of place. They’re obviously not Beckham or Landry, but bring their own qualities which work for them.

The battle for the final one or two roster spots at WR is intense. With Beckham, Landry and Rashard Higgins set as the top threesome, it leaves Strong, Willies, Antonio Callaway and perhaps Damion Ratley (currently sidelined with injury) jockeying for position and status.

Here’s the good part: Strong and Willies as a combination has been better in camp than the top twosome of two years ago, Corey Coleman and Kenny Britt. And they’re likely No. 5 and 6 on this year’s Browns, not starters. Having good QB play certainly helps, but there is legit depth of talent in Cleveland at WR.

Less worry about offensive tackle
Heading into training camp, my biggest worry on the entire team was offensive tackle. After watching starters Greg Robinson and Chris Hubbard, I feel a lot better about the starting group.

Hubbard looks much more comfortable and capable in his second season as the team’s right tackle. When he’s faced off against Myles Garrett and newcomer Olivier Vernon, he’s held his own and shown the ability to recover from an initial defeat. He’s shown more power and grit in run blocking, too.

Robinson continues to amaze with his technical progress on the left side. The guy who stepped up late last season with his career on the line has not rested on his laurels, thankfully. Robinson’s footwork and balance have improved. He’s still just an average run blocker on his best day, but the Browns are paying him to keep Mayfield comfortable.

The depth behind them looks abysmal, so it’s imperative Hubbard and Robinson stay healthy and on top of their games.

Steve Wilks was a great choice as the defensive coordinator
Freddie Kitchens as a rookie coach appears to be swimming through the rough currents of high expectations, loud external noise and the rigamarole of the daily tasks of his new gig. It sure feels like Steve Wilks is helping him.

Wilks went through being a head coach for the first time a year ago. It did not go well for him in Arizona, for reasons both in and (mostly) out of his control. That experience serves him well as a consigliere to Kitchens.

As far as his defense goes, Wilks has shown creativity and adaptability. The new scheme will look foreign to anyone expecting Gregg Williams redux. There are going to be a lot of wrinkles and formations that will keep the offenses guessing and off-balance. It’s too early to know if it will work, of course, but I’ve been impressed with how Wilks has handled the defense thus far.

One thing I heard on the radio was from Joe Thomas. He felt Kush has outplayed Corbett.

That is not what I wanted to hear. Kush has been a survivor in this league. Far from a real talent. He played an increased role last year but he has never been a real starter.

It was made clear to Corbett this is yours to lose.

So not a real good development. Kush may work out fine. But this is a position that there maybe players picked up come cuts around the league. Or, a possible trade.

Freddie is looking for someone to take control. He wants a solution.

Corbett knows this the real deal right now and he better show something.

I wouldn't say shambles. But I would agree that it has been become one of our bigger question marks. I think our biggest question mark is K. I may get some disagreement on this next one but I think Lb is second and oline 3rd.

I don't include depth as a question mark because every team has depth issues and the untimely injury to the wrong player could be disaster - for any team.

Keep in mind we still are in the shorts in regards to OL. Kush's technique is much better than the other candidates.

It is what will happen when the real football is being played. can't wait for the 3rd preseason game where these OL will finally get a goood work out. Where Technique without power will get overwhelmed. I want Nasty and strong Technique can be learned. Is Corbett that Nasty strong kid??? or is he memorex. I was not onboard with the pick from day one...Oh well hope I'm wrong but so far doesn't look like it. Ok one bad pick in two years...smh but at #33 overall for OG the kid should have been a BEAST.

Good News - RG is probably on of the most available positions out there. We can solve it from FA but hopefully a stud will land in our pockets. we will see who we steal and put on our Practice squad after the cuts!

Hey maybe we can work out a deal for LAVA man unless he is hurt again. jmho

Related to my above post is this from SF HC Kyle Shanahan:

Quote:
49ers coach Kyle Shanahan wants to reduce or eliminate preseason games

By Matt Maiocco August 09, 2019 10:20 AM

Very few men who will be members of the San Francisco 49ers will take the field for the team on Saturday night in the exhibition opener at Levi’s Stadium.

It’s preseason game No. 1, and the only significant things that could occur are negative in nature. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who has not missed a practice this summer after returning from ACL surgery that cut short his 2018 season, will be among a large group of 49ers players who will not see any game action. Some will get the night off as a precaution. Others will sit out due to injuries.

Coach Kyle Shanahan said his preference is to see the NFL’s exhibition season get reduced -- or eliminated altogether.

“You absolutely don’t need four preseason games,” Shanahan said. “I’d rather have zero than four.
Preferably, I’d like two. One to evaluate the people trying to make the team and then just one to knock a little rust off.”

The 49ers have gone through 11 training camp practices, during which time the coaching staff and personnel department had ample opportunity to size up the team’s 90-man roster. Next week, the 49ers will have their biggest two days of camp when they have a practice against the Denver Broncos in Englewood, Colo.

In comparing the importance of those two joint practices against the exhibition games, Shanahan said he places a lot more value in the practices.

“A ton more value,” he said after concluding a two-hour practice in Santa Clara on Thursday. “I put more value into what we did today.”

Shanahan experienced a rough week at practice with rookie defensive end Nick Bosa and cornerback Jason Verrett narrowly avoiding disastrous ankle injuries. Both players are out for the remainder of the exhibition season. The club hopes both will be available for the Sept. 8 regular-season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Shanahan was not happy with Wednesday’s practice, which he considered sloppy because too many players were knocked to the ground, leading to injuries. But he also realizes there is a greater risk of injury in such a highly competitive environment with jobs on the line.

“You keep showing guys you want guys to compete, you want guys to do things, but you’ve got to really not let it get carried away, because when guys are trying to make the team, they’re trying to compete,” Shanahan said.
“If they’re not in a position to thud someone up and be square on someone or not bring their legs with them, it’s not worth it. You can prove that some other time, but it’s not worth proving it in practice.”

I think doing away with some or all preseason games would significantly hurt the roster bubble guys and the teams that are trying to turn over or develop their rosters.

Those bubble guys are looking for any opportunity to show what they've got... and not only to their teams but other teams as well. Remember Crowell's first TC. We basically didn't see him at all until that 4th game, where he went off. What would've happened with him if not for that game?

Posted By: eotab Re: 2019 Browns Training Camp - 08/12/19 05:01 PM
I'm confused...did this happen in the preseason game or practice???

Also any news on exactly how this happened was it a drill? That possibly could be eliminated in the future or just one of those things.

Injuries are going to happen in football - you just hope its not of the - HE IS DONE Variety.

I was amazed at the lack of injuries in Semi Pro...I know the speed is not the same but Ankles and some knees were the biggest issues. Concussion protocols were none existent and were relied heavily on the players.

But I think the preseason games are essential for the bottom of the roster. Coaches have to deal with it properly. I loved how Kitchens adjusted with the one going in a 2 minute drill. That actually eliminated a lot of injury opportunities if you ask me.

But these guys at the bottom of the depth charts its there one way to get opportunities and hook up with the team or get looked at by another. It would be a shame to eliminate those opportunities.

Did you read the Shanahan article that I posted?

Also, colleges and high schools don't have preseason games. You can get a lot more out of those combined practices than you can w/a preseason game.

I think shortening the length of TC would go a long way in decreasing injuries in the NFL. Bodies wear down and that increases the risk for injury.

I did. My intention wasn't to argue the article (well, maybe one part of it). It was merely to state that I bet all those roster bubble guys would be bummed to lose out on opportunities to show what they've got. Game's show not only their team, but others as well. If they get cut, other teams can use preseason game tape as reason to sign them during cut downs. That's why I brought up Crowell. Dude probably would've been cut and signed to the practice squad. Instead, he put up a monster game in that last preseason game and we had to hang onto him. I'd be willing to bet those guys on the edge of being cut would prefer any additional chances to show their stuff.

I get that guys who are locked into the 53 shouldn't play much. They're signed up for more than enough wear and year over the regular season.

Browns notebook: Chad Thomas day to day with neck sprain after being carted off

https://www.ohio.com/sports/20190812/bro...eing-carted-off

BEREA — An eerie silence fell over Browns practice Monday while defensive end Chad Thomas lay in the end zone.

All of the action in the 14th session of training camp came to a screeching halt at about 11:45 a.m.

His teammates stood nearby as medical personnel examined him, immobilized him on a backboard stretcher and carted him off the field.

Shortly after practice, a Browns spokesman shared a fortunate update with media, saying Thomas had feeling and movement in all of his extremities and had been taken to University Hospitals to be further evaluated.

By 5 p.m., the spokesman said Thomas had returned to team headquarters after being diagnosed with a neck sprain. His return to practice status will be evaluated on a day-to-day basis, and he’ll likely travel with the Browns when they leave town Tuesday for joint practices with the Indianapolis Colts in Westfield, Indiana, the spokesman said.

Weighing in on Twitter, Thomas wrote at 5:19 p.m., “Can’t text or call errbody but I’m good. Put some dirt on that s***.”

After briefly reviewing practice film, coach Freddie Kitchens said Thomas, a third-round pick in last year’s draft, absorbed a hit on the side of his shoulder.

“Anytime something happens like a stinger or any issues like that, you want to be more cautious than anything, and that’s what we’re doing,” Kitchens said after practice when Thomas was still at the hospital.

Thomas walked around after the play before resting on a knee and then winding up on the ground.

“We kind of saw him moving around out there, so we were hoping it wasn’t too serious,” left guard Joel Bitonio said. “But anytime they bring the stretcher out and put someone down, it’s great to hear that he’s moving and they’re just doing extra steps now to make sure he is OK.”

Kitchens acknowledged a serious, frightening scene like the one involving Thomas, 23, tends to drain the energy from practice.

“It does, but in our game, that’s reality,” he said. “Sometimes that happens during the course of a game and mentally we’ve got to keep moving forward. At the end of the day, this is still practice, so you don’t want to see your teammate laying there.”

Later in practice, Kitchens brought the players together to discuss what happened to Thomas.

“We talked about how obviously it’s unfortunate and it’s hard to witness, but we’ve got to keep the energy at practice the same, we’ve got to pick it up,” wide receiver Jarvis Landry said. “And I think we finished practice pretty well despite that.

“It’s never a moment at any point in time in any sport — or in anything — that’s a sight that anybody wants to see. Chad’s in our prayers.”

Support system

Landry made it clear he has the back of Antonio Callaway in the aftermath of the NFL suspending the second-year Browns receiver last week for four regular-season games because he violated the league’s substance-abuse policy.

“He already has his support system. He continues to grow with that,” Landry said. “As players, we stand behind Antonio. We’re here for him. Whenever he wants to talk, we talk to him. It’s just the relationship that we have, and everybody goes through things. We need people to be there for him, and we’re there for him.”

Landry said he’s “absolutely” hopeful Callaway can turn everything around.

“The kid has all the abilities,” Landry said. “He has all of the tools to be a guy that can make plays at a high level. He has the speed, the catching ability, the route-running, all of those things. If we can get that all together, he’s going to be a hell of a player.”

Right guard update

Eric Kush served as the first-team right guard for the sixth consecutive practice and also filled the role in Thursday’s preseason opener, a 30-10 win over Washington at FirstEnergy Stadium. He’s the clear leader in a competition against 2018 second-round selection Austin Corbett and Kyle Kalis, who’s in concussion protocol.

“He has some game experience,” Bitonio said. “He played a little bit more in the game [against Washington], and he showed some good stuff. He’s a good pass protector, he works hard and he has a great attitude every day. He comes and he has fun with it and he loves playing the game of football. But he’s done well so far.”

Extra points

• Kendall Lamm replaced left tackle Greg Robinson with the first-team offense late in practice, but Kitchens said Robinson was not injured. “It was just Greg had to redo something with his tape or something on the thumb,” Kitchens said. ”... Everything is fine. It was just the tape job. It was nothing.”

• Tight end David Njoku (knee) joined the list of injured players who worked out beside the field during practice.

• Those who remained idle were receivers Callaway (high-ankle sprain) and Damion Ratley (hamstring), Kalis (concussion), cornerbacks TJ Carrie (hamstring) and Tavierre Thomas (hamstring), tight end Seth DeValve (concussion), defensive end Jarrell Owens (groin) and defensive tackle Brian Price (concussion).

• Defensive end Anthony Zettel (ankle) returned to practice.

• Rookie safety Sheldrick Redwine returned to practice after missing Saturday’s session for a personal reason. He made an appearance with the first-team defense.

• Greg Joseph made all six of his attempts in a field-goal drill (33, 37, 40, 28, 43 and 46 yards). Rookie fifth-round pick Austin Seibert went 5-of-6, missing wide right from 43 yards.

• The entire starting defensive line participated in team drills for the first time in a while, with tackle Sheldon Richardson rejoining the group.

• A play after right tackle Chris Hubbard nearly fell into quarterback Baker Mayfield’s legs, Mayfield connected with receiver Rashard Higgins for a touchdown of about 50 yards. Cornerback Denzel Ward fell as he covered Higgins.

• With the offense backed up against the goal line, defensive end Myles Garrett got past Kush and rushed Mayfield, who responded to the pressure by fumbling out of the back of the end zone for a safety.

• Free safety Damarious Randall had an interception in a seven-on-seven drill. Rookie cornerback Donnie Lewis Jr. had an interception in a team drill.

• Kitchens said he could “definitely” envision the Browns going without a fullback on the 53-man roster.

• Three life-size cardboard cutouts of linebacker Christian Kirksey were placed atop a second row of bleachers, where 18 youth football players from the East Cleveland Chiefs sat.

• The Browns drafted Mack Wilson two rounds later than fellow rookie linebacker Sione Takitaki, but Wilson still jokes with Takitaki about being the better player because Wilson attended a football powerhouse at the University of Alabama and Takitaki went to Brigham Young University. “I was like, ‘Taki, if you would’ve come to ‘Bama, you probably would’ve never played,’ ” Wilson quipped.

Was thinking something like this might be going on after recent developments.

(Though I know Chubb's productivity dropped off a bit after Charles' late season injury last year. I know...we were passing more in the second half of games.)

That's just silly -- but please don't try it in a game (unless we have a 30pt lead).

We (myself, my wife and kids) were up at camp today and that happened right in front of us where the WRs were working out. Here’s the pic we took as OBJ was making the between the legs catch. Landry actually attempted it right before OBJ, but bounced out of his hands...

Browns notebook: Back from leg injury, Denzel Ward expects to play in Friday’s preseason game

https://www.ohio.com/sports/20190820/bro...-preseason-game

BEREA — Denzel Ward’s return to team drills is one of the most important developments this week at Browns training camp.

The cornerback who hails from Nordonia High School and Ohio State suffered a minor injury Aug. 6 and sat out 11-on-11 periods for nearly the next two weeks. He came back to team drills Monday and practiced opposite Terrance Mitchell with the first-team defense Monday and Tuesday.

“Just my leg,” Ward said Tuesday after the 18th practice of camp when asked what had been hindering him. “It was nothing serious. It was just getting ready for the regular season.”

Speaking of tuning up for the Sept. 8 opener, Ward expects to play in Friday’s preseason game No. 3 on the road against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“I definitely want to play, and I plan on playing this week,” Ward said. “And so that’s how it’s going to go this week.”

Some NFL players want nothing to do with exhibition games, so why does Ward want to play Friday after sitting out the first two preseason games?

“I just love playing the game and being out there with the guys and just seeing how the coaches are going to call the play call and just getting my footwork back and getting comfortable playing,” Ward said.

Asked about Ward expecting to face the Bucs, coach Freddie Kitchens said he would not reveal his playing-time plan for Browns starters in Tampa ahead of time.

“We’ll let you know on Friday who’s playing,” Kitchens said, “but I fully expect Denzel to be ready to play.

“I’m glad he’s in that frame of mind. It’s going to benefit him.”

Even if Ward doesn’t make a preseason appearance, he’s confident he’ll be able to perform well in Week 1 against the Tennessee Titans.

“I feel I’ll still play good,” he said. “I just want to get out there [in Tampa].”

Ward would understand, though, if another player didn’t possess a similar desire to play in the preseason.

Wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. hasn’t appeared in team drills during a padded practice since Aug. 6. But Ward said he’s not disappointed that he hasn’t been able to match up much with Beckham in practice.

“Not at all,” Ward said. “I want everybody to be healthy, and it’s just about the big picture and being ready for the regular season and everything. He’s played in a lot of games. He doesn’t really need to be in the preseason, I feel. But, I mean, it’s just about all our guys being healthy Week 1 and coming to play.”

You’re forgiven

A former Buckeyes standout, Ward isn’t holding a grudge against Baker Mayfield, even though the Browns quarterback basically took back his apology for attempting to plant a University of Oklahoma flag on the field at Ohio State after Mayfield led the Sooners to a win over the Buckeyes in 2017.

“No, I forgive him,” Ward said. “We’re on the same team. I know there’s a lot of Ohio State fans that are not happy about that still, though.”

In a story GQ published online Tuesday, Mayfield said the “higher-ups” at Oklahoma told him he needed to apologize, and Mayfield explained his reaction was “jaw-dropping.”

Told by university officials that his display was not what the program was about, Mayfield got worked up when he discussed it with GQ during a May interview.

“Actually we won. That’s what we’re about,” Mayfield told GQ. “I had done so much and worked so hard to play for that school, I was just kinda ... almost embarrassed for them to tell me to apologize.”

Asked how heartfelt his apology was on a scale of one to 10, Mayfield responded, “Zero. Zero. Absolutely not. ... Which might hurt some Ohio fans’ feelings. But I think we’re all good now.”

Bond between defenders

Ward is one of two Browns players who were voted to the Pro Bowl last season. The other is defensive end Myles Garrett, who sat out Tuesday’s practice with an illness.

“No, it’s not [cause for concern],” Kitchens said. “It may be the flu or something. I’m not sure. He was not feeling really well. It started last night and carried over to today.”

Since the Browns drafted Ward fourth overall last year, he has been mesmerized by Garrett, who ranked seventh in the NFL this past season with 13.5 sacks. Garrett lost 10 pounds this summer and considers himself an even faster pass rusher than he had been.

“Myles is already a freak. He’s a beast,” Ward said. “I saw him like that last year. I thought he was the biggest and fastest guy, and for him to say he’s the biggest and fastest this year is even crazier. That’s who he is — he’s a beast.”

Ward and Garrett bonded during their January trip to the Pro Bowl in Orlando.

“It brought us closer,” Ward said. “We spent a lot of time out there at the Pro Bowl together, and we just have talks like, ‘Let’s get there again. Let’s have this be an ongoing thing every year.’”

Ward declined to divulge his individual goals Tuesday, even though he explained he regularly outlines them for Garrett.

Versatility matters

Genard Avery is listed on the roster as a linebacker, but he has spent all of his time in training camp as a defensive lineman.

He fancies himself “a hybrid” player.

“During the season, in season, it will be like a game-type deal,” Avery said, “and wherever they want me within that week, I’ll be practicing.

“They can put me anywhere. Outside linebacker, middle linebacker, defensive end — just using me in many ways to help the defense.

“I like it. I’m very versatile, so wherever I can make plays at, they want to put me at each week, there I go.”

As a rookie fifth-round draft pick last season, Avery made a name for himself by compiling 4.5 sacks and a forced fumble in a part-time role.

In the offseason, Denver Broncos star Von Miller contacted Avery on Instagram with an invitation to Miller’s annual pass-rush summit. Avery attended the Las Vegas gathering in the spring.

“It’s an honor,” Avery said of Miller including him. ”[For] somebody that you’ve been watching your whole life give you a shout-out ... obviously I’m doing something right.”

Extra points

• Running back Dontrell Hilliard (hamstring) returned to practice and participated in team drills.

• The following players did not practice due to injury: receivers D.J. Montgomery (hamstring, personal reason), Ishmael Hyman (concussion) and Antonio Callaway (ankle), safeties Jermaine Whitehead (groin) and Juston Burris (hamstring), cornerback TJ Carrie (hamstring), offensive lineman Kyle Kalis (concussion), defensive tackle Brian Price (concussion) and linebacker Sione Takitaki (hamstring).

• Defensive end Chris Smith missed practice because of a personal reason. Tight end Mik’Quan Deane sat out with an illness.

• Eric Kush continued to open team drills as the first-team right guard.

• Safety Morgan Burnett tipped a David Blough pass and intercepted it while covering tight end Rico Gathers. Later, in a red-zone period, safeties Damarious Randall and Tigie Sanko each also intercepted a pass from Blough.

• Receiver Jaelen Strong was shaken up after he caught a touchdown pass of about 20 yards from Mayfield, but Strong continued to practice.

• Safety J.T. Hassell made a diving interception against quarterback Drew Stanton.

• With pushups at stake, the Browns ended practice with a situational drill in which the offense tried to gain a first down on third-and-6 from the 40. Mayfield connected with receiver Derrick Willies over the middle to move the chains. Then, with the second units pitted against each other, defensive tackle Carl Davis jumped offside. However, Kitchens forced the offense to do pushups, too, because “our center flexed the ball a little bit.”

• Undrafted rookie punter Jamie Gillan was spotted making a 60-yard field goal off the kicking stand. Considering the Browns’ kicking woes and Gillan’s experience as a kicker and punter at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, Kitchens was asked if “The Scottish Hammer” would get a look as a kicker. “I didn’t even know he can kick field goals,” Kitchens said. “If he’s out there kicking 60-yarders, hell, he may get a chance. If you can kick a 60-yarder, your ass is going to get a chance.”

Interesting on a few different fronts.

(1) FO might not be all that enamored with bottom of the WR group as some thought?
(2) Maybe the FO considering going with two QBs on the roster with Miller as the emergency #3 while taking up a spot with the WR roster corps?

Granted he could be cut after Friday's game but it is curious and my initial reaction.

My initial thought would be that they were not happy with the 3rd down back situation. I see Braxton in the duke role

Maybe they see him as RB depth until Hunt is available. It is interesting.

Pass catching in the backfield could also be an option but I'm not sure how many snaps he took out of the backfield.

I also remember seeing that Miller was a good blocking WR ... so maybe a hybrid type RB/TE/WR ... it might be more of an indictment on our RB and TE depth than anything

Head coach Freddie Kitchens addressed the media immediately following the final training camp practice on August 21, 2019. Freddie discusses how the team handled his training camp, the third preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the competition for the final rosters spots through the rest of the preseason.

Imagine if the Hammer and Miller were good enough that we didn't need a kicker and 3rd QB. we could keep 2 extra players.

Browns notebook: Starters to play Friday at Tampa Bay, but will sit in preseason finale

https://www.ohio.com/sports/20190821/bro...reseason-finale

BEREA — Coach Freddie Kitchens said Browns starters will play Friday night in preseason game No. 3 on the road against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“We’re going to play our guys some,” Kitchens said Wednesday after the 19th and final practice of training camp, “and I don’t know how long yet.”

Kitchens also revealed he won’t play his starters Aug. 29 in the preseason finale against the Detroit Lions at FirstEnergy Stadium.

“This week’s a little different because you’re definitely not going to do it next week,” he said.

There will be some starters who sit out against the Bucs because of injuries, Kitchens said.

“Some of it factors in on how guys are feeling, little nicks and bumps that they may have because they’ve got nicks and bumps,” Kitchens said. “We’ve had a physical camp. So you’ve just got to factor all those things in and make a determination.”

Wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. (hip) didn’t participate in half-speed team drills Wednesday, so he’s expected to remain idle in Tampa.

Quarterback Baker Mayfield said he’s “looking forward to playing” in the third preseason game, which is often referred to as “the dress rehearsal” because starters typically play longer than the other three exhibition games. Mayfield added he would like to play “at least a half, but that’s not my call.”

Wilson honored

Linebacker Mack Wilson, a fifth-round pick out of Alabama, received the 2019 Maurice Bassett Award given to the most outstanding rookie in training camp in a vote by the media.

Inaugurated in 1985, it is named in honor running back Maurice Bassett, who played for the Browns from 1954-56. The most recent winners were Mayfield and defensive end Myles Garrett.

Baker bulks up

Mayfield is listed at 6-1 and 215 pounds, same as his rookie season, but admitted he is “a little bit heavier” than he was last year. He declined to give his new weight.

“It’s a better weight,” he said. “I feel like I cleaned my diet up. Just being able to treat this offseason and coming into this year not having to do combine training and being able to focus on football-related things, I feel good. And as long as I’m still able to move around, if I can add a little muscle mass to protect myself, that’s good.”

Talking trash

Kickers Greg Joseph and rookie Austin Seibert have continued to perform as if they are nervous about their training camp competition and Mayfield provided a little extra pressure.

Mayfield found himself in the midst of a situational drill that culminated with a field goal by each, so he stuck around to harangue them. Seibert, a former Oklahoma teammate drafted in the fifth round, connected from 49 yards, while Joseph was wide right from the same distance.

“I was talking to somebody, then I turned around and then all of a sudden I’m right in the middle of the drill, so might as well,” Mayfield said.

Asked if he was trying to pick Seibert up, Mayfield said, “Most of our history is me talking trash to him in college, so that’s what I did today.”

Both kickers went 6-of-7 in the field goal period.

Roster move

Safety Montrel Meander was claimed off waivers from the Jets and receiver D.J. Montgomery (hamstring) was placed on injured reserve.

A Grambling State product, Meander spent the first 12 weeks of the 2018 season on the Browns practice squad before the Raiders signed him to their active roster.

Montgomery caught five passes for 124 yards and a touchdown in two preseason games.

Croom visits

Watching practice was one of Kitchens’ mentors, former Alabama linebacker/tight end, Crimson Tide assistant and longtime NFL assistant Sylvester Croom. Kitchens worked for Croom in 2004-05 at Mississippi State, where Croom was hired in 2004 as the first African-American coach in the Southeastern Conference and spent five seasons.

“For him to carry that on his shoulders, I was very blessed to be a part of that and to see how he came through the fire per se and still be the man that he is,” Kitchens said. “It is one of the most impressive things I have ever seen.”

Extra points

• Garrett returned to practice and participated in team drills, albeit in a session featuring a jog-through pace. Garrett sat out Tuesday with an illness.

• Cornerback TJ Carrie (hamstring) returned to practice. He hadn’t participated since Aug. 6.

• Defensive end Chris Smith also came back after missing two practices for a personal reason.

• The following players did not practice because of injury: fullback Joe Kerrigan (concussion), receivers Antonio Callaway (high-ankle sprain) and Ishmael Hyman (concussion), offensive lineman Kyle Kalis (concussion), defensive tackle Brian Price (concussion), linebacker Sione Takitaki (hamstring) and safeties Jermaine Whitehead (groin) and Juston Burris (hamstring).

• Mystic Tan, Norvell, and VersaSpa will offer complimentary spray tans after the Browns’ first victory of the season. Go to SprayTanTheLand.com for participating salons.

I personally think playing the starters for a quarter or so is a good thing for the 3rd game ... have them get multiple possessions so they can work on adjustments and communication

Hope they score a time or two then yank them

Lawrence lacks consistency from what I have seen, but this guy makes big plays. He has really caught my eye this preseason.

I think he is a perfect interior lineman in our rotation. I hope he sticks.

Let me explain. I don't think he should get starter reps because he is inconsistent, but as a rotational guy, he can go full-out when he is in there. He is very quick off the ball. Sheds blockers nicely w/a some nice fluid hips and explosion off the ball.

I like what I have seen from this dude.
